W

arren Harold Funk, Jr., age 70, a thirty-three year resident of Crofton, MD and formerly of Lanham, MD died unexpectedly on December 4, 2014 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Born on October 31, 1944 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. to the late Naomi and Warren Funk, Sr., Warren graduated in 1966 from Frostburg State College with a degree in education. He began his teaching career with the Prince George’s County Public School System in 1966 at Parklawn Elementary School. He next taught Environmental Education until 1974, returning to the classroom at Gaywood Elementary School, Thomas Johnson Middle School and Tall Oaks Vocational School until he retired in 2000. It was while he was teaching at Gaywood that Warren was named the Prince George’s County Public Schools’ Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 1975. Warren came out of retirement from 2006 – 2011 and mentored student-teacher interns in the classroom. He was known and respected for his positive and supportive comments. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Crofton. He enjoyed carving, drawing, his little dog, Riley, and spending time with his family, especially his three grandchildren. Warren is survived by his loving wife, Mary D. Funk, whom he married in 1979; his daughter, Carrie Lhotsky and her husband, Tony of Cordova, MD; his son, Christopher Green and his wife Angie of Wye Mills, MD; his sister, Cheryl Bloch and her husband, Ted of Philadelphia, PA and his three grandchildren, Dakota Lhotsky, Anna Marie and Peter Green. Friends are invited to Warren’s Life Celebration on Monday, December 8 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, December 9 at 10am at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Crofton. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, MD. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Anne Arundel Medical Center Foundation, 2001 Medical Pkwy., Sajak #550, Annapolis, MD 21401 or the Guatemala Mission at CUMC, 1690 Riedel Rd., Crofton, MD 21114.
