ayne Edward Flanagan, 71, died Monday, Oct. 26, 2009 from an apparent heart attack. Born Gerald Richard Coy on April 14, 1938 in Albany, N.Y., he was adopted by Roland and Julia Flanagan, now deceased. He attended St. Paul School in Lutherville, Md., and Washington and Jefferson College, Washington, Pa. Mr. Flanagan grew up in the Baltimore area and won many sailing trophies in the 1950s on the Chesapeake Bay, sailing the National One Design, among other boats. His love for sailing and boating followed him throughout his life, and he refurbished a Herreshoff racing sailboat in the 1960s. In later years he lived aboard the ‘Not A Shot', a Trawler based in Chester, Md. Later he moved ashore to Denton, Md. He was employed by GMAC, John Deere, Stanford Paper Co. and his own National Personnel Service in Silver Spring, Md., before joining several automobile dealerships in Maryland. An avid auctioneer in his later years, Wayne was a well-known award-winning auctioneer of items ranging from antique hand tools to automobiles, all across the East Coast. He also continued working part-time as a parts driver after his retirement from the automotive industry. Wayne is survived by three sons, Wayne Eric Flanagan of Lenoir,N.C., Paul Roland Flanagan and wife Audrey of Shady Side, Md., and Douglas Andrew Flanagan of Edgewater, Md.; one daughter, Kelly Moreno and husband Pete, of Hagerstown, Md.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Friends and family will gather at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009 at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD celebrate Wayne's life. Interment private.
