ayne D. Riordan, 89, a 37-year resident of Annapolis, died at his home on June 16, 2012. Born March 16, 1923 in Fargo, ND, Wayne served in the U. S. Army during World War II. He used his GI Bill benefits to obtain a law degree from the University of Maryland.
Wayne went to work for the Department of Veterans Affairs where he helped to create a resource sharing program between VA and university hospitals. He retired from the VA as an auditor. Wayne also worked with President Carter’s administration on an amnesty program for Vietnam-era draft dodgers.
He was an avid reader and enjoyed playing poker, golf and volunteering at S.O.M.E. (So Others May Eat) in Washington, DC. He was also a member of the Maryland Bar Association.
He was preceded in death by one brother, John Riordan. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Eleanor Riordan; three sons, Mark (Julie) Riordan of Napa, CA, Donald (Kathy) Riordan of Baltimore and Kevin (Karen) Riordan of Austin, TX; five daughters, Marjorie (Bob) Vogel of Santan, AZ, Nancy Kessinger of Silver Spring, Mary (Rod) Sparr of Ellicott City, Ann (Jeff) Taliaferro of Annapolis and Barbara (Jay) Morgan of Cape St. Claire; one sister, JoEllen (John) Ryan of California, 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was also a “father” and mentor to many others.
Friends are invited to Wayne’s Life Celebration from 11:30 a.m. until his memorial service begins at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19 at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. Inurnment private.
