r. Werner A. Janssen, MD, PhD, Microbiologist
Dr. Werner A. Janssen, MD, 85, a 20- year resident of Edgewater and previously of Great falls, VA, died on April 19, 2011 at his home after a brief illness.
Born August 8, 1925 in Englewood, NJ to the late Rev. Bernard W. and Elsie Anne Janssen. Dr. Janssen enlisted in the US Navy during WWII at age 17 and trained to be an x-ray technician. Upon leaving the service, he earned his BS degree at the University of Connecticut and his MD and PhD degrees at McGill University in Canada.
Dr. Janssen worked as a microbiologist at Fort Dettrick and also worked for the Sterling Research Institute. He has papers published in the Library of Congress and received numerous awards including the J. Howard Brown Award from the Society of American Bacteriologists. He was also listed in the American Men of Science and the Who’s Who of Yachting.
Dr. Janssen enjoyed sailing, living for a year on a yacht, modeling of sail boats. He was fascinated by the Chesapeake Bay and its wildlife, studying the causes of disease in fish and sharks and how it related to humans.
Dr. Janssen was predeceased by his wife Constance Turner and his daughter Christine List.
He is survived by his companion of 16 years, Doris Leizear of Linthicum, MD her children and grandchildren, his sister Eileen Bailey of Danbury, CT and her children; son in law James List and his stepchildren and grandchildren.
Friends are invited to a memorial service and reception on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 6:00pm at the Annapolis Elks Lodge #622, 2517 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD.
