Willard Dallas Dahl - Obituary

W

illard Dallas Dahl, age 97, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2026, with his family by his side. Born on February 10, 1929, in Washington, D.C., Willard lived a life defined by intellectual curiosity, quiet generosity, boundless energy, love of family, and deep devotion to family, friends and passions he held dear. A proud alumnus of the University of Kentucky, class of 1953, Willard distinguished himself as a scholar and was inducted into both Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu, two of the most prestigious honorary fraternities in engineering — honors that reflected the exceptional talent he carried throughout his career. Before embarking on his civilian career, Willard served his country in the US Navy from August 30, 1946, to January 11, 1950. He then dedicated 42 years of distinguished service to the Naval Research Laboratory as an electronics engineer, retiring on April 3, 1992. His work helped advance the frontiers of American science and technology, and he carried the pride of that service with him always. A man of extraordinary vitality, Willard remained vigorously active well into his later years. He was a devoted Volksmarcher, regularly completing 10-kilometer walks — often one or two each weekend. The sport suited him perfectly: disciplined, purposeful, and always moving forward. A devoted admirer of artistic gymnastics, Willard spent decades supporting the sport he loved so dearly. He attended countless championship events around the world and treasured the friendships and memories made along the way. Whether cheering from the stands at an international competition or quietly supporting local gymnasts closer to home, Willard’s generosity and enthusiasm never wavered. There was no fan more loyal, compassionate, or dedicated than Willard. Willard was born to Wertley and Doris Purcell Dahl. He is survived by his 2nd cousin, Kerry Childers, and her husband Donald; his nephews Raymond Jr., Kenneth, David, Douglas, and Gary; and his niece Cindy. He was especially close to his cherished friends Stephanie Willim-Ostmann, Eileen Bowe, and Lisa James, whose companionship brought him great joy. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Raymond and Donald, and his dear friend Lee Bramlett. The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m., at Kalas Funeral Home, 6160 Oxon Hill Road, Oxon Hill, MD 20745. Interment will follow at Washington National Cemetery in Suitland, Maryland. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Salvation Army, 31 Light Street, 2nd Floor, Baltimore, MD 21202.
