illiam “Bill” Pollison Conrad
Born in Limona, Florida on September 3, 1924, Bill Conrad was the third child of Fredrick Raymond Conrad, Sr. and the former Edith Estelle Stevens, both of Elizabeth, NJ. He grew up on his parent’s 400-acre cattle ranch and citrus farm in an area that is now known as Brandon, Florida. He had one sister and three brothers, all of whom predeceased him.
Bill entered the United States Navy in May of 1943 and served as Electrician’s Mate First Class until May of 1946. He served on the USS Major, a Destroyer Escort, in both the European and Pacific theatres.
Just before his deployment, Bill met the former Agnes Armond Abrams (1925-2000) in Newport News, VA, and began a relationship that would eventually lead to their marriage on January 1, 1947, at the Conrad family manse in Limona.
After their marriage, the couple settled in Newport News, where Bill began work as a mechanic with the Shackleford Motor Company. Upon the arrival of his first child in 1953, he moved to a similar mechanic’s position at Sears & Roebuck in Newport News (“for the benefits”). He remained employed there until his retirement in 1989.
Bill was a resident of the Virginia Peninsula for over 50 years before moving to the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, DC in 2003, where he aged gracefully and with dignity until his peaceful death on May 29th.
Bill is survived by his daughter Debra, of Yorktown, VA, and his son Mark of Annapolis, MD.
