illiam A. “Bill” Cooper, Sr., 84, a 25-year resident of Riva and previously of Rockville, MD, passed away on December 27, 2015. Born in Washington, DC on December 21, 1931 to the late Deaver and Myrtle Cooper, Bill served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War era. He pursued a career as structural detailer and retired from Bignel Watkins Hasser Architects in Annapolis. Bill was a talented artist and cartoonist who also enjoyed boating and fishing. He was a great patriot and devoted husband. Bill was preceded in death by his son, Jerry Benfield and one brother. He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley J. Cooper; one son, Billy Cooper of Atlanta, GA; one daughter, Gail McDermott of Monrovia, MD; and five grandchildren, Megan, Spencer, Sonny, Will and Derek. Family and friends are invited to Bill’s funeral service at 2PM on Wednesday, December 30 at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. A private interment will be held at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675.
