illiam P. “Bill” Jones, 79, died unexpectedly of congestive heart failure due to complications from cancer on the morning of Tuesday, August 10, surrounded by his family at his home in Delaware. He was born on November 8, 1941, at Old Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C., the son of the late Almon and Rita Jones. Bill graduated from St. Theresa’s Elementary School in Washington, D.C. and then Archbishop Carroll High School in 1959. He attended Wheeling College (WV) where he graduated with a B.S. in Biology in 1964. Bill then attended Georgetown University School of Medicine where he earned his M.D. in 1968. During his time at Georgetown, he met and married the former Patricia Ann Reichhardt of Silver Spring, MD on November 26, 1966. Following graduation, he served one tour in the Vietnam War Zone as a Navy lieutenant medical officer aboard the USS Niagara Falls (AFS-3). During his service he accumulated six decorations, including the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. After his residency in pathology at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC, Bill joined the staff at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, MD, where he was employed as an Emergency Physician from 1970 to 1981. After leaving Suburban, he briefly joined the staff at Kimbrough Army Community Hospital in Fort Meade, MD as an Emergency Physician and at the same time he launched his family practice. As a Family Physician from September 1982 to August 2019 from his offices in Lothian and then Shady Side, Bill cared for many patients from all over the State of Maryland. In September of 1983 Bill was also hired as a Deputy Medical Examiner for the State of Maryland. It was here where he formed many relationships with both county and city police departments and many local funeral homes. He resigned from this department on August 2, 2021. Throughout his life, Bill was affiliated with numerous medical groups and associations, most noteworthy being a member of the Maryland Academy of Family Physicians where in 2017 he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. Also, he was a member of The American Society of Clinical Pathologists (emeritus member), The American Academy of Family Physicians, The Georgetown Clinical Society, and he was an original participant for Physicians for the Maryland Right to Life. Bill enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies and interests, most prominently, photography. He was a professional sports photographer, having his photos published in Inside Lacrosse Magazine, garnering two covers. His photographs of college lacrosse games were widely seen in other publications as well. He also was an avid traveler, particularly to Ireland where he visited multiple times to celebrate his Irish heritage. He visited all 50 states in his lifetime and numerous National Parks. Bill was a devout Catholic and a member of the Holy Family Parrish in his hometown of Davidsonville, MD for 40 years. He cared very deeply for his family, friends, and every single person that he cared for over his long career as a physician. Bill is survived by his wife of 54 years, Patricia; his sons, Peter of Arnold, MD, James of Del Ray Beach, FL and David (Neasah) of Annapolis, MD and his six grandchildren, Hanna, James, Mary, Owen, Jon and Teagan. Friends are invited to celebrate Bill's life at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD on Sunday, August 15 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 W. Central Ave., Davidsonville, MD on Monday, August 16 at 11 am. Interment will follow at Lakemont Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Davidsonville, MD. The Jones Family is requesting in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to St. Ann’s Center for Children, Youth and Family, 4901 Eastern Ave., Hyattsville, MD 20782 or The Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
