illiam “Bill” Joseph Marose, 61, of Columbia, MD passed away on Wednesday, March 23, 2016, following complications of heart surgery. He was born on July 9, 1954, in Houston, Texas to Theodore Joseph Marose and Eve Joan Ramberg. Bill grew up on Long Island, NY and graduated from Sayville High School in 1972. He went on to earn a B.S. in Entomology and Applied Ecology from the University of Delaware in 1976 and an MS in Education with courses at Temple University and University of Maryland. As a high school science teacher at Archbishop Spalding High School in Severn, MD (1989-2011); Regina High School in Hyattsville, MD (1986-89); and Notre Dame Academy in Washington, DC (1980-86), Bill found great joy in showing the everyday relevance of science. His fun and innovative teaching style reached thousands of students and inspired numerous careers in the sciences. During summer breaks and in retirement, Bill operated a consulting business that helped farmers with pest management decision-making. Much of Bill’s free time was devoted to the Boy Scouts of America. He was an Eagle Scout and camp counselor throughout high school and college. As an adult and with a son of his own, he took on leadership roles in Pack 61, Troop 649, the National Pike District, and earned the Silver Beaver distinguished service award. Through teaching, scouting, and consulting, Bill dedicated his life to the education and mentoring of others and the strengthening of communities in which he lived. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Betty Hughes Marose, and their son, William Andrew Marose, both of Columbia, MD; brother, James Andrew Marose of Callahan, FL; and step-mother, Anne Marie Marose of Jacksonville, FL. A memorial service will be held at the Wilde Lake Interfaith Center, 10431 Twin Rivers Road, Columbia, MD 21044 on Friday, April 8 with visitation from 5-7 p.m. and service at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Boy Scouts of America, American Heart Association or American Diabetes Association. Or as Bill so often did, please donate the gift of time and service to youth mentoring programs.
