illiam C. “Bill” Mitchell, Jr., Esquire, passed away May 27, 2023 from congestive heart failure. Born in Trenton, NJ on February 1, 1932 to the late William C. Mitchell, Sr. and Alice Rairdon Mitchell, he was educated at Loyola High School in Towson, MD, graduated from Georgetown Prep School in Garrett Park, MD, earned a BA in Philosophy from Catholic University in Washington, DC and his J. D from Catholic University as well. He was married to Priscilla Church Mitchell for 22 years, his inseparable buddy since 1975. Bill served in the United States Army as SP3, court reporter in Korea. He was an attorney in private practice in Annapolis and Anne Arundel County beginning in 1962, a mediator, a temporary zoning hearing officer for Anne Arundel County, a hearing officer for the Board of Education and a real estate broker. He was later admitted to the Court of Appeals of Maryland and the Federal District Court of the United States. Bill had many professional memberships. Those included the Maryland State Bar Association, a member and past president of the Anne Arundel Bar Association, the Anne Arundel County Bar Foundation, member and past president of the American Inns of Court, the Maryland Bar Foundation and the St. Thomas More Society. He was past president of the Young Democrats of Anne Arundel County, a past member and vice president of the Young Democrats of the State of Maryland, and was a founder, attorney and member of many local and civic organizations. He received many awards for leadership, outstanding service to various bar associations, pro bono service and public service. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Annapolis and sang bass baritone in the church choir for many years. He also sang in the chorus of the Baltimore Civic Opera Company for five years. Since 1968 he was a member of the Annapolis Yacht Club. He was an avid sailor, sailing as first mate aboard the 60 foot log canoe “Mustang” out of Annapolis for 16 years, and as skipper of his own sailing vessels, “Inishbofin” and “Silver Lining”, with his first mate and wife Priscilla by his side. He was also a member of the Colonial Players of Annapolis, Annapolis Elks Lodge 622 and former attorney and member of the Annapolis Opera Company. He was Catholic, Irish, American and a Democrat, and proud of it. Bill is survived by the love of his life, his wife Priscilla; his sister, Alice Fitzgibbon; five nephews and nieces and many grand nephews and grand nieces. Family and friends are invited to a memorial gathering on Friday, June 16 from 4-7 PM at Kalas Funeral Home and Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. A memorial Mass will be offered on Saturday, June 17 at 9 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 109 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis. Interment will be private.
