n Loving Memory of Willie Mae (Mae Mae) Salmond-Womble Sunrise: July 10, 1939 — Sunset: June 30, 2025 Willie Mae Salmond-Womble, affectionately known as “Mae Mae,” was born on July 10, 1939, in Kershaw County, Camden, South Carolina, to Leila Belle “Sudie” and Foreman “Jailor” Salmond Sr. The eldest of eight children, she was an unwavering presence in the lives of many. Willie Mae was a proud graduate of Jackson School, Class of 1957, where she shined as both a cheerleader and basketball player. A devoted member of Wesley United Methodist Church, her foundation of faith carried her through every chapter of her life. After high school, she ventured beyond South Carolina, spending some time in New York before settling in Washington, D.C. There, she pursued her calling in healthcare, continuing her education through evening programs at Woodrow, the ManPower Program, and D.C. Teachers College.
