inifred Katherine Herndon, 102, died November 16, 2008. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 4, 2008 at 10:00 AM at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, Annapolis, MD. A private graveside service will take place in Arlington National Cemetery at 3:00 PM, the Rev. Gid Montjoy officiating. Arrangements by the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, Edgewater, MD. Mrs. Herndon was born in Savannah, GA on February 27, 1906, to Charlotte Katherine and John Elias Owens, and grew up in Newport News, VA. She was the eldest of three daughters. She attended business school in Linthicum Heights, MD, before enrolling in William and Mary College in Williamsburg, VA., graduating in 1929 with a BA in English/History. She taught school in Ft. Eustis, VA where she met Lt. Carl B. Herndon. They were married September 3, 1932, thus beginning her life as an Army wife. During her husband's tours of duty with the U.S. Army, they lived in Georgia, Zamboanga, Philippine Islands, where she again taught school, Rhode Island, Panama, Louisiana, Maryland, Kansas, Virginia and Germany. She was a member of the Altar Guild of Trinity Episcopal Church, Newport, RI for 28 years; a member of AAUW (American Association of University Women), Colonial Garden Club of Annapolis and St. Anne's Episcopal Church of Annapolis, MD. She was preceded in death by her husband in December 1964, her parents, two sisters, Ellison Owens Morton and Olwen Owens Kurdle; a grandson, Vincent R. Tubbs in 1994 and 2 nephews, Joseph Kurdle and Albert Kurdle. Survivors include two daughters, Charlotte H. (Missie) Tubbs of Annapolis, MD and Elinor F. (Poppy) McCarty and her husband William (Bill) of Amarillo, TX, five grandchildren, Terrie Tubbs of Carmichael, CA, Douglas McCarty of Phoenix, AZ, Robyn McCarty of Austin, TX, Heidi Milton and her husband Jay of Marietta, GA and Laurie Layne and her husband Eric of Pflugerville, TX, 6 great-grandchildren: Erin, Alec and Jack de Freitas of Marietta, GA and Patrick, William and Catherine Layne of Pflugerville, TX; two nieces, Patricia Manspeaker of St. Michael's MD and Susan Bailey, niece-in-law, Becki Kurdle and nephews Kyle Kurdle and Christopher Kurdle. She is also survived by several cousins, Hunter, Paul Joseph and Ned Kesmodel, Molly Kesmodel and Kate Ellsworth, Joe Hunter and his wife Betty.
