Richard Oliver Chandler - Obituary

R

ichard Oliver Chandler, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, who entered into eternal rest at the age of 80 on January 1, 2026, in the comforting presence of his family. He was born in Washington, D.C., on June 18, 1945, to Gilbert Chandler and Ollie (White) Chandler. A native son of the District, Richard graduated from Phelps Senior High School in Washington, D.C., before beginning a distinguished 34-year career with the Defense Intelligence Agency. As an Imagery and Photo Specialist, he was admired for his professionalism, discretion, and dedication to mission and country. Richard was a man of faith who embraced the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church. He lived with humility, gratitude, and a steadfast devotion to his family. His faith guided his character and sustained him throughout his life. On August 14, 1965, Richard married the love of his life, Suzanne (Bell) Chandler. To her and long-time friends, he was affectionately known as “Dicky.” Richard and Sue enjoyed more than six decades of marriage marked by love, laughter, patience, and happiness. Together, they built a family rooted in loyalty, compassion, and faith. Richard is survived by his wife, Suzanne; two daughters, Christine and Lisa; and his son, Richard. He was blessed with five grandchildren, Olivia, Issac, Jordan, Victor, and Zoey, and one great-grandchild, Storie; each a source of joy and pride. Richard was preceded in death by his sisters, Gilberta and Daisy. Outside of his professional life, Richard maintained a passionate loyalty to Washington football. His love for the Washington Commanders brought him years of happiness, anger, excitement, and frustration. He was also a masterful card player and relentless trash talker, especially when playing spades, bid-whist, and pinochle, which earned him the nicknames “Tricky Dicky” and “House.” In addition to cards, Richard loved music and singing along to his favorite groups such as The Temptations, The Stylistics, The Delfonics, and other Motown classics. Richard will be fondly remembered for his steady presence, strong moral foundation, and the love he freely shared with those closest to him. Though he will be deeply missed, his family takes comfort in knowing that he has returned to the care of our Lord and is at peace in His eternal light. Relatives and friends are invited to Richard's Life Celebration on Friday, January 23, 2026 from 10 A.M. until the start of the service at 11 A.M. at Saint Thomas More Catholic Church, 4275 4th Street SE Washington, DC 20032. Interment to follow after service at Resurrection Cemetery, 8000 Woodyard Road, Clinton, MD 20735.
