Pilar Palacios Pe was born on October 11, 1956 in Lagao, Philippines to Cesario Palacios and Paz Ubeda Palacios. She was the eighth of nine children, having four brothers and four sisters. The Palacios family were ranchers and farmers, and one of the first to settle the area in southern Mindanao known today as General Santos City. Pilar was raised between the family’s ranch (named Swiza), and their home in town, but regarded Swiza as her favorite place on Earth, always preferring simple, country living to the hectic bustle of city life.

After finishing high school, she moved to the capital city of Manila to attend college. Later, pushed by an urge for adventure, she decided to explore the United States, not initially intending to make it her new home. She lived in New York City for some time, where she met her future husband, Odirolf. The couple married in 1983, eventually settling down on a farm in Charles County, Maryland, where they raised their two children.

She was a woman of strength, courage, and honor, but knew never to take herself too seriously. A natural comedian and entertainer, she had the ability to lift the mood of everyone around her, brightening up any room with her presence and infectious laugh. She had an amazing sense of humor, shamelessly breaking out into song and dance whenever and wherever she felt it was necessary.

Although she was a warm and loving wife and mother, she had a passion for caring that went beyond the role of a homemaker, and felt called into the nursing profession. For nearly thirty years, Pilar worked as a nurse, only stopping in April 2020, when she contracted the novel coronavirus while working on the frontline of the pandemic. Despite some urging early on from her family to retire for her own health and wellbeing, she refused, believing it was her duty to help especially in a time of crisis. A devout Catholic, her unshakeable faith gave her the courage to continue undeterred by the risks to her own safety, ultimately and selflessly giving her life in the service of others.

Pilar is survived by her husband, Odirolf, and her two sons, Alexander and Nicholas. Although they deeply mourn her passing, they take great pride in her sacrifice. She was a true hero and will always be remembered as such. To honor her memory, her sons will continue her work by establishing a charitable organization with the mission of helping other families of essential workers that have been devastated as a result of this global tragedy.

Alisa Anne Scible, 59, a resident of Edgewater, passed away after a protracted battle with cancer on May 8, 2020, surrounded by her family. Born on September 25, 1960 in Washington, DC, Alisa spent her childhood amongst an incredibly large extended family in Maryland before moving to Naples, Italy. She attended Forrest Sherman High School in Naples and returned to the US in 1978. Soon thereafter, Alisa met her lifetime love, David Townshend Scible, and on May 17, 1980 they were married. Together they had two daughters and Alisa retired from a career in real estate to raise them at home. For nearly two decades she was an active volunteer for her children’s schools and activities; leading Girl Scout troops, organizing fundraisers, coaching clubs, and investing herself in their development and upbringing. When her daughters were grown she began writing again and published a series of contemporary romance novels. Alisa had a passion for life and people. She was vivacious, with a wide smile and genuineness that made friends everywhere she went. She filled every room with laughter. To know her was to love her. With chronic wanderlust, Alisa traveled with family and friends at every opportunity. She enjoyed planning trips and events, writing, and spending warm days at the beach with her toes in the sand and the ocean waves circling her ankles. Above all else, Alisa was most devoted to family and enjoying her time as a wife, mother, and grandmother to her three young grand-babies. Alisa lived loud and loved hard, with a presence much larger than her being. The bigger the vessel moving through the water, the bigger the wake left behind. Her too-soon departure from this earth is a gaping loss and she is missed beyond measure. Alisa was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Camden and Madelyn Terry. She is survived by her husband, David Scible; her two daughters, Kristina Anne (Justin) Terry of Edgewater and Mary Melissa Scible of Tracy’s Landing; three grandchildren, Isla Anne, Amelia Helen and Justin Townshend Terry; her parents, Harry and Elizabeth Cotten of Riva; two brothers, Harry (Tish) Cotten and Timothy Cotten and a host of extended family and dear friends. Donna Marie Albertson was born January 20, 1934 in Waverly, New York, and died May 7, 2020 in Annapolis, Maryland. During her life, she lived in Elmira, NY, Ithaca, NY, Orlando, Fl, and Annapolis, MD. She performed on horseback in rodeos, blew the lid off her high school math classes, obtained a chemistry degree after putting herself through college working at Thatcher Glass, fell in love with Don Cole, an attorney who she married in 1956, raised four children, ran a successful and ever-expanding business, started her own consulting company, and in retirement turned her prodigious energy to teaching the game of bridge to other retirees in order to have an endless supply of bridge partners. Donna also enjoyed organizing book clubs and outings around the Orlando area, and entertaining her seven grandkids, all the while dispensing life lessons, strong opinions, and admonitions to push ourselves to do more and be better.

Donna worked at Corning Inc. (Corning Glass) as a chemist for three years after her graduation from Elmira College in 1956. Once her first of four children was born, she left Corning Inc. and focused on other pursuits. With endless energy while raising her children, Donna also worked many political campaigns on behalf of the Chemung County Republican Party, ran Elmira College’s largest fundraiser, the Octagon Fair, taught college chemistry, was a Girl Scout troop leader, participated on the advisory board of Hedding Methodist Church and Westside Methodist Church, taught Sunday school, and was chairwoman of the Elmira City School District committee to oversee consolidation of schools.

In 1976, Donna took a position as the Business Manager of the Manpower Temporary Services franchise in Elmira NY. The business soon ballooned into a leading employment service, and in 1988 Donna became the Regional General Manager, after opening satellite offices in Ithaca, Corning, and Norwich, NY. She assumed management of the Binghamton office, and also initiated and opened the region’s Technical Division, the first woman in Manpower’s franchises to do so. Donna won the Manpower national “Power Award” for the largest year over year revenue increase, five years in a row, from 1981 to 1985.

Donna became very involved in regional economic development - elected in 1984 to be the first woman president of the Chemung County Chamber of Commerce, a Chamber board director for six years, and a board director of Southern Tier of New York Economic Growth, all during some very rough economic years for upstate New York. Donna was customarily asked to take on some of the difficult and controversial projects that faced Elmira.

She was selected in 1990 as the first Chemung County recipient of the Athena Award, a national Chamber-sponsored award for businesswomen of notable achievement in their communities. But she never stopped taking up projects for her family; she sewed her kids clothes, hosted amazing birthday parties with elaborate home-baked birthday cakes, planned family reunions and family vacations at every historic site in America, spent weekends with her family boating on Seneca and Cayuga Lake, knitted very large Christmas stockings for all the grandkids and energetically dragged family visitors around to every Disney World theme park as often as they could tolerate. In retirement, she planned many trips for she and Don – continuing to explore the world.

Donna lived a very full and very happy life. She did everything with “hyper enthusiasm”. A close friend described their first meeting: “I met her when she and I were class mothers for our sons’ first grade at Hoffman School. She immediately organized the activities and classroom, and she had a laugh that filled the room. The minute I heard that laugh I said to myself, ‘I have to get to know that woman.’” Donna spent the past two years in the Alzheimer’s unit of Brightview retirement home in Annapolis. Right up until her death, she had a well-known infectious laugh and continued to make friends and enjoy life wherever she lived, including the staff in Alzheimer’s facility. Her four kids are continually amazed and impressed by her accomplishments and the people who loved being with her.

Donna Albertson Cole was the only child of Don and Cecile Albertson. Donna was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Attorney Donald Cole, in 2014. She is survived by her four children: Elizabeth (Cole) Powers, married to Chris Powers; Marjorie Cole, married to Robin Doane; Lucinda Cole; and Raymond Cole, with Raquel Ramirez, as well as her grandchildren: Mark, Kate, Grace, and David Powers, children of Beth and Chris Powers; Cole and Walker Semans, children of Cindy Cole; and Kiara Taveras, daughter of Raquel Ramirez; and her first cousin Dave Albertson, married to Sharon Albertson.

A celebration will be planned for later this year in Elmira. In lieu of flowers, tax deductible donations can be sent to Elmira New York’s performing arts center:

Johnny Walker Guy, age 79, passed away on May 6, 2020 from a stroke due to a very rare form of leukemia. He has born in West Palm Beach, FL and grew up moving with his parents and living in many cities in the United States.
Johnny retired from the United States Secret Service with a 23-year career that began in 1963, after graduating from Florida State University in 1962 with majors in Criminology and Abnormal Psychology. He fulfilled a “first” by becoming the youngest Secret Service agent ever hired.
His career spanned many years of service to Presidents and Vice Presidents including Kennedy, Johnson, Humphrey, Agnew, Carter, and Reagan as well as numerous presidential candidates and foreign dignitaries. He was head of the protective detail for Pope John Paul II, who delighted in calling him “Johnny”, during his six-city visit to the U.S. in 1979.
The day after retiring from the Secret Service, he immediately went to work for what turned out to be an additional 26-year career at the U.S. Department of State as SAIC, Protective Liaison Division, Diplomatic Security, then as Senior Policy Advisor and Chief of Staff, Office of Assistant Secretary for Diplomatic Security, and later as Security and Law Enforcement Coordinator for the Bureau of Diplomatic Security. In total, he served 49 continuous years in Federal Law Enforcement, another “first” in his profession. During those almost 50 years of service, Johnny traveled to every state in the U.S. and nearly 50 countries globally. He was a Life Member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) where he continued to share his expertise working on multi-national policing and crime efforts, including combating terrorism. His leadership and supervisory skills, best summed up by what agents remembered who worked under his guidance, are said to be that he commanded respect, not from fear, but from kindness. Over the years, both on the job and in retirement, Johnny continued to be called upon by agents, friends, and family, young and old, for advice and counsel, and to share his many years of war stories regarding his experiences.
After retirement in 2016, he was called to be the Secret Service Technical Advisor for the movie, Killing Reagan, adapted from the book of same name by Bill O’Reilly. To honor his contribution to the film, the director gave Johnny a cameo role as a Senator. In October 2016, he and his family attended The World Premier of Killing Reagan at The Newseum in Washington DC.
Johnny was a dedicated elder and member of Christian Community Presbyterian Church in Bowie, MD for 53 years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather (Pop Pop), uncle, son, coach, and a loyal confidant to family and friends throughout a lifetime of service to others.
His wishes are to leave those close to him by going forever forward, not behind, with a family he has always faithfully supported, including his loving and dedicated wife, Allison, who was by his side for 59 years; his adored son, Stephen, and daughter-in-law, Jeanette to whom he was very close; and the loves of his life, his three grandchildren, Jackson, Gracie, and Matthew.
Arrangements will be made at a later date due to COVID-related restrictions.
In lieu of flowers or meals and because of COVID-related concerns, donations are gratefully accepted to Christian Community Presbyterian Church, 3120 Belair Drive, Bowie, MD 20715, http://ccpc.bowiemd.org, or your favorite charity. C
