With heartfelt sadness, we announce the passing of Joan Mavis Richardson, also known as Queen, a beloved wife and mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who left us peacefully on Thursday morning, October 31, 2024, at her home surrounded by her family.


Joan was a devoted mother and wife whose love and dedication knew no bounds. Joan grew up in Port of Spain Trinidad and learned the importance of hard work early on. She was a devout servant as one of Jehovah Witnesses and cherished the ministry. She talked to anyone who wanted to have a conversation about Jehovah God. She became known as “teacher Joan,” to everyone who knew her.

 She was the true definition of being kind, generous, and inspiring to all who crossed her path. The dining table always had room for an extra plate or two. She enjoyed many years as a regular pioneer. Joan love gardening with a passion. Joan touched many hearts and inspired countless individuals to deepen their faith. She believed in the power of prayer and the importance of fellowship, reminding us all, that we are united through the
grace of God. 

She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering devotion to God. She will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Joan was survived by her husband of 65 years, Oswin Richardson, 1 brother and 1 sister, 6 children, 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by John-Mark (son) and Faith Anise (granddaughter).

With heartfelt sadness, we announce the passing of Donald Truman Williams a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who left us peacefully on Thursday evening, October 31, 2024, at his home surrounded by his family. Don was a devoted family man whose love and dedication knew no bounds.

Born to Andrew and Theresa in Jefferson City, Missouri on September 28, 1935, Don grew up surrounded by family values and learned the importance of hard work early on. He went on to own his own business, expertly repairing eyeglasses for many years.

Don, fondly known as Dad by many, was known for his warm smile and generous spirit. To everyone who knew him, he was the true definition of an amazing man—kind, generous, and inspiring to all who crossed his path. Don found joy in the simple things, walking trails, visiting parks, and car rides. In his younger days, he was often seen using his hands, whether it was tinkering with cars or repairing various things.

Don would often say "Peace be with you" and, "See you in church," during his goodbyes. In his lifetime, Don touched many hearts and inspired countless individuals to deepen their faith. He believed in the power of prayer and the importance of fellowship, reminding us all that we are united through the grace of God. 

Don was blessed with a loving partnership with his late wife, Barbara. Together, they embraced the joys and challenges of raising five wonderful children: Brenda Callahan (dec. Ron), Dale (Marilyn), Mary Theresa Byars (Jerry), Ernest, and Vicki Williams-Fry (Robert). Don's unwavering commitment to his family was evident in everything he did; he was a guiding light and a source of strength, always prioritizing his loved ones above all.

Don was a beloved parent, grandparent, and great-grandparent. He is survived by his loving grandchildren: Ashley (Ayden and Zayne), Brandon, Brianna, Charlotte, Christopher (Andrew, Cadence, Jackson, Julia), Jason (Aaliyah, Hayley, and Trinity), Matthew, Mark (Gianna), Melanie (Kamdyn), and Mercedes (Cameron and Tallon), Michael C. (Madeline and Jacob) and Michael W. (Joseph and Jaylynn) and Shane (Shane and Shannon).

Don faced life’s challenges with extraordinary grace and resilience, holding cherished memories of Barbara close to his heart. Their enduring love story remains an inspiration to us all. He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering devotion to God. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

The viewing for Don will be held on Monday, November 4, from 6 PM to 8 PM at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater MD. A funeral service will take place on Tuesday, November 5, at 11 AM at the same location, followed by a burial at Fort Lincoln Cemetery. Margaret Hardesty Schmitt, better known as Betty, passed away on October 31, 2024, in her home in Harwood, Maryland where she resided for the last 15 years. Prior to that, Betty resided in Edgewater for approximately 55 years. Betty suffered an intracranial hemorrhage after a fall 2 weeks prior to her death.

Betty was born on December 17, 1926, in Annapolis, Maryland. She was a high school graduate and worked for the Board of Education as an accounting clerk for 20 years. Betty was a member of Davidsonville United Methodist Church and served on numerous church committees over the years. She also enjoyed canning and freezing her home-grown fruits and vegetables.

Betty is survived by her husband, Adam W. Schmitt, of 15 years; her daughter, Peggi Michaels of Odenton; her son, Howard Hardesty of Edgewater; 3 grandchildren, Preston Bembe of Severna Park, Richard Bembe of Westminster, and Alison Mascetti of Stevensville, as well as 5 great-grandchildren. Betty’s parents, Edward H. Dougherty and Caroline E. Doughtery are both deceased.

There will be a viewing at Kalas Funeral Home and Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD on November 5 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The funeral will be held at Davidsonville United Methodist Church at 11:00 am on November 6.

Bernadine "Bernie" Butler passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 30, 2024, at age 90.  She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mia Jones and Kent Jones of West River, MD, two grandchildren Vigs Jones Clarfield of Germantown, MD and Ryan Jones of Chicago, IL, and two sisters, Jean Corcoran of Philadelphia, PA and Nancy Cappello of Langhorne, PA.  She was born on November 28, 1933, in Hazleton, PA, the eldest daughter of Albert and Helen Cappello. She spent her last years living at Brightview South River in Edgewater, MD but is formerly from Rehoboth Beach, DE.  She and her husband of 61 years, Howard Butler, also spent winters and springs in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico enjoying the warmth, colors and culture of that beautiful city.  

Bernie was an art teacher at Lake Forest South and East Elementary Schools in Harrington and Frederica, DE for 25 years after earning her bachelor’s degree in art education at Delaware State College in Dover, DE.  She loved art, was an amazing painter and sculptor, adding color to her life whenever possible. She also enjoyed knitting, sewing, and many other forms of arts and crafts.  Bernie and Howard spent their retirement years traveling the world and were very involved with the community in Rehoboth Beach while at home.  She played bridge, was a teacher and student at the School of Lifelong Learning, did yoga, and was a member of the Four Seasons Progressive Dinner Group. She loved being a grandmother and spent hours providing art projects and playing games with her grandchildren when they were young.  She loved music and dancing throughout her life and even when she rarely spoke in her declining years, would still sing songs and dance to the music.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Edgardo “Ed” Griarte, beloved father, husband, and grandfather, who went to be with the Lord on October 29, 2024, at the age of 75.

Ed was born on January 20, 1949, and lived a life full of faith, love, and devotion. A firm believer in Jesus Christ and a proud born-again Christian, Ed’s life was marked by his deep commitment to his faith. His belief in the power of God’s grace and the love of Christ was evident in everything he did. Through his words and actions, Ed shared his faith with family, friends, and everyone he encountered, offering encouragement, love, and prayers whenever needed.

Known as “Ed” to his friends, he was a man of kindness, humility, and strength. He was a devoted husband to his loving wife, Marian Griarte, with whom he shared a bond of faith and partnership for many years. As a father, Ed was a steadfast presence, guiding his children with wisdom, love, and an unwavering belief in the importance of family and faith. As a grandfather, his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren, sharing with them the lessons and love that defined his life.

Ed is survived by his wife, Marian C. Griarte, his daughters, Wendy Alcantara and Katherine Sampilo, his sons-in laws, Gerald Alcantara and Philip Sampilo, and his grandchildren, AJ Alcantara (age 18), Ava Alcantara (age 15), Isaiah Sampilo (age 22), Josiah Sampilo (age 9), and Aezra Sampilo (age 4). His family takes comfort in knowing that he is now in the presence of his Savior, experiencing peace and joy in eternal life.

Though we mourn his passing, we are deeply grateful for the time we had with Ed. His legacy of love, faith, and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. We find peace in knowing that he is now in the presence of the Lord, where there is no more pain or sorrow, only eternal joy and peace. We will always remember you, Dad, with your special smile, a caring heart and generous soul. Your love will always be with us, and you will be forever loved. Your memory will remain in our hearts always.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Harry Duane "Uncle Bud" Davis on Monday, October 28, 2024. Born on February 10, 1956, in Washington, DC, to Martha A. Ainsworth Davis and the late Harry Edward Davis, Jr., Harry was a painter by profession who was also a perfectionist. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and being on his computer, and he loved to cook and compare recipes. In addition to his father, Harry was preceded in death by his sister, Cheryl Trader, and his niece, Stephanie Ann Darling. In addition to his mother, Harry is survived by his siblings, Gary E. Davis and Sandra J. Chester; his brothers-in-law, Randy O'Sullivan and Mark Trader; and several nieces and nephews. Nestor Juco Miraflor, 67, of Clinton, Maryland, passed away on Saturday, October 26, 2024. He had been a resident of Prince George’s County, Maryland, for over 30 years. 

Born in Cavite, Philippines, on June 4, 1957, Nestor was one of many siblings and came from a proud lineage of hardworking Filipino immigrants. At a young age, Nestor immigrated to the United States, where he began his distinguished career in the U.S. Army. His service took him around the world, including South Korea, Germany, Guam, Iraq, and various states across the U.S. After his military career, Nestor continued to serve his country through supervisory roles at Joint Base Andrews and Bolling Air Force Base.

Outside of work, Nestor was known for his love of life. He was a passionate Washington Redskins (now Commanders) fan, enjoyed fishing, and loved to spend time with family and friends, often taking the spotlight on the dance floor or at karaoke sessions. He was the life of the party and had a gift for making everyone smile during family gatherings.

Nestor is survived by his devoted wife, Liza, and their children: Nelson (Tanya), Christine, Keann, and Asia. He is also survived by his siblings: Lourdes, Elisa, Lito, Ruby, Dante, and Imee, as well as numerous relatives both in the United States and the Philippines. 

He was preceded in death by his mother, Liwayway; father, Eliseo; and his older brother, Nomer.

Nestor will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.

Dorothy Disney (Dottie) passed away peacefully on October 25, 2024 at age 91.  She was married for 50 years to Raymond Disney and they had a daughter, Karen Disney Lippa.  They lived in Annapolis and loved to travel, visiting many countries for Raymond’s work and vacations.
  
Dottie was born 18 minutes after her identical twin sister, Peggy.  The twins were as close as sisters could be.  They spent every possible moment together and dressed alike every day until the very end.  It was their pleasure to fool people that couldn’t tell them apart.  After high school they went to nursing school together at Church Home in Baltimore.  Peggy’s children thought of Aunt Dot as their second mom.  They spent every birthday and holiday together and Peggy’s grandkids and great grandkids also loved Aunt Dot with all their hearts.

Dottie is survived by her brother, Bobby Robinson.  She is predeceased by her husband Raymond, daughter Karen and her sisters, Peggy Sullivan and Bunny Woodburn.  Dottie was always very kind and loving and she enjoyed visiting with friends and family any chance she could.  She will be missed by everybody that knew her.

Edith Marie Bolling was born Friday August 24, 1945, in Morven, North Carolina the thirteenth of thirteen children (aka the baby) to the late Siffus Steele and Mary (Jacie) Liles-Steele.  After 79 years of a wonderful life, Edith peacefully departed this life to join her parents, siblings, husband, other relatives, and friends on Friday October 25, 2024.  Before her transition, several family members were with Edith comforting her with prayers, stories, and goodbyes.  The siblings preceding Edith in death were Lewis, Haywood, Bernelle, Herman, Grace, Theodore, Julia, Doris, James, Peggy, Anne, and Yvonne.

Edith’s Christian education began at Harris Chapel AME Zion Church in Morven, NC where her grandparents were founding members.  In the early 80’s Edith followed her sister Yvonne joining Allen Chapel AME Church in Southeast Washington, DC., which became the family’s home church.  At Allen Chapel, Edith served as an usher for 30 plus years serving on several auxiliary ministry groups such as children’s Sunday school leader, Women of Allen Hospitality, beautification committee, and visiting with members of Allen’s sick and shut-in families.
 
Edith began her education in Anson County Public School System in Morven, North Carolina graduating from McRae High School.  After high school, Edith left the comfort and safety of her parents following her sisters to Washington, DC.  There she met and married Frederick (Rick) Bolling creating sons Jerry and Marc.  As a new wife and mother, Edith recognized she wanted a career like many of her sisters and took a teacher’s aide positions at Simon and Green Elementary Schools within the DC Public School (DCPS) system.  Edith having the encouragement of Rick, attended and graduated from Cortez Peters Business School (aka the first black business school in the country) becoming a proficient typist at 121 words per minute.  Upon graduation she started a new position within DCPS as a junior secretary at Douglas Jr. High School working her way up the ranks to senior office manager.  

Upon the closure of Douglas Jr. High, Edith relocated to Noyes Elementary School where she stayed until retirement ending 38 years of service to DCPS.  One of Edith’s joys was keeping a watchful eye over her granddaughter Sauda who she raised from the age of four.  Although retired, Edith could not stay still and started part-time employment with Prince George County Public School System in an array of jobs such as crossing guard, teacher’s aide, cafeteria cook, and school bus aide for disabled children.  When needed, Edith became a full/part-time caretaker for her husband, sister Yvonne, and sister Peggy.

Edith is survived by her son Dr. Jerry A. Bolling (Chandra) and their children Marc A., Kyle V., and Troy M.; son Marc Bolling, granddaughter Sauda Z. Bolling, and two great-grand dogs Archie and Coco.  Additionally, she leaves a sister-in-law Evelent (James) Steele and two brothers-in-law Leo (Doris) Johnson, Thomas (Grace) Johnson, a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, great-grandnephews, and great-grandnieces too many to name individually.  There is no universe big enough, wide enough, or expansive enough to cover her life and no one or nothing could possibly fill the void of her passing.  But loving her as much as we did, we know it is best she goes onto this new journey without us until the day we join her in her heavenly home.  ~ The Family of Edith Marie Bolling

On October 25, 2024 our mother Joanne Dumene passed away from natural causes at the age of 97.

Born Joan Hobbs in 1927 into the ‘Greatest Generation”, she grew up in upstate Pennsylvania during WW II, as the daughter of a coal miner. She attended Penn State University and it was there she met our father, Richard Dumene, and they were married in 1950.  She had three children, but lost her husband in 1974 after a long battle with cancer. 

Mom never remarried, remaining true to the memory of her husband. She worked full time as a civilian employee for the Navy.  With a journalism degree from Penn State, she was the chief editor of All Hands magazine – the official Navy publication.  In the 1970s and 80s she was an active advocate for women’s rights and equal pay for equal work.

Our mother raised three teenagers by herself, after our father’s death.  I’m sure we each gave her a run for her money back then!  But she managed to provide well for us and helped each of us out financially where she could.

She retired in 1994, but continued to travel and write freelance articles.
Unfortunately, she developed dementia starting about age 90, and by 92 had to be moved to a memory care facility. In spite of the mental handicap, she remained a strong and independent person until the end.

Joanne is survived by her three children, Michael Dumene, Richard Dumene, and Mary Chrusciel; her six grandchildren, Richard Dumene Jr., Christopher Dumene, Rachel Dumene, Victoria Dumene, Daniel Dumene, and Ryan Dumene; and her great granddaughter Lilly Dumene, who was able to meet Grammy days before she passed.
RIP Mama, Mom, Grammy.  We miss you.

Socorro (Coring) T. Vidanes, 90, of Lorton, VA passed away on Thursday, October 24, 2024. She was the widow of the late Sergio Doverte.

Socorro was born on October 19, 1934, to the late Teofila Vidanes and Manuel Vidanes in the Philippines. She grew up in Pandacan, Manila (Philippines). She moved to the US in the late 70’s and worked for The World Bank for three decades.

She loved going to church, spending time with family, singing Karaoke, and dancing. She had an adventurous spirit and was always ready to explore different experiences.

Socorro is survived by her sisters, Eleodora Payabyab and Victoria (Baby) McMahon; sister-in-law, Rebecca Vidanes (Carlos); as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. Socorro was preceded in death by her brothers, Juanito Vidanes and Carlos Vidanes; and brother-in-law, Feliciano Payabyab (Eleodora).

On Monday, November 4th, family and friends are invited to gather from 9-11 AM at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory: 6160 Oxon Hill Road Oxon Hill, MD 20745. Thomas Edwin Jarriel, age 89, passed on October 24, 2024. He was born on December 29, 1934 in LaGrange GA.  Tom grew up in Georgia and Louisiana, and graduated from Byrd High School in Shreveport, LA in 1952. He played varsity tennis at University of Houston graduating with a BA in Journalism. Tom met the love of his life, Joan Ellen Borgeson in Shreveport. Tom and Joan were wed in a small ceremony and spent their early days as an Army couple at Ft Monmouth, NJ, later living in Georgia, Potomac, MD, Edgewater, MD, and Ft Pierce, FL.

Tom is survived by Joan, his wife of 67 years and three sons:  Mike (Marilyn), Stephen (Lisa) and Jeffrey (Catherine). Tom and Joan are proud grandparents to Jenna (Matt), Ryan (Holly), Tess (Craig), Bailey (Ben), Matthew, Kaylin, and Marina, and their great grandchild Luke. As the youngest of six children, Tom was preceded in death by his parents William Lester Jarriel and Ruth Ella Knight, his siblings Jeri, Evelyn, Bill, Bob, and Dorothy.  His family gatherings wouldn’t be complete without Joan’s brothers Don (Marianne) and Bob (Beth).

Tom began his career in radio at KPRC Houston. He transitioned to television news, working as a reporter for ABC News from 1964 to 2002. He was the White House correspondent for ABC during the administrations of U.S. Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford.  In 1979, Tom joined the network's newsmagazine 20/20 as an investigative correspondent. He traveled across the US and the world assembling documentaries on subjects such as the defects in the American criminal justice system, wasteful spending by the United States Department of Defense, and transportation accidents. He received a number of Emmy Awards for his work. He often provided ABC News Brief updates and served as substitute anchor on World News Tonight. He retired from broadcasting in 2002.

Tom and Joan were passionate about their dogs including collies, a Scotty, several Golden Retrievers and finally their beloved Portuguese Water dog, Skipper, who gave them a focus and many opportunities for walks into their later years.

Tom was renowned for his ability to have a dialog with anyone, always loving to tell a story (perhaps a tall tale). With his extensive travel, he had quite a variety of experiences to draw upon. He enjoyed tennis, boating, fishing, and golf. One of his fondest summer activities was hosting crab feasts on the dock at his summer retreat on Turkey Point.
He will truly be missed!

It is with deep sorrow and love that we mourn the passing of John Heaphy, 92, an Air Force veteran, and longtime resident of Annapolis and Grasonville, MD. In the morning hours on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, John passed peacefully in his sleep at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, July 9, 1932, John graduated from Glen Burnie High School and then joined the Air Force where he served honorably during the Korean War. While training in Virginia, John met his beloved wife of 54 years, the late, Peggy Jean Heaphy. After leaving the Air Force he joined Westinghouse Defense Group in 1951 as a technician and continued working at the BWI site for 41 years until his retirement in 1992.

John was an avid hunter and fisherman and greatly enjoyed spending his time boating as well as “boasting” about his many trophy catches. He is survived by their three children John Patrick (Robin) Heaphy, Michael Anthony (Marianne) Heaphy and Daphne Lousie (Justino) Rivera (previously Heaphy), as well as 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

A private service and internment will be held at the family’s request.

Elizabeth Mester Bader, 71, passed away in the early morning of Wednesday October 23, 2024. She was known by most as “Beth” and, affectionately, “Bethy” to her siblings. 

Beth, one of four children, grew up in College Park, Maryland, and attended Catholic elementary and high school in the area. As a daughter of a strongly academic father, she naturally attended University of Maryland and earned a Bachelor of Science in English. Logically, with her newly minted degree in English, she joined the Department of Natural Resources for the state of Maryland to become a Forest Ranger. Though her English degree might not have been immediately necessary for this career path, her college years were certainly not wasted. She met her best friend and the love of her life, Mike Bader, who was the “nerdy” randomly assigned roommate of Beth’s English classmate, Bob Maholchic. Beth and Mike’s love was rooted in a deep and genuine friendship which remained constant and unwavering throughout their lives. 

As a self-proclaimed “hippie”, she loved all plants, animals, and flowers. She had a fierce admiration for nature which was deeply shared with her husband, Mike, and quickly instilled in her children, Jimmy and Jackie. She dedicated 30 years to her dream job protecting and respecting the trees and forests across the state of Maryland. Though her long battle with myotonic dystrophy forced her into retirement early, she spent her retirement years enjoying the outdoors as much as possible. Whether it was reading by the pool, taking morning walks along Mt. Vernon trail, or just sitting amongst the DIY botanical garden that her loving husband created on their secluded home and property, Beth always “stopped to smell the roses.” Even in the later stages of her illness, she would break out of the house on her scooter to take “laps” around the house on a makeshift track, hand laid by her adoring husband. 

In her younger days, Beth was an incredible athlete, though she never played “organized” sports in school. She would “humble brag” that she was first pick during neighborhood football or baseball games by her late older brother, Clark, which was the highest honor of the town. She continued her athletic fame as an adult slow-pitch softball star with the Red Dogs, where she would outperform her husband, Mike, both on the pitch and at the bar after. Though her illness progressed and robbed her of an inevitable professional softball contract, she seamlessly transitioned to the unruly “soccer mom” on the sidelines of her children’s sporting events. As such, she was known and loved by many (and perhaps feared by some) as “Jimmy’s Mom”, “Jackie’s Mom”, or “Mrs. Bader”. As an avid sports fan, she attended nearly every sporting event of her children and certainly made her presence, and dissenting opinion, known whenever there was a controversial play or call by the referee. 

Above all, Beth enjoyed spending quality time with her family and socializing with friends. Her favorite place was Bethany Beach, where her family vacationed once a year. In true beach bum fashion, she only had one rule: head to the beach at sunrise (or whatever time she could wake up) with a full cooler and leave at sunset with an empty cooler. 

Though no single word could ever describe Beth, these are a few that have been shared by friends and family following her passing: Warm, Strong, Amazing, Bold, Confident, Vivacious, Spunky, and One of a kind. She was a truly passionate and fiery woman that brought zest to our lives. She will be dearly missed. 

Beth’s children express their deepest gratitude and appreciation to their father, Mike, for his years of dedication, strength, patience, and caregiving to their mother. Even in the later stages of her illness, she remained strong, as her and Mike navigated these challenges together. They remained a team and even maintained their playful banter and self-deprecating humor throughout the most difficult of circumstances. 

Beth is preceded in death by her parents, Edmund and Frances Mester, and her brother, E. Clark Mester Jr. Beth is survived by her loving husband, Mike; her sisters, Patty Haupt and Susan Mester; and her children, Jimmy Bader and Jackie Bader. 

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Beth’s life on Saturday November 2, 2024, from 2 to 4pm at Kalas Funeral Home in Oxon Hill, Maryland. Beth was never one for formalities so please leave your tuxes at home and dress comfortably. 

In lieu of flowers, consider donating to the Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation or Breast Cancer Research Foundation. One of the best ways to honor Beth’s life is to plant a tree, oak trees were her favorite. As an alternative, consider planting tulip bulbs, her favorite flowers, in your home gardens.


Mary Ann Meyer, 64, passed away on October 23, 2024 in Edgewater, MD. Born on December 5, 1959, Mary dedicated her life to others, both through her profession and personal passions.

Mary pursued a degree in Nursing from the University of Maryland, which paved the way for her lifelong commitment to care. Her career was marked by her roles as a Visiting Nurse and her many years of service in the Peace Corps.

Mary's love for reading and her deep appreciation for history were only matched by her enjoyment of the seashore. She enjoyed participating in her book club and took great pleasure in needlework, creating beautiful pieces that reflected her meticulous and artistic nature.

A beloved sister and aunt, Mary is survived by her sister, Patricia Meyer Pittarelli, and her niece and nephews, Maria Helena, George Joseph, and Paul Ernest Pittarelli. She was preceded in death by her parents, Martha and Jesse Meyer.

Mary's life was a testament to her kindness, generosity, and the profound impact she had on those around her. Her legacy of love and service will be cherished and remembered by all who knew her.

Dr. Steve (Eustáthios) Abramedis of Annapolis, MD, age 95, peacefully passed away on Monday, October 21, just one day shy of his 96th birthday. Always dedicated to the field of medicine, he did not start a family of his own, but lovingly delivered babies for many years as a partner in the group which became Annapolis OB/GYN.  He was known for his astute diagnostic skills (prior to Ultrasound, etc.) and was honored to be published in the American Journal of Medicine for diagnosing an ectopic pregnancy that saved a life.  Dr. Abramedis was passionately indiscriminate in his service to the Annapolis region’s underprivileged, insuring they received the same exceptional gynecological care as anyone in the community. 
Dr. Abramedis was devoted to his faith, regularly attending services at Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church where he helped in many capacities, including parish council president.  
Born in Washington, DC, but always directly connected to Annapolis, he was the only child of the late John and Theresa Abramedis. Teresa’s sister was Frosso (Efrosini) Bounelis, the first president of the Annapolis Philoptochos. During the Great Depression his family left the area for restaurant work with Theresa’s brother, Chris Diamondidis, in Clifton Forge, VA, where Steve graduated high school. He attended nearby Virginia Military Institute and entered the Army which sponsored his medical training at Virginia Commonwealth University.  After serving honorably in the Korean War, Dr. Abramedis was discharged as a Captain. 
Wanting to get back to his roots, he returned to Annapolis where he established his career, and looked after family who fondly called him Stathi. Before complete retirement, he served the underprivileged, caring for those in need at the Anne Arundel County Health Dept.  
Funeral Service will be held at Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 2747 Riva Rd., Annapolis, MD 21401 on Monday, October 28 at 11 am. Anna H. McLean died peacefully at home in Oxon Hill, MD, on October 21. She was born Anna Jane Hess in Philadelphia, PA, on Oct 4, 1927. Her father Frederick Grant Hess worked as a chemist in the petroleum industry, and her mother Mabel Berg Hess was a teacher. She has one younger sister, Mary Ellen Meyn, who survives. They lived in New Jersey suburbs of Philadelphia except for a couple years during the Depression, when they moved to the Berg family farm in Indian Head, PA. The Hesses also retired there.

During WWII, Anna worked in a factory, crimping and soldering, but didn’t know what she was making as it was a military secret. She got a BS in Chemistry in 1948 from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College). She went to college on a football scholarship, which they gave to her because all the men were away in the war, and she played on their tennis team.

After graduation she moved to Washington, DC, for a job at the Bureau of Standards. She attended the Mount Vernon Place Methodist Church, where she met her husband Edgar Alexander McLean when they were cast in a play together. They married on Dec 29, 1951 and moved to Forest Heights, followed by Oxon Hill, MD, where they raised 5 children: Susan Kay McLean (John Finamore), a retired English professor who taught at Southwest Minnesota State University; Sandra Marie (Frank) Jablonski, a retired lawyer who worked in the Navy JAG corps, the National Archives and the Dept of Education; William Alexander McLean, a retired music teacher, who worked in West Virginia and Florida; Frederick Miller McLean (Laura Patton), a radiologist in Knoxville, TN, and Mary Anne McLean (Darren Newman), a research physicist at the University of Cambridge in England. Anna has 3 grandchildren: Alexander McLean (Megan Butler), Emily McLean (Tyler Crown), and Derek Jablonski.

Anna was a Ruby Life Master at bridge and directed a weekly game in Camp Springs, MD, for many years. She was also keen on gardening, baking, playing piano, and playing and watching sports. She was on the board of the Oxon Hill Recreation Club and the River Ridge Recreation Council and led a local Girl Scout troop. She was a kind and generous person and will be much missed.



Brandon James Embrey, of Cambridge, Md., died suddenly in an automobile accident on Sunday, October 20, 2024. He was 24-years old. 

Brandon attended Mayo Elementary School, Central Middle School, and South River High School. After earning his high school degree, Brandon became a jack- of-all-trades in various careers. Most recently Brandon was an assistant operations manager for Verizon Wireless Zone in Easton, Md.

Brandon embraced life, loved children and animals, idolized his family, and worshipped God. He cherished time with family and friends and enjoyed online video gaming and NFL football. Brandon was a standout multisport athlete excelling in baseball, basketball, soccer, and football but had a special love and talent for lacrosse. Recently, Brandon enjoyed following his nephews’ high school lacrosse and football games.

He is a past member of Chesapeake Christian Fellowship in Davidsonville, Md. and current member of the First Assembly of God church in Alexandria, Va. 

He is survived by his parents Debra Burns (David) and Jeff Embrey (Socorro); siblings Jennifer Metz (Phil), Craig Shanahan (Liz), Christina Rafiq (John), Jahntiel Puerta, Selynne Puerta, and Adrienne Burns; uncle and aunts James Embrey, Jr. (“Luette”), Vonnie Embrey (Cheryl), Lawrence “Bill” Embrey (Jane), Val Embrey (Stephanie), Vicki Creutzer (Christian), Jodi Grahne (Mark), Joan Shores (Rick), Mark Richardson, and Diana Gleysteen (Dirk). He enjoyed a special relationship with his fraternal grandmother Doris “Dodi” Embrey. Brandon adored children and spoiled his many nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

Brandon is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents John and Diana Richardson; uncles Ric and Damian Richardson; and his fraternal grandfather James “Bud” Embrey.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, Md on Thursday, October 31, 2024.  Visitation is from 2:00-4:00pm with a religious ceremony officiated by Lead Pastor Wes Johnson of First Assembly of God church from 4:00-5:00pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, you can honor Brandon’s life by donating to the Dorchester County Humane Society. 


Theresa J. DeVaughn
May 27, 1925 -October 19, 2024

On the evening of October 19, 2024 our colorful, loving, Mom and Grandma, Theresa, passed away surrounded by her family and friends.  
 
Theresa was feisty, right up to the end, always ready to offer advice, solicited or not.  She was born May 27, 1925, in Baltimore, Maryland to John and Armoza Jameson. She grew up with her brother and sister and spent time living with her grandmother Marie Elise Pomerleau in Massachusetts.

Theresa attended Sacred Heart in Lawrence, Massachusetts, through 8th grade before attending Notre Dame Academy High School in Washington, D.C.  During the difficult times on the home front of WW2, Theresa left Notre Dame Academy in the 11th grade to go to work in order to help support the family. At the same time, she enrolled in night school at McKinley Tech in Washington, D.C., earning her diploma.  She later went to work at the U.S. War Department Finance Office and the Veterans Administration. She did what she had to do for her family in the face of difficulty and adversity.

Theresa met the love of her life, George F. DeVaughn, earlier in her life. His mother was a nanny for her sister, Jackie, and a connection was made.  Many years later, she married George on March 2, 1946, in St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Washington, D.C. after he returned from WW2 as a B-17 waist gunner in the European Theater.  She has been known to say, “I didn’t really like him before he went to war, but he came back a different man.”  Soon thereafter, a legacy of DeVaughns came rolling in, as did the chaos, diapers, and unending dishes in their small College Park home. At George’s passing, they were married for 58 years.

Theresa was a devout and active member of the Catholic Church, always ready to ask if you had been to mass or confession. She was also very proud of her French-Canadian heritage and using the French language, especially in prayers. 
  
Theresa loved celebrating the holidays and packing the family into their small home.  She enjoyed baking personal specialty cakes for the family, sending greeting cards, and going on camping and boating trips with family.  Throughout the years, she kept in touch with her sorority chapter, Zeta Epsilon-Beta, that she joined in high school, keeping long-time friendships kindled. It is a well-known fact that Theresa loved to dance.  At the drop of a hat, if anything so much as chopsticks was playing, she would jump up and start dancing.  It’s guaranteed she had Saint Peter doing the twist when she showed up at the Pearly Gates. 

Once again, the call to duty rang when Theresa again returned to work late in life at Poole’s Warehouse after George’s 3rd heart attack, again doing what she had to do to care for her family. It is a difficult thing for a mother to do, yet she did it.

With the “herd” out of the house, she and George moved to Rehoboth, Delaware, near the beach to retire.  The place became a destination that the herd returned to use as a base camp.  It made her happy. 

Recently asked, “what is your life’s best accomplishment?” she replied, “My kids; my mother worked when I was little and I wanted to be a stay at home mom.”
Theresa is preceded in death by her husband George F. DeVaughn, parents John and Armoza Jameson, sister, Jackie Barnes, brother, John “Ray” Jameson, and her son, Michael DeVaughn.  She is survived by her children Elaine Leclercq (Roger), Steve DeVaughn (Sharon), Timothy DeVaughn, Mark DeVaughn, Diana Skipworth (Larry), Lisa D. Bertoldi (Raymond), Rich DeVaughn, Daughter-in-law, Julie Santos (Israel), 13 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. 
 
The Rite of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, October 24, 2024, at 11 am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 515 Loch Haven Rd., Edgewater, Maryland.  Interment – Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland 20906.



John R. “Bob” Kelly

Bob Kelly (88) of Annapolis went to be with his Savior Jesus Christ on October 19, 2024. He was surrounded by his family as they reminisced about his life. Bob was born and raised in Washington D.C. and attended Tech High School and Northwestern High School.  He started bagging groceries at Giant Food and worked his way up to Director of Security. 

After his career at Giant, he was a very successful car salesman at Bert Spriggs in Annapolis.  Bob was loved and respected by his fellow employees.  He served our country in the Coast Guard, was a proud member of AA for 43 years, was for many years a faithful member at his local Catholic Church, and presently attended Bay Area Community Church. Bob created Kellyville (a very large hand-painted village complete with a running train), collected all things Norman Rockwell, and loved old movies (especially “It’s a Wonderful Life”). He was proud of his Irish heritage and cherished his faith in God.

Bob loved his family deeply and sacrificially. He and his wife of 51 years, Joanne, raised five children: Tammy Croyle (Steve) of Bowie, Terry Timme (Bill) of Pasadena, Tom Kelly (Patrice) of Silver Spring, Leanne Lindsay(Larry is deceased) of Wendell, NC, and Cathy Brock (John) of Baltimore.  They were blessed with 12 grandchildren John (Alex) Croyle, Jimmy (Jenn) Croyle, Kyle (Taylor) Timme, Katie (Zach) Shoemaker, Chris (Gillian) Chirigos, Deanna Chirigos, Caroline Kelly, Corrie Slagle (Jacob), Jamie Lindsay, Trey Lindsay, Rachel Brock, and Nathan Brock. Bob and Joanne were also blessed with six great-grandchildren.  He is preceded in death by his late wife Virginia Kelly and their son Timothy.  

The children of Bob Kelly express their love and gratitude to their mother for her years of dedication, strength, patience, and caregiving to their father.

On Saturday, October 19, 2024 Amor Gambalan Paraoan of Fort Washington, MD passed away peacefully and was surrounded by his loved ones. Amor was born on January 8, 1966 to the late Romeo and Nieves Paraoan; survived by his wife Ofelia Sarian Paraoan and his two children Justin S. Paraoan and Aileen P. Miller (Jeff). He was the second to the eldest of five beloved siblings, Romeo G. Paraoan (Teresa), Albert G. Paraoan (Lilet), late Joel G. Paraoan (Helen) and Maria P. French (JC).

Amor was a dedicated and devoted husband, father and brother. He enjoyed and cherished spending time with his family, siblings and friends. He will forever be remembered for his words of encouragement, generosity, humor, love and strong fighting spirit. He was loved by his family and close friends for his caring heart and warm embrace he gave to others.

Robert M. Gaia, Jr. “Bob”, 72, a resident of Kent Island, MD for three years and previously of Dover, PA, died on Friday, October 18 at his home. Born on August 19, 1952, in Greensburg, PA to the late Anne and Robert Gaia, Sr., Bob had a lengthy career as an electrician and business owner. He spent more than twenty-five years at Gettysburg Farm campground in Pennsylvania where he enjoyed spending time with his many friends and family. Bob was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and enjoyed RC cars and being with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Beth Gaia; his daughter, Katie (Joseph) Herring of Kent Island, MD; his siblings, Christine Gaia Hopper of Glen Burnie, MD, and Tim Gaia of Kent Island, MD and his grandsons, Tyler and JoJo Herring. A celebration of Bob’s life will be announced in the near future.

Kay Arnold Catlin, 82, of Annapolis, died peacefully on the evening of Friday, October 18, 2024. She passed at home with dignity and grace after a long battle with skin cancer. She was surrounded by her children and grandchildren while she crossed into the gates of Heaven.

Kay was born to the late Silas Keith and Francis Arnold in Bedford, Virginia, on February 26, 1942. She was known by most as Nee Nee.

Kay attended public school and graduated from Bladensburg High School in 1960. She then enrolled in Lara Francs School of Cosmetology in Lanham, Maryland, and graduated in 3 ½ years. After graduating from beauty school in 1970, Kay landed a teaching job at Hollywood Beauty School, located in College Park, Maryland. This is where she met the love of her life, Carl Catlin. After a long courtship, they were married on April 22, 1984, and lived in the Annapolis area for 45 years.

Kay thought very progressively about business and fashion; she was ahead of her time as a pioneer in the beauty industry. Her dream was to become a business owner and to open more cosmetology schools.

In a short period of time, Kay and Carl bought Hollywood Beauty School thus capturing those dreams. Today, they are known as Hair Academy Inc. and Hair Academy II. Kay continued to hold a current Cosmetology license.

For many years, she attended Riva Trace Baptist Church in Annapolis and then in Davidsonville. Over the last year and a half, Kay faithfully watched Dennis preach from her living room every Sunday via TV streaming.

Nee Nee was a great cook for the five dishes she knew. The homemade chocolate pie was always a crowd favorite, so good that it ruined any other attempt at a chocolate pie from anywhere else.

She found joy in landscaping her yard.  In the spring, she would plant tulips and pansies, and throughout the summer, she added and added until, by Christmas, it looked like a national park Filled with decorations, ornaments, and lights everywhere.  It became a yearly tradition- even for distant neighbors as they would drive up and down her driveway admiring in awe at the Christmas beauty around the yard.  The visitors would leave thank you notes, small gifts, or cookies. Christmas was always a big deal for her…from the outside to the inside- she put a special loving touch on everything. The inside of her house was decorated as beautiful as the outside. She loved to be creative and change the theme- from elegant silver and blue to your classic Santa red and green.  

Kay traveled the world but quickly realized that the river sunsets from her own back deck are something out of a storybook. She took great pleasure in entertaining at her home, meticulously ensuring that every last detail was as perfect as those sunsets.  

Kay found bowling later in life.  She not only loved the sport but met some great friends as well. It became a weekly Monday staple.

In addition to her parents, Kay was preceded by her husband, Carl Catlin. She is survived by her children, Kevin and April, one brother, Larry, and her grandchildren, Travis, Macy and Keith.
