Joseph Russell “Russ” Clay, Jr., 90, a resident of Davidsonville, MD and previously of Willingboro, NJ, and Buccaneer Estates, North Ft. Meyers FL, passed away on Thursday, October 17, 2024.  He was surrounded by family.  Born on August 9, 1934 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Joseph R. Clay, Sr. and Florence (Oldenburgh) Clay. 

He attended classes at LaSalle University in Philadelphia before entering the automotive industry at Reedman Corporation in Langhorne, PA.  After moving to Florida, he worked at Magnolia Landing Golf Course.
Russ served his country in the US Army from 1954 until being honorably discharged in 1956.  

He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and was a longtime faithful   member of Corpus Christi Church in Willingboro, NJ where he was an usher and served as chairman of the church’s annual carnival.  He was fan of all sports, especially golf and was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies.  He loved spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren and at his backyard koi pond. He participated in the Knights of Columbus golf league and various softball leagues. He was an active participant in the Buccaneer Estates community activities and events.

Russ is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Janet Richman Clay; his daughters, Linda (Gene) O’Hara of Virginia Beach, VA, Debra (Sean) Shapert of Davidsonville and Patricia (Mark) Holmes of Salisbury, MD; grandchildren Conor (Stephanie) O’Hara, Joseph (Arooj) Bonsall, Liam Holmes, Jared Shapert, Amanda (Richard) Long, Caitlin (Chad) Lyall and Colleen O’Hara; five great grandchildren; and he was a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Regina Giltinan.

A Memorial Mass will be offered on Saturday, November 23 at 11 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 W. Central Avenue, Davidsonville. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of George "Sonny" Tyler, Jr., a beloved member of the Eastport community, on October 15, 2024, at the age of 84. Born on September 1, 1940, George was a kind and gentle soul who touched the lives of all who knew him. He was a retired Lieutenant from the Annapolis Fire Department. He was known for his great sense of humor and his love for the water, spending countless hours on the Chesapeake Bay. George will be remembered for his generosity, wisdom, and unwavering optimism. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness and compassion that will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He is survived by one son, John Tyler (Clarissa); one daughter, Debra Rosati (Harry); Sonny's partner in life, Sandra Brashears and her two children and granddaughter Terri, Robin and Heather; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Billy), Heather (Daniel), Natalie, Kaitlyn and Emily; and two great grandchildren, Brandon and Danielle. George will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

On October 14, 2024, Lois McGovern, affectionately known as Lily, passed away in Annapolis, MD. Born in Pottstown, PA, she often fondly reminded others that her hometown was the home of Yuengling Brewery. Lily was a beloved daughter in a large Irish Catholic family, celebrated for her unique birthday dessert of raisin pie.

A dedicated and determined student, Lily earned her nursing degree from Duquesne University, followed by her Master's in Nursing. Her career was marked by her commitment to helping others, including her service as a hospital nurse in the Air Force. She later became the Health Care Administrator for various businesses and served as the Chief Administrator of Nursing at St. Francis in Trenton, NJ.

After retiring, Lily embraced her passion for camping and boating, exploring the Chesapeake Bay and taking over 50 cruises with friends and family. Her love for travel and the outdoors was matched only by her enthusiasm for community involvement; she volunteered at the Annapolis Senior Activity Center and worked with the non-profit organization Partners in Care in Pasadena, MD.

An avid supporter of the arts, Lily attended numerous performances at the Kennedy Center and local concerts. She was also a devoted animal lover, rescuing several cats, with her beloved Adele being closest to her heart.

Lily was an active member of several organizations, including the Ladies of the Knights of Columbus, the Republican Women of Anne Arundel County, and the First Thursday Club. She cherished a good book, particularly historical novels and mysteries, and enjoyed sharing laughter with friends during happy hours.

As we remember Lily, let us honor her legacy by finding joy in the little things, being generous with our time and hearts, and striving to make the world a better place through small acts of kindness.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, October 24th at 11:00 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 West Central Avenue, Davidsonville, MD 21035. For those unable to attend, the Mass will be live-streamed on YouTube via holyfamilychurch.com.

Edward Cecil Moore, Jr. was born May 11, 1944, in Georgetown, Kent County, Maryland to the late Edward C. and Freda Perry Moore. Almighty God in his infinite wisdom, quietly called Edward home to rest from his labor on October 13, 2024.

Edward Moore, known as “Joe”, grew up in Alexandria, VA and Washington, DC where his parents settled with he and his siblings. He was the second of six children.


Joe was an active person from childhood through his high school years. Being active is who he was, and that energy remained with him throughout his life. He attended Stuart Elementary School in Alexandria, VA, Garnet Patterson Junior High School and graduated from McKinley Tech High School. Joe kept busy throughout his high school years with such activities as JROTC Cadet, basketball and roller skating (like a pro) at the infamous Kalorama Road Skating Rink and was overall a popular student.

After high school, Joe went straight into the work force, employed by the Hecht Company, Safeway, Trinity College and Providence Hospital. As a young man, he worked hard and possessed a good work ethic. Joe married his wife of 61 years, Theresa E. Dyson on February 22, 1963. He was a proud father of three daughters and a son. Joe eventually obtained a job with the federal government at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing where he worked his way up to Supervisor of the Postage Stamp Vault and retired after 45 plus years. He was well known, respected and appreciated by his colleagues and staff. He touched many lives and was always there providing a listening ear and/or lending a helping hand.

Joe enjoyed listening to various types of music, dancing, grilling, traveling with family or friends and just having a good time experiencing life. A self-proclaimed grill master, the entire neighborhood knew when he was grilling which he did year-round. His infamous ribs, loved by everyone, were dubbed, “often imitated, but NEVER duplicated!” He took great pleasure in entertaining; gathering together no matter the occasion to let the good times roll. He also loved hand dancing. He and Theresa would cut a rug, dancing everybody off the floor, leaving them to watch and admire their dance moves. Joe enjoyed participating in social settings and belonged to a few clubs: THE Motorcycle Club, The Kronecker’s Social Club and the Metropolitan Whist and Pinochle Club. Playing bid whist was his favorite past time. He and his partner, Tim Johnson, was THE team to try and beat at card parties throughout the DMV. They traveled up and down the east coast winning many Bid Whist Tournaments…BOSTON, RISE &amp; FLY…NEXT! He was also a devoted fan of the Redskins (Commanders) Football Team and always rooted for them whenever they were playing. Win or lose, game day or not he was a diehard representing the team by often wearing jerseys. And, if you were a fan of Washington’s arch rival, the Dallas Cowboys, he talked plenty trash and got it in return all in good spirit for the love of the game.

In short, Joe was a Stacy Adams, Dobb wearing, “Yak” drinking, old school man who enjoyed life to the fullest and did it his way. His motto was: NO GUTS, NO GLORY!!

Joe was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Freda Moore, sisters Edna (Cissie) and Annette, brother Harold and nephew Harold, Jr. (“Little Harold”). He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Theresa, children Terry, Edna, Dawn, Ed (Joe), grandson Tyler, granddaughters Morgan and Madison, sisters Joyce and Robin, nephews Bryan and Brandon, niece Christen, great niece Paityn, great nephew Orion and a host of cousins, relatives and many friends.

Herbert “Bert” G. Bigelow, 84, of Edgewater, MD and previously of Grasonville, MD passed away on October 12, 2024. Born on February 22, 1940 in La Crosse, WI to the late Marjorie and Thomas Bigelow, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Northern Iowa before establishing his career at the U.S. Department of Agriculture as the Director of Human Resources, Food Safety Inspection Service.
A proud veteran, Bert honorably served our country as a member of the United States Marine Corps. He was a parishioner at Holy Family Catholic Church, and a member of The Golf Club at South River and the American Legion. He enjoyed boating, golfing, and landscaping. 
Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. Bert described his wife Carolyn as his “very best friend”. He considered her his confidant, golf partner, travel companion, and advisor. They truly enjoyed their years together. He was very proud of the beautiful young lady his daughter Stacie became. He felt that Stacie always knew she could count on him for whatever she needed. His grandchildren, Madison and Dalton were the light of his life.  They were his pride and joy. He often bragged about their accomplishments and was so very proud of them.
Bert is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Carolyn Bigelow; his daughter, Stacie Fiore of Edgewater, MD; his siblings, Thomas (Yolanda) Bigelow of Mountain Grove, MO, Ann (Bob) White of Iowa Falls, IA, and Bea Strope of Appleton, WI; and his beloved grandchildren, Dalton Cain of Clearwater, FL and Madison Cain of Chicago, IL. Additionally, he is survived by a loving extended family in Maryland and Iowa.

The Honorable Dennis Clifton Donaldson Sr., affectionately known as "Denny," passed away peacefully in Melbourne, Florida, on October 11, 2024, at the age of 86. Born on June 9, 1938, in Washington, D.C., Denny lived a life dedicated to service, family, and community.

Denny’s professional journey began as a mailer for the International Typographical Union, followed by U.S. Air Force 1960 – 1966.  In 1963, he joined the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, D.C. until his retirement in 1973. His commitment to public service continued as he became Recreational Director for District Heights and later represented Prince George’s County in the Maryland House of Delegates from 1978 - 1990. His career further evolved as he held the position of Speaker Pro Tem under Speaker Clay Mitchell. He was later appointed Special Assistant to Governor William Donald Schaefer and as a political consultant and lobbyist, influencing policies and campaigns with Donaldson Consultants. 

He was a loving husband to his beloved wife, Geraldine (Gerri) Donaldson, with whom he shared 62 years of marriage. Together, they built a family rooted in love, raising three children: Patti Donaldson (Debbie), Dennis “Cliff” Donaldson (Danielle), and Pete Donaldson. His family continued to grow with the addition of seven grandchildren—Lynnette Melotti (Tony), Tiffany Cook (Christopher), Robby Blake, Taylor Donaldson, Kiersten Begin (Alec), Marcus Fogle, Jonah Fogle—and two great-grandchildren, Dylan King and Phoebe Begin.


Outside of his professional accomplishments, Denny held a steadfast passion for coaching, dedicating 42 years to mentoring young athletes in Maryland. His influence spanned across various sporting levels, from youth leagues to collegiate teams—including baseball at the University of Maryland, Prince George's County Community College, Chesapeake Community College, and Bowie University, as well as football at Salisbury University. He cherished the opportunity to coach all three of his children throughout their youth years, along with many of their friends, leaving a lasting impact on countless young athletes.

Denny’s life was framed by altruism, fostering community spirit through his tireless engagement in sports, public service, and beyond. Although preceded in death by his parents, Charles (Pete) and Margaret Donaldson, and his brother, Charles (Buddy) and Joyce Donaldson, Denny’s legacy of love, dedication, and perseverance endures in the hearts of his loved ones and all who were fortunate to know him.

A funeral service will be held at Davis Seawinds Funeral Home in Melbourne, Florida, on October 21, 2024 from 9:00 to 11:00 am. Friends and family are invited to gather and honor a monumental life enriched by love, leadership and an unwavering commitment to community service. The military burial and service will be in his home state of Maryland at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville, MD on Friday, October 25 at 1:00 pm.

Denny’s absence is deeply felt, yet his memory will forever serve as a beacon of kindness, strength, and dedication. His remarkable life remains an inspiration to all who knew him. His memory will live in all of us forever.

Jules R. Cornet, 86, a 67- year resident of Severn, MD, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2024 at the Rebecca Fortney Inpatient Care Center in Pasadena, MD. He was born on June 20, 1938, in Point Marion, PA to the late Jules D. Cornet and Sarah Jenkins.

Jules graduated high school and earned a Machining Certificate from Johns Hopkins University. He proudly served in the Air Force National Guard and spent his career working at Koppers Company, Machined Parts Service and H&H Machine Service. A dedicated Mason, Jules was known for his commitment to service and community.

In his personal life, Jules was passionate about hot rods and custom cars, a devoted fan of the Baltimore Ravens and enjoyed indulging in Maryland blue crabs. He loved boating and cherished watching his grandsons grow.

In addition to his parents, Jules was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 32 years, Helga C. Cornet.

He is survived by his daughter, Heide Cornet Hostelley of Severn, MD and her husband, William V. Hostelley, III, as well as two grandsons, Brock and Brent Hostelley.

John Edward Sheehy was born in Washington, DC on 27 April 1958 to the late Mary Cecilia Sheehy and Donald Joseph Sheehy and passed on 10 October 2024 from an illness. John grew up in Washington DC and Bethesda. After graduating from Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, Maryland, John attended the University of Maryland College Park. 

John had always been called to service and he enthusiastically answered that call by joining the United States Coast Guard. John’s favorite duty station was in Kodiak, Alaska. 

John was awarded two commendations for military conduct and lifesaving decision-making while coordinating the response to two maritime disasters. One was a cruise ship on ﬁre off the coast of Alaska. The other was a ﬁshing vessel taking on water off the coast of New Zealand. John refused to be relieved of his duty until all passengers and crew were safe. 

John’s devotion to service was only eclipsed by his love and devotion to his family. John married the love of his life, Christine Jones Sheehy, on 8 September 2001. Together they had two children. John always shared the pride he had of Christine as a mother and her dedication to their family. He could often be heard talking about Ella‘s academic and dance prowess. Similarly, John always talked about Andrew hitting long balls in baseball and what an amazing man he was becoming. 

John was the kind of family member or friend that was only a phone call away. He was happy to drive you to the airport at 4 AM or have those eight-minute calls about life’s trials and tribulations. John was like an M&M. He did have a hard exterior, but the inside was sweet and caring. John will be missed by all of those who have known him. 

John was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Cecilia and Donald Joseph Sheehy; his brothers, Kimberly Michael and Andrew Dominic and his father-in-law, Tom Jones. 

John is survived by his wife of 23 years, Christine; his daughter, Ella and his son, Andrew. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Dolores Jones; his aunt, Peggy Price and his brothers, Patrick (Nicole), Thaddeus and Terence (Tracey Lynn); ten nieces and nephews, and six great nieces and nephews. John’s quick wit and soft heart will be missed by all. 

A Memorial Mass will be offered on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at 11 am at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 W. Central Avenue, Davidsonville,  MD. A reception will follow with details to come. 


It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dominic F. Cossa, a distinguished opera singer, and beloved professor, who left us on Sunday, October 6, 2024. Dominic’s illustrious singing career spanned over four decades, during which he graced the stages of the New York City and Metropolitan Opera houses, as well as numerous prestigious venues around the world.

His powerful voice and captivating performances earned Dominic acclaim and admiration from audiences and critics alike. His dedication to the art of opera was not only evident in his performances but also in his commitment to nurturing the next generation of opera artists as a Professor of Music at the University of Maryland. His students remember him as an inspiring mentor who shared his passion and expertise with generosity and warmth.

Dominic is survived by his loving wife, Jan; his son, Gian, and his wife Susie, his daughter, Francine, and her husband, Roberto; his cherished grandchildren, Heather and her husband, Joe, Lynsey, and James and his wife, Kari; and his adored great-grandchildren, Gianni, Gia, Leo, Willa, and Wolf.

His legacy will live on through his family, students, colleagues, and the countless lives he touched with his music. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

There will be a Celebration of Life mass at St. John Neumann’s Church on November 14, 2024, at 10:30 AM, located at 620 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD 21401. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Dominic Cossa Scholarship Fund supporting students in the Maryland Opera Studio at the University of Maryland, in honor of Dominic’s lifelong dedication to the arts.

Father Bruce (Aquinas) Williams, O.P., a priest of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) died late on Sunday, October 6, 2024 after a long illness with Parkinson’s disease. He was 85 years old. He was born on January 8, 1939, in Woodside (Queens), NY, the son of Alfred Eugene Williams and Sylvia (neé Foster) Williams. He became a Roman Catholic during high school, being baptized on April 29, 1955, at St. Mary’s Church in Woodside.

After earning a B.A in history and an M.A in Philosophy at St. John’s University, he entered the Dominican novitiate in 1961 at St. Joseph Priory in Somerset, OH, where he received the religious name Aquinas. Following years of academic study and spiritual formation, he was ordained to the priesthood at St. Dominic’s Church in Washington, DC on June 8, 1967.

His priestly work was both academic and pastoral. He taught philosophy and theology at various institutions, including St. John’s University and The Angelicum in Rome; served as pastor at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Valhalla, NY; and devoted time and effort to preaching retreats, writing, and giving spiritual direction.

The debilitating effects of Parkinson’s disease forced him to retire from active ministry, though he remained in communication with family and a wide circle of friends. He lived with his Dominican community at St. Dominic Priory in Washington, DC for as long as possible until his care requirements necessitated a move to Sacred Heart Home in Hyattsville, MD. The Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate and the staff at Sacred Heart Home provided exemplary care.

Father Bruce Williams is survived by his cousin Suzanne (Ralph) Boehm, longtime friend Marc Pickerington, and the members of his Dominican community. Visitation is at St. Dominic Church in Washington, DC on Friday, October 11 beginning at 7 pm and again on Saturday, October 12 beginning at 10 am. The Funeral Mass is on Saturday, October 12 at 10:30 am. Interment immediately follows in the Dominican section at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at 10:45 am at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery, 1122 Sunrise Beach Road, Crownsville, MD 21032

Michael Hugo Barbagallo Sr. passed away unexpectedly on Friday, October 4, 2024, at the age of 86.

A lifelong resident of Maryland, Michael was a spacecraft payload engineer, contributing his expertise to NASA and the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. Throughout his esteemed career, he played pivotal roles in several landmark spacecraft programs, including:

Michael's legacy extends far beyond his professional accomplishments. He will also be deeply missed by his grandchildren Melissa, Carrie, Ashley, Conner, Joshua, Emily, Dominic, and Thomas; his great-grandson, Rory Barbagallo-Callahan; his brother, Dominic; and his sisters, Nancy Tolzman, Frances Barbagallo, and Joan Parker. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dominic and Frances Barbagallo.

Michael’s devotion to his family was unwavering, and he cherished his roles as a father and grandfather. An avid outdoorsman, he found joy in hunting, fishing, and tackling hands-on projects. Michael was known as a "Mr. Fix-it," always ready to lend a hand. Whether helping his dear friend Jerry build a cabin in Pennsylvania or assisting his buddy Bob in constructing a home-built airplane, his ingenuity and generosity knew no bounds.

Michael’s love of life, family, and community will be remembered forever. He was a wonderful man who enriched the lives of those who knew him. His spirit will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.

Westley Randolph Wright, born April 7, 1960, was called home to our Lord on Thursday, October 4, 2024, after a fourteen-year battle with cancer.

Westley was born at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC to the late John Delmas (JD) and Wilanda Ray (Pat) Wright. He spent his childhood in Washington, DC and Prince Georges County, Maryland. He was raised in the Catholic Faith and attended St. Gabriel Elementary School and St. Mary’s Catholic School in Landover Hills. A proud Purple Eagle, he graduated from the Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC in 1978 and began his collegiate career at Marquette University.

Throughout his youth, Westley was consistently involved in school and community sports and extracurricular activities that enhanced his knowledge of the world, including summer internships at the Naval Surface Warfare Center White Oak in Silver Spring and Kauai, Hawaii.

Westley transferred from Marquette and graduated from Howard University in 1986, earning a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. While at Howard University, he pledged the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and crossed on August 20, 1983, the sole survivor of his pledge line. During high school and college, Westley forged many lasting friendships and built strong relationships with friends he considered to be his brothers and sisters.

Westley began his professional career in the federal government working as a Project Engineer at the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR). Shortly thereafter, he met his wife, Karen Addison. They were married on August 24, 1991, and their union produced two beautiful daughters, Hillary Morgan and Jillian Nicole. Westley and Karen were married for 33 years. Westley loved these three women dearly, and their lives together were the most important aspect of his life. An original “girl dad” he was immensely proud of his daughters' talents and accomplishments.

Westley earned his Master of Business Administration at Marymount University in 1993 while working at NAVAIR. After leaving NAVAIR, he worked at the U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters followed by the Federal Aviation Administration. He worked as a manager, in the Technology Development & Advanced Concepts Division until his death. Westley loved his job and work family. He valued his team’s individual and collective accomplishments and advocated for their career advancement.

Westley enjoyed life! He was a devout Catholic whose deep faith was evident in every aspect of it. A passionate sports fan, he particularly loved football, golf, and basketball. He was OBSESSED with LSU football and attended a few games while his youngest daughter, Jillian attended college there. He loved to spend time surrounded by family and friends. Friendships were the bedrock of his being, and he treated each relationship in a special way. The words that best describe his life are faith, family, and friends.

Westley is predeceased by his parents, JD and Pat Wright. He is survived by his wife, Karen Wright of Mitchellville, Maryland; daughters, Hillary (Tylesa) of Washington, DC and Jillian of Brooklyn, New York; brother, Jeffrey (Lenka) Wright of Felton, Delaware; aunts, Violet Ray Jamison and Shirley McDonald; father- and mother-in-law, Wilbur and Aurella; brother-in-law, Brian; nieces, Bernitta, Janal, Amber, and Taylore; as well as many loving cousins and great-nephews.

A wake will be held at Kalas Funeral Home (6160 Oxon Hill Road Oxon Hill, MD 20745) on October 21 from 6-8 PM. At 7 PM, there will be a ceremony by Westley's fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma, Inc.

On October 22, a viewing will be held from 10 AM followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church: 2020 St Josephs Dr, Upper Marlboro, MD 20774. Joseph William Rahall III, 76, passed away on Thursday Oct 3, 2024 surrounded by his family at his home.  Born January 2, 1948 in Boston, Massachusetts to Joseph & Helen Rahall (Brock), Joe was a dearly loved husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

A graduate of Boston Technical High School in 1966, Joe also had a special love for the time he spent at Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire growing up.   With a deep-seated love of country and true patriotic spirit, Joe enlisted in the Air Force during the Vietnam War, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. During this time, Joe married his wife of 55 years Mary Ann Rahall [Drake] on Nov 1, 1969.

After being honorably discharged from the service, Joe studied engineering and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from George Washington University in Washington, DC in 1975.

Joe took his dream Job working for the Department of Defense upon his graduation, continuing his commitment to serve America. His work at NAVSEA focused on the United States Nuclear Submarine Program, specifically the Trident Submarine Program. Joe loved NAVSEA and would call it home for his entire forty-plus year career.

While Joe found fulfillment from his career accomplishments, his greatest joy remained his his family. Joe and Mary were blessed to have two children, daughter Julie Rahall Casalino [Joe] and son Joseph William Rahall IV [Erica]. In recent years, Joe’s passion for family grew from loving father and husband to doting grandfather with the addition of his granddaughter [Lexi] and grandson [Joseph William Rahall V].

Consistent with a life of giving back, Joe was an avid volunteer in his community, especially in Southern Maryland. He donated his time and technical skills in the field of computers and networking to St. Peter’s School in Waldorf and St. Mary’s Ryken High School. He acted as a coach for both Julie and Joe’s Odyssey of the Mind and Destination Imagination teams; and later served as judge at competitions for both organizations.

Joe is survived by his wife, two children, and two grandchildren, a son-in-law and daughter-in-law.

Shirley Ann Owen (Barham), 86, passed peacefully to the Lord on Monday, September 30, 2024, at Brightview Assisted Living in Edgewater, MD.  She was surrounded by her family when she entered the gates of Heaven.

Shirley was born July 16, 1938, in Washington, D.C., to the late Roscoe Holland Barham and Thelma Virginia Barham. The family lived in Arlington, VA, where Shirley attended public schools and graduated from Washington-Lee High School in 1956.

She met Lee T. “Sonny” Owen, the man who would later become the love of her life, at a carnival in Deale, MD when she was just 15 years old.  Shirley worked for the Federal Reserve System for six years after graduating high school.  She and Sonny wed in 1960 in Arlington, VA, and were married for 58 years until his death in 2018. Early in their marriage, they lived in Bladensburg, MD, and moved to Hillsmere Shores in 1962, where they lived in the same house until 2018.

Shirley loved people and had numerous employments, but two especially unique careers. For 25 years, she was a newspaper carrier for the Annapolis Evening Capital, delivering up to 700 papers per day throughout the Hillsmere Shores community. Shirley was known for her dependability and congeniality.  

She was also an Avon representative and was especially proud of having been recognized as an elite member of the Avon Presidents Club. The relationships she developed with her clients over 25 years made it especially difficult for her to retire.  

Shirley was always known as a wonderfully caring and giving person. She was a lifelong member of Eastport United Methodist Church, where she worked tirelessly for many years for the annual Peach Festival. Shirley and Sonny loved gardening and had an award-winning yard in their community.  They also were competitive and passionate bowlers early in their marriage.  Shirley loved to travel with family and friends and took many trips to the mountains of Tennessee, the Amish Country of Pennsylvania, and the beach for the sunshine she loved, among other destinations.  Shirley enjoyed music and dancing and brought fun to every gathering she attended.  Her children were her pride and joy, and she was devoted to her grandchildren.   

Shirley is survived by her children, David (Amanda) Owen of Harwood, MD, and Debbie (Karl) Allen of Lothian, MD, and three grandchildren, Ryan, Karlee Allen, and Nathan Owen. She is also survived by her brother, Roscoe F. (Bud) Barham of South Carolina, and two nephews, Michael J. Barham and S. Douglas Barham of Virginia.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Shirley's life on Thursday, October 17, from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD.  A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 18, at 11:00 am at Chesapeake Christian Fellowship, 377 W. Central Avenue, Davidsonville, MD.  Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery, Annapolis, MD.   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Shirley's name to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 90 Ritchie Highway, Pasadena, MD 21122.

Lorraine Catherine Wright, 92, of Annapolis, died peacefully with dignity and grace on Sunday, September 29, 2024.

She was born to the late William and Mae McLaughlin on February 10, 1932, in Woodbury, NJ. In addition to her parents, Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband, Harry F. Wright, Jr.; her son, Douglas C. Wright; and her brother, William J. McLaughlin, Jr. 
Lorraine and Harry moved from New Jersey to Severna Park, Maryland, in 1964. They lived in Oakleigh Forest for many years, where Lorraine loved her neighbors and enjoyed beautifying the community with her talents in gardening and decorating. They later moved to Bayberry Hill in Crownsville, where Lorraine and Harry loved being surrounded by nature and their views of the Severn River.  More recently, Lorraine lived in Heritage Harbor, Annapolis, and cherished her conversations with neighbors.

Lorraine often spoke of joyful memories growing up with her brother in New Jersey, where they were surrounded by cousins, aunts, and uncles.  Throughout her life, she also loved spending time at the South Jersey Shore in Sea Isle, Wildwood Crest, and Cape May, NJ. A talented artist, Lorraine spent many hours expressing her creativity through china painting, ceramics, and Japanese silk art. 

She is survived by three children: Harry (Linda) Wright, III, of Arnold, MD; Lonni (Phil) Pitis of North Wales, PA; and Gregory (Deborah) Wright of Laurel, MD. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Mark, Scott, and Tyler Pitis; Samantha (Chip) Leigh; Melanie and Alexandria Wright; and four great-grandchildren: Luke Pitis and Reighlyn, Forrest, and Adelaide Leigh.

Friends are invited to celebrate Lorraine’s life on Saturday, October 5, from 11 am to 1 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD. Joseph Floyd Hedgman aka “Joe” was born to Josephine Martin and Louis Hedgman on July 27, 1953 in Washington, DC, where he also attended DC public schools. When he was ten years old, his mother bought him a wagon. He didn’t use it to play with. But instead, helped the people in his community by transporting their bags and groceries to their home. Of course, he charged a small fee.

Joe became an auto mechanic worker after watching his brother, Louis, fix cars. Bowling also became another passion of his when Louis introduced him to the game. He loved it so much he joined a few leagues. He attended Universal Technical Institute where he obtained his certification to become a mechanic, which led to his thirty plus years at Pep Boys Auto.

Joe enjoyed life by watching baseball, going to car shows, bowling with family and friends, and most of all, attending the Gun Expose` which inspired him to create his own ammunition.

Joe met and fell in love with the love of his life, Bethseine aka “Bae”, in 1997 whom he later married in 1999. He later dedicated his life to Christ and was baptized on March 31, 2011. Joe has a daughter, Katrina Brown, who became a bonus daughter to Bae.


Joseph is preceded in death by both parents, his sister, Diane Hedgman, and brother, Louis Hedgman Jr. He is survived by his wife, Bethseine Hedgman; his daughter, Katrina Brown (Roderick); two brothers – Roger Hedgman and Don Peete; two sisters – Patricia McDonald and Rose Thurman (Buck); four grandchildren – Antoine Brown, Tiara Brown, Ebony Brown, and Tiauna Rhyne; 5 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

James "Jimmy" M. Fleshman, 65, a 25-year resident of Annapolis, MD, and previously of Cheverly, MD, died of Leukemia on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at his home.

Jimmy was born June 20, 1959, in Cheverly, MD, to the late Hazel Ida and Donald C. Fleshman, Sr. He graduated from Bladensburg High School and worked in the automotive painting industry for 40 years. Jimmy enjoyed riding his motorcycle with friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Gary Fleshman,  and his two sisters, Linda Kahoe and Kim Fleshman.

Jimmy is survived by his wife of 42 years, April Sunday Fleshman; a daughter, Jessica Lorah of Georgetown, DE; four brothers, Donald (Debbie) Fleshman, Jr., Phil Fleshman, Steve Fleshman, and Curt (Jill) Fleshman. He is also survived by seven nephews and eight nieces.
