Jon Phillip Stairs, 86, a 45-year resident of Harwood, MD passed away on January 22, 2026. Born on June 10, 1939 in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Sherman Homer Stairs and Marian Noullet Stairs, Jon graduated from Plum Township High School in 1958 before serving in the United States Army from 1958 to 1961, where he specialized in cryptology. He began his impressive career with the US Federal Government at the Department of the Army in Lexington, KY from 1961 to 1963, before transferring to GSA in the communication security field. He retired in 1995 as Deputy Commissioner in charge of the Office of Information Security Management.
Jon married Elizabeth Esther Farkas in 1961 and together they had a son, Jon Kevin. Elizabeth passed away in 1986. In 1988, he met his wife Jane. Jon was an excellent golfer and was a founding member of the Golf Club at South River. He was also a board member and treasurer of the Harwood Civic Association. He always had a garden every year and at times had some chickens. He enjoyed traveling, and he and Jane took many interesting and exciting trips and cruises together around the world.
In addition to his parents, Jon was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth and his brother, Sherman. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Jane; his son, Jon Kevin; his grandson, Jon Kolin; and his granddaughter, Kaylea Esther.

Jean Marie Manahan, 87, of Davidsonville, MD, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2026, surrounded by her husband of 67 years, Maurice Harlow Manahan and her family and loved ones.

Born on January 28, 1938 in Big Rapids, Michigan, Jean lived a life as a dedicated wife, mother and educator. She was raised in Rodney, Michigan until her marriage to Harlow on June 21, 1958.  Upon her marriage, she became the devoted Navy wife and mother traveling to many new locations and homes throughout the years while raising four children.

She was a teacher and took tremendous pride in her career accomplishments. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Education from St. Mary’s College and Master’s degree in education from the University of Maryland. She taught at Ryken High School, Leonardtown High School, St. Mary’s College and Bowie State University. 

Jean is survived by her husband, Harlow Manahan, her children and spouses: Mark and Lynn Manahan, Greg and Tammy Manahan, Susan (Manahan) Snow and Michael Snow, and Karen (Manahan) Talbott and James Talbott; her 6 grandchildren: Christopher and Courtney Manahan, Halie and Evan Andrew, Michael Snow, Jr, Katherine Snow, Jackson Talbott and Savannah Talbott; and 3 great grandchildren: Thomas Manahan, Bennett Manahan and Wyatt Andrew. Jean is also survived by her brothers, James Straub and Samuel Straub. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Inez Straub.

Those who knew Jean will remember her for her strength, resiliency, elegance, selfless giving and dedication to God and her family.  She made every house a home no matter where she lived during her life as the wife of a Navy pilot. Harlow loves her so much for her dedication to her family, her personal pursuits and her loving smiles. She found joy and pleasure in sewing, gardening, cooking (made the best cheesecake ever!), stocks, reading, and her many travels with Harlow. She sponsored numerous foreign national USNA midshipmen, making them feel at home while away from their home countries. 

Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Jean’s life on Saturday, January 24, 2026 at a visitation from 10:00 to 11:30, her funeral service from 11:30-12:30, and a luncheon immediately following at the Davidsonville Methodist Church, 819 W. Central Avenue, Davidsonville MD 21035. Burial will be private at a later date.

Jean will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of being a part of her life and loving her. 


Richard S. Fentress, Sr., 70, of Friendship, MD, passed away on January 18, 2026, after a battle with lung cancer. Born on May 12, 1955, in Washington, DC to the late Albert and Hazel Fentress, Richard graduated from Surrattsville High School and later went on to attend PG Community College.

Richard was an ASROC Gunner’s Mate in the U.S. Navy, then worked as a carpenter at Bowling Air Force Base. After an accident, Richard retired out on disability. He continued his love of woodworking throughout most of his life, building porches, cabinets, furniture, among other things, as he could manage. He briefly worked as a realtor for a few years, earning many accolades for his success. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, American Pool Association, and was a coach for the United Youth Club.

All who know Richard know that he was a dedicated Redskins football fan who rarely missed a game, even when feeling under the weather. He loved playing pinochle, taking drives, listening to classic rock, and spending time with his family. During the warmer months, you would find him in the yard riding his lawn mower or tractor. Most recently, Richard took a family trip to Disney World and, though it was his second trip, it was the first time he was able to meet and greet Mickey Mouse, his favorite character of all time. Richard really enjoyed playing Ms. Pac-Man (and other video games) with his daughter when they were younger, Monopoly and card games like Hand and Foot, and more recently Woodoku on his computer. He always had pets—he loved his dogs, but secretly (or not so secretly) loved the cats more. His boys lovingly called him Hippy because of his long hair and laid-back ways. He was, though, most proud of the nickname PawPaw, as he was called by his granddaughter. His love for his family was without measure.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his brothers, Joe, Mike, and Bill; his two in-laws, Frank and Betty Drish. He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Cheryl; his children, Sheri of Woodbridge, VA, Richard Jr. of Friendship, MD, and Matthew (Katie) of Owings, MD; his grandchildren, Aidan and Madison; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Friends are invited to celebrate Richard's life on Wednesday, January 28 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD where his funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11 am. Phillip Donald Ates, 88, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 18, 2026. “Phil” was a longtime Prince George’s County resident who was involved in local, State, and National politics. He recently resided at the Baywoods of Annapolis Retirement Community.

Phil was a graduate of Suitland HS, class of 1957. He enjoyed golf, fishing, gardening, and traveling; including many golf trips with friends. He was a lifelong Redskins, Nationals, and Terps Fan, and attended many ACC and NCAA Basketball tournaments. Summers were spent at Breezy Point Beach cottage with the highlights of many 4th of July celebrations and cookouts. Phil enjoyed dancing, especially with his favorite partner Tish. He was devoted to his family for whom he was called “Pop” by his grandchildren, and had many close friends from every stage of his life. Phil was a member of the Army National Guard, a retired State Farm Insurance Agent (President of the National Association of State Farm Agents), a longtime Terrapin Club Member (50+ years), former President and Coach of the Lanham Boys and Girls Club, and former President of St. Matthias Parents Club.

Phil was predeceased by his beloved wife of 47 years, Patricia (Tish) Ates. Survived by his children Robin (Earle) Kirkley, Dana (Neil) McAnney, James Randall “Randy” (Julie) Ates, and Laura (Mike) Pautler, including 12 grandchildren,10 great-grandchildren, his sisters Anne (Bobby) Drescher and Linda (Marty) Moran, many nieces and nephews, and longtime companion, Wilma Richards.

Lindburgh Dolan, 91, a resident of Felton, Delaware, formerly of Edgewater, Maryland, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family.

Born on September 1, 1934, in Kentucky, Lindburgh was the son of the late General Henry "Jack" Dolan and Lula Dolan. He was one of twelve siblings. Lindburgh was the beloved husband of the late Betty Louise Aisquith Dolan and the devoted father of the late David Dolan.

He is survived by his children, Charles L. Dolan, Gary L. Dolan, and Melody S. Dolan. Lindburgh was a proud grandfather to the late Chuckie L. Dolan, Anthony (Stacey), Jasmine Nicole, Dr. Charles Jr., Rick Dolan (Laurie), and Andrea. Lindburgh was a cherished great-grandfather to eight great-grandchildren: Serenity, Trent, Lilliana AKA Lily, Ryan Jr., Graycen, Charlotte Louise, Domonick, and Ashley. And many nieces and nephews

Lindburgh was the owner of L. Dolan Tree Experts and worked for Asplundh Tree Company for over 40 years, dedicating his life to his trade with pride and integrity.

He had a deep love for spending time with his family, gardening, and racing his El Camino "Super Dragon" at Capital Raceway. He owned several racehorses and truly enjoyed the excitement of racing; this was a passion he enjoyed sharing with his family. Lindburgh also treasured time spent with his lifelong friends and loved hunting, fishing, and Crabbing.

Lindburgh will be remembered for his hard work, love of family, and the many memories he created with those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Edmund A. Miarecki, 79, a 45-year resident of Edgewater, MD died suddenly on January 18, 2026 due to heart-related causes.
Mr. Miarecki was born on April 1, 1946 in Springfield, MA, Edmund waas the only son of Edmund and Helen (Blaszko) Miarecki who were longtime residents of Enfield, CT. Mr. Miarecki attended Enfield public schools and graduate from Enfield High School in 1964. He attended Syracuse University from 1964 through 1968 before graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1968. He then attended the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, where he received a Juris Doctorate Degree in 1972. He married Leona Diane Dillow on November 11, 1978. For a short period, they resided in Alexandria, VA. In 1980, they moved to Edgewater, MD where they lived until his death. They also maintained a winter residence in Vero Beach, FL for many years. They had no children.
Mr. Miarecki was admitted to the Bar of the District of Columbia in January 1973, and began working as an attorney with the Department of Defense. He became a member of the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the United States District Court in the District of Columbia. He subsequently rose to the position of Counsel for Special Programs at one of the Defense Department’s major field activities. He worked on contracts and litigation involving some of the Department’s most sensitive contract and weapons systems. He retired after 27 years with the Department.
Mr. Miarecki was an avid sailor and owned several sailboats, the last being a 40-foot sloop named Kailani. He sailed for over 30 years on the Chesapeake Bay with some offshore trips to Newport, Florida, and Bermuda. He enjoyed all aspects of the water and was a dedicated swimmer as well as a boater. He was a member of the Hunter Sailing Association and Caliber Sailing Association for many years, and was also a member and supporter of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. He was also an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the St. Mary’s Right to Life Committee, and the Knights of Columbus Council 1384.
Mr. Miarecki is survived by his loving wife, Diane; sister-in-law, Darlene (Charles) Raines; nephews, Chuck (Marzella) Raines, Bruce (Jennifer) Dillow, Josh (Heather) Dillow, Blair (Mike) Jones, Brooke Dillow, and Travis Dillow; and many cousins, including Walter Miarecki, Steven and John Miarecki, Edwina Wilcock, and Mary Helming.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Mr. Miarecki’s life on Tuesday, January 27 from 4 to 7 pm at Kalas Funeral Home and Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 N. Bestgate Rd., Annapolis, MD on Wednesday, January 28 at 10:30 am. Interment will be at St. Adalbert Cemetery in Enfield, CT at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105).
