Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory

Anna Christodoulou (nee Piera), 98, of Oyster Bay, NY and previously of Annapolis, MD, passed away on April 12, 2020. She was born October 15, 1921, in the village of Yialousa on the Island of Cyprus, to the late Athanasis and Maroulla Piera. Anna left Cyprus for London, England in 1950 where she married John Christodoulou, also from Yialousa, and welcomed the birth of their two children, Mary (Maraiba) and Christopher. She and her family emigrated to Annapolis, MD in 1963 to join her siblings, Michael Piera and Antigone Loizou, and their families. Anna worked at the United States Naval Academy for many years as a seamstress in the tailor shop where she made many friends and took great pride in helping young midshipmen look their best. She became a beloved member of the Annapolis Greek Cypriot community, many of whom also had their origins in Yialousa. She loved hosting people in her home and sharing the beautiful flowers and tasty vegetables from her plentiful gardens as well as fruits and nuts from the many trees in her bountiful yard. She was also a wonderful cook who treated her family and friends to a wide assortment of Greek specialties, pastries and breads. She enjoyed when family and friends would visit her unannounced and enter her home or garden. She loved hosting them and made sure they left with something tasty or beautiful from her kitchen or garden. In fact, she encouraged them to stop by even when she was not home to pick flowers, vegetables or fruits from her yard. This sense of community gave her immense joy. After retiring, she made more friends at the local farmer’s market, where she and her husband, John, shared their baked goods, fig trees, flowers, fruits and vegetables with the broader community. She made still more friends over the many years she practiced yoga. Anna also cultivated a loving connection with many of the young people in the Greek community associated with Ss. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church. So much so, that in her later years she was referred to as “Yia Yia (Greek for grandmother) Anna”. While she delighted in that title and her connection to young people, it took on a whole new meaning when she welcomed her grandchildren, Matthew and Nicole, into the world. Anna was preceded in death by her husband, John; her daughter, Mary (Maraiba); her siblings, Christina, Kyriacoulla ”Koulou”, Angeliki, and Michael. She is survived by her son, Christopher and his wife Hilary of Kings Park, NY; her grandchildren, Matthew and Nicole; her sister, Antigone Loizou of Annapolis; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends in Annapolis, England, Cyprus and around the world. Due to the corona virus situation, funeral services will be private, but family and friends will be invited to a celebration of Anna’s life when conditions permit. Cassandra “Cassie” Brooke Bothmer

On April 10, 2020, our magnificently beautiful daughter, Cassie, died from multiple organ failure as a result of her addiction to heroin and crack cocaine. She was 29 years old. We want to share her story in the hope that lives may be saved and her death will not be in vain. No one plans to be an addict.

As a child, Cassie was a treasure. She was raised in a Christian home where she was surrounded by love and was gifted in so many ways. She was a light to so many and her future was filled with promise.Addiction does not discriminate. Using heroin once is all that it takes to get hooked; from then on you are playing Russian roulette. This is what happened to Cassie. Heroin is a demon that affects the way your brain processes pleasure, taking over not just your brain but your life, destroying families and friendships.

Cassie was beautiful, feisty, in-your-face outspoken, had a robust, contagious laugh, would do anything for a friend, and always lit up a room with her smile, energy and crazy sense of humor. She had a deep love for the under-privileged and those with special needs. Hers was a 10 year struggle, starting with opioids and progressing to heroin. Many loved ones did everything they could to get her to stop, but heroin won the battle and took her body and mind. It did not, however, steal her heart or her salvation.

The day Cassie died, a part of us died along with her. We will miss her every day for the rest of our lives. The pain of her death is heartbreaking and intolerable, which is why stories like Cassie’s should not be ignored. The only way we will conquer the heroin epidemic is to share our stories and raise awareness.

Cassie will be greatly missed by her mother and father, Mark and Carrie Packett Bothmer; her biological father Glenn Taylor, II; her beautiful daughters, Avah Kreamer and McKenna Bothmer; her sisters, Caillie Medlin, Carleigh-Ann Bothmer and Caraline Bothmer; her brothers, Glenn Taylor III and Dylenn Taylor and their mother Kristina LewnesTaylor; her loving grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.

Cassie, you have now found the peace you so desperately searched for here on earth. Before your descent into drugs, you trusted Jesus as your Savior and that fact is the biggest reason we can smile through the pain. Knowing you, there is no doubt you have a front row seat in heaven and are ecstatic with how many people loved you and have been truly affected by your death. Knowing you, you would also be screaming at the top of your lungs to get the attention of those who are considering this path, begging them to find hope and peace in the only true source of life, Christ Jesus.

A celebration of her heavenly homecoming will be held at Chesapeake Christian Fellowship in Davidsonville, Maryland at a date to be announced in the future due to the restrictions associated with COVID-19. Out of respect for our family absolutely no drama will be tolerated. Let us honor Cassie for the beautiful young woman she was when the heroin didn't have its death grip on her.

"For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor death, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.." Romans 8:38-39

Br. Leonard Konopka
August 8, 1933 – April 5, 2020

Brother Leonard Konopka, MIC, a religious brother in the Congregation of Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception of the Most B.V.M. passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2020 at the Little Sisters of the Poor Jeanne Jugan Residence in Washington, DC. He was 86.

Born on August 8, 1933 in Detroit, MI, Br. Leonard was the youngest of seven children, of whom four became priests or religious.

He entered the Marian novitiate in 1951 and made final vows in 1958. During that time, he helped with the construction of the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, MA by carving some of the decorative wood pieces.

He was a professed religious for 67 years and spent about 45 of those years in the Washington, DC area. He served the community in many different capacities, including provincial councilor, member of the provincial formation committee, and superior of the Stockbridge and Brookeville houses, as well as treasurer and procurator (shopper) in the various communities in which he lived.

In the late 1970s, he helped found the Mother of Mercy Prayer Group at the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy, which continues to gather to the present day. He was also the cofounder of the Marian Home of Prayer, located at our former novitiate in Brookeville, MD and on Oakview Terrace in Washington, DC. The Home of Prayer provided spiritual healing and retreats, which served many people from around the country.

He greatly cared for his confreres and for the many friends of the community, and he helped provide for the upkeep of the Divine Mercy Chapel in Brookeville, MD and the house chapel in Washington, DC.

Always ready with a smile and a humorous line, Br. Leonard was like a brother to all. He loved classical music, swimming and sharing meals with families and friends.

Br. Leonard was also an extraordinary promoter of the message of the Divine Mercy. Since around the year 2000, Br. Leonard organized the annual Divine Mercy Sunday celebration at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. He also established a regular Sunday Mass and the praying of the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy at the (then) John Paul II Cultural Center (now the Saint John Paul II National Shrine).

He once shared that what drew him to become a religious brother in the Marians of the Immaculate Conception was the desire to serve others the way Christ did. “Service is what I came here for, to be like our Lord. I came not to be served but to serve. Everything else is insignificant and passes away or falls apart; but [when it comes to] serving … there’s always a need.” Reflecting on his role as the shopper for the Washington house, he added, “It’s bigger than [merely] buying food. That’s not the end [goal]. Buying food is the means by which you serve the Church.” Over the years, his particular responsibilities would come and go. “The Home of Prayer ended, the novitiate [in Brookeville] closed. But what kept me going was knowing that I was serving Christ through it all.”

In his later years, Br. Leonard faithfully spent a holy hour every evening before the Lord. Earlier in his life, he says, he might have occasionally spent 1.5 or even 2 hours watching TV or a movie. Then, at a certain point, he sensed the Lord asking him, “If you can spend two hours watching a movie, why not spend one hour with me?” From that point onward, he was always faithful to his holy hour and to meditating on the Word of God.

Br. Leonard was a gifted pastoral councilor and spiritual director. Frequently, he would be surprised by the inspirations that the Lord would put on his heart while directing souls. He once said with a sense of wonder, “People show up” for spiritual direction, and helpful words ”come out of my mouth.” He attributed this as a gift from the Lord and also to the time that he spent before the Blessed Sacrament.

Br. Leonard was predeceased by his parents, Anthony and Stefanie (Ostafin) Konopka, his brothers Fr. Edward, Benjamin and Joseph, and his sisters Helen Saunders, and Sr. Edwardine. His sister Sr. Josetta is still living in Ohio. He has ten nieces and nephews, sixteen great-nieces and great-nephews, one great-great-niece and one great-great-nephew.

He was much loved by his family, who enjoyed spending time with him whenever he would visit them in Florida or Detroit. Many friends from different parts of the country, but especially from the Washington, DC area, will greatly miss his spirit of loving service and his sense of humor. And the members of his religious community recall with great fondness his Saturday-morning eggs, his love for the Washington Redskins and how he would describe any tasty food as “deadly!” or even “double deadly!”

Despite having been in and out of hospitals and a rehab facility for nearly two months, he was able to be transferred a few days before he expired to the Little Sisters’ Residence. There he received the anointing of the sick and, on the day he passed, Holy Communion.

Due to the coronavirus, the funeral Mass and burial at the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, MA will be held privately, but the Marians look forward to celebrating a public memorial service when social distancing restrictions are lifted.

May Br. Leonard’s soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.
