Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory

In celebration and to honor the life of Zakary Sunrise Hubbard, who is gone from this earth on March 30, 2020 but will live on in our hearts always and forever. Zak is the amazing Superdad to Zakary Preston Jr, Shayna Nicole, and Samantha Rae, from his longtime relationship with their mother, Lisa Nicole Hill. He is the most awesome and coolest brother to Aron David and Alexander George, the most beloved light of our lives to his parents Catherine Lee Hartman and Hilary Warren Hubbard, and the most special grandson of Patricia Lee and George Frederick Hartman. He has many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and friends who will miss seeing the glint in his eyes and the smile on his face. No words can capture our deep love for you, our longing to be with you, and the emptiness we feel without your physical presence in our lives.

Your name suits you as you are a bright and shining sunrise in our lives. You can fix anything and are happiest when you are doing something to help someone else or solve a problem. You are our teacher in life and in death and have opened up our hearts. Your heart was too big to be contained in this world. You are now like an eagle soaring free, powerful and beautiful.

As a successful real estate agent for over 25 years, Pat took a short hiatus to operate a small business (Pat was a breast cancer survivor), “A Special Touch,” for 5 years, aiding women to regain their dignity during the healing process. The desire to help women was so powerful it led her to testify before the Maryland House of Delegates encouraging representatives of the need to for insurance companies to cover products like mastectomy prosthetics for women, wigs and accessories, which are essential in the healing process. She fought the Good Fight.

When she wasn’t busy working, you could find her spending quality time with family, which was precious to her. A favorite getaway was an excursion to the Eastern Shore to enjoy a good cocktail and crabs overlooking the water at one of her favorite restaurants; or playing video poker at the American Legion. For longer stints of relaxation, Pat enjoyed cruising the seas with family and friends to beautiful beaches in the Caribbean or visiting her favorite place, Aruba. Pat was called wife, honey, momma, nanny, friend, sister, and daughter by all who loved her. She was cherished by all and will be sorely missed.

Raul de Arriz was born in Madrid Spain on October 6, 1959 to Pilar Redondo and Luis (Lucho) de Arriz.
He had an adventurous and mischievous youth that spanned over Madrid, Peru, Argentina, Ireland and the United States. While at Colegio de Nuestra boarding school in Madrid, more than one nun attempted to rein in his unruly and unique behavior. Raul had an incredible bond with his grandparents, Joaquin and Concha Redondo of Madrid Spain. His mother Pilar Redondo (predeceased) was a beautiful heart, unique and happy soul. Raul was so much like his mom.
He studied liberal arts at Georgetown University. Biology, Neuro-Science, Architecture and Psychology at Montgomery College and University of Maryland. Education prior to college also included Colegio de Nuestra boarding school, Organizacion Juvenil Espanola, San Augustin Lima Peru and University Argentina.
His businesses included MacCorner, Absolute Mac, MCIS Corporation, Raras Music, RAR Enterprises and DeArriz Companies. Incredible businessman and work ethic.
How do you best describe Raul? To know him is to know his music. To know him is to know his love of family and friends.
Raul was a gifted and self taught songwriter and musician. His passion and love for music was unprecedented to all that knew him. He couldn’t pass a piano without stopping to play. Be it the Palace de las Cortes hotel in Madrid, Congressional CC, homes of friends or the Johns Hopkins Weinberg lobby. He entertained all with his amazing talent.
Raul had a heart big enough to include all, as we know from his enormous bear hugs and killer smile. So passionate of life, he ended every call or text with – “Big Kiss!” Nothing was more important than his family and close friends. So proud of his children, best described as:
Maximilian – The ultimate father, husband, family and businessman. Well aware of how to balance and prioritize. So much like his father physically, in business, in family and emotions. Loving husband to Misty and father to the twins, Oliver and Felix.
Aristedes – The brilliant engineering student with talents in theater, music, dance, the arts. A critical thinker, world traveler. Again like his father, so authentic in all aspects of his life.
Heather – A daughter not biologically, but definitely his. Two peas in a pod, kindred spirits, artists, animal lovers and tech buddies. His heart was big enough to include her as she so willingly accepted, so blessed.
My Raul. You made my life an adventure, a journey so full of unconditional love and total understanding. You’ll always be my kokopelli, my bohemian life partner, my love.
Surrounded this week by his loving family, Michele Bruno (life partner), son Maximilian de Arriz with Misty, Oliver and Felix, son Aristedes de Arriz with partner Kerri and loving daughter Heather Garrigus. As well as his very close friends, he parted. In the words of his mother Pilar- Sleep amongst the angels my love, Te Quiero Mucho. Un beso grande!

Martha Jo Mitchell Izaguirre

Martha Jo was born in Arab Alabama, but grew up in Tennessee. A true southern gal who loved its prized ingredient—Buttermilk! Her dessert was the “Crumble In” (a tall glass, never a bowl) and fill it with leftover cornbread and cold buttermilk. Martha’s life wasn’t easy, growing up during the recession times were tough. But she had a strong foundation with her sister, Charla Ann and mother “Mitch” (Nanny). They did what they had to do to survive and had a close bond that was unbreakable. Mom later told me that is where she gained her strength and independence. I’d like to think that is a trait she passed onto me! I am still working on the “no filter”, say what’s on my mind part of it! Those of you who knew Jo….well need I say more!
Martha attended Washington College Academy in Limestone Tennessee, Class of 51. She was a tall point guard on the W.C Recerettes basketball team, which were the 1950 District and Regional Champions. Her senior year she was voted “Best Sense of Humor.” I can hear her saying “The best things in life are free…. For example, my opinions!” I truly believe that Hallmark Maxine was created about her and her sister Charla Ann. If anyone can say it like it is…it’s definitely Jo!

Later she ventured up to DC for a job and eventually met “Izzy” (Charles Izaguirre). It’s funny because we never got the full story of how they met, all I know is that they were at a party and bumped into each other in the kitchen….it was fate because they married in 54. Our parents set up roots in DC, Hyattsville, Lewisdale and Edgewater. Jo made friendships that lasted her lifetime. WCA Alumni, DC neighbors, Duplex neighbors, “The St’ Marks Gang”, Knights of Columbus Crew, The Washington Inc. Family, The Turkey Pointers, CHMA Alumni and the Senior Center.

Martha worked for The Department of the Navy and received many awards for exemplary performance in the word processing field. She started her own business “Wordwise”. Became an event planner in DC at Washington Inc. Then worked for friend and colleague, Mike Deavers, before she retired.

Jo and Izzy were married for 53 years before Dad passed away. Had four great kids; Tony, Tom, Steve (Maryanne) and Carla (Ray). Two handsome grandsons Stephen (Michael) and Jacob. She missed Izzy but still had a lot of life to live.

Martha loved to travel, play cards, go to the casino and hang out at the senior center. She became a big Washington Nationals fan and watched them win their first World Series! At 86 she still drove and would take friends to doctor appointments or out to lunch. I’m going to throw another Maxine quote out there because it’s so mom…. “Aging hasn’t slowed me down, and it hasn’t shut me up!” I want you to know that she lived life to the fullest. She was honest, hardworking and loved her family. She had a wild spirit and the words “firecracker and pistol” were used to describe her recently. She was a good wife, mom, Momma Jo, Majo, sister, daughter, aunt, and friend to us all.

One of the last conversations I had with mom was that she wasn’t ready to go… she wasn’t done living her life, she had people that depend on her, who was going to make dressing and pickles? We made her comfortable at home but all she was worried about was if Tom decorated the front porch with all the stuff she bought for St Patrick’s Day! Her mind was sharp but her body couldn’t hold on any longer…. It’s only fitting that she passed away on St Patty’s. So now every year we can celebrate her life…. We will be doing that with a Crab cake and Bloody Mary! Love you, Mom.
We will have a life celebration and interment in Arlington at a later date. Please email cslye71@gmail.com if you wish to be notified about those dates.

(Agnes) Nell O’Rear

(Agnes) Nell O’Rear, 99, went home to be with the Lord on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2020. She passed away peacefully at her home in Temple Hills, Maryland surrounded by members of her loving family. Her last words to them were “to be continued.”

Nell was born in Rockdale, Texas on March 26, 1920 to Agnes (“Meme”) and Buford Sudbury. Nell’s lifelong love of music surfaced early as she practiced “playing” on her pretend piano, a windowsill at home, where she “never made a mistake.” Later, she began piano lessons, taught others to play, majored in music at Baylor University, and played the piano at her church in Freeport, Texas. At church, she met her future husband, Jack O’Rear, a fellow Texan who worked as a chemist for Dow Chemical Company. After Jack enlisted in the Navy, they married in 1944 in La Jolla, California and eventually settled in Washington, D.C. following the war.

Nell and Jack joined Congress Heights Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. where many forever friendships were formed. As the suburbs developed in the 1950s, Nell and Jack moved to Temple Hills, Maryland, where they raised their children, Grady, Molly, and Danny. The family attended Temple Hills Baptist Church, and later became charter members of Broadview Baptist Church. More recently, Nell has been an active member at First Baptist Church of Camp Springs, Maryland.

Nell’s life reflected her faith and commitment to God and the community of His family. As a pianist, organist, and teacher, she reached out and shared God’s love through countless activities including teaching various ages in Sunday School, directing Children’s Music Ministries, playing for adult and youth choirs, participating in the WMU (Women’s Missionary Union), serving in the Eastern Star, and teaching piano to students of all ages.

Nell is survived by her children: Grady (Tena) O’Rear, Molly (Teddy) Keller, and Danny (Kim) O’Rear; grandchildren: Scotia Mortensen, Solveig Mortensen, Gary Summers, April Rust, Brennan (David) O’Rear, Maggie Benedette, Kevan (Amanda) O’Rear, Emily Keller, and Brian Keller; and great-grandchildren: Liam, Jack, Pippa, Breanna, Caitlyn, and Davin.
