Carrie H. Pulley was the seventh child born to Clem Edward and Zulean Golden Turner Ross.  She was born on June 26, 1927 and departed this life on Monday, September 30, 2019. Carrie was raised in Loudon County, Virginia where she met and later married Wilmer Thomas (deceased) on February 25, 1948.  Of this union, three daughters and one son were born.  Carrie and Wilmer lived several years on the eastern shore of Maryland before moving to Washington, DC.  Carrie was employed at the National Children’s Center as Staff Supervisor until her retirement in 1993.  Carrie and Wilmer dissolved their union after twenty-five years of marriage. On March 14, 1975, Carrie married the late Alfred W. Pulley, Sr. As a result of this marriage, she became stepmother to Alfred’s five children.

During her lifetime, Carrie became a licensed real estate agent in the state of Maryland.  She was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and enjoyed boating, crabbing and fishing.  Carrie was also a member of the Eastern Star, Miriam Chapter No. 4.  She and three of her sisters were members of the Virginia State Society.  She was very close with her sisters and shared a unique relationship with each one of them.  The book “Sister Friends” by Michelle V. Agins and Julia Chance detailed their monthly gathering that was established as a tradition known as Sisters Day – Ross Family Style.  The Ross Girls as they were known spent many hours eating, laughing, gossiping and reminiscing. As quoted by Carrie in the book “After we lost three sisters and four brothers, we decided to do this to stay close.” 

Carrie was a long-time member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church where she sang in the choir. She was a member of the Senior Group and developed lasting friendships throughout the church. She attended faithfully until her illness. 

Carrie loved to cook and bake.  The family enjoyed her cooking and looked forward to the caramel cakes she made for family gatherings.  

Carrie leaves to mourn her children, Carol Watkins, Gloria Thompson, Terry (Michael) Thomas-Whetstone, and W. Greerlin “Greer” Thomas, Diane Burrell, Mary (John) DeSalvo, Anne (Joseph) Mazzola, Luther “Pete” Pulley; grandchildren, Dana (Anthony), Damon (Robin), Dwayne, Greerlin, Darren, Timothy, Shauntee;  John (Gorette), Thomas,  Jacqueline (Raymond), Alexandra,  Joseph,  Seth (Chansoria), Tammy, Marve (Nique), and Kayla; 19 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; three sisters, Gloria Walker, Dorothy Jackson, and Mary Settle; two brothers James (Brenda) Anderson and Paul (Annette) Moore; sisters-in-law Sally Pulley and Alma (Theophilus) Stokes; nieces, nephews, and a host of other family and friends.


A graveside service will held on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Arlington National Cemetery. Please arrive at the Administration Building at 1:15 p.m. with one's own transportation. 


Griffin C. Walter, 15, a lifelong resident of Lothian, MD, died on Sunday, September 29 due to injuries sustained in a dirt bike accident.  Born on  June 3, 2004 in Annapolis, MD to Steve and Maria Walter, Griffin was a tenth grader at Southern Senior High School in Harwood, MD. He enjoyed video games, riding dirt bikes, hunting, shooting guns, karate and boxing. He was a Senior Red Belt at East Coast Martial Arts in Edgewater, MD. In addition to his parents, Griffin is survived by his siblings, Nicholas Sieh and Isabel and Sophie Walter all of Lothian; his grandparents, Joseph and Maria Walter of Lothian, Lillian Kinser of Edgewater and Donald and Loretta Sieh of San Antonio, TX and his aunts and uncles, Wilseydee Walter and John and Michelle Sieh. Griffin was preceded in death by his older brother, Steven Jacob Walter ; his uncle, Ronnie Walter and his grandfather, Glenn Kinser. Gavin Alexander Payne was 16 years old at the time of his passing.  He loved life to the fullest.  There was never enough time in a day for Gavin.  He always had to be doing something.  He loved the water whether swimming in the ocean or pool, being in a boat, riding a jet ski, fishing or crabbing.  Gavin also loved scary movies, cooking, boxing and music, so much so that he expressed interest in being in a band.  He had a special gift for making anyone laugh.  Gavin especially enjoyed working on things with his dad.  He had a natural curiosity and it brought Gavin great joy to figure out how things worked.  He also loved riding dirt bikes and go-karts with his dad.  Gavin was a smart, caring young man.  He was his mom Lisa’s best friend.  His heart was exceptionally kind; he would help anyone.  Gavin especially loved helping the elderly.  He also cared very much for animals.  Gavin loved going with his family to Heritage Baptist Church where he was baptized.  His family meant everything to him.  He loved his little brother and sisters very much.  Gavin was a very helpful big brother.  His life goal was to join the military, stand for our flag and fight for our country.  Rest in peace, Gavin.  We love you.  

Gavin is survived by his loving parents, Scott and Lisa Payne; his sisters, Skylar and Rylee and his brother, Carter; his grandparents, Jadene and Scott Payne, Sr. and Sue and Mark Brown; his great-grandparents, Nancy and Bernie White; his aunts and uncles, La La and Michael Payne and Kellie and Nick Brown; three cousins, Julia, Charlotte and Lucie; and many extended family and friends.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Gavin's life at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 19, at Heritage Baptist Church, 1740 Forest Drive, Annapolis, MD.  Burial will be private. The family requests everyone dress as they normally would.

Douglas J. Mather, 64, passed away from a heart attack early in the morning of September 28, 2019.  Born on January 26, 1955 in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Joan Isabel Blizzard and Ronald Douglas Mather, Doug grew up in Timonium and graduated from Dulaney High School. For the last 25 years, he lived in Davidonsonville, Maryland.   

Like his dad, Doug worked for over 30 years as a land surveyor, a profession that he loved and in which he took great pride. 

He was a talented musician, writing songs and playing in bands from the time he was a teenager. For the last 30 years, he was the indispensable center of the Annapolis-based band Her, Him & I, which included his wife, Lydia, childhood friend Joe "Poppy" Girlando, and friends Joe Dyer and Eric Anderson. Just hours before he died, he was with his fellow musicians, practicing songs for the next gig. 

More than anything, Doug’s love of animals defined him.  Throughout his life, he had a menagerie of found and adopted pets:  iguanas, cats, birds, fish, turtles and always puppies.  He taught those around him that the way you treated animals reflected your character.  Doug’s character was loyal, loving, without judgment, steadfast and deep.   His love of animals led to the opening of Davidsonville Dogwalkers, a business that thrived until his sudden passing.  He loved nature and riding his motorcycle across the state on cool days.  

He took great care of his family, human and animal, and is survived by his partner and wife of 28 years, Lydia D’Wynter, and his puppies Shadda, China and Elle. He is also survived by his devoted sister, Kendi (Mather) Irwin, her husband David B. Irwin; by nephews Jeffrey and Mark Irwin; by Lydia's mother (Caroline) and father (Gerald), sister (Amanda Blue), brother-in-law (Matthew Blue) and niece (Everett).  

A celebration of life is planned for November 2, 2019 from 4 pm until time of service at 5 pm, at the Kalas Funeral Home and Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd, Edgewater, MD.

Dolores R. Fash, 88, a 50-year resident of Annapolis, MD and previously of Brooklyn, NY, passed away on September 26, 2019.  Born on January 26, 1931 in Brooklyn, Dolores graduated from the New York City public school system. Shortly after her marriage she was accepted to study at the Parsons School of Design.  Moving to Annapolis in 1966 Dolores pursued a career as an analyst at the Goddard Space Flight Center.  She was the owner of three children’s clothing and toy stores in Annapolis, Solomons Island, MD and Georgetown, Washington, DC.  Dolores was a member of the Ranger Rosary group at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Annapolis.  Active in the church she knitted hats for newborn babies at the local hospital and helmet caps for soldiers stationed in Afghanistan.  Dolores was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Frank H. Fash.  She is survived by her son, Frank H.J. Fash of Seattle, WA; her daughter, Deborah Alexander of Centreville, MD; and four grandchildren, Frankie and Nicholas Fash and Matt and Angela Alexander. Funeral services will be private. Barbara Louise Garland, 83, a 45-year resident of Harwood and previously of Annapolis, MD, passed away on September 26, 2019 at the George Washington University Hospital.  Born on January 14, 1936 in Annapolis to the late Evelyn and John Owens Jr., Barbara was a graduate of the Annapolis High School Class of 1954.  She went on to earn a degree at Washington Business College.  Barbara enjoyed a 30-year career with the Maryland State Income Tax Division and, during the 1960s, also provided accounting and payroll support for her parent’s business, J.E. Owens Jr. Contracting and Charter Bus Company.  Barbara was a member of Chesapeake Christian Fellowship.  She enjoyed country music, quilting, cooking, entertaining and farming; but most of all, she simply enjoyed spending time with her family.
Barbara is survived by her children, Scott (Dawn) Rogers of Edgewater, MD and Cathy (Chuck) Pearl of Harwood; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Sam) Spruce of Edgewater, Jessica (Brian) Solis of Harwood, and Eric, Ashley and Cassandra Rogers of Edgewater; and two great-grandchildren.

Colin Edwin Conisbee Wood, of Davidsonville MD, lost his courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on September 26,2019. He died peacefully with his family by his side. He was born in St. Annes, England on April 27, 1945.
He graduated from Nottingham University in England, first with a Ph.D in Chemistry and then in 2005 was awarded Doctor of Science.
He started his career as a research scientist at Phillips Research Laboratories where he developed a technique called Molecular Beam Epitaxy. He was head-hunted by Cornell University and emigrated to Ithaca in 1978 where he helped develop the Cornell Sub Micron Center. He returned to England briefly in 1982 to work at General Electric Research Laboratories. During that time he was a Visiting Industrial Professor at the Cavendish Laboratory of Cambridge University and the University of Cardiff. In 1987 he was awarded the Clifford C. Patterson medal from the Institute of Physics for contributions to electronic materials research.
He returned to Ithaca in 1988. Subsequently, he worked at the Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the University of Maryland and finally as a Program Officer at the Office of Naval Research in Arlington, VA.
In 1999, he was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society for pioneering and original contributions to the crystal growth of III-V materials by MBE, including the discovery of RHEED oscillation, delta-doping and low temperature GaAs.
He was an avid bird-watcher, visiting 72 countries in pursuit of his passion. He also loved gardening, crabbing and bee-keeping.
Colin is survived by his wife Ann of 52 years, his beloved daughter Catherine, son Andrew, daughter-in-law Kristen, grandchildren Emma and Miles, and  brother Robin and family in England.

Carl Nichols Hession, of Fort Washington, Maryland, passed away in his sleep on the morning of September 24, 2019, at the age of 57. 

 

Born on May 4, 1962, at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, “Nick” was the sixth child, and fourth son, of Henry F. X. Hession and June S. Hession.

 

Because he had Down Syndrome, Nick’s formal education started early.

 

Nick was educated at a DOD-sponsored school in Kaiserslautern, Germany from 1966-1969; at the Hope School in Prince George’s County, Maryland from 1969-1971; and at the Hillcrest Heights Special Center in Hillcrest Heights, Maryland from 1971-1983. 

 

To people who rode the P-17 Metrobus, who worked at the FDIC, or who attended St. Columba Catholic Church, Nick was a familiar face.

 

He began his employment at the FDIC following his graduation from Hillcrest Heights, working in the mail room there until 2017.

 

Nick was an ardent fan of the Washington Redskins, the Syracuse Orange, and Washington Capitals.  Nick watched televised games, read scores and standings in the Washington Post, and especially enjoyed attending some games in person with family or friends.  He enjoyed music, especially the bands “Foreigner” and “ABBA”.  He loved to sing along and play air guitar.

 

Nick is predeceased by his parents.  He is survived by his brother Henry Hession (Debbie) of Greenville, SC; sister Lisa Johnson (Duane) of Beavercreek, OH; brother Father Anthony Hession of Fargo, ND;  sister Catherine Hawkins (Craig) of Sterling, VA; brother Kenneth Hession (Alison) of Pearl City, HI; sister Tanya Lebron (John) of Bristow, VA; brother Tim Hession (Sheila) of Fort Washington, MD and numerous nephews and nieces. 

 

The family would like to thank all of Nick’s educators, neighbors, coworkers, church community, and others in the community who encouraged him on his path through life.

Anthony Michael Capuano, Sr. (Tony), 84, a resident of Edgewater, MD, and previously of Waldorf, MD died on Tuesday, September 24, 2019. Born January 10, 1935, in Bethlehem, PA, he worked as a plumber.  Tony served his country in the United States Army. He enjoyed golf, music, old movies and spending time with family. Tony was preceded in death by a son, Michael Anthony Capuano. He is survived by his four children, Francisco (Melissa) L. Capuano, Christina (Ronald) Hoffman, Anthony (Donna) M. Capuano, Jr., and Doris (Nicholas DiNicola) Jean Salvo;  14 grandchildren: Nicole Capuano Hancock, Briana Capuano, Francesca Howard, Christina Sedillo, Anthony Capuano, Nina Capuano, Ronald Hoffman, Raquel Capuano, Alexandra Hoffman, Erica Capuano, Michael Capuano, Anthony M. Kenneth V. Moreland, "Captain", a 20-year resident of Port St. Lucie, FL and a 62-year resident of Maryland, living in both Clinton and Severna Park, passed away on September 24, 2019.  He was born on February 6, 1937 in Washington, DC to the late Van and Leslie Moreland. Ken was a 1955 graduate of Suitland High School and continued his education at American University. In 1958 he joined the Washington, DC Metropolitan Police Department where he would serve for 21 years until his retirement. Ken's next professional endeavor was working as a Special Investigator for the U.S. General Services Administration from 1979 to 1999. He was a member of Henson Valley Christian Church, Woods Presbyterian Church, and Morningside Church. He volunteered for many years for Heroes, Inc., a non-profit organization serving families of fallen police officers. Ken enjoyed cheering on the Washington Redskins, Washington Wizards, and University of Maryland sports teams. He also loved boating, golfing, traveling, singing in church choirs, and most of all spending time with his family and friends.
In addition to his parents Ken is predeceased by his daughter, Patricia; and sisters, Evelyn Hamilton, Alice Wood, and Mildred Tierney. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carole F. Moreland; children, Kenneth V. of West Friendship, Richard W. of Davidsonville, Stephen M. of Crofton, and Kathleen Scheeler of Sykesville; a sister Audrey O'Leary of Port St. Lucie, FL; grandchildren, Richard, Ryan and Amanda Moreland, Ali Garritt, Rebecca Miles, Sarah Kleist, Deborah Crites, and Dylan and Miranda Scheeler; and five great-grandchildren.

Margaret Jane Klawitter, 80, died on Monday, September 23, 2019.  Born March 7, 1939, in Bledlow Ridge, High Wycombe, England, to the late Albert and Mabel Keen, she worked for Century 21 New Millennium and Marlboro Liquors.  Margaret was a member of the English Club.  She enjoyed antiquing, playing Mexican dominoes with her grandchildren, gardening, yard sales, English Robins, and teatime. Margaret is survived by two children, Craig (Karen) Klawitter of Mechanicsville, MD, and Michelle (Mark, Sr.) Jordan of Sudlersville, MD; two siblings, Jeffrey Keen, and Maureen Bristow, both of Bledlow Ridge, England; and six grandchildren, Mark, Jr., Autumn, Emma, Haidyn, and Grace Jordan, and Mackenzie Klawitter. Lydia L. Donovan, 64, a 45-year resident of Edgewater and previously of Perryville, passed away on Monday, September 23, 2019 at her home after a lengthy illness.

She was born on April 26, 1955 at Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace, MD to the late Charles and Agnes Keesey. She was a graduate of Perryville High School and received her Associate’s Degree from Harford Community College. She retired from the USDA as an administrative assistant.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Scott and her siblings Buddy and Linda.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Gary, her daughter Rebecca and grandson, Brody Hohn. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Monday, September 30, 2019 at 7pm at Chesapeake Christian Fellowship, 377 W. Central Ave., Davidsonville, MD. Interment will be private. Josefina "Penny" Alfiler Borbon, 77, passed away on September 23, 2019. Born on February 19, 1942 to the late Tomas Alfiler and Beatriz Del Rosario in Manila, Philippines.

Josefina had retired as a Registered Nurse at the Greater Southeast Community Hospital. She enjoyed playing the piano, reading, watching movies, and being a social butterfly.

Josefina is also predeceased by her son, Joel. She is survived by her husband, Jose Borbon, daughter, Gigi Blacetti, granddaughter, Christina and numerous other family members.

Jacquelyn Kruger Bateman (August 19, 1938 – September 21, 2019) died peacefully at her residence with her family at her side.  She was born in Washington, DC and lived her teenage years in Hyattsville, MD. She raised her family in Bowie, MD and retired to Lewes, DE in 1997.  Jackie moved to Edgewater this year to be closer to her family.  Jackie was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.  She was a great cook and excellent baker.  Jackie was a homemaker for many years until she returned to the workforce where she pursued her passion in architectural history with the City of Laurel, MD.  Jackie enjoyed her retirement where she often volunteered, traveled and bowled with her neighborhood friends always followed by lunch.
Jackie was predeceased by her husband Joe of 51 years, her parents, Myrtle and Jack Kruger and sister Janet Paquin.  Jackie is survived by her daughters Barbara Smiroldo (Jim) of Deale, MD; Charlotte Poe (Scott) of Stevensville, MD and Kathryn (Ed) Shamleffer of Prince Frederick, MD and eight grandchildren and one great grandchild, sister Joan Facchina of Owings, MD brother in-law John Bateman (Jeanne) and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Edwin N. Varias, Sr. 65, of Ft. Washington, MD passed away on September 21, 2019. Born on April 13, 1954 to Ernesto Varias and the late Naomi Naravaez in the Philippines. 

Edwin is not only survived by his Father. His Wife, Marita Varias. Children, Edwin Varias, Jr., Matthew Varias, Eric Varias, and Stephanie Varias. Grandchildren, Luna-Sophia and Noah Varias. Also by many Brothers, Sisters, Nieces, Nephews, and other relatives.

A viewing will take place on Sunday, September 29, 2019 from 2 pm until 9 pm at the the KALAS FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, 6160 Oxon Hill Road, Oxon Hill, MD 20745. A Mass will take place on Monday, September 30, 2019 at 10 am at the St. Columba Catholic Church, 7804 Livingston Road, Oxon Hill, MD 20745. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Clinton. MD

Randall Gregory Roe, Jr., “Greg”, 50, a lifelong resident of Mayo, MD, passed away at his home on September 19, 2019.  Born on January 22, 1969 in Annapolis, MD to Randall “Randy” Roe, Sr. and Barbara Daggett, Greg graduated from South River High School in 1987 and joined his father as co-owner of Roe Marine Service for many years.  During the last 10 years, Greg and his father managed the Liberty Marina in Edgewater, MD.  
Greg had a talent for home renovation.  He would purchase homes, renovate and keep them as rental properties, or flip them.  As a “master of all trades”, he was able to complete most of the work himself.  Greg also enjoyed boating, fishing, crabbing, metal detecting and cooking, and he looked forward to spending time at his beautiful log cabin in Pulaski, NY.  
One of Greg’s greatest passions was tending to his gardens.  He was very proud of the vegetables and herbs he grew every year but, even more, of his flowers, especially orchids.  Greg’s backyard was a visual feast of color and tranquility. It gave him peace and energized him at the same time.  
Above all, Greg most loved just being with his family, his friends and, especially his two dogs, Toby and Bailey.  He was a humble man of few words but he was quick with a compliment and could bring a room to laughter with an unexpected quip or wisecrack.
Greg is survived by the love of his life for the past 16 years, Sue Wertz; his mother, Barbara Daggett of Annapolis, MD; and his father and stepmother, Randy and Marlene Roe of Nanjemoy, MD.  He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Mike Daggett.

Thomas Richard Neumann passed away suddenly on September 18, 2019 in Annapolis, Maryland due to complications from multiple health issues. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut to Arthur Neumann and Pearl Anderson Neumann on July 17, 1945.

Tom grew up in southern California and after graduation from Duarte High School in 1963, he received his BA from the University of LaVerne. He later earned a Master’s Degree in Business from National University in San Diego, CA.

Tom had a 45-year career in the aerospace industry, the majority of which was spent with Lockheed Martin where he specialized in procurement and contracts and won many awards for his managerial excellence working on projects like the Manned Maneuvering Unit, an astronaut propulsion unit used in three Space Shuttle missions.

Tom met his wife Donna in college and they were married on September 5, 1969. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary surrounded by family, which was always the most important thing in his life. He worked hard to care for those closest to him and always let them know how much they were loved.

Tom is survived by his wife Donna Louise Neumann; his daughter Kimberly Dawn Neumann of New York, NY;  his son Terry Alexander Neumann, daughter-in-law Regina Petruzzi Neumann, granddaughter Maia Isabella Neumann and grandson Dominic Thomas Neumann of Round Hill, VA; his mother Pearl Anderson Neumann; his sister Doreen Rice (brother-in-law Brian Rice); his sister Pamela Murphy (brother-in-law Bill Murphy); his sister-in-law Sandra Claflin-Chalton; his nephew Carl Rice; and many dear friends.

A memorial service will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday September 29, 2019 at Kalas Funeral Home in Edgewater, MD.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at St. Columba Catholic Church, 7800 Livingston Rd., Oxon Hill, MD 20745. A private interment will be held with family at a date to be determined.

Randolph Edward Burke, 60, a 27-year resident of Edgewater, MD and previously of Annapolis, MD, died on Monday, September 16, 2019, at his home of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and Congestive  Heart Failure following a 2-year illness.

Known as Randy or R.B., he was born October 4, 1958, in Washington, D.C., to the late Robert E. and Dorcus H. Burke.  Randy worked as a product manager, carpenter and as a salesman at Tradewinds Marina.  He enjoyed woodworking, boats, cooking, collecting knives, and hunting.

In addition to his parents, Randy was preceded in death by his two sisters, Jeanette Burke "J.B." Music and Sandra Lee Burke
Randy is survived by his wife of 33 years, Hope Burke; a daughter, Amanda Lee Potts of Deale, MD; and a nine-month-old granddaughter, Anora Jaymes Potts.
