On Thursday, September 6, 2018; the beloved daughter of the late Martin M. and Monica Ann Cain; she is also survived by her brothers and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at 11 a.m. at the KALAS FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, 6160 Oxon Hill Rd., Oxon Hill, MD. Interment will be held on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Arlington National Cemetery. Please arrive at the Administration Building at 1:15 p.m. with one's own transportation. 

Gerald Sparer, a resident of Annapolis, MD since 1995, died on September 5, 2018 from complications of Parkinson’s disease.  He was 91. Jerry was born on March 24, 1927 in Middle Village, Queens, NY to Emmanuel and Minnie (Hochstadt) Sparer.  He was their middle child, and he liked to joke, “But, I’m the only son!”  He grew up valuing time spent with his aunts, uncles, and 32 first cousins.  He attended PS 87, PS 50, and Richmond Hill High School.
At the age of 17 (as soon as he was old enough), Jerry enlisted in the Navy and served proudly during the end of WWII.  Following the war, he attended college on the GI Bill, earning a bachelor’s degree in Labor Relations from The New School for Social Research and master’s degrees from Columbia (Economics) and Syracuse (Public Administration) universities. He moved to the Washington, DC area in 1952 and enjoyed a 25-year career in public service.  He worked at the Atomic Energy Commission, Department of the Navy, Radiological Health, US Public Health Service, National Institutes of Health, Food and Drug Administration, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, Office of Economic Opportunity, and the National Center for Health Services Research.  While serving in Associate Director positions at both OEO and NCHSR, he published more than 25 research papers and reports on cost, quality, and access to health care. After retiring from the Federal government in 1977, he continued his work on health services research in the private sector, directing landmark studies on the use of nurse practitioners and physician assistants, as well as several aspects of the End-Stage Renal Disease program.  He retired for the second time as Vice President of System Sciences, Inc. He then founded the Professional Rehabilitation Network in 1987 to provide speech, physical, and occupational therapy services in nursing homes in the DC-MD-VA region.  He retired for the third time after selling his business to Genesis Healthcare in 1996.  He immediately continued his work on behalf of others, spending more than 17 years as an active volunteer on the board of The Key School and serving 2 terms as board president. Jerry is survived by his beloved family:  his wife of 39 years, Marj; his children, Bruce (Sheryl), Robin, and Olivia (Ezana); his grandchildren, Jack, Mallory (Austin), and Zoe; his older sister, Evelyn Zivetz; and many nieces and nephews.  He was pre-deceased by his parents and his younger sister, Leona Sibelman. A private graveside service and interment will take place at Quantico National Cemetery.  A Celebration of Life for all his family and friends who are able to attend will be held on September 15, 4-7p at Mayo Beach Park, 4150 Honeysuckle Drive, Edgewater, MD 21037. Mildred E. Shellhouse
1924 - 2018

Mildred E. Shellhouse passed from this life on September 5, 2018 at Hart Heritage Estates in Forest Hill, MD. She was 94 years old. Prior to December 2017, Mildred was a resident of Sebring, FL but spent summers at her home in Edgewater, MD. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-five years, Arthur (Art) A. Shellhouse and two beloved sisters, Dorothea LaHayne and Catherine Everett. Mildred was born on August 29, 1924 in Washington, D.C. to Catherine and Alfred Betts. Mildred worked at the European Law Division of the U.S. Library of Congress from 1958-1980. Mildred and Art enjoyed many years of traveling throughout the U.S. and Mexico and made several trips to Europe. She also enjoyed vegetable gardening and experimenting with new recipes, to the delight of her family. Mildred never lost her enthusiasm for life and adventure, even in her advancing years. Mildred is survived by three sons, Art Shellhouse and wife Arlene of Fallston, MD; Chuck Shellhouse and wife Jacque of Suwanee, GA; Dennis Shellhouse of Blue Ridge, GA. She is survived by four grandchildren: Seth Shellhouse of Venice, CA; Brooks Shellhouse of Fallston, MD; Kristin Johnson of Roswell, GA, and Kyle Shellhouse of Roswell, GA. She is survived by four great-grandchildren: Brooklynn, Harper, Hensley and Reid.

Todd “Travis” Crowe, 41, of Woodland Beach in Edgewater, MD for 19 years and previously of Beverly Beach, MD died on Wednesday, September 5, 2018, at his home.  Born on May 2, 1977, in Washington, DC to Andrea “Jackie” Crowe of Edgewater, and the late Ralph David Crowe, Travis worked as a plumber.   Travis was a drummer and loved music.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was an avid outdoorsman. In addition to his mother, he is survived by two siblings, Kevin Murphy of Glen Burnie, and Katherine Vaughan, of Edgewater; many nieces and nephews, two that were considered as his own children were Markese Vaughan, Trinity Parker.

ANTON, Kathleen A. "Kay" (Berger). A 20 year resident of Davidsonville, Maryland, and previously from Boston, passed away in her home on September 3rd, 2018, surrounded by family. 

Born on April 24, 1941 in Boston, Kay was an avid gardener and loved spending time on her deck surrounded by her flowers, especially her beloved begonias. She adored her grandchildren aka "Nanny's Angels" and looked forward to any time she could spend with her family. She was sometimes referred to as "Flossy Nightingale" for her role in caring for many family members before their passing. She was a huge Red Sox fan and would watch most games to the end. She was a wonderful listener and counselor to many. She had an infectious belly laugh, that would often leave us in tears! She missed her husband, Frank of 57 years terribly and looked forward to dancing with him again. Her desire was to be driven (not flown) to Boston to be near family and friends. Sleep with the angels Kay, you deserve it! 

Kay was the daughter of the late Glenn Berger Sr. and Kathleen "Hazel" Berger. 

Beloved wife of the late Francis P. "Frank" Anton Sr. 

Loving mother of Robin and her husband Stephen Palmer of Katy, Texas, Kevin Castor of Dorchester, Caroline and her husband Joseph Landry of Davidsonville, Maryland, and the late Francis P. Anton Jr. 

Mother-in-law of Tara Anton of North Quincy. 

Devoted "Nanny" to Haylee, Amber, Lily, Jaimie, Chloe, and Brian. 

Sister of Joanne Albert of Deltona, Florida, and the late Glenn Berger II and his wife Carmella Berger of North Attleboro. Half-sister of Roy and his wife Marlene Berger of Mt. View, HI, and the late Maureen Jaffe. 

Survived by many nephews and nieces. 

Family and friends will honor and remember Kay's life by gathering for visiting hours in the Murphy Funeral Home, 1020 Dorchester Ave., DORCHESTER, on Friday, September 14th, from 6-8 P.M. 

Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Margaret Church of St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish, 800 Columbia Road, Dorchester, on Saturday morning, September 15, at 10 A.M. 

Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Dorchester.

On Monday, September 3, 2018, Walter Ulysses Coleman, Jr. age 58 passed at his home in Washington, DC.  Walter will be forever remembered by his wife and son. 
 
He   was born on July 26, 1960 in Washington, D. C.

As a Washington, DC native, Walter attended Bell Vocational High School where he graduated in 1980.  He immediately began a military career and returned to later work for GSA which included work at the White House.  Walter loved to talk especially about the Redskins and the Steelers.  He was an avid sports fan.  He always had this uncanny ability to engage others in conversation.
    
Walter was preceded in death by his loving parents, Walter Senior and Jestine, a brother, Roger, and by sisters, Cheryl and Diane.

Walter leaves behind to cherish his memory a loving wife of 23 years, Dana, a son Brandon, a sister Tracie (Tony) Whitaker, a brother Keith (Shameka) Coleman and a host of other family members.

Norma Mathes Knight, 97, of Edgewater and previously of Long Island, passed away on Sunday, September 2, 2018. Born on April 30, 1921, to the late William and Norma Hayes, she was a graduate of Jamaica High School in New York. Norma was the co-founder of Mathes Auto and Marine Parts in Kings Park, NY. She is a past parishioner at Holy Family Catholic Church in Davidsonville, and St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Kings Park.  She was a previous vice-president of the Kings Park, NY Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber's 1995 Woman of the Year for her outstanding service and commitment to others. Norma enjoyed life to the fullest, always being surrounded by friends, and loved planning parties for friends and family. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her first husband, Harold Mathes in 1986, and her second husband, Walter Knight in 2001; a daughter, Maryland Mathes and a brother, Arthur Hayes. Norma is survived by her children, William (Cecile) Mathes of Monroe, NC and Patricia (Peter Schanck) Moriarty of Edgewater; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at St. Philip Neri in Northport, NY on Monday, September 10, 2018. In lieu of flowers, pay an act of kindness forward in Norma's honor.

James Manning Barksdale, 84, a lifelong resident of Lothian, MD, passed away at his home on September 1, 2018.  Born on August 2, 1934 in Annapolis, Manning was a 1952 graduate of Southern High School.  He joined the U.S. Army where he was recruited to play on the Army’s official baseball team.  After leaving military service, Manning pursued his passion for farming.  He also became a field superintendant and part owner of Clevenger Corporation.  Manning was a member of Local Union 32 and a board member of both Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and the Anne Arundel County Farm Bureau.  An avid Orioles fan, he also enjoyed bowling and dancing.
	Manning was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mamie Barksdale and his loving nephew, George Barksdale, Jr.  He is survived by his devoted wife of 36 years, Margaret Moreland Churn Barksdale; one son, James R. “Chip” Churn of Annapolis, MD; two daughters, Sandy (Paul) Marshall of Harwood, MD and Sherry (Sean) Brewer of Tampa, FL; one brother, Jack Barksdale; two sisters, Nancy Barksdale and Janice Jackson; three grandchildren, Victoria Mackey, Sara Churn and J.R. Churn III, and several nieces and nephews.

Alice Kay Gonder Freeman, 76, a resident of Davidsonville, MD for forty-three years died on Saturday, September 1 at her home. Born on May 15, 1942, in Pennsylvania to the late Leonard and Mary Gonder, Alice was an administrative assistant to the director at the National Library Service, division for blind and physically handicapped, for 47 years. She was a member of Zion EC Church in Pitman, PA and in her spare time enjoyed flower gardening, doing the Washington Post crossword puzzles, neighborhood Bible study groups, loved all animals, especially her corgi dog, Nikki. Alice is survived by her husband, Chester Charles Freeman, whom she married on November 27, 1965, and her daughter, Mary Ann Freeman of Millersville, MD. She was preceded in death by her brother, Kenneth Charles Gonder. 

Two services are as follows:

A funeral service will be held at Zion E.C. Church, 247 Zion Church Rd., Pitman, PA on Saturday, September 15, from 10 am until her funeral service begins at 12 pm.  Interment immediately following the service in the church cemetery. 

A memorial service will be held at Davidsonville United Methodist Church, 819 Central Ave, Davidsonville, MD on Saturday, October 13 at 2 pm.

Coy Edward “Ed” Simmons, Jr., 72, a 15-year resident of Heritage Harbour in Annapolis and previously of Timonium, MD, passed away on August 31, 2018.  Born on April 18, 1946 in Washington, DC to the late Elenore and Coy Simmons, Sr., Ed served in the U.S. Navy before pursuing a career in telecommunications. He worked for AT&T, NCR and briefly at Northrop Grumman. Ed was a Ravens and Orioles fan and enjoyed playing golf.  He is survived by his wife, Frances Cook Simmons. Susann Boyd Locy, 74, a 50-year resident of Edgewater, passed away on Friday, August 31, 2018. Susann was born in Washington, DC to the late Thomas and Marguerite Gardiner on June 22, 1944. She was a graduate of Bladensburg High School. Susann owned and operated the Sign-A-Rama in Glen Burnie for 20-years. She attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, and Services at Chesapeake Christian Fellowship. Susann enjoyed horseback riding, scuba diving, traveling and refurbishing furniture for resale. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren. Susann is survived by her children, Robin (Jeff) Kidwell of West River, MD, Ronald (Lisa) Locy, Jr of Harper's Ferry, WV; five grandchildren, Randy Locy, Joshua Kidwell, Jordan Woodard, Dallas Locy and Anya Locy.  She is also survived by her sisters, Diana Pointek and JoAnne (Norman) Stone. Mark Edward Clifford, Sr., 52, a resident of Annapolis, MD, died on Wednesday, August 29  at his home. Born on January 31, 1966 in Annapolis, MD to the late Calvin W. and Gertrude A. Anna  “Maw Maw” Lare, 86, a resident of Mayo, MD for more than forty-seven years, died peacefully on Monday, August 27 at her home after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Born on April 20, 1932 in Cynthiana, KY, Anna graduated from Versailles High School. For nine years she worked at the Veterans Administration and the Central Intelligence Agency then became a homemaker for most of her life. Anna was a member of the Mayo Athletic Association and regularly attended St. Andrew the Fisherman Church. She enjoyed sewing, ceramics, reading and watching the Washington Redskins. Anna is survived by her husband of 66 years, Charles W. Lare; her children, Steve Lare and his Wife, Tammy, of Raleigh, NC, Gayle Haines and her husband, Jay, of Prince Frederick, MD, and Robbie Lare and his wife, Deanna, of Mayo, MD.  She is also survived by eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Friends are invited to celebrate Anna's life on Friday, August 31. Nicholas R. Garofalo, 89, beloved husband of Anne G. Garofalo; father of David, Gary, Donna, Nicholas Jr. and Kristine, passed to his heavenly rewards on August 26, 2018. Born in Springfield, MA, Nick resided most of his adult life in Fort Washington, MD. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1951. Nick had a very accomplished career, most notably his distinguished service to our nation while a member of the CIA.  Nick’s greatest accomplishments were being a loving husband to Anne, as well as a role model, mentor, and nurturing patriarch to their 5 children, 16 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.  Nick’s legacy of love to his family and friends was returned to him through admiration, emulation, love and respect from all who knew him. Scottie Tillison, a 10-year resident of Edgewater and previously of Mississippi, passed away August 26, 2018. He was born in Fayetteville, NC on December 10, 1971. Scottie will be remembered for how he lived. He enjoyed boating, traveling, cooking, beating the drums and dancing (even if he wasn't that good). Friends also knew that Scottie was always up for an adventure. Scottie most recently was an OTR (over the road) flat bed trucker with Prime, Inc. 

Scottie is survived by  his son, Bradley Tillison of Efland, NC; his mother, Gilda (Elliott) Woods  of Edgewater;  his father, Roger Tillison; two sisters, Michele Harris of Glen Burnie and Kasey (Travis)Coleman of Centerville, MD; three nieces, Sarah Harris, Rebecca Smith, and Teagan Coleman; a nephew, Tanner Coleman; and his long time girl friend, Jayme Forster.

Terence Albert Costa "Terry", a resident of the Annapolis/ West River area for more than 25 years and previously of Washington, DC and Arlington, VA, died suddenly on Saturday, August 25 at his home in West River. Born on April 2, 1955 in Washington, DC to the late John David and Carolyn Costa, Terry graduated from High Point High School and earned a BS degree from the University of Maryland. He had an extensive background in printing and print management, working in the private sector for many years before joining the Treasury Department in Washington, DC as a Senior Tax Analyst. Terry was his children's greatest fan and supporter; he was actively involved in his son's ice hockey and his daughter's lacrosse pursuits, attending all their games. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed boating, loved life, music, the Washington Capitals, Maryland Terps, Redskins and Nationals. Terry's infectious laugh, contagious humor, compassion and determination will be deeply missed. He is survived by his beloved wife, Molly Costa; his children, Peter and Clare Costa all of West River, MD; his brothers: his twin, Thomas of Carolina Shores, NC, Steven (Colleen) of Ocean View, DE and James (Ginger) Costa of Centreville, MD; his sisters, Nancy (Michael) Farran of Adelphi, MD and Joanna Costa of Odenton, MD. Friends are invited to celebrate Terry's life on Thursday, August 30 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at the Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, August 31 at 10:30 AM at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 Bestgate Rd., Annapolis, MD. Terry was a survivor of Multiple Myeloma and a previous heart attack. Lee Owen, "Sonny" 82, a 56 year resident of Annapolis, Maryland died peacefully, Friday, August 24 surrounded by his family and friends at the Mandrin Hospice House in Harwood.  He was born in Gambrills, Maryland, on April 20, 1936 to the late Lee T. Owen, Sr. and Ida Belle Owen.  He moved to Churchton where he attended elementary school and graduated from Southern High School in 1954. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S Air Force and served a tour in Japan.  He was honorably discharged in 1958 and worked until retirement at Green Spring and Embassy dairies. He married Shirley Barham in March, 1960 and moved to Annapolis in 1962 where they raised their family. Sonny is survived by his loving wife, Shirley, son David Owen and wife Amanda of Harwood,daughter  Debbie Allen and husband Karl of Lothian and three grandchildren, Ryan and Karlee Allen and Nate Owen.  He is also survived by his brother Carl Owen and his wife Carol of Annapolis and sisters Margaret Taylor and Linda Hardy of Annapolis and Joan Windland of Friendship. Sonny was a lifelong member of Eastport United Methodist Church, where he spent many hours volunteering.  He enjoyed reading, spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and taking great pride in his yard work. Friends are invited to celebrate Sonny's life on Friday, August 31 from 2 to 4 pm and 6pm to 8 pm at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 1, at 11:00 am at Eastport United Methodist Church, 926 Bay Ridge Ave, Annapolis, MD.  Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery, Annapolis.  If so desired, contributions may be made to Eastport United Methodist Church.
