John Staurulakis, 84, a 25-year resident of Boca Raton, FL and previously of Maryland, passed away on October 13, 2014 in Boca Raton after a 2-year illness.
 
Born on September 28, 1930 in Valley Stream, NY and raised in Crete, Greece, John received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree and a Masters of Business Administration degree from City College in New York. He served as a private in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
 
John began his career at the New York Public Service Commission and U.S. Independent Telephone Association, where he developed the framework for independent and cooperative companies to secure a stronger bargaining position at the telephone industry’s financial table. With the launch of his own company, John Staurulakis, Inc. (JSI) in 1962, he formalized and established his important role in ensuring that rural Americans would have access to reliable telephone service in their communities. John held many industry leadership positions including founder of OPASTCO in 1963. Among the many honors he received from across the nation, John was the first recipient of NTCA’s Associate Member Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999. He retired from JSI’s day-to-day operations in 1997 but continued as chairman until his passing.
 
John was preceded in death by his wife, Chresanthe (Chris), who died in 2009. He is survived by a sister, Mary Stamboulis of West Palm Beach, FL; three children, Manny (Bessie) Staurulakis of McLean, VA, Leo (Cheryl) Staurulakis of Annapolis, MD and Joanne (Jerry) Scheller of Boca Raton, FL; and eight grandchildren.
 
Friends are invited to John’s Life Celebration from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, October 19 at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD. His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 20 at Ss. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 2747 Riva Road, Annapolis, MD. Patricia D. Gallahan of Clinton, MD, 80, passed away at her home on Friday, October 10, 2014 after a brief battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, William Alton Gallahan, daughter, Patricia "Kathy" Canoles, sister, Sue Mona, brother, Frank Denison and parents, Evelyn Levrio and Dwight K. Pat is probably best known by many from seeing her around the farm. If you were lucky enough, you may have even heard her singing some of her favorite ditties from the kitchen as she whipped up her famous homemade ice cream. However, she may most widely be remembered by our community as the woman dressed from head to toe in her signature orange sweat-suit each October. Adorned with ghost and goblin accessories and rubber snakes in her socks, she excitedly welcomed each trailer load of pumpkin patch visitors to her home. The pumpkin patch was her masterpiece and she lived to create those memories each year for our guests. 

Still, for those who had the honor of knowing her personally, she was a practical jokester, a Halloween addict that never missed an opportunity to dress up (Regis, Hagrid and the Easter Bunny among her repertoire), a generous heart that always had a standby gift for any unexpected guest on Christmas morning, NEVER left the house without lipstick, loved to tell outrageous stories only to have her audience guess which one was actually true, had a potty mouth that would put a sailor to shame, recently tried to convince us that she started the hashtag phenomenon and just last week responded to everything with her latest favorite word, “epic”. She was many things to many people, but to us, she was the life of the party. 

We are comforted with thoughts of her being reunited with her soul mate, her “lambie pie”, her parents, brother and sister and her eldest daughter Kathy. In lieu of the Viking funeral she has been requesting for decades, we ask that you join us for a Celebration of Life service in her honor.

Patricia Carey, born on February 12, 1942 in Atlanta, Georgia passed away in Washington D.C. on Thursday, October 9, 2014. She was the second oldest of three children of James Jackson and Ida Mae Thornton (both deceased). She attended public schools in Atlanta, Georgia and attended Florida A & M University in Tallahassee, Florida. 

She resided in Ft. Washington, Maryland since 1984 and was a member of Ebenezer AME since 1985.
 Before retiring, Patricia spent much of her life dedicating herself to her work in the field of child care.
 She enjoyed ceramics, music, and traveling the world with her husband Spencer who was in the United States Army. 

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Spencer Carey, daughters Monica (Anthony) Carey Taylor, and Donna Carey, and son Derek Carey; grandchildren Brianna and Brandon Taylor and Dakota and Barnie Moore III and a host of other relatives and friends.

Dorothy May Newport, 92, a forty-nine year resident of Edgewater, died on October 9, 2014 of natural causes at Household of Angels Assisted Living in Gambrills. Born on December 5, 1921 in Bowling Green, VA to the late Lonnie and Esther Whitaker. Dottie was a stay at home mother and homemaker. She enjoyed playing the guitar, singing and writing country music, bingo and slot machines. In addition to her parents, Dottie was preceded in death by her husband, Gothern “Gene” Newport; her brother, Lonnie Whittaker, Jr. and a sister, Mildred McClamb. She is survived by four children, Teresa Edwards, Shirley Godbout and Gene Newport, all of Edgewater and Gothern “Beau” Newport, Jr. of Davidsonville; a sister, Virginia Merry of Waldorf and 11 grandchildren, Michael Newport of Glen Burnie, Maximillian and Christopher Marinelli, Robert and David Armstrong, Gene W. James Henry Owens, “Applejack” or “Jimmy”, 77, a lifelong resident of Harwood, Maryland, passed away on October 8, 2014 at Larkin Chase Nursing Home after a 12 year battle with Alzheimer ’s disease. Jimmy was born February 5, 1937 to James Henry Owens, “Applejack” or “Jimmy”, 77, a lifelong resident of Harwood, Maryland, passed away on October 8, 2014 at Larkin Chase Nursing Home after a 12 year battle with Alzheimer ’s disease. Jimmy was born February 5, 1937 to the late William and Frances Owens in the family home in Harwood, MD. He was a 1957 graduate of the Wiley H. Bates High school and served his country in the US Army. Jimmy was a proud and very disciplined military man, and met many soldiers who became “brothers” while serving and after his military service. He worked many years in and out of state as a construction laborer and builder for local companies in Maryland. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus South County Council #8251, and became a 4th degree Knight in May 1987. Jimmy was an avid racecar driver and took part in many competitions at Maryland International Raceway in Budds Creek, MD and Capitol Raceway in Crofton. He also enjoyed playing sports and hunting. Thomas James “Tommy” McFarland III, a 42-year resident of Annapolis and Davidsonville, MD, died October 6 at his home after battling pancreatic cancer for more than 6 years. He was 52. Born on August 16, 1962 in Maryland to Joan Carol Spicer and the late Thomas James McFarland, Tommy graduated from South River High School and served in the U.S. Marines. Following his military service, Tommy worked in the Uniform Division of the U.S. Secret Service then as a Sergeant for the Anne Arundel County Police Department. He was a member of FOP Lodge 70 and the Riva Trace Baptist Church. Tommy enjoyed attending his daughter’s sports activities, hunting, fishing and participating in Civil War re-enactments.
 
Tommy is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Mara McFarland; two children, Maija McFarland and William McFarland, both of Annapolis; his mother, Joan McFarland of Davidsonville and one sister, Karen Mackey and her husband, Kevin of Arnold.

Gerald Paul Calame, 83, a forty-eight year resident of Annapolis, died on October 6, 2014 at Anne Arundel Medical Center due to congestive heart failure. 

Born on November 27, 1930 in Le Locle, Switzerland, Gerald emigrated to the United States at age 5 and became a naturalized U.S. citizen at age 18. He earned a B.A. in physics from the College of Wooster in 1953 and a Ph.D. in physics from Harvard in 1960. Gerald performed nuclear reactor core designs for U.S. Navy submarines and destroyers while working at the General Electric Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Schenectady, NY from 1958-1961, and he was a physics professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY from 1961-1965. He moved to Annapolis in 1966 and was a physics professor at the U.S. Naval Academy for 34 years, including serving as the chairman of the physics department for 4 years. He retired from the Naval Academy in 2000, and was later named Professor Emeritus of physics in 2005. His interests included hiking, running, watching football, and reading books on science fiction, military history, and comparative religion. In his later years, he enjoyed taking college-level courses on history, archeology, astronomy, and religion through DVDs and the internet.
 
Gerald is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jocelyn F. Calame; a son, Jeffrey P. Calame of Annapolis; a daughter-in-law, Lynn Stonebraker of Annapolis; a sister, Mary Ballard of Lady Lake, FL and a nephew, Ken Ballard of Vallejo, CA.
 
A celebration of his life will be held in the spring of 2015.

Tara Lynne Wolfe, 57, a resident of Severna Park, passed away from pancreatic cancer on October 5, 2014 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Tara was born on June 11, 1957 in Annapolis, MD to Robert and Nancy Wolfe. She was self employed, owning her own electrolysis business for 30 years, and was an avid antique collector. She was a wonderful mother, sister and daughter. She was preceded in death by her sister Tamara Wolfe. In addition to her parents, Tara is survived by her son Collin Wolfe, two sisters; Donna Wolfe of Severna Park and Twila DeVei of California, two nieces; Amber Renee Wolfe of Severna Park and Ava Loren DeVei of California. Wilma Joyce Reich Hoffman, 83, a 42-year resident of Edgewater, MD, died October 3, 2014 at her home following a 9-year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Born on November 7, 1930 in St. Louis, MO, Joyce graduated from Mehlville High School in St. Louis in 1948 and attended the University of Houston. 

In 1951, Joyce became a Navy Officer’s wife and traveled extensively. During her husband’s career, Joyce served as President of the Officer’s Wives Club, coordinated numerous charity programs at several duty stations and supported wives and families of helicopter pilots serving during the Viet Nam conflict. She and her husband sponsored numerous midshipmen from the U.S. Naval Academy. Joyce also worked in various secretarial positions for companies including Safeway and Kelly Girls, and retired as the Office Manager for Dr. Roger Harris.
 
Joyce participated in Sunday School and Bible Studies and was a choir member at Trinity United Methodist Church in Annapolis. She excelled at every undertaking and loved to knit, sew and garden. She also enjoyed water aerobics, reading, crossword puzzles, traveling with her women’s bowling league and volunteering at the Navy Dispensary.
 
Joyce was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Reich, and her mother and stepfather, Marguerite and Shelton Doerksen. She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 63 years, CDR Merle L. Hoffman, USN (Ret.); one son, Merle L. Hoffman, Jr. (Alice) of Naples, FL; two daughters, Pamela L. Hoffman-Hanna (David) of Annapolis, MD and Sherrell L. Hoffman-Chaires of Ohio; four grandchildren, Merle L. Hoffman III (Sara), M. Brook Hanna-Fowler (Doug), Carolyn M. Hanna and Kyle B. Chaires; and three great-grandchildren.
 
A Memorial Service will be held for Joyce at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 1, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1300 West Street, Annapolis, MD 21401. Interment will be private. Robert E. “Bob” Mack, age 79, a 20-year resident of Annapolis, MD and previously of Upper Marlboro, MD from 1972-94, died on Wednesday, October 1, 2014, at Brightview Assisted Living Facility in Edgewater, MD following a brief illness. Born on May 26, 1935 in Washington, D.C., Bob attended Anacostia High School, where he was an active member in the Civil Air Patrol. After graduating from Anacostia in 1954 he then joined the Air Force, where he served on active duty for 2 years then in the Air National Guard until 1956 when he was called back to active duty during the Korean War. After completing his service to our country, Bob joined the Prince George’s County Fire Department as a volunteer, and later became a paid member, reaching the level of Sergeant. He also served as an EMT. Among the many fire stations where he worked, he served most of his time at the Brandywine and Baden Fire Departments. He also was a valued member of the P.G. County Fire Department’s training academy in Cheltenham, MD. After retiring from the fire department in 1986, Bob re-joined the P.G. County Government, working for the Department of Environmental Resources for another 10 years until his retirement. Prior to becoming ill, Bob and his wife, JoAnn, enjoyed cruising their power boat around the various waterways of the Chesapeake. During the 1980’s, he helped campaign for various politicians in Prince Georges County. He coached girls’ softball, his daughter’s volleyball team and assisted with his son’s basketball team. He served for several years as the EMT for the Frederick Douglass High School varsity football games, where his children attended High School. He was on the Board at Heritage Harbor, where he and his wife lived for 12 years and he headed up the Heritage Harbor Dance Club for several years. Bob also volunteered at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He had his hands in many more community projects as well. Bob was preceded in death by his wife, of 49 years, JoAnn Echard Mack, in June of 2006. Bob leaves behind two children, Rick Mack and his wife, Kym of Chesapeake Beach, MD and Meg McAbee and her husband, Jay of Huntingtown, MD; four grandchildren, Cameron Stocks McAbee, Hannah Mack, Garrett and Austin McAbee; a brother, Richard “Jerry” Mack of Mechanicsville, MD and a sister, Sandy Berman of Battle Mountain, NV. John A. Campbell, a 26-year resident of Bowie, Md and previously of Beltsville, Md, died on Tuesday, September 30, 2014.

Known to family and friends as Allen, he was born on April 14, 1965 in Annapolis, Md to Howard and Bonnie Campbell. Allen was a self employed electrician and cabinet maker. He was an animal lover and enjoyed playing bass, fishing, crabbing, music and cooking on the grill.

He is survived by his wife, Lynn M. Campbell, his siblings, Connie Mahaney of Churchton, Md, Howard Campbell of St. Leonard, Md and Steven Campbell of Shady Side, Md.

Betty Louise “Betty Lou” Hayes, 75, a lifetime resident of Annapolis, died on September 27, 2014 at the Mandrin Inpatient Care Center in Harwood, MD. Born on August 7, 1939 in Annapolis to the late Rudy and Mary Lou Miller, Betty Lou received a B.S. degree from Towson University, an M.Ed. degree from the University of Maryland and an M.B.A. degree from Loyola University. She worked for the Anne Arundel Board of Education for 32 years, serving first as a teacher for 4 years and then as a principal for the remainder of her career. She later worked for 10 years at AIG as a Senior Financial Representative.
 
Betty Lou was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Annapolis and a member of the school’s Alumni Association and School Board. She was recognized as one of the St. Mary’s Distinguished Alumni. She was also a member of the Severn School Board and President of MAESA as well as the Calvert County Jaycees. Betty Lou enjoyed Bible Study, dancing, yoga, traveling, swimming, water skiing, kayaking and spending time in Bethany Beach. Most of all, she loved being with her family, especially her grandchildren.
 
Betty Lou is survived by her husband, William Hayes; one son, Steven Hayes of Severna Park; and two grandchildren, Luke and Lily Hayes.

Phillip Roy Becker, Sr., 89, a resident of Davidsonville, MD, died on September 26, 2014 at his home. He was born April 6, 1925 in Baltimore, MD, to the late Edward and Emily Becker. Mary Margaret “Taffy” Mohr, 84, of Heritage Harbour in Annapolis and previously of Cheverly, passed away on September 26. Born in Baltimore to the late Walter D. and Mary Noppenberger Rafferty, Taffy graduated from the Institute of Notre Dame and the Bard Avon School of Business. Taffy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She loved playing games, watching sports and spending summers in Ocean City.
 
Taffy was preceded in death by her loving husband of 53 years, Larry Mohr, and her brother, Joseph Rafferty. She is survived by her son, Stanley Mohr of Annapolis; three daughters, Lucy (Jack) Kaeufer of Ocean Pines; Cindy (Dwight) Haldeman of Nashville, TN, Clare (Ty) Brady of Annapolis; and three grandsons, Christopher, Matthew and Tyler Brady.
 
Friends are invited to Taffy’s Life Celebration from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, September 29 at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 30 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 N. Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD 21401.
 
Donations may be made to St. Mary’s Hospital/Visitation Ministry, 109 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis, MD 21401.

Cindy M. Griffith Dove, a 1-year resident of Pasadena and previously of La Plata, died peacefully on Thursday, September 25 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center.
 
Born April 15, 1961, she attended Southern Senior High School. Cindy enjoyed writing poems and songs, spending time with family and friends and watching reality T.V. shows.
 
She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Tommy Dove; three children, Jennifer Kirkland, John LiCalzi and Jason LiCalzi; her sister/best friend, Gale Phillips; two brothers, John Griffith, Jr. and Ron Frey; her cousin and best friend, Bryan Iversen; nine grandchildren, Maitlin, Savannah, Coniar, Madison, Baby John, Gianna, Dominic, Bentley and Isabella; and one great-grandchild on the way.
