John Wesley McIntyre
 went home to be with the Lord and the Angels on Tuesday, July 17, 2012, after battling a stroke, and brain surgery.
 
John was born on April 6, 1949 in North Carolina, but was raised in Northwest, Washington, DC to his late parents Rosa Lee Overton, and Joseph McIntyre. He was born amongst five siblings. Clarence Overton, Steve McIntyre, Garland McIntyre, Lloyd McIntyre, and his late sister Barbara McIntyre.
 
John attended the DC public school system, and after his years in school he began working for Safeway as a Meat Cutter , up until March 1990. In 1998 he began his new career as a bus driver with Prince George's County Public Schools.
 
He met an began dating his wife, Barbara Z. McIntyre in 1979, and they later married in 1998. John was a very hard working man with a wonderful personality and he was very much a people person. John was also given the nickname "Shayne" by some of his family members and "Mack" by his close friends. John's fun-loving personality is what endeared him to relatives, co-workers, friends, and strangers. He always found a way to make people laugh and smile.
 
He had a passion for playing music, cutting hair, and loved to do handywork. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife Barbara Z. McIntyre, his sons Maurice McIntyre, and Kevin Coachman and his daughters Angela Robinson, Cortella Robinson, Michelle Jules, Tonya Robinson, and Erika McIntyre; his stepchildren Maurice, Anthony , Leonard Randolph Jr., Sandra , and Deborah ; His daughter in law, Sabrina McIntyre; and his son in law Sheldon Jules; and 47 grandchildren, and a host of great grandchildren, relatives, and two very close friends, Frank Houston and Alonzo Jackson. A special nephew Darren McIntyre. Relatives nad friends are invited to John's Life Celebration of Friday July 27 from 9am until time of services at 11am at Southern Missionary Baptist Chruch, 4444 Old Branch ave., Temple Hills, MD. Catherine Helvin Capossela, age 94, an eighteen year resident of Heritage Harbour and formerly of Oxon Hill, MD, died on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at The Annapolitan Assisted Living facility of natural causes.
 
Born on October 19, 1917 in Long Island, NY, Catherine graduated from Eastern High School and Strayer Business College, both located in Washington, D.C., and then worked at the Library of Congress as an Executive Secretary. She was a member of All Hallows Episcopal Parish in Davidsonville, MD and the Surratt Society in Clinton, MD.
 
Catherine was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard J. Capossela, who died in April of 1990.
 
She is survived by a son, John F. (Jill) Capossela of Weatherly, PA; a daughter, Susan C. (Gus) Perrotta of Annapolis, MD; three grandsons, David L. (Michele) Capossela of Gainesville, VA, Michael A. Perrotta of Pasadena, MD and Daniel L. (Julie) Perrotta of New Market, VA; she is also survived by eight great-grandchildren.

On Tuesday, July 17, 2012; the beloved husband of Veronica Plater; father of Nikki and Derrick; brother of Zenobia Lancaster, Dr. Raynell Johnson, William J. Plater III and Darrick Plater. Melvin Ceasar Mack, Sr., 61, of Washington, DC and previously of Alexandria, VA and Colorado Springs, CO, died July 17 following a heart attack. Born on August 22, 1951 in Washington, DC, Melvin attended Central High School in Capitol Heights, MD and received his GED in 1970. He later attended Pikes Peak Community College where he studied Autobody Repair and Refinishing. 

From 1970 to 1984, Melvin served in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of Sergeant with assignments at bases in Georgia, Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, South Korea and Germany. He received the Army Service, National Defense, Armed Forces Expeditionary and Good Conduct Medals and the Oversees Service Ribbon. From 1984 to 1992, Melvin lived in Colorado Springs where he worked as a custodian and floor technician/janitor. In 1995, he moved to Virginia and worked as a gardener at Fort Belvoir until 2003. Melvin was an expert card player and enjoyed playing sports, especially bowling and volleyball. His favorite sports team was the Washington Redskins.
 
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Vincent and Evelyn Elizabeth Gray Mack, one brother, Charles Mack, one sister, Diane Walton and his grandparents, Clarence and Mary Gray. 

He is survived by two sons, Melvin C. Mack, Jr. and Alexander Mack both of Colorado Springs, CO; two daughters, Diana S. Oliver of Colorado Springs and Christine K. Brouch of Bowie, MD; five brothers, Vincent (Judy) Gray and Sylvester L. (Marie) Lindsay of Washington, DC, Clarence Mack of Laurel, MD, Stanley Mack of Landover, MD and Emmanuel (Shirley) Mack of Waldorf; two sisters, Rebecca Yvonne Neville of Silver Spring, MD and Jeanette A. (Sherman) Brown of Hyattsville, MD; and four grandchildren, Jaeden J. and Kiersten A. Oliver, Melvin C. Mack III and Alana M. King-Mack all of Colorado Springs.

Zula Maria Proffitt, a longtime resident of Edgewater, passed away on Saturday, July 14, in Columbia, MD. She was 95. Born on August 15, 1916 in Saint Francis, ME, she attended school there and moved to Washington, DC during World War II to work for the US Army’s Signal Corps. She and her husband Owen were married in 1949. She worked for the State of Maryland in the Office of the Comptroller as a secretary; the job from which she retired.
 
Zula was a prize-winning quilter who loved reading, cooking, and baking, especially pies. She and her husband loved dancing and travelling together.
 
Mrs. Proffitt is survived by her husband of sixty-three years, Owen Proffitt; two daughters, Diane Greene of Laurel and Monica Baig of Manhattan, NY; and a niece, Inez Ernst of Potomac. Services private. Interment Lakemont Memorial Gardens. Please sign the online guestbook to the left.

Helen Marie Homa, “Sis”, age 88, a twenty-two-year resident of Annapolis, MD., and formerly of Pottsville, PA., died on July 14, 2012 in Annapolis, MD., of natural causes. Born in Pottsville on September 27, 1923 to the late Steve W. and Helen Homa, Helen graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Master’s Degree in English. For more than twenty-five years, Helen taught in English Department at Pottsville High School and ultimately served as the head of the department. A member of St. Patrick Parish in Pottsville, St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Annapolis and the Republican Party, Helen was an active bridge player who enjoyed reading, loved animals, especially horses, and of course shopping. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Leonard S. Homa and Mary O. Homa, both of Annapolis, MD, two nephews and a niece and their families. Friends may call at St. Patrick Parish, 319 Mahantongo St., Pottsville, PA., on Tuesday, August 7 from 11:00a.m. until a Mass of Christian Burial is celebrated at noon. Interment will be private. Patricia “Pat” Kay Diehl, of Upper Marlboro, passed away on Saturday, July 14, in Lanham after battling lung cancer for several months. She was 67. Born in Maysville, KY, she attended school in Lexington, graduating from Henry Clay High School in 1962. She continued her education in Washington, DC at the George Washington University, where she was president of Kappa Kappa Gamma, and graduated in 1966. In 1967, she married James “Jim” Diehl. Pat was a military wife, mother, and homemaker and was once appointed ‘Kentucky Colonel’ by the Governor of Kentucky. 

Pat was a director of music, held the position of choir director at Hope Presbyterian Church in Mitchellville for over 25 years, and was a member of the Southern Maryland Gospel Choir in Lexington Park. She enjoyed gospel music, singing, playing the piano and the flute, participating in choir and the marching band, teaching, mentoring, and encouraging committed performers to do their best. She also loved taking care of and nurturing her frail cat, Tommy Two.
 
Pat is preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Maude Dryden.
 
Mrs. Diehl is survived by her husband, Jim Diehl; Capt. Bill (Nok) Diehl of Arlington, VA and John (Jenn) Diehl of Salt Lake City, UT; four grandchildren, Joseph Diehl of Asheville, NC, Jackson, Henry, and Rainey Diehl, all of Salt Lake City, UT. A memorial service will be held on Friday July 20 at 10am at Hope Presbyterian Church, 1100 Enterprise Road, Mitchellville 20721. Interment Fairview Cemetery, in Westfield, NJ at a later date. Margaret F King, of Washington D.C. passed away on Friday, July 13, 2012 at the age of 92. Born in Washington D.C., she was the youngest child of the late James E Branson and Mary Elizabeth (Mamie Joy) Branson. Most of her life was spent in the Anacostia (S.E.) section of the District. She was very proud to be a 4th generation Washingtonian.
 
Besides her parents and siblings, she was predeceased by Spouse, James M King Sr., Son James M King Jr., one granddaughter and one great-grandson. She is survived by son and his wife, Frank D and Pam King, Sr., Daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia (Patsy) and Barry Van Vleet, Margaret E and Donald D Stithem, and Christine and Jeffrey D Wencel. She also leaves 9 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews to mourn her passing.

 Too numerous to count are the people that she took into her heart. She cherished the relationships that she had with family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Her love for everyone was unconditional.
 
Her first job was at Rice’s Bakery helping to prepare the pastries and donuts. Later, she was employed by the Ayres sisters to work behind the “soda fountain” at Ayers Pharmacy on Nichols Ave, S.E. (now M.L. King, J.Ave). During her 43 years there, she went from soda jerk to clerk to drug clerk to pharmacy assistant to store manager.
 
She was given many challenges in her life. But with the love and support from family and friends and her unwavering faith in God, she always faced them with grace and dignity.
 
Margaret was the ultimate die-hard Redskins fan. Whether her team had a winning or losing season, she was right there cheering them on. Family and friends knew not to call her when her beloved team was playing. You would find burgundy and gold in every room in her apartment. 

She loved to travel (it didn’t matter to where), read ,complete the word finds, getting flowers (not growing them since she did not have a green thumb) and in later years to feed and watch her “children” (the various birds, squirrels, and Harry the groundhog) that played in the back yard. But what she cherished the most was her family and friends. 

She will forever be a part of us, staying in our hearts and memories.

Sharon Lund Pailthorp, 66, a 33-year resident of Davidsonville and formerly of Bowie, died July 12 at her home. She was born on February 21, 1946 in Washington, DC to the late Arthur and Frances Lund and graduated from the University of Maryland in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business. 

Sharon was a buyer and store manager for 16 years at the former Garfinckels Department Stores in Seven Corners and Tysons Corner, VA and Landover, MD. She was a member of St. Anne’s Parish in Annapolis. Sharon enjoyed cooking, swimming and snorkeling and had a passion for art and early American history.

She is survived by her husband, James Pailthorp; her two daughters, Ann and Ingrid Pailthorp of Annapolis and her brother, Arthur Lund, Jr. of Indian Head, MD.

On Wednesday, July 11, 2012; served as a Hospital Apprentice 2nd Class in the US Navy during WWII and then as a Police Officer for the Supreme Court, retiring after 31 years of service; the beloved husband of the late Martha Cecilia Cross for 64 years; father of of Leonard Allen (Catherine) Cross and Linda Lauziere; grandfather of Kimberly (David) Downs, Kristen Lauziere and Robin (Jonathan) Patterson and the late Dennis Allan Cross; great-grandfather of Autumn and Drew Patterson and Aiden Downs. Frank J. Abend, 92, a 66-year resident of Davidsonville died at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home on July 11, 2012.
 
Born February 14, 1920 in Baltimore, he served in the United States Army during WWII. Frank was the owner of Frank Abend Landscaping, Co. He was a member of Ruritan Club, Annapolis Elks Lodge 622, American Legion Post 226, Glen Burnie Moose Lodge and the Farm Bureau. His hobbies included taking care of his dog, gardening and watching boxing on television.
 
Frank was predeceased by his wife, Juliet "Pat" Abend, who died December 30, 2011; and 13 siblings.
 
He is survived by a son, Steve Abend of Davidsonville; a daughter, Sandy Collins of Albuquerque, NM; and one sister, Lil Cox of Baltimore.

Teresa Ann “Terri” Howes, 57, of Annapolis and previously of Churchton, died July 10 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. She was born on May 14, 1955 to the late John W. and Mary G. Howes. She graduated from Southern High School, attended several trade schools and worked in ticket sales at Bow Tie Cinemas. 

Terri was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church and its Women’s Guild. She was a talented pianist who also enjoyed crocheting, reading and, most of all, spending time with family and friends. Her dearest friend was her cat, Thomasina, whom she adored.
 
In addition to her parents, Terri was preceded in death by her brother, John W. Howes, Jr., step-father, Don Marshall and step-sister, Debbie Nicholson. She is survived by two brothers, Thomas G. Howes of Hermitage, TN and Edward L. Howes of Delaware; one sister, Marie M. Krause of Annapolis; two step-sisters, Donna Prochazka of West River and Carol Marshall of Florida and many nieces and nephews.

Katherine Thayer, 87, a 50-year resident of Hillcrest Heights, died July 9 at her home. She was born on August 7, 1924 in Greensboro, NC to the late James Clarence and Dora Ann Crutchfield. She graduated from Greensboro High School.
 
Katherine was a charter member of the United Methodist Church of the Redeemer in Temple Hills. She was also a member of the Temple Hills Garden Club. In addition to gardening, she enjoyed painting and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
 
She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett E. Thayer, whom she married in 1945 and who died in 1973, and by her four sisters and three brothers. She is survived by two sons, Reverend Doctor David E. (Renne) Thayer of Annapolis and Michael J. Thayer of Davidsonville; one daughter, Nancy E. (Jack) Lee of Springfield, VA; six grandchildren, Christopher (Casey) Thayer of Annapolis, Jason (Shannon) Lee of Sumter, SC, Autumn Thayer of Newton, PA, Beth Thayer of Glen Burnie, Jennifer Thayer of Davidsonville and Shannon Harrell of Springfield, VA; and four great-grandchildren.

Mary Carroll Lee, 87, of Edgewater died on July 9, 2012 as a result of respiratory failure. Mrs. Lee, a long time resident of Edgewater was the daughter of C. Carroll Lee, who ran J.F. Johnson Lumber Company for decades. Mrs. Lee loved cooking, sewing, knitting, gardening, and enjoyed seeing live country music. She enjoyed watching over the family as her beloved father did. She loved Ocean City and its people walking the boardwalk and beaches. It was her and her husband’s special place of love. 

She is perhaps best known for her continuing and ardent support of Lee Airport in the heart of the family's farm. Mrs. Lee loved seeing the airplanes and she enjoyed that pilots were able to come and go from our little airport.
 
Lee Airport was started by her father in the 1930's as a grass runway parallel to Route 2. The Airport's operations have continued only because of significant financial support she provided despite imposition of severe security restrictions following September 11, 2001. 

Recently Mrs. Lee joined in founding the Lee Farms Conservancy. The Conservancy consists of representatives from neighboring communities. The Conservancy oversees commercial development of the Lee property along Route 2 in Edgewater under comprehensive guidelines negotiated with the local communities. The Conservancy's creation was the lynch-pin to gain support for commercial rezoning and development of 30 acres of the Lee property. The South River Federation recently commended The Village at Lee Airpark for its environmental sensitivity. 

The Lee property stretches from Southdown Road to Collinson Lee Lane and has remained in the Lee family since the early 1800's. Mrs. Lee's father rejected selling family property and entered into long term leases. The first such leases were to Green Spring Dairy, now the site of Walgreen's and Sonic Hamburgers, Farmer's National Bank (BB&T) and Annapolis Bank and Trust (PNC) to Edgewater in the 60's.
 
In 1989 the Airport was the focus of significant controversy over expansion. After public hearings that packed the Arundel Center's Council room the Airport faced closure. It was her decision in 1989 to join in covenants with the local communities and the Parlett family, then running Lee Airport, that continued operations at the public use Airport. Lee Airport was started by her father in the 1930's as a grass runway parallel to Route 2 and planes were based there during World War 2. 

Mrs. Lee is survived by her husband Harvey of 65 years, her son Carroll Vansant Lee, her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Lee, four grandchildren; Ross Wendell Jones, Richard Lee Jones, Sarah Elizabeth Jones, Isabella Maria Lee) and four great grandchildren Westin Wendell Jones, Chloe Nicole Jones, Alexis Jones, Connor Lee Jones.
 
Friends are invited to Mrs. Lee's Life Celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, July 12, at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd, Edgewater, where her funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 13. Interment Cedar Bluff Cemetery.

DENNIS L. (BOB) GREGG, of Annapolis, MD, died on July 6, 2012, after an extended illness from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Bob was born August 7, 1936, in Charlotte, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents, Athleen and Robert Gregg of Charlotte, NC. He graduated from Central High School in Charlotte, NC, Charlotte College in Charlotte, NC and from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Bob was President and founder of Gregg Construction, a commercial interior construction firm, located in Annapolis, MD. He most enjoyed playing golf, skiing and boating. He was also an avid Washington Redskins fan and enjoyed gardening and other outdoor activities.
 
Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Elaine Gregg, stepdaughter, Kelly Urgo and husband, David, mother-in-law, Chris Archibald, sister-in-law, Ariane Haring and husband, Frank, sister-in-law Angela Roberts and husband, Eddie, along with three nieces and one nephew.

Donald G. Tyson of Heritage Harbour in Annapolis, passed away on Friday July 6, 2012. Don was born in Jacksonville, FL on February 26, 1924. After attending school there, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, serving with the 2nd Marine Division in the first wave in Tarawa, Saipan, and the Battle of Tinian. While on board to go to Okinawa, Don was selected for the V-12 program at Dartmouth College. When the program was cancelled, he continued his education in Atlanta, GA and graduated from the Woodrow Wilson College of Law. He was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Georgia.
 Don's career was with McNeil Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. He was a 20-year member of the Annapolis Yacht Club, an avid sailor, bridge player, tennis player, and golfer. He served on the Board of Directors in Heritage Harbour and organized the Heritage Harbour model boat club.
 Don is survived by his wife of 33 years, Pat; his four children, Donald Jr., Susan, James, and Jeffrey from his first wife, Ruth, and six grandchildren. Don's Life Celebration gathering will be held on Friday, July 13, from 4 to 6pm, at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. Interment will be private. Charles "Chuck" August Golch, 72, died at his home in Davidsonville on July 5, 2012.
 Born September 25, 1939 in Wheeling, WV to the late Stanley Charles and Rose Golch, he was a former Wheeling Police Officer and Director of Safety and Security for Branch Electric. Chuck achieved his lifelong dream as a high school football coach at South River High School with Coach Summey and the late Coach Henne. He was a member and Associate Pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bowie. Other memberships included the Wheeling Elks Lodge and Wheeling FOP Lodge.
 He was the beloved husband of Ruby Golch; father of Debbie (John) Persinger of Proctor, WV, Donna (Gary) Affagato of New Bedford, PA, Chuck (Lexi) Golch of Federalsburg and Courtney (Kevin) McHale of Davidsonville; grandfather of Corey, Joshua, Justin, Lynn, Carrie, Logan, Sami, Brandon, Emily, Ruby, Morgan, Nikki, Joey, Annie and the late Nicholas; great grandfather of Grace; and brother of Rosalie (Bill) Schoenfeld of Dayton, OH.

Mildred Dianne Morris, 70, a 42 year resident of Saunders Point in Mayo, Maryland passed away on July 5, 2012 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Loving wife of 51 years to William (Bill) Morris, beloved mother of Angela Morris-Banger, devoted mother-in-law of Randy Banger, Sr., doting grandmother of Randy Banger, Jr. (Alexandra) and Amy Banger, adored great-grandmother of Molly Banger and Whitney McCall. She is survived by her sisters; Betty Jo Dent (Joe), Alice MacNamara, Frances Berry (Joe) and Grayce Madison. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews whom she loved very much. Preceded in death by her parents, Arthur Clifton and Mary Fornette Madison as well as her brother, Arthur Clifton Madison, Jr., her sister, Elizabeth Ann (Dolly) Bradshaw, her sister-in-law, Patricia Madison, her father-in-law, William Morris, Jr. and her mother-in-law, Madeline Morris. Over the years, she cherished her relationships with her friends, neighbors and co-workers. 
Dianne was a loving, caring and giving woman. A devout Lutheran, she maintained a strong faith all of her life. Her 41 year relationship with St. Paul Lutheran Church, Annapolis, Maryland, was steadfast and she gave freely of her time and resources. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Altar Guild as well as a volunteer for vacation bible school and the church’s Mission of Orphan Grain Train, which collects, sorts and ships desperately needed materials to people in crises around the world. She obtained great satisfaction working with other church members on the Orphan Grain Train project. Dianne also volunteered at the South County Senior Center in Edgewater, Maryland and she often spoke of the great group of people she worked with. She was a member of the American Business Women’s Association for many years. She generously contributed to many charities and organizations.
After working in banking for over 20 years, she retired from The Columbia Bank, Greenbelt, Maryland in 2003. She enjoyed flower gardening, reading and family gatherings. One of her most enjoyable pastimes was sitting on her back porch watching the many species of birds she attracted to her yard. After going through the certification process, her hard work paid off when her residence was certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a Certified Wildlife Habitat. 
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude for the care and attention provided by the Oncology Unit staff at Anne Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis Oncology Center, Dr. Glen Gibson and Hospice of the Chesapeake.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 31 Rowe Blvd., Annapolis, MD 21401 on Saturday, July 21, 2012 at 10:00 a.m.
A reception will follow at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 515 Loch Haven Road, Edgewater, MD 21037.
