Frances Bernice Patterson (Aldridge), fondly known as “Bertsie”, daughter of the late Jennie and Zebedee Aldridge, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2020. She was 95 years young.

Bernice was born and raised in Brunswick County, Virginia where she was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church. She studied at St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Virginia for a short time and later moved to Washington, DC to live with her eldest sister Grace. After relocating to DC, she was introduced to her husband, the late Leonard Patterson “Bill/Pat”. They married in August 1949 and were blessed with three children.

Throughout the years, Bernice continued to attend church regularly and found a new church home, Unity Baptist Church, Washington, DC, which she joined in March 1989. Bernice was a very active member and her church family remained an important part of her life up until her death.

Bernice had a passion for cooking, entertaining, traveling and spoiling her grandchildren. Most will remember her for the fried chicken, potato salad, Brunswick Stew, and her homemade vanilla ice cream. Bernice would task her children with stirring the cream constantly to make sure it didn’t stick to the pan.	She also enjoyed preparing and selling dinners out of her home. One thing was guaranteed, you never went hungry at the Patterson residence.

Bernice didn’t let too much grass grow under her feet. She, Bill and the family frequently went back to her hometown to visit family and friends. She made a point to attend Piney Grove’s annual homecoming up until her mobility declined. She also enjoyed visiting her father-in-laws beach home in Mill Point Shores, Chaptico, Maryland. It was extra exciting because they had a couple of slot machines at a nearby clubhouse. She especially liked to play the nickel machines.

Bernice, without thinking twice, would gather with friends and family for an evening of Whist (card game) which transitioned to Bid Whist as the years went on. Bill was typically her partner, but if she wasn’t pleased with his card playing techniques, watch out, she sought a new partner and laughed about it all night.

Bernice enjoyed playing games of chance. She and Bill would occasionally sneak off to Atlantic City & Foxwoods Casino with cousins, Ernest & Wannetta and they would spend hours enjoying each other’s company.

Cruising and traveling to cities such as New York City, St. Louis and Las Vegas were also something Bernice enjoyed. She always traveled with Bill, but occasionally, the kids and grandkids went too. Bernice affectionately reminisced about her trip to Germany. Her son, Eric, invited her to tour Germany and Italy while he was completing an assignment overseas. She had an awesome time and spoke about how that was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Bernice was most passionate about her children and grandchildren. She absolutely adored her grandchildren as they simply lit up her world. When the grandkids would visit, she always asked them if they were hungry. Usually they were, making their parents look bad, but she was determined to fix them a favorite dish while watching an episode of the Wheel of Fortune. She also made sure the meal ended with something sweet which was grandpop’s job. She was a woman who enjoyed life and always wanted to bring joy to others. “Bertsie’s humor and loving spirit will be truly missed.

Bernice was preceded in death by her husband Bill and daughter, Karen Renee Gibson. She is survived by her children Leonard Eric Patterson of Brandywine, Maryland, Kim P. Ross of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, grandchildren, Eric D. Patterson (Michele), Jaren R. Patterson (Candice), Christopher E. Gibson, Erica D. Patterson, Meghan V. Patterson, Daniel E. Ross, great-granddaughter Kaya Patterson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

.Irma G. Guy of Annapolis, MD passed away at her home on July 12, 2020. Irma was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth H. Guy, Jr and her beloved sister Catherine Kramer. She is survived by her three daughters, Nancy (Richard) Guy Freeman, Patricia Guy Mahaffey, Judith (Doug) Guy Gardner; five grandchildren, Travis Mahaffey, Morgan Mahaffey, Emily Freeman, Josie Gardner and Nicole (Matt) Popen; and two great-grandsons, Casey and Sam.
Irma was born in Buffalo, NY to the late Edward and Catherine Trometer. She met her husband, Ken, on a blind date and they both immediately realized they had found "The One." They married soon after and started their family.
Ken’s job moved them first to Laurel, MD then to Bel Air in Harford County, MD where they built a home and raised their daughters. In 1977, Ken’s job moved them back to western New York for a few years before they returned to Bowie, MD.
In the early years of their marriage, Irma supported Ken as he worked to obtain both his master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of Maryland. During this time, Irma also attended the University of Maryland and later received her associate degree from Harford Community College – something she was very proud of. She was a devout Christian and supported many Lutheran and Methodist charities. She was a member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church in Bowie.
After Ken’s death in 1987, Irma moved to Heritage Harbour in Annapolis where she lived for 30 years until her death. Irma joined and then led groups for the Widowed Persons Support Group and Parents Without Partners – helping others navigate the difficult journey through grief. She became very active at Heritage Harbour, serving on several homeowners’ association committees. She made many dear friends there, including many she met through her dedicated and engaging participation in the welcoming committee. She frequently drove other residents to doctor appointments and brought supplies to a local women’s shelter.
Irma loved to play bridge and played with several bridge groups. After playing a winning round of bridge, she would often call her daughters to casually mention how well she had just done. She was a regular with her Pay-Me group and was active in the Heritage Harbour Dining Club. It was about this time that she met Ross Macaulay who became a significant part of her life. She became very close to his family and they stayed an important part of her life even after his death.
Irma loved her daughters, their spouses, and her grandchildren. Christmas at her house cherished by everyone in the family. She took each of her grandchildren shopping individually for birthday and Christmas gifts, spending afternoons in the mall and going out to lunch. Her organizational skills were unparalleled, and her lists were always at the ready. She read her newspaper faithfully, keeping up with current events and clipping articles to share. She texted on her iPhone with a creative and somewhat excessive use of emojis, and often invented new abbreviations that made her family chuckle. Her family and friends knew her as someone who always had enough time to find out how you were doing. She was rarely in a hurry and knew how to make people feel special. Irma was generous with her time, attention, and resources. She quietly served those she knew and made a difference for so many. She left the world a far better place because she was here.
A visitation will be held on Friday, July 17 from 3 until Irma’s funeral service begins at 4:30 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD. In compliance with CDC guidelines, all guests are reminded to wear masks and maintain proper social distancing. Burial will be private.

Charles, better known as Skip, was born on September 14, 1943 in Washington, D.C to the late Marian and Russell Dorrell. Along with his parents, Skip was predeceased by his daughter Samantha and brother Bob. He is survived by his wife Rose; daughters Catherine the human, Curly Joe the cat, Minou the cat, and Esther Williams the turtle; son Maxwell the cat; grandson Shawn Kauffmann; and four great grandchildren (Jackson, Charlie, Elliot, and Maxwell).

In 1965, when Skip first met his future wife Rose, it was instant dislike. A year later, upon meeting again at the Mighty Mo in Southeast Washington, their former feelings for each other did a one eighty. This time they clicked immediately. Skip and Rose married in 1967 and he went on to be a devoted husband of 53 years.

As a child, Skip enjoyed his time in the Boy Scouts. The later birth of two daughters, however, threw a wrench in his plans to get involved again as an adult. Not one to give up so easily, he became a Girl Scout leader when Samantha joined the local troop in her youth.

Skip worked at the United States Government Printing (now Publishing) Office as the Director of Data Systems, retiring from this senior role in 2003.

His pastimes included: hiking Old Rag Mountain in the Shenandoah National Park; camping in state and national parks; growing vegetables; complaining about both mowing the lawn and Christmas; and repeating the toddler aged funereal toileting habits of his grandson Shawn to anyone who would listen (if you know, you know).

There will be a celebration of life gathering (i.e. party) at some point in the future when it is safe to do so. In the meantime, everyone feel free to raise a glass to Skip to honor his memory.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

Please take a moment and leave a condolence for his family by using the tab on this page.

Mark had many hobbies. He was a master builder of remote-controlled planes and tanks. In recent years, he bought an RV and enjoyed exploring the country with his family. He took up gardening this year and even built a greenhouse. He also loved his many dogs. Most memorably, Mark was a walking encyclopedia, with a photographic memory. Anything he read, he retained. His thirst for knowledge seemed unquenchable. He was our Mr. Fix-It and was able to dissect anything he could get his hands on. Mark was an especially devoted son, to his mother. He and Elke visited faithfully every Sunday, to share a meal, discuss current events, and to help with anything that she needed.
His death is a tremendous loss to his family. In addition to his father James Thornton, Mark is preceded in death by his sister Karen (Bill) Stegman. Mark is survived by his wife, Elke of 31 years; his daughters Nicole and Samantha; his mother Teresa Lynn Thornton; brother Brian (Toni) Thornton; Sister Janet Willing; His nieces Stephanie (Kirk) Hammond; Rita Thornton; Nephews, Benjamin Stegman; James Thornton; Great nephews, Hugh and Wesley Hammond; and Kingston Thornton who adored him. Mark is also mourned by his godmother Margie BrisBois; and was loved in life by his many aunts, uncles, and cousins from his large extended family. We, along with his friends, will always remember his big heart, his generosity, and his boisterous laughter.
Mark’s life will be celebrated with a private Catholic Mass, followed by a private Military Funeral Honors and Committal Service at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery, in Crownsville, Maryland, with his father.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Catholic Charities.

Jeffrey Joseph Kidwell, 57, a 2-year resident of West River, MD, and previously of Edgewater, MD, died on July 9, 2020, at his home following a 2-year battle with cancer. Jeff was born on April 17, 1963 in Frostburg, MD to William Joseph Kidwell and the late Susan Kidwell.

Jeff was best known for strong dedication to his family; his wife and children always came before himself. Jeff spent most of his time with his wife, Robin, and loved the concept of "us" with her; he loved treating his son, Joshua, to lunch to chat about sports, work, and life's big questions; and he prided himself to always side with his daughter, Anya, even if it meant disagreeing with Robin. He loved the beach, boating and socializing within the local community. Jeff was a long-time resident of Edgewater, Maryland and recently moved to the West River to achieve his dream of waterfront living. He spent as much time as possible boating on the local rivers and Chesapeake Bay. Jeff also enjoyed traveling to locations with crystal clear blue water; he loved the Caribbean and Island experiences. In both the Edgewater and West River homes, Jeff and his wife took on complex home renovations and transformed their living experiences. On these projects, he enjoyed negotiating with his wife for the renovation designs and with the contractors for the financial bottom line. One of Jeff’s most charming qualities was his loyalty to the Washington Redskins and Maryland Terrapin sports. He never missed a Redskins game and weekends were often planned around when the Terps were playing; no matter whether their season was going well or not.

Jeff received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and his Master of Business Administration degree from Central Michigan University. He spent his career working in contracts negotiations and finance; most recently working in a local firm that was his dream job that gave him a chance to work in an entrepreneurial setting and develop strong friendships that he cherished.

In addition to his mother, Susan Kidwell, Jeff was preceded in death by his sister, Billie Sue Aisquith of Riva, MD. He is survived by his loving wife of 10 years, Robin (Locy) Kidwell; two children, Joshua Kidwell of Edgewater, MD and Anya Locy of West River, MD; and his father, Joseph Kidwell.

Services and interment are private.

In order to honor Jeff's love for the water and being outside, a Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, July 15 from 5-7pm at The Pier Waterfront Restaurant - on the lower deck. 48 South River Road, Edgewater, MD. https://www.thepieroysterbarandgrill.com/.

Annapolis – Juanita Lucille Anderson died suddenly on July 9, 2020. Born April 12, 1932, Lucille, as she was known to most, was 88 years old.

Lucille was born in Monongah, West Virginia to Emma and Dewey S. Herron. She attended Fairmont State Teacher’s College and obtained a bachelor’s degree and eventually earned her master’s degree. In 1954, she obtained a teaching position at Glen Burnie High School. Lucille taught home economics at Bates Junior High School in Annapolis for most of her teaching career. Lucille retired from teaching in 1992.

Lucille was a member of Calvery United Methodist Church. In addition, Lucille was a member and Past President of the Ladies of the Elks, Annapolis Lodge #622. Lucille was a highly active member of the Annapolis Chapter #46, Order of the Eastern Star, where she served as Worthy Matron on six occasions. She also served as the Deputy Grand Lecturer of the Grand Chapter of Maryland for many years. She enjoyed and treasured the many friendships and experiences as a result of her service.

Lucille married Samuel W. Anderson, Jr. on May 30, 1957 and they spent 63 wonderful years together. Subsequent to her retirement, Lucille and Sam became frequent travelers, both in the United States and abroad. She especially enjoyed the unscripted car trips throughout all of Continental Europe, England and Scotland. These trips allowed for spur of the moment changes and chance encounters that often led to amazing experiences. One of Lucille’s favorite and most memorable was a Christmas Day flight to Iceland, then on to Luxembourg and a sixteen day driving tour that included New Year’s Eve in Vienna, dining in a small French restaurant and walking the streets of Vienna with their new found Viennese friends. This was followed by attending the Boys’ Choir Mass and Vienna Philharmonic Symphony on New Year’s Day. This particular trip included a visit to the Chapel where “Silent Night” was written and a walk around the top of the city walls of Rothenberg, Germany. Lucille and Sam also enjoyed many cruises including the Caribbean and Hawaiian Islands. Other favorites included Mexico and cruising on the Mississippi River from New Orleans.
Lucille and Sam also enjoyed visiting casinos and often visited Atlantic City, Reno, and Las Vegas. In recent years, most of their casino time was spent at Harrington Raceway and Casino in Harrington, Delaware. As a frequent “flyer” Lucille and Sam were well known to all the casino’s staff and enjoyed seeing all of them. They often received “complimentary” trips to the Bahamas, Florida and Las Vegas and enjoyed attending concerts performed by entertainers such as Kenny Rogers, Jeff Foxworthy, and others.

Most of all, Lucille enjoyed and loved her family above all else. As a home economics teacher, Lucille enjoyed and was an amazing cook. Her fudge and homemade bread are legendary and these recipes will be passed down for generations to come. She especially enjoyed spending Holidays with the family (except when she abandoned her children to go to Europe), family dinners and in the later years, dining out with her family. Lucille was also an avid reader and Ravens fan.

Lucille is survived by her husband, Samuel W. Anderson, Jr., who will miss her beyond the expression of words, and her three children, whom she loved dearly, Emily A. Davidson, Owings Mills, MD, Samuel W. Anderson, III, Easton, MD and Jennifer L. Blose (Robert), Winchester, KY.

Lucille is survived by nine grandchildren and she loved them all: L. Michael Davidson, Jr. (Jean), Victoria L. Davidson, Jessica L. Anderson, VA, Jordan S. Anderson (Taylor), Jenna S. Anderson (Casey Joseph – Fiancé), LCDR Joseph S. Huck, USN (Alana), HI, Katherine J. Escobosa (Josue), CA, Allison M. Huck, Washington D.C. and Christopher H. Huck, VA.

Lucille was rarely photographed without an infant in her arms as she is also survived by eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Her great-grandchildren include Kaitlyn Andercyk, Colton Anderson, Anthony Malloy, Taylor and Kevin Griffith, Reagan, Samuel, and Lucy Escobosa.

Lucille is also survived by her sister-in-law, Margaret Mary (Peggy) Caldwell and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lucille was preceded in death by her parents and her three sisters and brother.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 15, 2020 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD 21037. William T.”Bill” Kvetkas, Jr. was born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, PA. He attended Meyers High School there and was selected for the PA high school state Band. He attended the Wharton School at the U of Penn. where he was a member of the AXP fraternity, was selected for Beta Alpha Psi, the accounting honorary society, and played in the Penn band. He received his MA degree from George Washington U. while serving in the Air Force and went on to get a law degree from Georgetown U. where he was selected to join Phi Delta Phi, the law honorary society. Subsequently he passed the D. C. Bar, became a CPA in MD and was admitted to practice in DC and before the U. S. Supreme Court. He also graduated from the National War College, the NISM program at Harvard, and the Federal Executive Institute. Bill received a number of honors during his working and volunteer careers among which were the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal (he was the first person to receive this distinction twice), NSA’s Exceptional Service Award, and Meritorious Service Award, and two Presidential Service Awards
Bill was devoted to his wife of 62 years, Joan, and they were blessed with four children Therese, Bill, III, Mary and Ellen as well as four grand kids Grace, Daniel, Katie and Karl. He often rued the fact that he had taken too much time away from the family while travelling for the government. He and Joan spent a tour of duty in Germany where Therese and Bill III were born, and later travelled extensively in the USA and overseas, often with family members joining them. Joan is a Secular Franciscan and a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and does extensive volunteer work with those organizations.
Bill developed a system of Programming and Budgeting used by George H.W. Bush while Director of Central Intelligence (DCI) to prepare budgets for the Intelligence Community and to send those Budgets to Congress with clear explanations and justification. Congress had been dissatisfied with the disparate nature of the Intelligence Community and its lack of coordination causing them to issue directions to strengthen the community. Mr. Bush had been designated as the new DCI to implement these directives, and Budgets were a key factor involved. After the change in administration in 1977, Mr. Kvetkas modified the system to accommodate the demands of the Zero Based Budgeting (ZBB) system instituted by Pres. Jimmy Carter. Previously he had recast the Programming and Budgeting system at NSA to more effectively produce the Cryptologic budgets. One aspect of that system received recognition of the Association of Governmental Accountants. Earlier in his cryptologic career, both as an Air Force Officer and as a civilian he served as a senior manager, an Assistant Inspector General, a reporter, a traffic analyst, a cryptanalyst, an intercept control officer and on the Director’s staff at NSA. As an extracurricular activity he became President of the employee’s insurance organization and saved the membership money by renegotiating a major contract. He was involved with the Korean and Viet Nam wars and the Cold War.
After retiring from the government, he worked for Lockheed Missiles and Space Corp. in Rosslyn, VA and in Linthicum, MD. Later he served as a senior staff member of the “Aspen/Brown” Commission which was charged with studying aspects of the Intelligence Community. Ignoring advice from friends to limit volunteer activity in retirement, he became overly involved in a variety of activities. He was Chairman of the Board of the Association of Former Intelligence Officers, Treasurer and consultant for the National Cryptologic Museum Foundation, a member of the Security Affairs Support Assn., President of the Bay Winds community band as a percussionist and was a Volunteer Historian at the NSA. Bill was an avid genealogist, more importantly he loved to write the history of families and family members. Perhaps his greatest passion was travel; consequently he and Joan spent a good deal of their retirement time crusing the world. He also enjoyed the water, especially sailing.
Friends are invited to celebrate Bill's life at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD on Sunday from 2 to 4 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 Bestgate Rd., Annapolis, MD on Monday, July 13 at 9 am. Interment will follow at Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville, MD. In lieu of flowers a donations may be made to: Hospice of the Chesapeake, 90 Ritchie Highway, Pasadena, MD 211212 or the American Cancer Society, 7500 Greenway Center Drive, Suite 300, Greenbelt, MD 20770. Condolences may be made by using the Memory Wall link on this page.
