August “Gus” Aranas Blancaflor, 83, of Fort Washington, MD passed away on February 10, 2018.  Born on August 12, 1934 to the late Teodoro Blancaflor and Jovita Aranas in Tanza, Cavite, Philippines. 
August retired from the United States Navy after 24 years of dutiful service.  He was a Parishioner of the St. Columba Catholic Church in Oxon Hill, MD since 1979.  Past member of the Knights of Columbus.  Past President of the Filipino Ministry of St. Columba Catholic Church.  Former Head Servant of the Spirit of the Living God Charismatic Group. He was a lifetime devotee to Our Mother of Perpetual Help and many other Catholic religious activities.  Past President of the Fleet Reserve Association.  Past President of CIPAA – Combined International Philippine American Association.
Gus was fond of ballroom dancing.  He was known for his “Mario Lanza” ballad voice.  He enjoyed reciting nostalgic and patriotic poetry in his native tongue of Tagalog.  He was also a Bingo fanatic for many years. He delighted in telling humorous jokes.
August is survived by his Wife, Corazon. Children, Cristina, Audie, Cynthia, Daughter-in-law, Melissa and one Grandchild, Bianca.  Four sisters, Carmencita, Felicitas, Consolacion, Norma, Brother-in-law, Harvey and numerous nieces and nephews.
A viewing will take place on Friday, March 2, 2018 from 2-4 pm & 6-9 pm at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, P.A. 6160 Oxon Hill Road, Oxon Hill, MD 20745. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 11 am at St. Columba Catholic Church.7800 Livingston Road, Oxon Hill, MD 20745. James C. Butler, III, 80, passed away on Friday, February 9, 2018 after a brief illness. Born on November 20, 1937 to the late James C. “Cam” Butler, II and Katherine “Kip” Wernher Butler, Jim grew up in Syracuse, NY and graduated from Nottingham High School in 1955, The Manlius School in 1956 and Brown University in 1960. Jim met Betsy Maclin one summer during college, they married on February 6, 1960 and spent 56 years devoted to one another. Jim spent most of his career as the President of Syracuse Pottery, the family business.  Jim and Betsy lived for many years in Syracuse, NY and Henderson Harbor, NY. In later years they lived in Sedona, AZ and Odenton, MD.  Most recently Jim was a resident of Sunrise of Annapolis.  Jim loved fishing, boating, bowling and going out with friends and family. He was always gracious and fun-loving – for many years he and his wife hosted an annual weekend fishing trip in the summer for a group of friends called The Fudpuckers. Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Betsy Butler on April 26, 2017. He is survived by his children, James C. (Tricia) Butler, IV and Janet (Robert) Berry and his grandchildren, Manny, Nate, Talia, Kate and Callie. Dorothy "Dottie" Isabelle White, 96, of Annapolis, MD and previously of Hyattsville, MD died on Friday, February 9, 2018. Dorothy was born on June 27, 1921, in Washington, DC, to the late Roy and Hester Johnson. She worked at the Civil Service Commission as a secretary. In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Julius White in 2005 and a brother, Gordon Johnson. She is survived by her two sons, Dennis James White of Bowie, and Wayne Jeffery White of Hyattsville; two grandchildren, Christopher White of Marietta, GA and Lorrie Carns of Baltimore; and a great-grandson, Alexander Carns.

Jean Marie Momb, 62, of Ft. Washington, MD passed away on February 8, 2018.  Jean was born on July 7, 1955 to the late Maurice Stack, and Madoline Stack in Hopkinsville, Kentucky.  
Jean was a Homemaker and an Uber Driver. She enjoyed coin collecting, video slots, and being with her family.
She is survived by her Husband, Michael W. Momb. Son, Michael J. Momb. Brother, Robert. Sisters, Nancy, Janet, and Mary.  Brother-In-Laws, Gary, and Brian.  She is also survived by Nieces and Nephews.

MICHAEL HILL McCLUNEY "Mac"

Passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 8, 2018 with his family by his side, after a long standing illness. Michael was born on August 29,1942 in Jacksonville, Florida to Byron C. McCluney and Lillie Mae Martin. Michael is survived by "the Love of his Life", Louise J. McCluney; six children, Stephanie M. Griffin-Gunn, Jim McCluney (Lisa), Kevin R. Jones (Lillie), Cathy Reynolds (Greg), Michele Vitullo (Thomas), and Claudette C. McCluney-Hall (Brian). He is also survived by one sister, Diane Smith of Pasadena, MD.; eight grandchildren, Nichole, Devri, Thomas, Jr., Kevin II., Dylan, Daniele, Cassidy, Brian, Jr. and 1 great-grand child, Deonte', and a host of other relatives and many friends. Kenneth Lynn Perrin, age 80, of Annapolis, Maryland, passed away on February 8, 2018 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.  Ken was born on July 29, 1937 in Los Angeles, California to Freeman Whitaker Perrin and Lois Bowen Perrin and spent his childhood in the San Gabriel Valley of California.
Ken graduated from Occidental College in 1959 with a degree in psychology.  He received his Master’s Degree in speech pathology from California State University, Long Beach in 1964 and his PhD in Speech and Hearing Sciences in 1969 from Stanford University Medical School. 
After chairing the Department of Communicative Disorders at the University of the Pacific for several years, Ken became Director of Education and Scientific Programs at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association in Washington DC.   He then went on to be President of West Chester University from 1982 to 1991, President of the Council on Postsecondary Education in Washington DC from 1991 to 1993 and Chancellor and Senior Vice President at the University of Hawaii from 1993 to 1997.  Ken ended his career as Chancellor of Indiana University South Bend from 1997 to 2002.
In all his university positions, Ken’s main emphasis was on students and how he could help them reach their full potential. He kept in touch with many of them over the years and was very proud of their accomplishments. 
Among his many awards, Ken was a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and received the Distinguished Alumni Award from California State University, Long Beach. 
Ken is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley Anne Perrin; daughter Lynnsey Ann Perrin Hee and son-in-law Michael Hee of Wayne, Pennsylvania; son Steven Kenneth Perrin and daughter-in-law Dorrie Perrin of Camarillo, California; his grandchildren, Thor Perrin Hee, Brooksey Perrin Hee, and Sea Sea Perrin Hee of Wayne, Pennsylvania and Alexandria Perrin of Camarillo, California; and his brother, Dale Perrin of San Juan Capistrano, California.
Ken was passionate about helping others.  He helped countless young people realize their dreams of getting into college.  Ken always was very active in the local communities in which he worked such as serving as Chairman of the United Way Campaign in West Chester, Pennsylvania, member of the Board of Directors of the Lyman House Museum in Oahu, Hawaii, and serving on the Board of Directors of the Memorial Hospital of South Bend, Indiana.  One of his favorite activities was Brian’s Run, a 10k run to benefit the handicapped. He initiated West Chester University’s participation in this event which continues to this day.
Ken and his wife Shirley retired to Annapolis, Maryland in 2002 to be close to most of their grandchildren and to participate in one of their favorite activities, sailing.   Their sailboat, Windwalker, brought him much joy and their grandchildren even more. Ken was a master story teller and filled a room with his big personality.  He loved to spend time with his friends and family telling stories, listening and making everyone laugh.  His ability to carry a conversation on practically any topic was second to none.  He will be missed dearly by all who knew him.

Margaret Ann Schofield, 85, a lifelong resident of Edgewater, MD died on Tuesday, February 6, 2018, at Mandrin Chesapeake Hospice House, after a brief illness. Born on April 29, 1932, in Friendship, MD to the late Olie Trott and Linda Allen, Margaret worked in the real estate business for more than 50 years, owning her own company, South River Properties, before retiring at age 82. Margaret enjoyed spending time with Robert (Mr. Bob) vacationing and playing the slots with Bonnie. She adored her great-grandchildren. So long Grandma…Cheese and Crackers. 
In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her long-time partner, Robert Kenney; her son, Edward Sames, Jr.; her brother, Albert Lester Trott and her sister, Mildred Sherbert. She is survived by her daughters, Joan Sames and Tricia Jamerson; her husband, Tim of Edgewater, MD; her grandchildren, Bryan Agee , Michelle (Don) Collett, Lucas, Logan, and Levin Jamerson all of Edgewater, MD and her great-grandchildren, Brendon Agee,  Sophie Collett and Olivia and Caleb Jamerson. Marilyn Eva (Parrish) Wishart 
Lynn Wishart, 94, passed away in Forest, VA on Sunday, February 4, 2018. Born in West Seneca, New York in 1923, she was the daughter of Wilbur & Evelyn (Anger) Parrish. Lynn was raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. She was married to the late Lt. Col. James H. N. Wishart, Sr. in June of 1942. The 2 traveled the United States as an Air Force Family for 26 years, including serving three years in London, England. Their family settled in Annapolis, MD in 1959. Active in many social groups throughout her lifetime, she was a member of the Naval Academy Club, Hillsmere Garden Club, American Antiques Club of Annapolis, and the Hillsmere Bridge Club.  Her volunteer experiences included being a Cub Scout Den Leader, Troop Service Director for the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland, Treasurer and Food Chair Person for the Annapolis Pony Club and a YWCA Book Shop clerk. She was an avid supporter of P.A.L. Football and the Hillsmere Swim Team. Her hobbies included bowling, cake decorating, square dancing with the Annapolis Square Riggers, crafting, crossword puzzles, sewing, traveling and reading. She attended Eastport United Methodist Church.
She is predeceased by her husband, Lt. Col. James H. N. Wishart, Sr. in 1987 and son, Michael S. Wishart in 2017.  Surviving are her three sons, James H. N. Wishart, Jr. of Apex, NC, Donald A. Wishart (Annette) of Forest, VA, Kenneth N. Wishart (Norma) of Annapolis, MD; daughter Linda S. Harris of Huntingtown, MD; and numerous beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. 
A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, February 17th at the Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD from 2 PM until her service begins at 3:30 PM.

Stella "Terra" Walters

The world became less bright and colorful with the sudden passing of Stella Jefferson Walters on Feb. 2, 2018. Although she lived 77 fantastic years, she died far too soon. Instead of focusing on the day she died, she would have wanted us to focus on the 28,121 days of love, laughter, and friendship she brought to our lives. 

Stella Walters, who went by the name of Terra, took the world by storm. After growing up in Eden, North Carolina, she took her ear for language and penchant for prose to UNC-Greensboro to complete undergraduate studies in English. Upon graduating, she embarked on a career that was as multi-faceted as her personality. Terra was, at various times, a journalist, a teacher, a writer, a restaurant critic, a museum docent, an editor, and a surgery center manager. No matter what job Terra held, she excelled and exuded passion for the work. 

Her first job out of college was teaching at the Marjorie Walters School for Gifted Children in New Orleans. It was there that Terra met Richard Walters, and they quickly bonded over a shared love of fine automobiles. They spent their years together traveling the world, collecting art, and raising their feline “children.” Eventually, Terra and Richard settled in Annapolis and worked in the D.C. area—he at the Department of Labor and she as a teacher at Fort Hunt Elementary School. No matter where Terra lived, though, she always referred to New Orleans as home. She left the Big Easy, but it never truly left her. 

Her vibrancy and zeal for life were evident to everyone she met. One of her many remarkable gifts was the ability to connect with anyone, no matter their age or situational background. Her light drew people near, and her story-telling ability would keep us chuckling for days. Her genuine interest in the people she met and the rare ability to make them feel like a million dollars cemented friendships. Her sharp mind and equally sharp wit would have an audience laughing out loud. 

We will not forget Terra’s kindness and generosity bestowed upon those in her path. We smile in remembrance of her fondness of New Orleans, French cuisine, fine art, fast cars, and festive socks…and how the phrase “very unique” filled this polished grammar scholar with abhorrence. 

Terra was predeceased by her husband Richard Walters and her parents Bethel and Elizabeth Jefferson. She is survived by her extended family, numerous friends, and two cats, Kayah and Remy. She leaves behind a considerable accumulation of original literary work and a myriad grieving hearts, a true testament to her life and legacy. 

Family and friends will hold a celebration of Terra Walters' life at the Laurel Grove Inn, 2881 South Haven Drive, Annapolis, MD on April 28 at 1:00 P.M. Donations in her memory should be made to Cure SMA.

Arthur Francis "Buzz" Anderson, 95, of Edgewater, MD passed away on Friday, February 2 at his home. Born in Glen Ridge, NJ, Art was a 1941 graduate of Glen Ridge High School. He enrolled in Newark College of Engineering but was called to active military service in 1943. He spent part of his training at Texas A&M University and was later sent to Germany with the 106th Infantry Division just as that portion of WW II ended. He served in Germany with the Occupation Forces. After the war, Art earned an engineering degree and worked with General Electric for 30 years. His specialty was designing radar antennas for the military. He finished his engineering career at IITRI in Edgewater, MD. Art was a member of Sigma XI, The Scientific Research Society of North America. He enjoyed golf, advanced mathematics, tennis, gardening, playing bridge, and reading. He also enjoyed hiking, camping and fishing with his niece and nephews in New York’s Adirondack Park and studying the ecology of Adirondack beaver bogs. Art was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Patricia Evans, who died in 2011. They were married in February of 1965. Art is survived by his three nephews, Bill, Tom and Bob Barber and his niece, Linda Domino. He also had numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be private. Barbara Kogok Scott died on February 1, 2018 at Ginger Cove in Annapolis. She was 88 years old. Barbara was born on July 5, 1929 in Anacostia, DC to the late Norman and Mary Elizabeth Kogok. She was known for her generous spirit and love for her family. She was an accomplished homemaker who enjoyed reading, sewing and bridge. In addition to her parents Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Woodston Scott whom she was married to for 60 years; and a brother Louis Kogok. She is survived by her children, Cheryl (Blaise) Keen of Dowell, MD and Bryan (Laura) Scott of Queenstown, MD; five grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Joan Murphy and Carol Hoffman.

Dan Mitchell Spain, Jr., 82, passed away January 30, 2018, surrounded by his wife, children, and animals.  He was born in Belhaven, NC on December 28, 1935, to the late Dan Mitchell and Mabel Earl Spain, Dan earned a bachelor’s degree from East Carolina University and a Master’s of Public Health degree from the University of North Carolina.  He served as a cryptographer for the U.S. Army.

Dan completed his remarkable 28 years of public service as Public Health Advisor, Director of Program Development, at the National Center for Health Services Research in 1986.  Dan lived in Arnold, MD and continued to work in real estate and home appraisals. When he really retired, Dan enjoyed fishing, crabbing and exploring every nook and cranny of the Chesapeake Bay by boat.  He loved to laugh and entertain, garden, travel the world, read and take care of all living things - small and large - as well as assist his wife, Chris, in her charitable works and animal rescues.  He leaves a big hole on this earth.

Dan is survived by his loving wife, Chris; son, Kevin Lancaster (Joy); daughter, Dana Katherine, grandchildren; Haley and Riley; and his siblings, Adolphus Spain (Loyd Johnson), Linda Bartlett (Ralph), and Hilda Spain.

Shirley Jeanette Cooper, 90, a resident of Riva, MD, died on Tuesday, January 30, 2018, in Decatur, GA.
Known as "Jeannie, Nini, and Ammie" by her family, she was born on October 31, 1927, in Bowie, MD to the late Grace Dufour Phelps Beall and John Ryon Phelps.  Jean was retired from her position as an administrative assistant for the Environmental Protection Agency.  She enjoyed art, needlepoint, and the Bible. In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, William A. Cooper, Sr.; son, Gerard Ryan Benfield; granddaughter, Christy Lynn Ingram; and brother, William Warren Phelps. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Gail and her husband Eugene McDermott of Monrovia, MD; her son, William, Jr. and his wife Marian Cooper of Atlanta, GA; daughter-in-law, Kathy Honaker Benfield of Ft. Walton Beach, FL; and five grandchildren, Eugene "Sonny" Paul McDermott, Jr., William James McDermott, Spencer Oakes Cooper, Derek Manning Cooper, and Megan Ryan Hulse; and two great-grandchildren. Betty Sue Veronick, 91, of Annapolis and previously of Glen Burnie passed after a battle with vascular dementia. Betty was born June 6, 1926 in Pasadena, MD to the late Alvin and Mary Deichmiller.  She was Lab Tech Assistant  with Westinghouse from which she retired in 1991. Betty was a member of St. Albans Episcopal Church in Glen Burnie, and Riva Trace Baptist Church in Riva. She was also an active volunteer at Baltimore Washington Medical Center working in both the gift shop and mail room, and a member of the auxiliary at BWMC. In her youth Betty enjoyed playing the piano. She also enjoyed baking, sewing, gardening and golfing with co workers from Westinghouse.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by a grandson, Neil Veronick;  siblings, Leroy, Frederick, and Alvin Deichmiller, and Helen Cherry. 

She is survived by her children, James Veronick of Riveria Beach, MD, John Veronick of Rawlings, MD and Helen Goodall of Riva, MD; four grandchildren, John Veronick, Aaron Jeffords, Rachael Lesniewski, and Sarah Johnson; 13 great grandchildren; and a sister, Mae Ferrell.

Francis Joseph “Frank” Pryal, 80, formerly of Rockville, MD and Bethany Beach, DE, passed away due to complications associated with Parkinson’s Disease on January 28, 2018 at Brightview Senior Living in Edgewater, MD. Born on January 11, 1938 in Queens, NY  to the late Francis Aloysius Pryal, a New York City police officer and Anna Pope Pryal, a homemaker, Frank attended Power Memorial High School in Manhattan before the family relocated to Carbondale, PA, where he graduated from Saint Rose of Lima High School and earned bachelor and master degrees in accounting from The University of Scranton.  In 1959 he wed Rosemary Munley.  In 1964 Frank, Rosemary and their two young sons, Dave and Tom, moved to the Washington, D.C. area where Frank began a career in law enforcement as an agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration. Frank was recognized for his outstanding service by Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy.  He served as a field and supervisory agent in Scranton, PA, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, MD and Miami, FL. During his career with the DEA, Frank traveled the world including South America and Asia.  He retired in 1988 after a distinguished career and moved to Bethany Beach, DE where he was an active member of Saint Ann’s Catholic Church and worked part time as Assistant Alderman for the town of Bethany Beach. Frank and Rosemary enjoyed traveling and were delighted to explore their family heritage in Ireland and attend Mass at the Vatican. They also enjoyed many winters with friends in Naples, FL but Frank’s greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Frank is survived by his wife, Rosemary Pryal; his sons, David Pryal and his wife, Geralyn of Bethesda, MD and Tom Pryal and his wife, Helen of Annapolis, MD; his grandchildren, Tommy, Patrick, Mary Helen, Marra, Deirdre and Rory; his brother, David Pryal and his wife, Jeanne of Estero, FL; his sisters, Ann Grovich and her husband, Richard and Betty McKelvey all of Sugarloaf, PA; his brother-in-law, Neil Gallagher of Bethesda, MD and numerous nieces and nephews.  Frank was preceded in death by his sister, Miriam Gallagher. Friends are invited to celebrate Frank's life at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD on Friday, February 2 from 6 to 8 PM.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Saint John  Neumann Catholic Church, 620 Bestgate Road,  Annapolis, MD on Saturday, February 3 at 10:30 AM.  Private interment will be at a later date at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Dagsboro, DE. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests  donations may be made to the National Parkinson’s Foundation at www.Parkinson.org.
