Robert William Fitzwater, “Bobby”, 73, a 37-year resident of Davidsonville, MD and previously of Upper Marlboro, MD passed away on October 10, 2023 in Annapolis, MD.

Robert was born on October 16, 1949 in Cheverly, MD to the late Robert Samuel and Delores Ann Fitzwater. He graduated from Bladensburg High School, class of 1969. He was the owner of a flooring company, Carpet Experts, Inc. and retired after 45 years. 

After retiring, he enjoyed cutting grass, spending time with his family and traveling with his wife.

In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Katherine Anne Fitzwater.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Elizabeth Sigafoose Fitzwater, his sons; Robert William Fitzwater, Jr. and his wife Becky of Jensen Beach, FL and Samuel Patrick Fitzwater and his wife Rebecca of Davidsonville, MD, also survived by his grandchildren; Julia, Abigail, Elizabeth, Riley and Avery Fitzwater.

Loretta “Sissy” Coffin Sweeney, a 42-year resident of Edgewater, Maryland passed away on October 10, 2023 in Emmitsburg, MD. Born on May 2, 1957 in Annapolis, MD to the late Dorothy Ann Bryan and Roland Elder Coffin, Sr., Loretta was 66 when she passed away.

Loretta loved her career as a daycare provider. When not working, she enjoyed playing Bingo, hunting for and collecting antiques, and most of all spending time with her family, especially her beloved grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Loretta is preceded in death by her loving husband of 42 years, George Vincent Sweeney, Sr., as well as her brother, Roland Elder Coffin, Jr. She is survived by her son, George Vincent Sweeney, Jr. of Taneytown, MD; daughter, Heather Stickley of Walkersville, MD; brother, Henry Thomas Coffin of Bokeelia, FL; and grandchildren, Madison Sweeney, Paige and Briannah Stickley, and Violet and Elliott Tavel.

Ana Efa Alvarez, 65, of Fort Washington, Maryland, passed away on October 7, 2023.

Ana, born in the Philippines, was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother to her family. She is survived by her husband, Tony, four children and in-laws, and five grandchildren. She was the role model of many who have known and loved her. Unbeknownst to many, she bravely faced her sickness and endured pain for many years, but still exuded benevolence and devotion to her family, relatives, friends and even to those whom she did not know personally.

A warmhearted servant of God, she and her husband were members of Couples for Christ and a parishioner of St. Columba Catholic Church. She was a dedicated teacher for the past 3 years at Crossland High School in Prince George’s County, and taught at Basset High School and Laurel Park Middle School in Virginia for 4 and 11 years, respectively.

Michael "Mike" Mathew Titsworth, 58, a 1-year resident of Ellicott City and previously of Edgewater for 17 years, died on October 4, 2023, in Philadelphia, PA of septic shock/peritonitis.

Born January 7, 1965, in Tulsa, OK to the late Charles Michael and Carolyn Sue Titsworth, he honorable served his country in the U.S. Army. Mike worked as an electrician and project manager and was a longtime union member of IBEW Local 26. He enjoyed history, baseball, western movies, and football, and was an avid reader.

In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by his sister, Jennifer Leigh Titsworth.

He is survived by a son, Michael Brian Titsworth of Columbia, MD; a brother, Robert Glenn Titsworth of Oklahoma City, OK; and his stepmother, Donna Marie Titsworth.

Elizabeth “Alice” Belisle, 78, a one-year resident of Bowie, MD, and previously of Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away on October 3, 2023, in Glen Burnie, MD. 

Alice was born on November 5, 1944, in Rochdale, England to the late Angus and Alice McCuaig. 

She was a self-employed Graphic artist who loved computers and presenting. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son Robert E. Belisle, and brother, Alan McCuaig. 

Alice is survived by her daughter Kimberly Alvey-Box of Davidsonville, MD, and her sister, Angela Holdaway of Sandy, Utah, and one grandson, Parker Box.

Noel Marie Machi, 80, of Davidsonville, MD passed away on Tuesday, October 3, 2023. Born December 25, 1942, in Washington DC to the late Duval and Ariel Sherier Crist, she was a homemaker most of her life. Henry “Hank” L. Hedges, a 16-year resident of Tracy’s Landing, Maryland and previously of Syracuse, New York, passed away on October 1, 2023 at the age of 75. Born on December 8, 1947 in Louisville, Kentucky to the late Ethel and Henry Hedges, Hank joined the Army Reserves as a young adult.

Following his service, Hank was employed as a Certified Safety Professional and was Vice President at The Safety Company, Inc., where he helped ensure the safety of workplace environments for employees of a variety of companies. 

Hank is survived by his beloved wife of 24 years, Debra Mattie-Hedges; children, Henry L. Hedges IV (wife Angie) and Christina Spies (husband Scott) of Missouri; stepdaughter Lauren Healy of Syracuse, NY; siblings, Daryl Hedges and Sheila Massey (husband Freddy) of Bowling Green, KY; four grandchildren, Chandler and Carson Spies and Lindsey and Alexa Hedges; and several nieces and nephews. 

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Hank’s life on Friday, October 6 from 6-8 PM at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD 21037, where a funeral service will be held the following day, Saturday, October 7 at 10 AM. Thomas Edwin Bowman, aka Ed, Dad, Grandpa, and Papa, a 20-year resident of Churchton, MD, passed away peacefully at home with family on Sunday, October 1, 2023.  He was 84.  Ed is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Ann Marie; daughter, Amy and husband, Kevin Hodgson; stepchildren: David and wife, Eileen Ashby Jr., Michael and wife, Jennifer Ashby, and Joanna and husband, Craig Melton; nephews: Robert “Bobby” Moran and Dale Moran; 11 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 2 great-nephews and a great-niece; and numerous family and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Eva Bowman, sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Richard Moran, and grandson, Connor Ashby.  

Ed was born in Floyd County, VA on July 3, 1939.  He was a member of the Church of the Brethren.  He graduated from Floyd High School, worked at a furniture factory, and then began a program in electronics.  In November 1961 he proudly enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, worked as an avionic communications technician, and retired in August 1976 as a Master Sergeant.  He was a woodworker, guitar player, singer, electronics and technology lover, a friend to all, and always willing to help others.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 8, 2023 starting at 2pm and followed by a Memorial Service at 4pm at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD.  Ed will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.  The family requests in lieu of flowers a donation be made to an organization of your choice.  

Donald Jewell
1930-2023

Don Jewell passed away on October 1st, among his family and friends. He was 93,and he spent those 93 years living life as fully as it can be lived-a man who made an enormous footprint,and leaves behind a hole that can never be filled.
He was a horseman, a skier, a golfer, a pool player, a musician , a sailor and a storyteller. He was a husband , a father, a grandfather, a counselor and a friend.

Don grew up as a child of the Depression, spending his childhood in a cold-water flat in 1930’s Washington. His father was a cab driver, and his mother wrapped gifts at a Woodward and Lothrop. His uncle, who Don adored, ran a parking concession at one of Baltimore’s best restaurants. The future Dr. Jewell, Ph.D, spent his school years at race tracks, pool rooms and boxing gyms. He toyed with becoming a professional boxer. He played guitar with musicians like Roy Clark, Jimmy Dean and a young Patsy Cline. He even spent some time in a rodeo. A stint driving a delivery truck convinced him that a college degree might be a good idea, and even though his high school teachers thought he wasn’t good for anything more than shop class he enrolled at University of Maryland-at first hitchhiking his way to College Park every morning. After Maryland came the Air Force , and finally a doctorate from the University of Denver.

Coming back to D.C., Don was one of the first practicing Clinical Psychologists in the city, working first for the Bureau of Mental Health, then the Pastoral Institute, and by the late 60’s with a thriving practice on Connecticut Avenue. In addition, he was active in political life, meeting with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; offering advice to President Johnson ; and having his office bugged by President Nixon. Don loved his work, and was brilliant at helping his patients. He was still seeing patients just weeks before his death.

Professional success was only part of the story. Don loved family,and was determined to give his sons- Cliff, Stuart and Rob- the sort of idyllic country childhood he’d dreamed of while hanging out in pool rooms as a boy. He built a farm in Broad Run, Virginia complete with barn, horses and a river to play in. And every summer he spent a month sailing the Chesapeake with them on his Sailboat, “The Beagle.”

And Don was a man of many enthusiasms. He was an avid reader of all literature, but especially loved Mark Twain’s writings and delighted in Cliff’s Twain portrayals. He was a natural athlete and enjoyed most any sport. He was fascinated by history and loved to explore antiques of all types. He especially loved horses- whether they were for him and Kris to ride around the farm, or whether he was training them the racetrack. In his youth, he was an exercise rider at the track, and in his adulthood, competed in point-to-point races and dressage shows in Middleburg, Va. He was every bit at home in the paddock as he was in his Connecticut Avenue office.

Don loved hosting friends and family. The extended family’s annual Thanksgiving was a sacred event, and he and Kris hosted a legendary Kentucky Derby party for decades. But he most loved the late part of the party, when many guests had left, and his sons would pick up guitars and play.
And he loved the quiet times: relaxing with a book, watching a ballgame, or dining out at a favorite restaurant with Kris.

Don is predeceased by his granddaughter Claudia Jewell; his son Stuart Jewell; and the mother of his sons Carolyn Jewell. He is survived by his wife Kristina Jewell, his son Cliff Jewell(Teresa), Janice Jewell( wife of Stuart), son Robert Jewell, and granddaughter Olivia Jewell.

Don was a self-made man who enjoyed every step along the way. In boxing terms, he went the distance - but if there were a sixteenth round, he’d be in there still.

It is with sadness that we announce Robert Norris Proctor, 86, a 55-year resident of Davidsonville, MD, passed away at his home on September 29, 2023.  Known affectionately as “Pookie”, Robert was born on August 19, 1937 in Melwood, MD to the late William “Kenneth” and Mary “Maggie” Proctor.  He was educated in Prince George’s County and started a 39-year career in 1960 at Whitehall Shell in Bowie as an automobile mechanic.  After his retirement, Robert went to work in 2000 for Giant Food in Edgewater where he worked for 14 years.

Robert had a passion for working on cars, and enjoyed crossword puzzles, neighborhood watch and car counting from his patio, traveling and, most of all, spending time with his family, particularly at his kids’ and grandkids’ events.  He was also a long-time member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Davidsonville.

In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his five brothers, William “Sonny”, Joseph “Sonny Boy”, Vincent “Sammy”, and Warren Proctor and his sister, Mary “Sis” Newman.  He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Shirley Elaine (née Neal) Proctor; two sons, Patrick Proctor (Tina) of Severn, MD and Kevin Proctor (Gina) of Pasadena, MD; four daughters, Denise Sanders (Anthony) of Davidsonville, Cindy Jackson of Pasadena, MD, Kathy Freeman (Jacques) of Crownsville, MD and Letisha Lee of Odenton, MD; one sister, Shirley Neal (Jimmy), one brother, Calvin “Billy” Proctor, and two sisters-in-law, Jean and Viola Proctor.  Robert is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Ketia Kelly (Gary), Keyonna Silva (Errol), Jasmine Jackson, Avery Freeman (Monica), Maurice Jackson, Jordan Williams (David), Kevin Proctor Jr. (Kim), Patrick Proctor Jr., Julian Freeman, Megan Proctor, A.J. Lee, Toni Lee; and 7 great-grandchildren.

Friends are invited to visit with Robert’s family on Monday, October 9, from 10AM until Mass of Christian Burial is offered at 11AM at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 W. Central Avenue, Davidsonville.  Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton.

Robert Joseph Beasley “Bob”, age 86, passed peacefully, in his sleep, on the morning of September 27, 2023 after a lengthy illness, with a smile on his face. Born on August 4, 1937 in Washington, DC to the late Joseph Anthony and Margaret Alice Beasley, Bob attended St. Theresa Elementary, Ketcham Elementary, St. Anthony’s Catholic School and Linton Hall Military Academy. He also attended DeMatha High School and Bell Vocational High School where he was a member of the football teams at both high schools. While in high school, Bob was employed at Atlas Printing Co. and upon graduating he worked at Sumart Press in Washington, D.C. He later enjoyed a 38 year career as a journeyman pressman for Editor’s Press in Hyattsville, MD from where he retired in 1999. Bob was a former parishioner at St. Francis Xavier, St. Bernard’s, St. Joseph’s and Holy Family Catholic Churches. He currently attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Edgewater, MD, where he was an usher, Eucharistic Minister, altar server and a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society.  Bob helped with the collection of food for the food bank and worked for many years for Habitat for Humanity.  He was also a handyman for Holy Family Catholic Church, Our Lady of Perpetual Help and his family.  He also was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. Bob was a faithful blood donor for more than forty years.  His main love was his family where he gave undivided attention and help when needed.  He had a great love of God and country.  He was generous with his time and service to family, church, friends and anyone in need.  He loved to ride his Road King Harley Davidson motorcycle and was a member of HOG (Harley Davidson Owner’s Group) and belonged to the local and national chapters.  He was proud of his work in collecting for Muscular Dystrophy for the Harley Davidson campaign. He also enjoyed fishing, boating, the Washington Redskins, Navy Football games, tailgating, carpentry, stonework, traveling, camping, going on cruises, music, dancing, going to the theater, and gatherings with all members of the family whenever he could. You could hear him routinely say, “Honey!”, “Wait a minute now”, “Are you sure?” and “Sheesh.” Bob is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marina Beasley who was the love of his life. They met at the young adults club at their church.  Initially, she did not like Bob but they married and lived happily ever after. He is also survived by his children, Lori (Jeff) and Rob (Connie);  his grandchildren, Gregory (Tessa), Victoria (Brad), Stefanie (Tim), Karolynn (Jordan), Christopher (Shannon) and Ashley (Austin); his sister, Kathleen Sozio Albee, 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Richard Anthony Beasley who died at the age of three. Patricia Ann “Pat” Citrano, 76, passed away on September 27. She was a loving daughter, a kind sister, and a caring aunt to her family. Pat was a part of the eMerge, Inc. family for many years as well.  
 
Everyone who knew Pat loved her. She had a bright smile, and sweet disposition and loved to chat with anyone she met. Her happiest times were spent with her mother, Luralene Loey Barrack Kerschbaum, who loved and cared for her until her passing in 1997. They loved to go shopping, to the movies, and to travel. Pat loved to sit at her mother’s table as she prepared meals and when her family gathered at their home. Holidays were especially joyful for her. Pat had an amazing recall of every family member’s birthday!
 
Pat was a member of the eMerge, Inc. community for many years. She participated in their day program and eventually became a full-time residential member. She enjoyed the providers who took such great care of her and were invested in her happiness and health. Pat made many friends in the community as well.
 
Pat is survived by her brother, Robert (Debbie) Citrano, and his children, Lisa Citrano and Tracy Citrano; a niece, Teresa (Richard) Pierrie; and many great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her father, Robert J. Citrano; and her sister, Lurlene Renee "Renny" (William Thomas "Bucky" DeAtley) DeAtley .
 
A private celebration of Pat’s life will be held in the spring.

Margaret Mary Dolan, "Peggy", 90, a longtime resident of the Bay Ridge community in Annapolis, passed away on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, in Annapolis, MD. Peggy was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania on November 4, 1932, to the late James and Margaret Dolan, Jr. Peggy earned a BSN from Villanova University and a MSN from Boston University. During a long career in psychiatric nursing, she worked mostly with troubled youth and adults in PA, RI, Washington, DC, and VA. Interests included tennis, hiking, camping, skiing, and sailing. She is survived by her partner, Nancy Lundquist of Annapolis, her sister, Mary Frontczak of Colorado, a niece, and 6 nephews. A family funeral service will be held in Pennsylvania at a later date. Patricia Ann Gardner, 80, a 55-year resident of Shady Side, MD, died at home on September 25, 2023, surrounded by her children, following an 18-month battle with cancer.  Known to family and friends as Tricia, she was born on September 10, 1943, in Omaha, NE to the late Robert George Dodson and Mary Joan Cain. She graduated from Bladensburg High School and was employed as an office manager for the Facilities Department at Anne Arundel Community College until her retirement in 2006. Passionate about her backyard wildlife, Tricia made sure the birds and squirrels were fed heartily.  She also enjoyed trips to the mountains, cooking Christmas dinner for her family, and watching game shows and old westerns.

Tricia is survived by her children, David (Donna) Hutchinson of Germantown, MD, Judithmary (Bob) Wilson of Annapolis, MD, Joseph "Joe" Hutchinson of North Beach, MD, and Kelly Gardner of Charlotte, NC; a sister, Judith Clark of Huntingtown, MD; 11 grandchildren, Corey McGuire, Caitlyn Townshend, Matthew and Sarah Hutchinson, Madeline Stokes, Timothy and Paige Kelly, Manual G. Caunan, II, Shane Wilson, Nicole Duval, and Rachel Brinlee; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Ronald Lee Cully, 89, of Annapolis, MD passed away peacefully at home on September 24, 2023 of cancer.

Ron was born in York, PA to Raymond and Margaret (Noll) Cully in 1934.  He graduated from William Penn Senior High School and trained as a printer’s apprentice.  He worked at the York Gazette and Daily, York Dispatch and Maple Press.  He made the best decision of his life when he married Sylvia (Peters) Cully.

Desiring a more stable job he took a printing job with the Federal Government in the Government Printing Office (GPO).  Ron started his job in DC, while Sylvia sold their house (all alone and without a realtor).  They moved with their two daughters to Riva, MD.  Ron worked at the GPO until December 31, 1999 and retired as a government printing contract administrator.

He loved hunting as a young man, but his two little girls had other ideas.  He enjoyed square dancing, woodworking, vegetable gardening and catching a bushel of crabs for his family and grandkids.  He was feared by crabs and hated by garden weeds.  He was biking well into his 80s and loved to hike with the MD Mountain Club.  He would sit with his cat, Pumpkin, on the front porch to discuss world problems, the price of tuna and how pretty the trees were.  Until about a month ago, Ron did a daily 2-mile hike around the loop in his Heritage Harbour community.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Doris (Cully) Pickel and Jeannie (Cully) Danz, and his daughter, Brenda Piirto.

He is survived by his wife and crabbing buddy, Sylvia; daughter, Beth Baur; sons-in-law, retired Marines Gregory Baur and Mike Piirto (Brenda’s husband); five grandchildren, Sarah DiCerbo, Jessica Lewis (husband CDR Joshua Lewis), Hope Richards (Lee), Joy Frejka (Matt), and 2LT David Piirto USAF; and four great-grandchildren, James, Joseph and Jonathan Lewis and Nora Richards.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Ron and Sylvia's life on Saturday, July 6, 2024 at 2 pm at the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Annapolis, 710 Ridgely Ave, Annapolis, MD 21401.
