Robert Charles Woofter, 86, a twenty-five year resident of Fort Washington, Maryland passed away last Friday, July 12, 2013. He died peacefully at home surrounded by family. Bob was a remarkable man: loving, gentle, and affectionate. Everyone called him Uncle Bob. He was a beloved husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, sailor, police officer, preacher, world traveller, writer, painter, hunter, and a fourth degree black belt in judo. He served in the navy in WWII and was one of the first few to land in Hiroshima to assess the damage done by the atomic bomb. He was a pastor for many years before he moved to the Metropolitan DC area to become a police officer. He loved John Wayne, the history of Native Americans, football, Reese's peanut butter cups and quarter pounder with cheese at McDonald's. He was good at telling jokes and loved receiving them in return. He is survived by his wife Luz Woofter, daughters Rhonda Woofter and Marsha Finlason and her husband Toby Finlason, stepsons Ernest Valmonte and Eric Valmonte, and stepdaughter Elaine Valmonte-Tomek and her husband Chip Tomek. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. On Thursday, July 18 family and friends are invited to Robert's Life Celebration at the GEORGE P. Diane Eillen Lowther, the beloved wife of Thomas D. Lowther; mother of Amy Burgess, Ken and David Lowther; sister of Carol Harris, also survived by five granddaughters and a grandson. Louise W. Wood, 84, a six-year resident of Annapolis and previously of Upper Marlboro, died peacefully July 10 at her home surrounded by family.

She was born on July 27, 1928 in Upper Marlboro to the late Thomas and Mattie White. After the death of her first husband, Alvin L. Beall, Louise took over management of Dino’s, the restaurant they opened in Suitland, for the next 12 years.

Louise enjoyed cooking, dancing, visiting casinos and playing slot machines.

In addition to her first husband, Louise was preceded in death by her son, Alvin L. Beall, Jr.; two sisters, Bertha Hill and Dorothy Walker; and stepdaughter, Linda Sue Wood.

She is survived by her husband, William C. Wood; a son, J. David Beall of Frankford, DE; two daughters, Phyllis B. Policicchio of Davidsonville and Lisa L. Lephew of Annapolis; a step-daughter, Sherri Passarell of Cumberland; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Rypel, Jacqueline Segura, Allan C. Stone, Jr., Alex Passarell, Stephanie Camarena, Andrew W. Stevens, Natalie Ellison and Jon Passarell and 14 great-grandchildren.

Erika Hayley Grice “Gerta”, age 20, a resident of south county, died on Monday, July 8.
 
Born on October 2, 1992 in Annapolis, Erika graduated from North Dorchester High School in 2010, where she starred in the school’s production of Peter Pan. She worked at Skipper's Pier, The Twisted Bead and most recently as a nanny for a loving family and a barista at Whole Foods. She enjoyed photography, drawing, painting, acting, performing, dancing, making jewelry, being outdoors, camping and spending time with her family.
 
She is survived by her parents, Elisabeth (Chad) Muse and Sean (Jennifer Boertlein) Grice; sisters, Ryan (Nick) Caparella and Sarah Grice; brothers, Mark (Karen) Fones and Jeffrey (Iselin) Fones; grandparents, Derek and Brenda Grice, Frank and Elly Black, Dick and Meg Shrum and Kerry Muse; uncles, Steven (Debbie) Grice, Glenn (Marian) Shrum, Rick Shrum, Christopher Shrum; aunt Katharine Shrum and so many other nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gene Hong Lee, a 13 year resident of Annapolis and previously of Cheverly, died on July 6, 2013 at his residence from complications of Parkinson’s disease. 

Gene, who was born January 31, 1923 in China, served in the US Navy during World War II. Gene loved fishing, gardening and being an artist.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years Wai Kom; four children, Dr. Albert Lee of Annapolis, Florence Chan of New York City, NY, Faye Kemon of Naples, FL and Carlene Lee of Greenbelt; 6 grandchildren Andrew and Matthew Lee of Annapolis, David Chan of Philadelphia, PA, Paul Seto of Elkridge, Timothy Seto of Parkville, and Stephanie Chan of New York City, NY.

Richard James Sandleman, of Annapolis, died at Anne Arundel Medical Center on July 6, 2013. He was 64.
 
Born June 28, 1949 in Albany, NY, he graduated from Prince George's Community College. Richard was employed as a respiratory therapist at University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore and worked at Sandy Point State Park. He was a member of Lanham United Methodist Church and enjoyed American civil war and world history and continuing his education. Richard was a volunteer EMT with the Prince George's County Fire Department during the 1970's and recently volunteered at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
 
He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy B. Sandleman.
 
Richard is survived by his father, Marcus A Sandleman and his wife, Julie of Annapolis; a sister, Laura S. Danner and her husband, Raymond of Riva; and one step-sister, Mary Ellen Burns of Berkeley, CA.

Eladia Leigh Parrilla, 39, a 13 year resident of Edgewater, previously of Bowie Maryland, died on July 4 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
 Born May 30, 1974 in New York City to the late Freddy and Carrie Parrilla, she was a 1992 graduate of Bowie High School, where in her senior year she was voted homecoming queen. Ellie received a Bachelor's degree in Social Work from the University of Maryland and later earned her Master's degree in Special Education from the University of District Columbia.
 Ellie taught Special Education at Hart Middle School for 10 years and most recently at Bates Middle School. 
Ellie's interests included spending time with her nephews, cooking, reading, gossip magazines, watching reality shows, and spending time in the outdoors.
 Ellie is survived by her two sisters; Taren K. Parrilla of Edgewater and Jelene (Edwin) Jorge of Bamberg, Germany, one brother, Milton Gouch, III of Largo, Maryland and her longtime companion Scott Cutlip. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews; Krystal, Lucas, Elijah, Edwin, Jr., Tatiana, Jazmine, Justin, Sarah, Nyla, Claire, Callie and Shyann.

James "Jimmy" Lee Aisquith, of Davidsonville, died on July 4, 2013 at the Mandrin Chesapeake Inpatient Care Center after a lengthy illness.
 Born December 24, 1962 in Annapolis, he graduated from South River High School. Jimmy was employed as a technician in the oceanography department at the United States Naval Academy for 28 years. He was a member of the Annapolis Moose Lodge and enjoyed hunting, camping and driving ATV's.
 He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Smith.
 Jimmy is survived by his wife of 28 years, Terri L. Aisquith; one son, James Lee Aisquith, Jr. of Davidsonville; two sisters, LaDonna (Dan) Morrison of Davidsonville and Johnnie (Eric) Hickman of Hagerstown; his parents, Percy L. and Mary "Nana" Aisquith of Edgewater and Sharon Michael of Greensboro; his grandmother, Frances Willy of Whitman. He is also survived by many other relatives and friends.

Christopher Alexander McAuley died on Tuesday July 2, 2013, a month short of his 70th birthday. Beloved son of Charles and Fay McAuley, with whom Chris will join in eternal rest. Chris is survived by his younger sisters Margaret Williams and Mariellen Pemberton, by his younger brother Charles McAuley, by 7 nieces/nephews, and by 4 grand nieces/nephews. Chris was born in the Brooklyn NY, later moving to the Annapolis, MD area where he resided for close to 40 years. Chris was a longtime usher at St. John Neumann Catholic Church of Annapolis and was a regular at the Arnold Senior Center.

J. Ross Voorhees, 58, of Edgewater, died at George Washington University Hospital on July 2, 2013.
 
Born in Niskayuna, NY, Ross received his bachelor and master degrees from Indiana University. He was a Senior Environmental Scientist employed by Stantec Consulting Services Inc., (formerly Greenhorne & O'Mara). An avid race fan, he attended almost all the Indy 500 races since 1968. He was past and present President of South River Park Community Association. He enjoyed fishing, boating, waterskiing, cooking, history and antiques.
 
Ross is survived by his parents Donald and Marie Voorhees of Clermont, FL, sister Toni Voorhees of Wheaton, Ill, children, Dashiell R. Voorhees (Tatiana) of Morgantown, WV, Aurelia L. Voorhees of Edgewater and Oscar Voorhees of Culver, IN; and fiancé Lynne Kyle.

Michael George “Big P” McClellan, 69, a 43-year resident of Riva, MD died Monday, July 1, at his home following a 3-year illness.
 
Born on November 2, 1943 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Howard McClellan and Helen Elnitsky, Mike graduated from West Catholic High School in Philadelphia. He served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force and was awarded the Air Force Good Conduct medal. Following his military service, Mike completed a 50-year career as both a Federal employee and contractor working for the U.S. National Security Agency.
 
Mike was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Annapolis, Knights of Columbus Council 1384, Phoenix Society and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. An avid sports fan, Mike coached the Davidsonville Gators youth football team and most enjoyed the time he spent with his grandchildren.
 
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Janice Kay McClellan; son, Michael P. (Stephanie) McClellan of Odenton, MD; two daughters, Cheryl (Keith) Tydings of Gambrills, MD and Cathleen (Brian) Liberatore of Davidsonville, MD; two sisters, Helen Shwaluk of Sicklerville, NJ and Mary Jane Schank of Pilesgrove, NJ; four grandsons, Hunter Tydings, Tyler and Trevor Liberatore, and Breckin McClellan; and granddaughter, Delaney Tydings.

Defrona “Dee” Smith, who spent forty-one years as owner of the Edgewater Hair Salon, died July 1 at her home of sixty years in Edgewater Beach. She was 96. 
In the early 1950’s Dee and Irv met in Washington, D.C. while learning to ballroom dance. In 1952 Dee Lucado married F. Irvin Smith and they moved to Edgewater Beach. Irvin died in 2002 after more than fifty years of marriage.
 In 1956 Dee opened the Edgewater Beauty Salon and was a successful businesswoman her entire life. She worked into her 70’s. Dee was always known to be beautifully well dressed, perfectly coiffed- and always the lady. 
Dee was born in Appomattox, Virginia, next to the youngest of 13 children. She was preceded in death by all her siblings, including brother, Gilbert who lived to be 103 and sister, Pauline who lived to be 97.
 She is survived by her loving daughter, Diane Lucado and her husband, Gregory Stanley and loving daughter, Patricia Kogok whose husband Henry Kogok died in 2006 after twenty seven years together.

Thomas D. Bissett, Sr., a 38-year resident of Edgewater, died on Saturday, June 29 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis. Born in Washington, D.C. to the late William and Georgia Bissett, Tom graduated from Western High School and served in the U.S. Army in France during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of American Legion Post 226 in Mayo, the Annapolis Moose Lodge 296 and the Annapolis Elks Lodge 622. In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his brother, Bob Bissett. Katherine Keyser Grooms-Bard, born February 26, 1972 at Cafritz Memorial Hospital, Washington, DC, died June 28, 2013 at University of Maryland Shock Trama Center. Baltimore, MD. Attended Good Shepard kindergarden, Waldorf, Md mastering reading and writing proficiently, St. Peters Catholic School, Waldorf, Md . with numerous awards including Presidential Academic fitness Award, several merit schlorships to St. Mary’s Ryken High School in Leonardtown, MD. Summer intern Artist at Washington College, Chestertown, MD. Swim teams and Southern Maryland Youth Organization member. Graduate of American University, Washington, DC with a B.A. in Political Science in 1994. Member of Gamma Delta Chapter of Phi Mu Fraternity. From the age of 10 participated in political campaigns with her father. She enjoyed political discourse, reading, swimming and activities with her beloved son, Stephen, Cousin, Christina Romeo and T.K. Powell. Her profession was in real estate/title/settlement areas and lastly, state licensed debt reduction services , becoming the top producer.

Una Mae McLean, “Mickie”, 85, a 37-year resident of Annapolis passed away on June 26, 2013 at the Halquist Memorial Inpatient Center in Arlington, Virginia.

She was born November 5, 1927, in Bluefield, West Virginia to the late George and Mary Blackwell, and attended school in Washington, D.C. Una Mae worked as a congressional assistant in the US House of Representatives, and retired from there after a 30 year career. 

She enjoyed planning reunions, genealogy and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence S. McLean, whom she married in 1952.

Una Mae is survived by her daughters; Cynthia (Peter) Bartolomeo and Jennifer (Timothy) Carnahan, her grandchildren; Melissa Shaffier, Amanda Shafer, Louisa Hood, Carolyn Halley, Matthew Carnahan, and Margaret and Angela Bartolomeo and her great-grandchildren, Haley, Raelynn, Kellen, Presley and Kendall.

On Tuesday, June 25, 2013, Evie Renz (Evelyn Panther Hooker), affectionately known as ViVi, passed on to the next world after a brave battle with her illness. Born in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Georgia and Herb Panther, Vivi lived in Northern Virginia during her elementary and middle school years. Her family moved to Davenport, Iowa where she graduated from Assumption High School. She attended Mary Crest College, the George Washington University, and obtained her degree from George Mason University. 
Vivi had a sterling 35-year career in the U.S. Government where she started as a GS-2 clerk typist. She retired in 1994 after working her way up to Executive Officer for a newly formed Bureau at the U.S. Agency for International Development. This Bureau was responsible for providing aid to the newly independent states formed by the dissolution of the Soviet Union. After her government career, she taught introductory computer courses at Anne Arundel Community College for a few years before placing all her energy into charities and social clubs, at which she held various positions and offices. She worked tirelessly for the Severn Town Club, the Annapolis Garden Club, the Assistance League and the community book club. She derived particular pleasure from her work as a puppeteer for children. 
Over the years she advanced her skills with cooking and attended cooking school in Italy. She loved preparing meals for the great parties she adored to host, whether it be for 3 or 50. Her Cinco de Mayo Party of 2012 was possibly one of her best.
 She was a truly amazing, kind, and generous woman; loved by everyone who met her. She amassed many friends from all walks of life. Evie’s smile, spirit for life, and kindness will always be remembered and so missed. 
She leaves behind her daughter, Michele Johnson; her son, Sean Hooker; three granddaughters, Lucy and Caroline Johnson and Sydney Hooker; her siblings, Ellen Dolan, Tom and Jim Panther and their families; her husband Steve Renz and a vast group of friends.
 A memorial service will be held at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater Maryland on Saturday, July 27th at 1:00PM followed by a celebration of her life with a buffet reception. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to The Severn Town Club, P.O. Box 572, Annapolis, MD 21404, or to your favorite charity.

On Tuesday, June 25, 2013; the beloved wife of the late Leon E. Wedding, Jr.; mother of Catherine Wedding, Trudie(Ray) Cora, Leon E. "Sandy"(Jan) Wedding III; grandmother of Shannon, Jason, Caryn, Chris, Rosie and Gordon. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to Barbara's Life Celebration at the GEORGE P. KALAS FUNERAL HOME, P.A., 6160 Oxon Hill Rd., Oxon Hill, MD on Monday, July 8 from 6 to 8 pm, where funeral services will held on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at 11:30 am. Interment Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, Md. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Humane Society of Charles County or the charity of one’s choice.
