David Alan Dryer, age 99, a resident of Ginger Cove in Annapolis, MD since 1999 and a veteran of World War II, died on November 2, 2008, at Anne Arundel Medical Center. 


He was born on October 20, 1909 in Washington, DC to the late Adelbert and Vernah Dryer. He attended the George Washington University where he received both his BA and MA degrees. 


He worked primarily for the Children's Bureau of the U.S. Department of Labor on enforcement of child labor laws. On May 3, 1939, he entered the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant in the Quartermaster Corps. He served at Ft. Lee, VA and spent 29 months in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations (North Africa, Sicily, Corsica, Italy), returning to the U.S. in March 1946. He later joined the Army Reserve from which he retired as a Lt. Colonel. 


He was employed by the Veterans Administration as a Training Officer; the Office of Chief of Finance for the Department of the Army; the Office of the Inspector General of the U.S. Transportation Corps; and the Inspector General Office of the Army Materiel Command where he retired in December 1966. Upon retirement, he and his wife moved from Washington, DC to Edgewater, MD in 1967 where they remained until moving to Ginger Cove. 


His interests included woodworking, reading, crossword puzzles, travel and church activities. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Annapolis, MD, where he and his wife sang in the choir for many years. He was a Master Mason, a member of Annapolis Lodge #89, a 32nd degree member of the Scottish Rite, Knight of the Commandery of the York Rite and a Shriner of Boumi Temple, Baltimore, MD. He was also a member of Annapolis Chapter #121 of National Sojourners, Inc. and a member of Chapter #46, Order of the Eastern Star of Annapolis. 


He is survived by his wife, Frances M. Dryer, whom he married on November 23, 1957, his nephew, Stanley G. Green, of Ginger Cove and his great nephew, Steven M. (Christy) Green, of Edgewater, MD. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy G. Green and Mildred V. Dryer. 


Visitation will be on Thursday, November 6, from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. and 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1300 West Street, Annapolis, MD, where services will be held on Friday, November 7, at 11:00A.M. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suitland, MD.

George â€œBuddyâ€ LeCompte, 81, a 12-year resident of Port Charlotte, FL, and previously of Annapolis, MD, died on November 2 in Port Charlotte of natural causes. He was born on May 14, 1927 in Washington, DC to the late Irving and Naomi LeCompte. He attended St. Martins, Langley and McKinley Tech High Schools. He was a graduate of Bliss Electrical (now Montgomery College) and American University. 


He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and the U.S. Merchant Marine. He worked for PEPCO and later as Customer Engineer for IBM Corporation where he worked for 36 years. After his retirement in 1987, he worked as a Teacher's Aide at Tall Oaks High School in Prince George's County. 


He was a member of San Antonio Catholic Church in Port Charlotte and previously of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Annapolis. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #12456, Elk's Lodge #2763 and the American Legion Post 110. After his family, his second greatest love was golf and watching soccer. He was one of the founding members of the New Carrollton Soccer program in the 1970's. 


He is survived by his wife, the former Margot Graessle from Wurzburg, Germany; his children, Christopher LeCompte of St. Petersburg, FL, Denise LeCompte of San Francisco, and Terrence LeCompte of Crofton, MD; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He is also survived by one sister, Margaret Jenkins of Silver Spring, MD. He was preceded in death by five siblings: Ruth Trimble, Betty Shenk and Jean, Gerry and Robert LeCompte.

Brenda Carol Adams



Brenda â€œNaNaâ€ Carol Adams, 51, of Riva, died Sunday November 2, 2008 at Anne Arundel Medical Center from liver disease after a one year illness.

Mrs. Adams was born December 24,1956, in Kansas City, Kansas. She was a waitress at Mike's Crabhouse Restaurant in Riva since 1998.




Survivors include her husband the late Robert L. Adams who died in May 2006, her daughters, Brandy Einstein of Riva and Nicole Thomson-Carey of New Providence, RI., her sisters, Robin Kuykendall and Connie Gregory both of Saugus, CA. and her brother, Brett Gregory of California. She is also survived by four grandchildren.

Francis â€œWinkâ€ Wingfield Langston, 71, a resident of Annapolis, MD for 15 years and previously of Westboro, MA, Cheshire, CT, New Haven, CT and Atlanta, GA died on October 31, 2008 at The Arbor at Baywood in Annapolis, MD of primary lateral sclerosis after a 6 year illness. 


Born on June 16, 1937 in Atlanta, GA he received his Bachelors of Science Degree from Yale University in 1959 and attended Harvard Law School. He worked in information technology most of his life; he retired from the Maryland State Retirement Agency in 2000 as the Chief Information Officer. He was an MP in the National Guard and was a Yale cheerleader. His memberships included Calvary Methodist Church, board member of Broadview Home Owners Association for 11years; treasurer of Annapolis International Club for 3 years; Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. His hobbies included skiing, whitewater canoeing, Navy games, reading, family, Maine and working outdoors. 


His was the beloved husband of Marcia Lloyd Langston, whom he married on August 27, 1960; father of Scott Langston of Jonesville, WI and Mark Langston of Portland, OR; brother of Ted Langston of Colorado and Arizona and Gayle Ricklefs of Augusta, GA; also survived by 3 grandchildren.

Dolores Marie Baumgardner Andersen, age 80, a 2-year resident of Cape Canaveral, FL and formerly of Annapolis, MD for 50 years, died on October 31, 2008 in Cape Canaveral after an 8-month battle with cancer. She was born on June 7, 1928 in Baltimore, MD to the late John David and Mildred Baumgardner. She graduated from Western High School in Baltimore in 1947. Dolores was a mother, wife and homemaker. She also was an antique dealer in the Baltimore-Washington Metro area for 45 years. She traveled extensively with her late husband. They visited all 50 states as well as Europe, South America, Central America, Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean Islands. In addition, Dolores enjoyed reading, gardening and history. She was a Lioness in Annapolis, a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Annapolis and the Cocoa Beach Community Church in Cocoa Beach, FL. 


On November 25, 1948, she married Norman R. Andersen who died in 2006. She was the mother of Deborah Houghton of Annapolis, MD, Kathy Andersen-Smith of Cape Canaveral, FL, and the late Linda Andersen. She is also survived by one grandson, David Andrew Smith of Durham, NC, one brother, John David Baumgardner, Jr. of Newport, ME and one sister, Mary Viola Mullen of Moorehead, KY

Timothy "TJ" Aloysius Desmond, Jr., a 29 year resident of Davidsonville, died on October 30, 2008 at Anne Arundel Medical Center from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle accident. TJ was 29. 

Born January 20, 1979, in Annapolis, MD, TJ attended South River High School. He worked for Quest Service group as a Project manager in Retail Construction.
 
TJ was an avid Washington Redskin fan. He loved his Rottweiler, Maggie and enjoyed shooting pool, and flying. TJ was very quick witted and he had a great sense of humor.
 
TJ had recently told his family that he would like it this year, if they did not exchange gifts with each other, but rather go to the Annapolis Mall and pick names off the Salvation Army's Angel Tree instead. It was something that he did every year and enjoyed a lot. Last year he purchased a Tonka truck for a child whose name he picked off the tree, and it reminded him of when he was a little boy.

 TJ is survived by his parents Tim and Jean Desmond, Sr. of Davidsonville, MD, his sisters Amy Bolton of Woodstock, GA and Carrie Desmond of Edgewater, MD.

Paul Donald White Paul Donald White died on Wednesday October 29, 2008 in Owings, MD. Born in Athens, PA, Paul was a 1962 graduate of Penn State University. Frederick â€œFredâ€ Charles Derr, 75, a resident of Arnold, MD for over 35 years died on October 28, 2008 at Tate Hospice House in Linthicum, MD of natural causes after a lengthy illness. 


Born on March 28, 1933 in Buck Run, PA, he was employed as a dental technician, retiring in 1998. He was in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1956; he was stationed in Brooklyn, NY and Montgomery, AL. He was a member of St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Annapolis, MD. Mr. Derr's hobbies included model railroading, WWII history and cruise vacations. 


He was the beloved husband of Antoinette Kaspar Derr, whom he married on June 12, 1954; father of Charles Derr of Annapolis, MD, Debra Schoonmaker of Dunkirk, MD and Cathy Derr of Severna Park, MD; brother of Donald Derr of Gainesville, VA; also survived by 3 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

Bruce N. Rogers, Jr., age 50, a 10-year resident of Crofton, MD, died on October 19, 2008 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was born in El Paso, TX on February 23, 1958. Bruce attended Salisbury University and the Lincoln Technical Institute in Columbia, MD. Bruce served in the U.S. Navy from 1979 to 1989. Most recently Bruce was employed by the Coca Cola Co. He was a history buff who loved to read. Bruce is survived by his son, Justin N. Rogers, who is serving in the U.S. Army and is stationed in Italy; his parents, Bruce N. and Phyllis Rogers of Heritage Harbour; his brother, Scott Rogers of Ft. Algie B. Murphy, Jr. passed away on Sunday, October 19. Morris Schulman 


Morris â€œMoâ€ Schulman, a 58 year resident of Annapolis and previously of Monticello, New York, died on October 18, 2008 at his home after a short illness, He was 83. 


Born February 7, 1925 in Monticello, NY to the late Louis and Esther Schulman, he graduated from Monticello High School and later from the University of Colorado. Mo worked as a mechanical engineer for the U.S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Internal Combustion Engine Laboratory in Annapolis, MD. 


Morris served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and received the Purple Heart. He also received the European African Middle East Service Medals, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. 


Morris was a member of the Jewish War Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge. He was past chairman of the Society of Automotive Engineers, Baltimore Section, and a member for 57 years. 


Mo enjoyed spending time with his many friends, defending animal rights causes, and Cars, Cars and more cars. 


Morris is survived by his sister Helen Schulman of Sun City Center, FL, his nephew and niece Mark and Jill Schulman of Monticello, NY, his niece Samantha Schulman Lara and her husband Donald of Wurtsboro, NY, sister in law Estella Schulman of Coconut Creek, FL and brother in law Irving Meyer of Debary, FL. Morris was predeceased by his brothers Max and David Schulman, his sister Frieda and his loving companion Marie Velenovsky.

James E. Barber, Jr., â€œTedâ€, 55, of Edgewater, MD died on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008 at his home after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born in Attleboro, Mass. on October 1, 1953, Ted was the son of James E. and Rosamond (Wellman) Barber of Wrentham, Mass. He graduated from Brown University with degrees in Engineering and Business. 


Ted worked as a computer software engineer for many years. Most recently he was employed by Pyramid Builders in Annapolis, MD where he was a project manager who was also involved in the strategic planning for the future of the company. An avid Boston Red Sox fan, Ted also enjoyed architecture, woodworking, billiards, snow skiing and waterskiing. 


Ted was the beloved husband of Susan Barber, whom he married on April 14, 2005. He is also survived by two stepsons: Nicholas and Zachery Cerverizzo of Edgewater, MD; and three sisters: Susan Derus of Milwaukee, WI, Rosamond Barber of New York, NY and Ellen Barber of Melbourne, Australia. He was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Barber.

Mildred Louise Hagert Proctor

1923-2008



 

Mildred L. Hagert was born in Emerado, North Dakota, on August 10, 1923 to Gust and Bertha Hagert, who immigrated from Sweden and Norway, respectively, in the 1890s. She was the youngest of seven siblings, grew up on the family farm and graduated from Central High School in Grand Forks. She was attending the University of North Dakota during World War II when she met her future husband, Army Air Corps Staff Sergeant James H. Proctor. He was attending flight school and billeted at the UND campus when he met this stunning blonde farm girl and promptly fell in love. Following a whirlwind courtship which included Sergeant Proctor buzzing the Hagert farmstead and dropping love notes from his trainer aircraft (and almost running into the windmill one night), the two eloped on August 10, 1943.

Mildred embraced the life of a military wife and accompanied her new husband to his military training in Georgia, North Carolina and Florida before he deployed as a glider pilot to the Pacific Theater. When her first son, James, was born at Fort McPherson, Georgia in 1944, Mildred became a full-time dedicated mom. After Lt Proctor returned from WWII, her second son, Richard, was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota in 1947. Her third son, Michael, was born in 1949 at Fort Devens, Massachusetts.

In 1950 Mildred and her family sailed aboard the troopship S.S. Cristobal from New York City to Panama, for a four-year tour at Fort Kobbe, Panama Canal Zone. Growing up in Panama was high adventure for the Proctor children, and Mildred was key to their participation in all sorts of activities, including swimming, capturing escaped parakeets, hiking the Las Cruces Trail across the isthmus, horseback riding on El Volcan, or searching for golden frogs or square trees (both exist) in El Valle. In this tropical land, her many orchids and other tropical flowers were testimony to her farmer's green thumb

In 1954 the Proctor family flew from Panama to New Orleans in a twin-engine C-47 (DC-3) and a new assignment at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, where daughter Claudia was born in 1956. Mildred grounded her children with core values, church, scouting and education and reinforced the importance of family with annual trips to visit cousins in Connecticut, North Dakota, Mississippi and Georgia. She was very involved with the Wright Patt Officers Wives Club and volunteered her time with their thrift shop.

Mildred's last military move was in 1958, when Lt. Col Proctor was transferred to Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland. The Proctors joined Corkran Memorial United Methodist Church, and she volunteered there as well as with the Andrews Officers Wives Club Thrift Shop and her children's schools libraries. The Proctor children graduated from different high schools in Maryland and moved across the country and around the world pursuing school and careers. In time, the Proctor family grew to include spouses Leigh Anna, Danny and Kathleen and grandchildren Rhett, Desiree, Joshua, Leigha and Jennifer. No matter how far away, all family members always knew where home was because Mildred Proctor was the lighthouse that guided their lives as a devoted mother, wife, home-maker, mentor, friend and grandmother. She always thought about others first, and her proudest accomplishment was in successfully guiding the personal development of her four children.

On October 16, 2008, Mildred passed away in the peaceful beauty of her beautiful home on Still Pond Creek in Worton, Maryland. Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jim Sr., she will rejoin him in Arlington National Cemetery. Mildred is survived by James, Kathleen and Jennifer Proctor; Richard Proctor; Michael, Leigh Anna, Rhett, Desiree and Leigha Proctor; and Claudia, Danny and Joshua Walters.

Relatives and friends are invited to Mrs. Proctor's Life Celebration at Corkran Memorial United Methodist Church, 5200 Temple Hill Rd., Temple Hills, MD 20748 on Wednesday, November 5, 2008 from 9:30 am until time of service at 10am. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mrs. Proctor's memory to your local Salvation Army or to the USO, USO World Headquarters, Department WS, P.O. Box 96860, Washington, DC 20090-6860.
