Melvyn "Mel" David Blume, 72, a resident of Edgewater for 18 years and formerly of Potomac, died of cancer Sept. 22 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a six-week illness. 


The son of Celia Blume of Silver Spring and the late Louis Blume, Mr. Blume was born June 7, 1935, in Washington, D.C., and served in the Washington, D.C., National Guard. 


He worked in the printing industry as a graphic designer for 45 years. He also worked at the Pentagon for two years in city planning and most recently for Comanco as a property manager. 


For six years he was president of the River Oaks Homeowners Association and for eight years was president of the Annapolis Landing Homeowners Association. He also served on the board and was past president of the South River Federation and on the board for First Night Annapolis. He was a member of many other boating and aviation associations. 


His interests included creating stained glass works of art, boating and aviation. 


In addition to his 100-year-old mother, surviving are his wife, Pauline Blume, whom he married Aug. 18, 1966; three sons, Paul Blume of District Heights, Alan Blume of Bethesda and Charles Blume of Silver Spring; and five grandchildren. He was the father of Michael Blume, who died in 2005. 


Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. Burial is private.

Anne I. Cleaver, 83, a resident of the Annapolis area for 29 years, died of complications from Alzheimer's disease Sept. 21 at the Assisted Living Well in Millersville after a five-year illness. 


Born May 11, 1924, in Pittsburgh, Pa., Mrs. Cleaver graduated from Muse, Pa., High School as the valedictorian. 


She was a homemaker and retired from the U.S. District Court. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Davidsonville, where she volunteered for many years. Her interests included crossword puzzles, travel and gardening. 


Surviving are her husband, C. Edward Cleaver, whom she married in 1944; three sons, Stu Cleaver of Severn, Kenneth Cleaver of Davidsonville and Ron Cleaver of Fairfax Station, Va.; two sisters, Agnes McAllen of Cameron, Mo., and Katherine Streeter of Fredericksburg, Va.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Her daughter, Mary Cleaver, died in 1975. 


Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 W. Central Ave., in Davidsonville. Burial will be in Gates of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring.

Michael Eric "Mike" Barr, 56, a resident of Edgewater for 23 years and formerly of Riva, died of kidney cancer Sept. 19 at home after a three-year illness. 


Born in Wytheville, Va., on April 25, 1951, and the son of Anna May Machin of Bristol, Va., and the late Jessie Noah Barr, Mr. Barr graduated in 1970 from Washington and Lee High School in Arlington, Va. 


He worked as chief of logistics for the Air Force Real Property Agency in Rosslyn, Va., for 23 years. 


He was a car enthusiast and toy collector and was interested in films, books and restoring vintage cars. 


In addition to his mother, surviving are his wife, Patricia M. Barr, whom he married Feb. 17, 1973; one son, Eric M. Barr of Edgewater; two daughters, Tessa M. Barr of San Rafael, Calif., and Meliza Y. Borbonus of Pasadena; two brothers, Timothy Barr of Edgewater and Dennis Barr of Tennessee; and five grandchildren. 


Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 29 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1875 Ritchie Highway. Burial is private.

Services for Connor Andrew Brock Carmichael, 3-month-old son of Andrew S. and Ashley M. Carmichael of Crofton, were held on September 21, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in West River. Burial was in the church cemetery. 


Connor died Sept. 18 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. The cause of death is pending. 


Born June 11 at Anne Arundel Medical Center, he was a happy child who loved watching his older brother and being outdoors, his family said. 


In addition to his parents, surviving are his brother, Ethan Andrew Scott Carmichael; and his grandparents, Scott W. and Jennifer Carmichael, Richard L. Tang and Heather J. Tang, all of Crofton, and Tracy A. Murray and Teri Murray, both of Denton.

Mr. William D. Gray, Jr., better known as Bill Gray, died at his home in Oxon Hill, MD on September 18, 2007 from complications of lung cancer. He was 79 years of age. He is survived by his wife, Jean B. Gray of Oxon Hill MD, his son, Robert H. Gray and daughter-in-law, Georgia Emery Gray of Washington, DC. His daughter, Debbie died, in 1998 leaving two grandchildren, Andrew and Heidi, as well as, a son-in law, Ken Gradall of Baraboo WI. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Thomas B. Agerton, Jr. of Winter Haven, Florida, his nephew,, Thomas B. Agerton III of Hayesville, North Carolina and his niece, Carole Moorman of Winter Haven, Florida. 


Bill was a native of Winter Haven, Florida, where he attended public schools, graduating in the high school class of 1946. He attended Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina, for a year and a half on a Navy scholarship and served one year on active duty as a midshipman. During the Korean conflict he joined the United States Army and earned Military Occupational Specialties (M.O.S.'s) as a combat infantryman, tank commander and artillery forward observer. In 1955 he graduated from Florida State University with a major in political science and a minor in history; thereafter, he spent twelve years working for three state agencies in Tallahassee, Florida. 


Mr. Gray began his career as a civilian personnel manager in Washington DC in 1967. Prior to his retirement in 1989, Mr. Gray was head of civilian personnel operations at the headquarters of the Chief of Naval Research. His service in Washington also included the organization and staffing of the headquarters of the Pay Board in Phase II of President Richard Nixon's Economic Stabilization Plan. Mr. Gray was a sailing enthusiast. He participated in sailboat races on the Potomac and on the Chesapeake Bay for several decades. He was also a member of Gray Memorial Methodist Church in Tallahassee, Florida.

On Tuesday September 18, 2007 at her home in Severn, MD where she lived for 32 years. She graduated from St. Cecilias Academy in Washington, D.C. Joanne worked for the National Security Agency from 1965-1984. 


An avid Redskins fan, she also enjoyed playing Bingo, Pinnochle and Poker. 


Joanne is survived by her husband Edward F. Walsh, whom she married in 1974, and one sister Kathleen Vermillion of Gambrills, MD.

Gary Norman McNamara passed awaty on Sunday September 16, 2007 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore after a 3 month illness. 


A resident of Annapolis for 25 years, he was a graduate of DuVal High School in Greenbelt, MD. He was self employed owning Exquisite Lawn Care Landscaping, he also did home repairs. 


His interests included music, playing his guitars and reading. 


He is survived by his mother Bette L. Mcnamara of Annapolis and one brother Paul Joseph McNamara, Jr. of Annapolis. He is the brother of the late Joseph A. Mcnamara who died on December 26, 2006. 


Services and Interment are private.

Anna Marie Simpson 68, of Naples, FL passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 12, 2007. Anna had been a resident of Naples for the past 10 years coming from Oxon Hill, MD. She was born October 24, 1938 in Dunbar, PA the only child of George W. and Helen A. (nee Maddas) Baker. She received her nursing degree and at one time worked at Walter Reed Army Hospital in the VIP wing. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Naples and a former member of St. Columba Catholic Church in Oxon Hill. In Oxon Hill, she served as the President of the Parish Council and was involved designing the new church. She is survived by her loving husband, Benjamin A. Simpson of Naples, FL; three children, Karla A. (William D., Jr.) Curry of Colesville, CA, Theresa E. (Benjamin J.) Shupe of Waterford, VA and Benjamin A. (Meredith H.) Simpson, Jr. of Springsfield, VA. She also leaves behind two grandchildren, William D. Curry, III and Christopher L. Curry of Colesville, CA. David A. Kroner Sr., 59, a resident of Severna Park for 27 years, died of a heart attack Sept. 12 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. 


Mr. Kroner was born Oct. 22, 1947, in Baltimore, and received a bachelor of science degree in engineering from the University of Florida. He was a quality engineer for most of his life. 


Mr. Kroner was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Severna Park. He enjoyed Ocean City, horse racing, schaunzers and taking his two granddaughters to fairs and movies. 


Also surviving are his wife, Peggy A. Kroner, whom he married Dec. 11, 1970; one son, David A. Kroner Jr. of New Britain, Conn.; three daughters, Kimberly Krauss of Catonsville and Colleen and Ann Marie Kroner, both of Severna Park; and three brothers, Donald, Daryl and Doug Kroner, all of Catonsville.

Ellwood "Mose" Allenbaugh, 75, a resident of Arnold for 37 years, died of natural causes Sept. 10 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore after a lengthy illness. 


Mr. Allenbaugh was born in Baltimore on Feb. 25, 1932, and served in the Army during the Korean War. He retired from the former Westinghouse Electric Co. where he was an inspector for many years. 


He was a member of American Legion Post 175 in Severna Park and the Broadneck Elks. He enjoyed carpentry work and was devoted to his family. 


The widower of Helen M. Allenbaugh, he is survived by two sons, Michael L. and Guy D. Allenbaugh, both of Arnold; one sister, Doris Orem of Baltimore; and two grandsons.

Edmund Joseph "Ed" Gutowski, 86, a resident of Annapolis for 20 years and formerly of Rockville, died Sept. 8 at home.

Born Feb. 1, 1921, in East Hampton, Mass., Mr. Gutowski graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy in 1943 with a degree in marine engineering. 


Mr. Gutowski worked for the Navy Department and retired as a commander after 24 years of service. In 1983 he began GMT, Inc., an engineering and consulting company. He was a member of the Association of Senior Engineers and the American Society of Naval Engineers. 


Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Gutowski; two daughters, Linda Lopez of Orlando, Fla., and Patricia Lance of Denver; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. 


Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater.
