Barbara Joan Callender 1949-2025

Barbara “Joan “Callender, 76, of Edgewater, Maryland, died on September 13th, 2025.

She was born in 1949 in Annapolis, Maryland, to Thomas Collison III and Eleanor Collison(Leitch). Their only daughter of six children, her brothers- Thomas, Ronald, Gary, Larry, and Jeff Collison. She attended Annapolis High School. In 1972, she married Walter Wayne Callender, and they were married for 53 years. 

She worked for JF Johnson Lumber Company for 45 years and was Secretary of the Corporation, Corporate Accounting Specialist, and a shareholder. 

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Brothers- Thomas, Ronald, Gary, and Jeff Collison. She is survived by her husband, Walter Wayne Callender; son, George Wesley Callender, and his wife, Tammy Simmons-Callender; granddaughters, Megan and Victoria Callender; brother, Larry Collison; and nieces and nephews. 

A Celebration of Life will be held by the family on October 5th at Adams Tap House and Grille, Kent Island, 1-3 pm. Instead of flowers, the family asks for donations to the American Cancer Society as Joan bravely fought several types of cancer for over 30 years.

James Daniel “Danny” Chumley, 67, of Oxon Hill, MD, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 12, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on April 16, 1958 in Washington, DC, Danny was known throughout his life for his friendliness, his open heart, his giving nature, and his impeccable sense of humor.

Danny was the son of James C. (Jim) and Hazel W. Chumley, both who preceded him in death. He found his cherished, devoted partner in life with Patricia Ann (Pat) Chumley, who also preceded him in death.

From his union with Pat, Danny gained a son, Charles Roger (Chuck) Chumley. He is survived by Chuck and his wife Kimberly Ann, as well as his granddaughter Skylar Reese who just turned 25, and who he is so proud of. Shortly after graduating college, she opened her own business, Critter Cove in Harrisonburg, VA. Danny got a virtual tour of her place about a week before he went to Heaven. He is equally proud of his grandson Phoenix James who is 15 and a Sophomore in High School. Phoenix is active in the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) and he holds a Second Degree Black Belt in Karate.

Danny is also survived by his only sibling, his sister Terri Jane, and her husband Michael (Mike) Hicks. Terri will be 70 on her birthday and Danny quickly got tired of hearing her say ‘can you believe I’ll be 70 in December’. Terri and Mike gifted Danny with a nephew and a niece. David Talbert, his nephew, is 45 and he loves the demolition derby, both building the cars and driving in the derby. He has a son Steven James who will be 11 in February. Steven is in the 5th grade and is really doing well in school. Danny’s niece, Valerie Renee Hicks Marshall is 41 years old and is a Special Education teacher of 4 year-old autistic children. She is married to Thomas Marshall, Sr. who works in fire protection. They have 3 crazy sons, Thomas Jr. (TJ) who is 8, Michael Alexander (Mikey) who is 6, and James Christian who is 5. TJ enjoys school, and playing Minecraft and Roblox on his tablet with his cousins. Mikey and James enjoy competing in BMX bicycle racing.

Danny is also survived by his sister-in-law Linda Webb who was preceded in death by her husband Dennis Webb. Their son, Danny’s nephew, Brian Webb is married to Brittany and they have 2 sons, great-nephews Tyler, 10 and Jaxson, 4. He also has a great-niece Reagan Smith.

Danny has two aunts, and numerous first, second and third cousins, who he enjoyed spending time with whenever possible. And Danny has a bonus niece Gina Talbert and bonus great-nephews Roman, who just turned 17, and Colt who will be 11 in February.

Danny is a friend to everyone who meets him and has no enemies. He is a loyal friend and has a hysterical sense of humor, just like his dad. Many of the posts on his Face Book page included comments like Danny was such a good man, such a great man; Danny was a wonderful man; Danny was such a kind person, such an awesome person. He will be missed by all who knew him. The family will miss him like crazy, but on occasion we’ll miss the cooking skills he learned from his mother.

For nearly 50 years, Danny as well as many other family members have bowled in Duckpin Bowling Leagues. He was an officer in several leagues for many years. When his eyes got too bad for him to bowl, he remained a league secretary for the Hazel Chumley Seniors Memorial League.

Danny’s work career was in customer service in the printing industry. He made so many lifelong friends at his past places of employment, many who reached out or even visited him while he was in the hospital.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 19th 2025 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Saturday, September 20th 2025 at 10:00 AM at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory (6160 Oxon Hill Rd, Oxon Hill, MD 20745). A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 20th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the same location. Family and friends will then proceed to Resurrection Cemetery, 8000 Woodyard Road, Clinton, MD 20735 for burial, followed by the repast at Danny's house. (721 Carson Avenue, Oxon Hill, MD 20745) Light lunch will be provided. If you know you'll be coming for lunch, please text me for a head count to 301-919-1575 no later than mid-day Friday. Rhonda Ann Turley, 60, of Forestville, Maryland, died September 12, 2025 in Annapolis, Maryland. Born July 15, 1965, in Southern Maryland, to Joseph Hall and Letitia Heyduk. 

She is an alumna of Fredrick Douglass High School, where she graduated in 1983. 

Rhonda loved all things horses, especially the mini horses her mother raised at her home years ago. She was a big animal lover and a friend to all strays who crossed her path, showing them love and affection by feeding and caring for them in her free time.

Rhonda loved romance novels, soap operas, and anything related to true crime, but especially the TV shows Snapped and Law & Order. Of everything, Rhonda’s favorite thing in the world to do was talk to the people she loved most, whether it was on the phone, debriefing the latest General Hospital episode, or checking in on how her friends’ days were, Rhonda loved it all.

Rhonda is survived by her parents, Joseph Hall and Letitia Heyduk; her five children, Brandon Turley and his wife, Jenna, Jenna Simmons and her husband, William, Shannon Schwartz and her husband, Michael and Cara and Alyssa Turley as well as her five grandchildren, Daniel Turley, Andrew Turley, Tiffany Simmons, Matthew Simmons, and Connor Simmons.

She was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Daniel Turley.

Today, we reflect on the life of George W. Perry affectionately known as “Pap”, born in Newberry, South Carolina to Mildred Perry on December 15, 1942. He sadly transitioned on September 12, 2025. George was raised by his grandmother, Estelle Perry, after his mom passed when he was just 7 years old. Estelle raised George and his sisters until her passing. 

George sang in the junior choir at St. Matthews Baptist Church and attended bible study at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Newberry, SC. He was a member of a local baseball team as well. Once he finished school, he worked at the Pepsi Cola Plant.

Shortly after the passing of his grandmother Estelle, George relocated to Washington, DC where he started his legacy. He was employed by a power washing company to establish stability in a new city and once he was established his family joined. George then started his long journey of employment with Halle Enterprises in October 1976 and retired in July 2025. There he established long lasting friendships and community support. 

George loved having a good time with family and friends. One of his favorite past times was watching wrestling and football. He will forever be known for his hard work and strong will to provide for his family. His contagious smile and made-up nicknames for everyone will never be forgotten!

He is preceded in death by his wife Lillie Mae Ruff, mother Mildred Perry, Grandmother Estelle Perry, two sisters (Dorothy Ann and Mary Lou). He leaves to cherish in his memory, his sons Jimel and Sherman Ruff, daughter in laws Veronica Ruff and Kim Harrod, two granddaughters Taneika and Debbie Ruff, three grandsons Jimel Jr, Vincent, and Nathaniel Ruff, eight great-grandchildren; Ramoni, D’Cari, Ramiya, Carlos, Rameera, Cam’ryn, Chloee, and Elias, nieces Cathie, Shannon and Miranda, and host of other great nieces/ nephews, family, and friends.

The world dimmed a little on September 11, 2025, when Nancy Lee Catterton Parlett passed away peacefully in the early morning hours, surrounded by the friends she called family. She was 91.

Born at Annapolis Hospital on May 30, 1934, Nancy proudly described herself as a 10th-generation South County farm girl, raised on her parents’ tobacco farms in Harwood, Maryland. She was the beloved daughter of Herbert T. and Alverta W. Catterton, and sister of Herbert W. Catterton.

After graduating from Southern High School in 1952 and attending Fleet Business School shortly thereafter, she married the love of her life, Leonard “Buddy” H. Parlett, Jr. Buddy built their beloved Parvilla home, where they started their family and their story together.
Nancy was a young model in Washington, D.C., appearing in print and billboard ads for Woodward & Lothrop, Garfinkel’s, and other elegant department stores, frequently traveling to New York for bridal shows. A natural beauty, she became known as much for her sparkling wit and adventurous spirit as for her flawless style. “I’ll try anything once,” she often said — and she meant it.

She smoked (back in the day), she sipped, she laughed loudly, and she lived boldly. Nancy learned to fly her own plane, jumped out of airplanes for the thrill of it, and traveled the world. She was a skier, both snow and water, and once even set a local record by gliding confidently on a slalom ski from the South River in Edgewater all the way to Solomon’s Island. It took five hours.

Part of most summers were reserved for her beloved Ocean City, where she grew up going as a girl and never stopped loving — the salt air, the boardwalk, and the ocean always calling her back.

She and Buddy shared a love of aviation until tragedy struck eleven years into their marriage in 1964, when he was killed in a plane crash just three miles from home. Left a widow at 30, with a 9-month-old developmentally disabled daughter, Susie, in her arms, Nancy carried on with remarkable courage and grace.

She went to work in Buddy’s family business, Arundel Gas and Water Conditioning, dedicating herself fully until her retirement in 1994. She provided Susie with the best schools and support, always enriching her and making her the center of her world.
Her passions were on the golf course and in the garden. Nancy was a master gardener who transformed her Edgewater property into a lush paradise of crepe myrtles, dogwoods, and countless blooms. “It will never be finished. There’s always more to do,” she often said, a philosophy that reflected both her garden and her zest for life.
Nancy was the life of every party. Her smile lit up rooms, her laugh roared like music, and her generosity overflowed to everyone. She loved her golf rounds, her cocktails, her gardens, her time at the beach, and above all, the people she gathered around her. To know Nancy was to be swept into her semi-chaotic orbit of laughter, kindness, adventure, and style.

Through everything, she was always impeccably stylish and poised: coiffed hair, chic wardrobe, and the timeless grace of an “old-world grande dame.” 
Always current with the latest trends, she delighted in fashion as much in her 90s as she did in her modeling days. She was known to arrive perfectly put together, whether stepping onto the golf course, attending a party, or just enjoying a casual day. Shopping was one of her joys — she never missed an opportunity to browse a boutique or flip through a glossy catalog. To the very end, Nancy treated life as an occasion worth dressing for.

Nancy was predeceased by daughter, Susie, who passed away on July 2, 2017, and by her brother, Herbert, who died in 2023.  Though Nancy carried those losses in her heart, she was never without love, laughter, and chosen family.
 
She is survived by her beloved friend Mary Wadland, who was truly like a second daughter to her; her friends like family, Susan Engles, Maura Hulsey, Patti Miller, Theresa Marker, Ollie Miller, and Ann King; her amazing caregiver Lianna Echevernia, her goddaughter, Wendy Carr, along with Pam and Jill Carr; and a joyful tribe of nieces and nephews, too numerous to count. Closest to home, she leaves behind her loyal cat, Elsa — who claimed the spot by her side every night — and her grand dog, Teddy. 

Friends are invited to celebrate Nancy’s life on Friday, September 26 at 1 p.m. at Davidsonville United Methodist Church, 819 W Central Ave, Davidsonville. Interment to follow in the church cemetery. Friends and family are encouraged to celebrate her remarkable life by following her own instructions, which say it best: “Don’t cry and feel like you have to wear black. It’s a party. Celebrate! I lived a heck of a life!”

Lester Hawes Fowler, 94, of Lothian, Maryland, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025.

Lester proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps from 1951 - 1954 and as a Korean Combat Veteran from March 1953 - July 1953, a role that shaped his lifelong values of honor, courage, and commitment. He carried those qualities into every part of his life, whether with family, friends, or community.

Above all, Lester was a devoted family man. He shared 71 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Doris Jean Fowler, a partnership built on love, strength, and faith. Together they raised five children: Lester Charles Fowler II, Charlene Mathesius, Barbara Jackson, Eileen Tenney, and Jennifer Rutrough.

Lester was blessed with nine grandchildren — Lenny Mathesius, Alyssa Crawford, Ashley Baker, James Mathesius, Rachel Jackson, Rebecca Jackson, Michael Tenney, Lauren Tucker, and Brian Rutrough — each of whom brought joy and pride into his life. He also cherished his great-grandchildren, Greyson Tucker and Brody Baker, who will carry forward his memory with love.

Lester will be remembered for his quiet wisdom, gentle humor, and unwavering love for his family. He touched the lives of many and leaves behind a legacy of devotion, honor, and kindness that will live on through those who loved him.

A celebration of Lester’s life will be held with family at a future time, and he will be laid to rest with military honors at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery.

Howard C. Williams, Jr., 73, of Fort Washington, MD, passed away on September 10, 2025. He was born on December 22, 1951, in Sylvania, Georgia, to the late Howard C. Williams, Sr. and Blanche M. Williams (Braboy).

Howard spent his early years in Columbus, Ohio, alongside his older sister, Stephanie. During their youth, the family lived abroad in Medan, Indonesia, after their father accepted a position overseas. Howard and Stephanie attended the American School in Singapore before returning to the United States, where he went on to graduate from Central State University.

After moving to Washington, D.C., Howard married and later welcomed his son, Howard C. Williams, III (“Trey”).

Howard had a deep love for the outdoors and could often be found driving through the park, hunting, or fishing. At home, he found joy in watching westerns—his beloved “cowboys”—as well as nature programs. He was also a fan of football and especially enjoyed the music of Billy Ocean. The song “Caribbean Queen” never failed to lift his spirits.

He is survived by his mother, Blanche; his sister, Stephanie; his son, Trey; and a host of cousins and extended relatives. Howard will be remembered for his humor, his love of nature, and the quiet joys of life that he cherished deeply.

Our mother, Myrna Dianne Harmon Goodwin, passed away on September 8, 2025, in Solomons, Maryland.  She was 86 years old.  

The daughter of a successful ranching family in eastern Montana, Myrna never forgot where she came from.  Born in 1939, she was one of eleven children and the youngest daughter of William and Gladys Harmon.  After graduating from Bainville High School, she earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from Minot State University in North Dakota.  There she met her future husband Ralph Goodwin, an Air Force officer stationed at Minot Air Force Base.   Together, they raised four children while living in Illinois, New York, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and then Vienna, Virginia, where they lived for 30 years.  Along the way, Myrna was a troop leader for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, and directed the youth choir in several churches.  No one was surprised when she was featured as mom of the year in The Clemmons Courier in 1972.  Myrna and Ralph and the kids also traveled in their Winnebago camper to all 48 of the continental United States plus Canada and Mexico.  Myrna loved to sing and she loved to teach, no matter the subject.  She had a strong Christian faith, and was an active member of the church throughout her life.  

Myrna made friends easily, an important skill since she started all over again in Alabama after she lost her husband of 42 years in 2007.  Her laugh was big and contagious, and attracted both the outgoing and the shy.   She was forthright about her views and occasionally ruffled feathers, including the time she encouraged the school audience to stand for her chorus’s performance of Lift Every Voice, the black national anthem.  

The role she loved the most was being Grams to her many grandchildren.  At 83, she was still having sleepovers with her delighted youngest grandson, giggling and telling stories under the covers late into the night.  Myrna is survived by her four children: Brenda Dixon (Bud), Dan Goodwin (Kate), Ralph Goodwin III, John Goodwin (Tina); her grandchildren Michael, Colton, Ralphie IV, Jessica, Savannah, and Luke; her siblings Rita Booth and David Harmon; 43 nieces and nephews; and numerous friends.  She loved and was loved by them all.  Gifts in her memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the Southern Poverty Law Center.  



It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Martha Elizabeth Karandy, 64, of Annapolis, Maryland. She departed this life peacefully on September 7, 2025.

Martha was a beloved wife and devoted mother. She leaves behind her husband, Eric Karandy; her daughter, Bernadette and her husband, Peter Fulweiler and her son, Konrad Karandy. She was the adoring grandmother of Bernadette and Peter's children, Peter and Ronan. Martha is also survived by her parents, Jack and Kathleen Mitchell, as well as her brothers, George, Sean and Kevin Mitchell.

A lifelong educator, Martha dedicated many years to teaching at St. Mary’s Elementary School, where she shaped the lives of countless children. Later, she pursued a second career as a Navy Training Specialist at Naval District Washington, bringing the same dedication and warmth to all her colleagues and community. 

Martha had a vibrant and charismatic personality, and always loved to laugh. Known as "Gammie", she loved to spend time with her beloved grandsons. She filled the lives of her family and friends with immeasurable love, joy, and laughter. 

A Memorial Mass will be offered on Friday, September 12 at 10:30 am at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Patricia Heyward Mora, age 34, passed away on September 5, 2025. She was born on February 27, 1991, in San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic, and brought light, love, and strength into the lives of all who knew her.

Patricia was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a beloved daughter, sister, and friend. She found her greatest joy in her family, especially in raising her children. She was a proud and nurturing mother to her sons — Austin, Dominique, and soon-to-arrive Amari, whom she was joyfully awaiting. Patricia was an outstanding homemaker and took great pride in caring for her home and family.

She dreamed of becoming a hairstylist, with a special talent and passion for braiding hair. Her creativity and warmth shone through everything she did. One of her proudest personal accomplishments was gaining confidence as a driver — especially when it came to chauffeuring her boys to where they needed to be, always with love.

Patricia is survived by her devoted husband, Davien; her sons, Austin, Dominique, and Amari; her loving mother, Cornelia; her sister, Paola; and her brothers, Pascual and Sandy.

Joyce Elaine (Bertrand) Sarkady

April 4, 1936-September 5, 2025

Our world dimmed on September 5, 2025 with the passing of our loving and devoted mother after a sudden and short illness. Joyce was born to Marie (Kimball) Bertrand and Alphonse Bertrand in Woodsville, NH, where she spent her childhood and graduated from Woodsville High School.  She was an outstanding basketball player and helped take her team to a state championship victory her senior year. After graduating from Northeastern University with a Bachelor of Science she worked as a medical technologist for over forty years in multiple hospitals and physician’s offices. Most recently she worked in, and ultimately retired from, the laboratory at Annapolis Oncology Center in Annapolis where she devoted herself to helping cancer patients, bringing smiles and laughter to their days, and becoming lifelong friends with many of her colleagues.  Joyce loved crossword puzzles, bike riding and playing tennis and golf.  She played golf through her mid-eighties and was a long-time member of the women’s league at Eisenhower Golf Course.  Joyce loved her friends and spending time with them; going to lunch, golfing and playing endless games of Rummikub. Joyce’s ultimate joy and love was her family.  She was extremely close with her brother who still resides in the same neighborhood, and with whom she spent many evenings and dinners together through the years.  She deeply loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; most happy to be included in all birthday and holiday celebrations.  She will always be remembered for her easy laugh, true humility and quiet strength; she is sorely missed.  Joyce is survived by her children, Lynne and Ken, her brother, Gordon, and her four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  She will be laid to rest in Horse Meadow Cemetery in Haverhill, NH.  


Willie Mae (Durham) Myer, 96, of Ocean City, Maryland, passed away peacefully surrounded by family.

Born on May 31, 1929, in Amarillo, Texas, Willie Mae grew up during the Dust Bowl era and at the age of 12 moved with her family to Washington, DC, where her father had taken a job at the Navy Gun Factory. While attending Chamberlain Vocational High School in Washington DC, she studied cosmetology and afterwards began working as a hairdresser until beginning a family of her own.

On May 14, 1949, she married the love of her life, Arthur Myer, and together they were blessed with three sons: Thomas, Daniel, and A. Timothy. Willie Mae also played an important role in the family’s plumbing business, faithfully taking calls and supporting Arthur for many years.

The Myers raised their family in Landover, Maryland, before building their dream home in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, where they lived for two decades. Later, they enjoyed a happy retirement in Ocean City, Maryland, a place that Willie Mae cherished deeply.

For many years, Willie Mae lovingly served in the nursery at her home church, Trinity Assembly of God, where she cared for and blessed countless families with her warmth and devotion.

Following Arthur’s passing, Willie Mae courageously managed the challenges of a lifelong genetic vision disease. In 2021, she moved to Edgewater, Maryland to live with her son and daughter-in-law, where she spent her final years surrounded by love and care.

Willie Mae will be fondly remembered for her love and devotion to Arthur, her deep affection for Ocean City, and her faithful service to her church community. She delighted in life’s simple pleasures (especially cookies, candies, and every sweet treat that brought joy to those around her), and she was a devoted wife, a loving mother, a treasured grandmother, and a proud great-grandmother whose love and legacy live on in the family she so dearly adored. Yet, above all, she will be remembered for her unwavering faith in the Lord, which shaped every part of her life and the way she loved others.

She is survived by her three sons: Thomas Myer (Nancy), Daniel Myer (Myrian—deceased), and A. Timothy Myer (Teri); nine grandchildren: Katherine Myer, Emily Bunch (Jarrett), Kevyn Myer, Deanna Curbeam (Emerson), David Myer, Adam Myer (Amanda), Noah Myer (Sarah), Hannah Myer, and Jacob Myer; and eight great-grandchildren Louisa, Imogen, Berkley, Griffin, Landon, Savannah, Magnolia, and Delaney.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnny Clyde Durham and Eulma Durham; her siblings, John Durham, Betty Faye Crampton, and Nancy Colandrea; and her granddaughter, Jessica.

Having served Christ as her Savior for a lifetime, Willie Mae longed for the day she would regain perfect vision and see Jesus face to face. Today, that longing is fulfilled as her faith has become sight. Her family takes comfort in knowing that, as Scripture reminds us in 2 Corinthians 5:8, “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord."

Imelda “Linda” Lynn Ireland, 63, passed away on September 1, 2025. Born on July 5, 1962 to the late Elise and Frank Ireland, Imelda was one of eighteen children. She was employed at Ginger Cove in Annapolis, MD for 30 years as a cook. She loved her work family. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing bingo and spending time with her beloved grandchildren. She also was an avid collector of all things Yoda from Star Wars. In addition to her parents, Imelda was preceded in death by her son, Jimmy Lee. She is survived by her son, Joseph Owen Rawlings Jr. (Cassie Campbell) and her grandchildren, Joseph, Nicholas, and Bentley Rawlings, Madelyn, Dominic, Kiersten, and Jayda Lee, Summer Campbell, and Jonathan Ivison. Dr. Stephen David Brown passed away peacefully on August 30th, 2025, at the age of 68 after a long battle with Multiple Myeloma. He was born on January 24th, 1957 in Altoona, Pennsylvania to Abraham and Lula (Nassif) Brown.

Stephen Brown graduated from Annapolis High School in 1975, then attended University of Virginia from 1975-1985 where he completed undergraduate and medical school. He went on to complete his residency at George Washington University in orthopedic surgery. He began practicing sports medicine in Annapolis in 1989, founding Bay Area Orthopaedics as well as The Greater Anne Arundel Orthopaedic Society. In 2016, Doc Brown was voted The Best Orthopaedic Specialist by The Capital Gazette, among many other accolades.

On May 30th, 1998 he married Jennifer (Bussey) Brown and later welcomed four beautiful children: Helena, Catherine, Giselle, Stephen Jr., and their dog Maisy. They celebrated twenty seven years of marriage while their children reached many milestones along the way.

Whether you know him as Doc Brown, Bad Boy, Stevie, or just Steve, Stephen Brown was sure to make an impact on you, no matter the relationship. His remarkable life was filled with love of family, life, and knowledge. Stephen was identifiable by his ever present smile and short quips. Treasured most was his time spent with Jennifer and the children: singing in the car, watching Dancing with the Stars, the holiday season, and appreciating the little things. He found simple joys by working in the garden and listening to music. When diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma his retort was not why me, but “Why not me?”. On operating days, you could hear him singing throughout the hospital; everyone always enjoyed his presence. One patient said, "All I had to do was hear his voice and he made me feel better". He was a beacon of love, compassion, and unwavering kindness. Steve’s dedication to his profession and desire to help others was unmatched. Dr. Brown’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of his loved ones, but an undeniable legacy.

Dr. Stephen Brown was a faithful and devoted Orthodox Christian and was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Antiochian Orthodox Church in Potomac, Maryland. Additionally, he belonged to a handful of medical societies, but more importantly he belonged to the Sea Dogs: his Tuesday night Trivia Team. Steve’s love for learning made him a force to be reckoned with when it came to trivia.

He was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife Jennifer Brown and his four children, Helena, Catherine, Giselle, and Stephen Jr., as well as his siblings Samuel Brown, Deborah Brown, and George Brown.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 14 from 5 PM until his funeral service begins  at 7 PM at Saints Peter and Paul Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church, 10620 River Road, Potomac, MD. A second visitation will be held on Monday, September 15 from 11 AM to 12 PM at Lakemont Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 900 W Central Ave, Davidsonville, MD with interment following.

Ann Cecilia Kilgour DeBolt, our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother was called to her heavenly home to be with Jesus on August 30, 2025 at age 92.

She had great energy, strength, kindness, and was a friend to all who met her. Ann was the heart of our family, a devoted wife to her late husband, Donald L. DeBolt, Sr., and a loving mother to Susan, Beth, Debbie, Frank, Donnie, and their spouses. She loved entertaining her grandchildren- Chip, Matthew, Nathan, Natalie, Caroline, Ryan, Joshua, Colin, Aaron, Molly, Shannon, Danielle, and Samantha — whether playing cards, going to the pool or to the beach. She now has seventeen great grandchildren. What a joy she was to us all! She will also be greatly missed by her dear sister-in-law, Alice, nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Hilda Kilgour and her siblings, June Marie Grobaker and Jourdan Kilgour.

She grew up on the family farm in Howard County, made lifelong friends at Franklin High School in Reisterstown, then earned her teaching degree at Towson State Teachers College. She had fond memories of being a camp counselor in Maine during the summers. Ann had a special love of children and was a well-respected teacher. She taught elementary school, often 4th grade, from Baltimore to Prince Georges counties.

Her church, Mount Oak Methodist, pastored by George and Carol Anderson, meant so much to her. She was always ready to come with a cake and help prepare food for the Best Years group. She was in multiple bridge clubs, went swimming or walking for exercise and could often be found reading. We are so thankful for the JOY and LOVE our mom shared with us. We are now challenged to carry on her loving legacy as we share Gods love with our own families, friends and strangers we meet.

Brian Clayton Spencer of Annapolis, Maryland, passed peacefully into heaven at his home surrounded by family on August 26, 2025.

Brian was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on May 24, 1940 to Lester and Esther Spencer.
Brian loved the outdoors and camping since he was a child. He was a Boy Scout and a Boy Scout Counselor for several summers in his late teens/early 20s.

He received a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin in 1962.

Brian moved to California, where he met his loving wife, Joan, who he married in 1964.
Brian began his career in 1962 working for defense contractors including Douglas Aircraft, IBM, Lockheed, and Lutton Systems as a computer analyst and programmer. He analyzed problems with missile trajectory, telemetry, flight, vibration and stress.

In 1977, he began his career as a Computer Systems Analyst with the federal government. He worked for the FBI (Computer Equipment Analyst), Department of Justice (Assistant Director of Computer Technology and Telecommunications), and the General Accounting Office (Technical Assistant Director of Government-wide and Defense Information Systems). Highlights include working on establishing a data center for DOJ in support of the 1984 summer Olympics, and assessing the impact of the “year 2000” switch on the entire federal government’s computer systems for GAO. He was revered for his technical expertise and was chosen to lead the technically complex GAO audits. He retired in 2000.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was an active Christian in the Lutheran church. He loved boating, fishing, crabbing, vegetable gardening and grocery shopping for the “best deal.” He loved to walk. He would walk to the Marc train station from home to work and to grocery stores.

Brian will be deeply missed and is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joan Spencer; his daughters, Laura Loomis (Ramon Matheu) and Nancy McNiff; his grandchildren, Andrew Loomis, David Loomis and Sarah Loomis; and his sister, Karen Kiefer.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 27 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1370 Defense Highway, Gambrills, MD 21054.

Mary Alice Berkley (Jackson), a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, passed away peacefully at home on August 26, 2025, at the remarkable age of 102, surrounded by the love of her family.


Mary was born on August 13, 1923, in Washington, D.C., to Edward Jackson and Alice Jackson (King). She grew up in a close-knit family, sharing her early years with her siblings, and carrying with her a strong sense of family and community that would guide her throughout her life.


She was preceded in death by her loving parents, her cherished husband Frederick Berkley, her daughter Pamela Emery, her son Timothy Berkley, as well as one sister and four brothers.


Mary graduated from Suitland High School in 1940. Shortly after, she began working as a telephone operator for the Bell Telephone Company, where she was affectionately known as "Jackie." Since there were two employees named Mary, her coworkers started calling her Jackie—a nickname derived from her last name, Jackson—to tell them apart. In 1946, Mary's life took a joyful turn when she met Frederick Berkley, a Marine stationed in Washington, D.C. Their connection was immediate, and soon they married, building a life together filled with love, laughter, and family. Together they raised two children, nurturing a household grounded in care, respect, and warmth.


Mary devoted much of her life to service and community. She was a dedicated member of VFW Post 9619 in Morningside, Maryland, actively participating in both the Women’s Auxiliary and the Military Order of the Cootie Auxillary (MOC). Her compassion and dedication extended to volunteering countless hours at veterans’ homes throughout Maryland, ensuring that those who served our country felt honored and supported. She also held a treasured place in her church family at Oxon Hill United Methodist Church.


Family was at the heart of Mary's life. She adored spending time with her grandchildren—Chrissy Peters (Carl) of Virginia, David Roylance (Sara) of Thailand, and Lindsey Berkley of Virginia—sharing stories, laughter, and life lessons. Her love extended to her great-grandchildren, Christopher, Tammy (Lawrence), Niki, Bilhan, Khalaya, and Makai, and her

great-great-grandchildren, Kamiah, Aubrie, Kilo, Alistair, Laelani, Jace, and Nikoa, each of whom brought her immense joy. She was also a cherished aunt to nephews Mitchell (Susan) and Michael King, and niece Sharon Jackson. Mary experienced a massive amount of love from others, because she gave out a massive amount of love to others. She truly loved everyone, all beings.


Mary’s hobbies were simple yet meaningful. She found pleasure in crocheting, putting puzzles together, and working on word finds, but her greatest joy came from the moments spent with her family. Her gentle spirit, kindness, and unwavering dedication to those she loved made a lasting impression on all who knew her.


Mary Alice Berkley lived a life rich with love, service, and grace. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, resilience, and devotion—a shining example of a life well-lived.


Mary’s family will receive visitors for her viewing on Friday, October 3, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Kalas Funeral Home in Oxon Hill, Maryland. A service will follow at 11:00 AM. She will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband at 1:00 PM at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham, Maryland.

Henry (Hank) Hugh Hairston transitioned from this life on 24 August 2025, at Alexander T. Augusta Military Medical Center (Ft. Belvoir Hospital), Ft. Belvoir, Virginia.

Hank was born to Swinton and Elsie Hairston in Crawford, Mississippi on 30 June 1936. He was the fifth child of eight. The family moved to East St. Louis, IL, specifically Fireworks Station in 1942. 

Hank professed a strong belief in Jesus Christ at an early age. He attended St. John’s Baptist Church in East St. Louis with his parents and siblings. During high school, he developed a deep love for music, and an abiding interest in the saxophone and clarinet.

After high school, Hank joined the U.S. Air Force. He began his career in administration and as a musician with the 585th Air Force Band at Carswell Air Force Base, Ft. Worth, Texas. In addition to the Air Force Band, when he and his wife were assigned to a new duty station in St. Louis, MO. he played with a number of local bands. Most notably, Hank played in bands that were warm-ups for nationally known stars such as Jackie Wilson, Nancy Wilson, and others. 

While in the Air Force, Hank’s intelligence, inquisitive spirit, and natural ability for learning foreign languages led him to become a highly effective Air Force Office of Special Investigations (OSI) agent. As an OSI agent, Hank learned Turkish fluently and he, his wife Carol, and three children lived in Turkey in the 1970’s at two different Air Force installations for almost four years. After serving 20 successful years, Hank retired in 1974. 

Hank met the love of his life, Carol, in Fort Worth, Texas. Their life was a true love story. Dad was always his happiest with Carol; they traveled together, partied together, and enjoyed 56 beautiful years together, until such time the Lord called Carol home March 2, 2012. Hank and Carol had three children, Nicole, Keith, and Mark. Hank was an outstanding provider and husband. He was extremely dedicated to his children. He loved and cherished his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. 

After his Air Force retirement, Hank became a dedicated federal law enforcement special agent and supervisory agent. Also, he was a 33rd degree Mason and Shriner. Hank dedicated 20 years to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), retiring November, 1994 as USDA Regional Inspector General, Northeast Region, Hyattsville, MD office.  

Hank was a life-long Mason and Shriner, who had a deep love for his fraternal brothers. He held a special love for his brothers at Roscoe C. Cartwright Lodge 129. He served most notably in the roles of Past Master, Past Potentate, and Lodge Treasurer. He was dedicated to supporting fraternal efforts and activities, including fund raisers and service to others. 

Hank was preceded in death by his father and mother, wife, and six siblings. He leaves to cherish in his memory his daughter, Dr. Nicole (Bradley), Fredericksburg, VA; his son Keith, Colorado Springs, CO; his son Mark (Angie), Ft. Washington, MD; his brother Attral (Helen), Florissant, MO. Grandchildren: Amber Taylor, Gabrielle Shepard, Brandie Jones, Mark Henry Hairston, Jr., and Angel Heaven Hairston; a host of great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and close friends.

Mary Johanna Awad Fratta, a resident of Annapolis and previously of Dunkirk, MD, passed away on August 23, 2025. She was born on May 16, 1935, in Shenandoah, PA, to the late Fred and Helen Awad. Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Peter J. Fratta. She is survived by her children, Deborah Koehle (Chris) of Leland, NC, Mark Fratta of Harwood, MD, and Michele Shaw of Prince Frederick, MD; her grandchildren, Michael Villano (Ashley) of Annapolis, MD, Molly MacTaggart (Bobby) of Rockaway, NJ, Dylan Koehle (Lindsey) of Chapin, SC, Megan Sutphin (Travis) of Prince Frederick, MD, Christopher Fratta of Harwood, MD, and Johua Fratta of Harwood, MD; as well as nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be offered on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at 11 am at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 101 Owensville Road, West River, MD 20778; interment will follow in the church cemetery. 

Our beloved mother, JoAnne Dewey, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on August 22, 2025. She was born on July 16, 1951, in Washington, D.C., to Joseph and Carmela Arcuri. She grew up in Maryland, where she graduated from LaReine High School. JoAnne had a great career as a writer for the U. S. Census Bureau. She enjoyed spending time with her family and loved her dog, Jax. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Davidsonville.

JoAnne was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Dewey, and her father, Joseph Arcuri. She is survived by her daughter, Carmela Windsor of Annapolis, MD; her son, Joseph (Taylor) Dewey of Severn, MD; her mother, Carmela Arcuri of Riva, MD; her sisters, RoseMary (Albert) DeCesaris of Riva, MD, Mary (Thomas deceased) Vendemia of Annapolis, MD, Elizabeth Arcuri of North Haldon, NJ, and Carmela (Donald) Willingham of Annapolis, MD.
