Richard Wallace Williams, Jr.
“Dick”
Richard Wallace “Dick” Williams, Jr., 77, a resident of Heritage Harbour in Annapolis and previously of Dunkirk, MD, passed away on September 15, 2017 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Born on November 18, 1939 in Richmond, Virginia to the late Margaret L. and Richard W. Williams, Sr., Dick graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He was a parishioner of St. James Parish for over 25 years, and a member of the Masons. Dick’s interests included cribbage and woodworking.
In addition to his parents Dick was preceded in death by his step-father, Ernest D. Lounsberry.  He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Ruth Ann K. Williams; his daughters, Debbie Williams of Raleigh, NC and Julie W. Bazzell of Stevensville, MD and four grandchildren, Katie Emmitt, and Olivia, Ryan and Ellie Bazell.
A memorial service will be held for Dick on Wednesday, September 20 at 11 a.m. at St. James Parish, 5757 Solomons Island Rd., Lothian, MD 20711. A luncheon will follow in the church hall. Interment will be private. John Bernard Bisson, Sr., 89, of Annapolis, MD passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Thursday, September 14, 2017.  He was the devoted husband of Grace Mary (nee Schweer); loving father of John (Trish), Diane (William) and Jeannette (Neil); cherished grandfather of Kathleen, Michael, Bridget, Colleen, Manuel, Mia, and Fiona; caring brother of Isobel, Gerald (Charlotte), Lorraine, Leonard (Patricia), and Diane (Brian). John will be fondly remembered by 21 nieces and nephews, and many friends. John was preceded in death by his parents, Rene and Gertrude (nee Langton); his brother, Ronald and his brothers-in-law, Leslie and Paul.  A private Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, September 18 at 10:30 am at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Annapolis, MD. Mrs. Thelma V. Ivey was born in November of 1924, in Washington DC to the late Viola and Edward Hodge. She departed this earth and went home to be with the Lord on September 14, 2017. Her husband, Arthur Ivey and her son, Bobby Adams, and daughter, Sandy Tolson; all preceded her in death. 

Thelma, “Sis”, as she was affectionately called, attended St. Cyprians Catholic School and later received her Nursing Degree at Prince George’s Community College. Thelma worked at Forest Haven, Department of Human Resources and enjoyed work as a Resident Director of a local Women’s Group Home for several years until she retired.
 
As a member of St. Ignatius Church, she volunteered in many areas, such as the Ladies of Charity, Catholic Charities, local food pantries and Senior Citizens Homes. Thelma was a generous, compassionate and gentle person, so much so that she took on an affinity to care for animals all throughout her life. She touched many lives, and will be truly and deeply missed and her memory treasured.
 
She leaves to cherish with fondest memories, her devoted brother, Gregory Hodge Sr., and her sister, Joyce Fisher, both of Maryland; her sons, David Johnson of Atlanta, Georgia, Clark Kemp, of Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Vincent Greenfield of Portland, Oregon and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends.  


Anthony Lee Williams "Tony", 55, a resident of Edgewater, MD for 7 years and previously of Florida, died on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at his home. Born on September 9, 1962 in Annapolis, MD to Glenda Jo and William A. Williams, Jr., Tony was an automobile body painter. He enjoyed dirt bikes, music, fishing, animals and sports, especially baseball. In addition to his parents, he is also survived by his brothers, Frank and Kevin Williams. JeanElizabeth Tydings
“Jeanie”
Jean Elizabeth Tydings, a 15-year resident of Riva and previously of Davidsonville and Hyattsville, passed away on Monday, September 11, 2017. Jeanie was 69.
Jeanie was born on December 1, 1947 in Cheverly, MD to the late Edward and Gwendolyn Clark McManus. She was a 1965 graduate of Northwestern High School.
Jeanie worked as a secretary and administrative assistant for the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) until she retired in 1999. Her interests included spending time with her family, reading, and she was an avid Washington Capitals fan.
She is survived byher daughter Jennifer Mobley of Edgewater; former husband and friend Brian Mills of Edgewater, step-sons; Andy Tydings of Mechanicsville, Kevin Tydings of South Carolina and Frank Tydings of Davidsonville, her siblings; Jacqueline Fraber of Crofton and the late Jerry McManus, and her niece; Christina Fraber. Also survived by 10 grandchildren; Jackson, Andie Marie, Elijah, Joshua, Michael, Cameron, Rachel, Frankie, Allie and Katie.

Kenneth L.  Orr, Jr., 79, of Edgewater, MD, died peacefully at his home of natural causes on Monday, September 11, 2017. Ken proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps and enjoyed a 28 year career with Giant Food. He took great pride in building two homes with his family. Ken was a member of American Legion Post 226 in Mayo and enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, hunting and watching football. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carol Orr and his sister, Peggy Orr Svolos.  He is survived by his children, Glenn Orr of Annapolis, MD, Christine Orr of Baltimore, MD and Toni McGrath of Lancaster, PA;  his brother, Charles Orr of Crisfield, MD and his three grandchildren, Patrick Hartge, Mallory and Olivia Orr. Anthony L. Girillo (Tony), 92, passed away peacefully in his home of natural causes on September 10, 2017.   Born in West Harrison, NY outside of White Plains, on July 21, 1925, Tony and his identical twin brother Greg were the last remaining siblings of Antonio and Maria Girillo who immigrated to West Harrison from Italy in 1905.  Since 1965, Tony resided in Oxon Hill, Maryland with his wife of 68 years Alice “Esther” (Coombs).  Tony married Alice in 1949 and they have three daughters, Susan, Pamela and Brenda, three son-in-laws, six grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.  

As an Italian American, Tony appreciated the opportunities of American life.  On November 11, 1943, Tony and his twin brother were inducted into the Army Air Corps.  Their first tour of duty was during WWII where they served in Italy repairing B-25 aircraft radio communications.  Honorably discharged from the Army Air Corps in 1945, Tony went to work for Chrysler Corporation in New York as a mechanic. 

In 1947, he joined the NY Air National Guard and trained as a Radar Technician.  He was commissioned by the Air Force to active duty during the Korean War.  During his military career he served in WWII, the Korean War, the Cold War and the Vietnam War.  His most memorable tour was on the Texas Tower 4 General Surveillance Radar station, located 63 miles south-southwest off the coast of Long Island, New York in 185 feet of water. 

Tony earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business from the University of Maryland.  After retiring as a Major from a lifelong career with the Air Force in 1970 , Tony began working with  St. Charles Cable TV in Maryland, as Vice President, and then with the Veterans Administration, in Washington, DC where he retired from in 1991.  

An honorable man who served his country and loved his family, he leaves behind a legacy of kindness, love, and memories cherished by his wife Alice, daughters Susan Novotny (John), Pamela Au (Jim), Brenda Evans (Matthew); his six grandchildren Matthew, Nathan, Anthony, Joseph, Kylie, Maggie; and six great grandchildren Cameron, Jahsiah, Easton, Payton, Oliver, Micah.  

Visitation will be on September 16 from 1 pm to 4 pm at George Kalas Funeral Home in Oxon Hill, Maryland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wounded Warriors Project. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Courtenay  Murphy Slater died of natural causes on Sunday, September 10, 2017 at her home in Annapolis, MD. Born on July 23, 1933 in Durham, NC, Courtenay grew up in Silver Spring, MD graduating from Montgomery Blair High School and Oberlin College before earning a PhD in economics from American University. 

She worked as a federal government economist for the Joint Economic Committee of Congress and for the President’s Council of Economic Advisors. During the administration of President Carter, Dr. Slater was the Chief Economist of the U.S. Department of Commerce, supervising the Bureaus of Economic Statistics and of the Census. She oversaw the design and execution of the 1980 Census. 

Dr. Slater is survived by her husband of 63 years, Whitney Slater; her three sons, Charles S., W. Ruffin and Harold B. Slater; her brother, C. Westbrook Murphy; her sister, Elizabeth G. Murphy and three grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are private. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to DC Central Kitchen or American University.

        Douglas Clark Dillard, "Doug", a resident of Bowie, MD for 42 years died on Saturday, September 9, 2017 in Annapolis, MD due to pancreatic cancer. Born on September 14, 1925 in Atlanta, GA, Doug enlisted into the US Army in 1942 at age 16. 

  	Doug left for basic training July 3rd, 1942 and recalled “When we learned about the Paratroopers, we all wanted to become Paratroopers.” He got his wish and was assigned to the newly formed 551st Parachute Infantry Battalion after training.  Later in the year the unit was sent to the Panama Canal Zone to prepare for the airborne assault on the pro-German island of Martinique which was cancelled.  From there he prepared for the assault into southern France “Operation Dragoon” on 15 August 1944.  There he made his first combat jump as a Communications Sergeant one month before his 18th birthday.  During the operation Doug and some fellow paratroopers captured the German Major-General in control of the district and the Corps Commander and his staff causing confusion in the German defense.  Doug took the pistol from the Corps Commander and kept it after the war.  The 551st continued to fight its way along the coast of France to the Italian border and held its ground along the Maritime Alps until relieved in early winter of 1944.  On 16 December the unit was moved to the Ardennes where they joined elements of the 82nd Airborne.  It was during the Bulge that he and his unit conducted one of the rare bayonet attacks of WWII for which the unit was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation.  Doug and the 551st were involved in continuous combat until the unit was deactivated after suffering tremendous casualties during the Battle of the Bulge.  He was reassigned to the 82nd Airborne Division to Company C, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment. 
 
   	 After WWII, he held several positions as a 1st Sergeant and Command Sergeant Major in airborne units. Doug had advanced from Private to Sergeant Major between the years 1942 and 1946. He received a direct commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 82nd Airborne Division in 1946.  With the onset of the Korean War, then Captain Dillard served as Commander, Special Air Missions Team and Tactical Liaison Office.  He trained and led US and Republic of Korea forces in unconventional warfare behind the North Korean and Communist Chinese Forces’ lines.  For his heroism in these operations, he was decorated by the Republic of Korea.  

	Upon his return from Korea, he continued to serve in military intelligence in Europe, coordinating collection between Military intelligence groups and the CIA during the Cold War.  In 1967, he was sent to Vietnam to MACV in the Mekong Delta and to head the Phoenix Program.  The Phoenix Program was created to disrupt the Vietcong political infrastructure in South Vietnam. When he completed his second year command tour he moved to his next assignment, with the 500th Military Intelligence Group, where he feels he did some of his finest work.

        Colonel Dillard commanded the 500th Military Intelligence Group and managed all U.S. military intelligence activities in Southeast Asia.   The government of South Vietnam recognized his bravery with four awards of the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with palm, the highest level of this award.  

        Doug received numerous decorations and foreign awards for his outstanding abilities in various classified intelligence programs in Europe, the Far East and Vietnam as well as combat bravery.  Some of those decorations include Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Army Commendation, and Joint Service Achievement Medal, Combat Infantry Badge with 3 stars, Master Parachutist Badge, French Croix de Guerre w/ss, Order of Saint Maurice, and the ROK Medal of Merit.

         Douglas retired at the grade of Colonel in 1977 after 35 years of service and three wars holding every rank in the US Army up to Colonel.  Doug is one of the founding fathers of Special Forces and an original leader of the Army Counterterrorism Unit: Detachment-Delta, commonly known as “Delta Force”. In 1990 he was inducted into the Military Intelligence Hall of Fame and in 2014 the Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame. Doug received a BS from University of Maryland in Military Science in 1962, a Masters Degree in International Relations from University of Boston in 1965 and attended Catholic University working toward his Doctorate.

         Upon retirement Colonel Dillard began a new career in the private sector and authored several books on Special and Airborne Operations during the Korean War.    Colonel Dillard was active in the Colonel Reuben H. Tucker Chapter, 82nd Airborne Division Association, President of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge Association and numerous other veteran organizations.    

	Doug continued to enjoy his trips to France, Belgium and Korea sharing his life experiences with new friends and family. 

         Doug was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Virginia H. Dillard. He is survived by his daughters, Cynthia D. Alley of Bowie, MD, Lynne Dillard of Lakeland, FL, Cheryl Staurulakis of Annapolis, MD and Michelle D. Howle of Melbourne, FL; his grandchildren, John, Douglas and Nicholas Staurulakis, Ryan and Rachel Resnick, Melissa Dowling, Amy Harrison and Brandi Matz and 7 great-grandchildren.

               Friends are invited to celebrate Douglas' life on Sunday from 12 to 2 and 4 to 6 pm at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD where his funeral service will be held on Monday, September 18 at 11 am. Frank Michael Bryn, a longtime resident of Bethesda, MD, and San Jose, CA, died on Friday, September 8, 2017, at Anne Arundel Medical Center after complications due to a head injury.

Born January 25, 1935, in Johnstown, PA, to the late Michael Bryn and Theofila Bilok, he served his country for 18 years as an aviator and flight instructor in the United States Marine Corps.  He received his bachelor of science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park.  Frank was employed by I.B.M. in Gaithersburg, MD, for 30 years, followed by  a fulfilling career at Lockheed-Martin in San Jose, CA from 1999 until his retirement in 2012.  Frank enjoyed hiking and traveling, ascending Mt. Fuji, Japan at age 80, and hiking Murren, Switzerland with family in June, 2017.  He greatly enjoyed spending time with family and friends, including potluck dinners with the Singulaires Sierra hiking club in San Jose.

He is survived by his children, Dr. Eileen Bryn MacDonald (Dr. James) of Annapolis, MD; Barbara Bryn Farley (Dr. Timothy) of St. Louis, MO; and Robert Bryn (Mindy) of Cincinnati, OH; his former wife, Grace Bryn; his brother Steven Bryn; and 11 grandchildren:  James, Lauren Charlotte and Henry MacDonald; Ryan, Peter, Owen and Catherine Farley; and Anna, Jack and Clara Bryn.

Eileen Kenny Shanley, 76, died on Friday, September 8, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. 
Eileen was a loving and devoted wife, a wonderful and caring Mother, a doting and attentive Grandmother, a fabulous friend, Catholic role-model, and a happy, beautiful and strong woman. Eileen was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York where she was a member of Good Shepherd Parish. She graduated from Notre Dame College on Staten Island and a week later she married then Lieutenant John Joseph Shanley, Jr. (“Jack”), also from Brooklyn, on June 16, 1962. Jack was the love of her life and she cherished their 55 years of marriage together. The young Brooklyn bride exemplified the saying, “Navy wife - the toughest job in the Navy” by creating welcoming homes in the various “homeports” of Jack’s military career: Virginia, New York, Puerto Rico, Mississippi, and California. In 1981, Eileen and Jack settled in Annapolis, where she continued to raise her seven children. She was an active member of St. Mary’s Parish in Annapolis. Over the years, she volunteered for many church outreach programs including teaching Confirmation, praying at the Perpetual Adoration chapel, and supporting Maryland Right to Life at Birthright in Annapolis. 
For 15 years, she taught at Saint Mary’s Elementary School until her retirement in June, 2006. Eileen loved to teach sixth grade Language Arts and was recognized in 2004 as the first recipient of the School Sisters of Notre Dame “Charism Award” for Outstanding Service within the School Community of Saint Mary’s. She had a special way of treating middle school students that resulted in her ability to reach many of them on a very personal level, allowing them to excel in her classroom.  Eileen was known for her adept ability to teach religious values and doctrine to her sixth grade language arts students on a daily basis.
Eileen valued education and instilled in her seven children that same trait. Her five sons each followed their father and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, and her two daughters graduated from Georgetown University. Ten graduate degrees, between the seven children, is a testament directly attributed to her role as an educator and a fabulous role model. Eileen was always hospitable and loved to entertain. She welcomed in her home countless friends and military associates, and had a special place in her heart for the many USNA midshipmen classmates; many now considered family.  “Mrs. Shanley” was known for her New York accent, her warm and welcoming personality, her devotion to the Blessed Mary and her immense love of her family and friends. 
Eileen developed many dear and devoted friendships over her 76 years and she was very grateful for them. She particularly treasured her daily routine consisting of attendance at morning Catholic Mass, followed by breakfast at Chick and Ruth’s Deli with her close friends. She will always be remembered for her quick “New York wit” and her ability to always be candid about life and faith. Eileen was a very learned and faithful practicing Roman Catholic who had a gift for teaching the faith to her own children, and to her many students at St. Mary’s Elementary. 
Eileen was born on December 5, 1940 as the fourth child of Eileen C. Kenny and John J. Kenny of Brooklyn, NY. Eileen was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Thomas C. Kenny and his wife, Martha. Eileen is survived in death by her brother John (Jay) Kenny and wife Judy, and her sister Maryann K. Kasprzak and husband Frank. Eileen is also survived by her husband Navy Captain John J. Shanley, Jr. CEC, USN (retired), their seven children, and thirty-six grandchildren. Her children are John J. Shanley III (Jay) and wife, Elaine; Kevin G. Shanley; Gerard K. Shanley and wife, Kris; Thomas P. Shanley and wife, Kate; Megan S. Philbeck; Eileen S. Berzins and husband, Tim; and LCDR Timothy F. Shanley, USN and wife, Emily. She is also survived by 36 grandchildren who she loved dearly and who each adored her and called her “Gaga”, they are: Kelly, Bridget and Megan Shanley (children of Jay and Elaine); Brendan, Jack, Andrew and Allison Shanley (children of Gerard and Kris); Michael and Annie Shanley (children of Tom and Kate); Thomas, Jack, Joseph, Eileen and Michael Philbeck (children of Megan); Moira, Tim, Jr. (Timber), Gerard, William, Sean, Gabriel, Kevin, Mary Eileen (M.E), Marie, Molly, Theresa, Megan, Francis, Brendan and Virginia Berzins (children of Eileen and Tim); and Tim, Jr., Louisa, John, Joseph (Pfeifer), Richard, Gerard and Catherine Shanley (children of Tim and Emily). 
A wake will be held at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD, 21037, on Friday, September 15, 2017 from 3-5pm and 7-9pm. A funeral mass will be held at Saint John Neumann Mission Church, located at 620 North Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD, 21401, on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 9am followed by a Christian burial at Saint Mary’s Cemetery located on West Street in Annapolis, MD.

Carroll Dewey Edwards, age 89 of Tracys Landing, MD.passed away peacefully September 5, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 13, 1928, in the beautiful mountains of Stratford, NC to the late Charles Thurmond Edwards and Clyde Maggie McMillian.

He was preceded in death by his wife Bernice Jarvis Edwards; four brothers, Odell Edwards, C.T. Edwards, Claude Edwards and Bobby Joe Edwards; two sisters, Ruby Kilby and Jessie Hill.

Carroll is survived by his daughter, Linda Edwards Bilo, and son-in-law, Edward P. Bilo and two grandchildren, Edward Carroll Bilo and Eva Marie Bilo. He is also survived by a host of other family and friends and devoted niece, Patsy Andrews.

Carroll graduated from Sparta High School in 1945 where he was class president and where he also met his wife of 49 years, Bernice Jarvis. After graduation, Carroll traveled to Toughkenamon, PA to work for two years with his Uncle Bert Edwards and son Tommy in the mushroom houses. Afterwards, he came home for the WWII draft and on the day he came home President  Dwight David Eisenhower announced that the war was over.

Carroll's next move to haul textiles for Central Motor Lines from Greensboro, NC to Chicago IL twice a week and to haul magazines back to NC. Shortly after, the company joined the union and fired everyone so on he went to work for Brame Wholesale Co.in North Wilkesboro, NC as a driver delivering butcher wrap paper.

From 1948-1950 Carroll went into the Korean War where he was stationed at Fort Jackson in Columbia SC as a cook and graduated as a mess sergeant. After his service he married his high school sweetheart  Bernice Jarvis in 1950 and soon after he was employed by Anheuser-Busch as a sales representative/manager in their Marion, Virginia location and Bernice found employment at the Department of Agriculture in North Wilkesboro, NC.

In 1955, Carroll and Bernice were convinced by Frank and Hazel Joines (Bernice's sister and brother-in-law) to come to Washington D.C.to work and live with them. Since Bernice was already working for the government, she transferred to the Government Printing Office in downtown DC and worked as a graphic artist/editor while Carroll went to work with Uncle Frank at Washington
Refrigeration Company. Not long after, Frank was able to get Carroll into the Local Union 602 Steamfitter apprenticeship school. After graduation, Carroll went to work for Washington Refrigeration Company as heating, ventilation AC mechanic. When Washington Refrigeration Company split Carroll went to work for Washington Refrigeration Service Company as their service manager. He later co-founded Interstate Service Company in July 1972 and was president until his retirement. He was a life member in Local 602.

Carrolls retirement years were spent enjoying his grandchildren and teaching them how to "fix" things instead of buying "new." He also enjoyed hunting, gardening, fishing, cooking cornbread and riding the tractor and mower every chance he could.

He truly loved life and all the blessings that God bestowed upon him.

Randall Eugene Gross, "Randy," a 13-year resident of Crumpton, MD and previously of Annapolis, MD, died unexpectedly at University of Maryland Medical Center on Monday, September 4, 2017. He was 68.

Born July 30, 1949, in Bluefield, WV to the late Raymond and Dorothy Puckett Gross, he graduated from Severna Park High School.  Randy was an elite status truck driver; moving several members of Congress, senators, business officers and once moving one of the engines of Elvis’ private plane the Lisa Marie.  He also worked as a driver hauling items for various conventions. Randy was the first private company to donate their time and tractor-trailer to deliver supplies to Katrina victims following the hurricane.  He enjoyed puzzles, games, model cars, watching old movies and anything Elvis Presley.  Randy especially loved people, talking and sharing his life experiences and his family. Because of his job, he was physically away from his family, but they were forever on his mind. 

Randy's two daughters, Tonya and Miranda, were always held close to his heart.  He is also survived by his three siblings, Clarence Gross (Margie) of Worton, MD, Linda Hatfield of Worton, MD and Barbara Boblitz (Bob) of Vero Beach, FL; and his many friends scattered throughout the country.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday, September 10, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. at Lakemont Memorial Gardens, 900 W. Central Avenue, Davidsonville, MD.

Frances Anne Underwood Franzak (87) a resident of Marian Assisted Living, Brookeville, MD, peacefully passed away on September 1, 2017.  

Born August 6, 1930, in Newton Grove, N.C. to the late Ada Douglas Royal and Bernard M. Underwood, Sr. she grew up in College Park, Md.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, George Franzak, Sr., three brothers, Henry M. Underwood of St. Mary’s County, Bernard M. Underwood, Jr., Conway, S.C., William T. Underwood, Pacific Palisades, CA.  

She is survived by three daughters, Dianne F. Jimmink, Joyce F. Cox(Joe) and Mary Ellen Howell(Scott) and three sons, Scott G. Franzak (Donna), Joseph K. Franzak (Becky), and George (Chip) F. Franzak (Beth), fifteen grandchildren, and her brother, Carroll D. Underwood, Newton Grove, N.C.

A homemaker for much of her life, she returned to the work force in September 1970 as Coordinator of Religious Education for High School students at St. Joseph’s Church in Beltsville, Md.  In 1974, she began working at the University of Maryland, College Park.  She retired from Professional Writing Program, College of Arts & Humanities, University of Maryland, in May 1994.  In 1988, she the first recipient of the Award for Outstanding Service to the College of Arts and Humanities.  

In 1991 she graduated Cum Laude with a BS degree from the University of Maryland all while being a wife, mother, full time employee and volunteer.

During her lifetime, she was an active volunteer in many organizations.  She was as an officer of several PTA’s, delivered Meals on Wheels, recorded books on tape for University of Maryland visually impaired students, assisted students in the Writing Center at University of Maryland, staffed the Angel Tree for Salvation Army.  Volunteer assistant in the Library of St. Pius Catholic School in Bowie, served on the Board of Caring Network in Heritage Harbour, helped edit Heritage Harbour News and was active in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Crofton, serving for many as Eucharist Minister to the sick and homebound of the parish.

In addition to her volunteer activities, she enjoyed taking classes through Anne Arundel Community College, reading, traveling, sewing and spending time with her children and grandchildren.  

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Anne's life on Thursday, September 7, 2017 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD 21037. A Memorial Mass will be offered on Friday, September 8, 2017 at 10 am at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Crofton.

Karen Hickson peacefully passed away at the age of 63 on September 1, 2017 after a lengthy battle with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL), chronic pain and breast cancer in Churchton, MD. 

Karen was born during 1953 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to John and Joyce Virginia (Propsner) Coffey. 

After graduating New Hope-Solebury High School in New Hope, PA, Karen attended Kutztown University, Kutztown, PA, and later attended the University of Maryland, University College, in Adelphi, MD. 

She married Michael W. Rook in Denver, CO, in 1977, which ended in divorce in 1991.

Karen married Patrick L. Hickson on August 21st, 1993, in Lakewood, CO. Karen was a Communications Vice President with an Employee Benefits Consulting firm prior to her retirement in 2009 for medical necessity. Karen’s hobbies and talents included writing, sketching, reading, poetry, gardening and photography. Karen won accolades and awards for her photography featured in local shows, along with submissions to local and National newspapers. 

Karen is survived by her husband; Patrick Hickson of Churchton, MD; her children, Jessica (Rook) Wolf of Exton, PA, and Adam Rook, and his wife, Akari Rook of Churchton, MD; her step-sons Derrick Hickson and Nathaniel Hickson of Spokane, WA; a half-brother, Barry C. Coffey of Denver, CO. 

To honor her wishes, a private service was held by immediate family.
