Timothy Lee Lowe, Jr., age 34, died peacefully on October 13, 2016, at his home in Bowie, MD. Born on December 20, 1981, Timmy was a graduate of Model Secondary School for the Deaf in Washington, DC and Northcentral Technical College in Wausau WI where he earned a degree in Residential Building Systems.   Timmy grew up traveling all over the United States, visiting 46 States, Canada, Mexico, and Germany. He loved his family, the deaf community and the puppies in his life. He was an avid disc golf enthusiast and a fanatic of all Washington sports teams. Timmy is survived by his father, Timothy L. Lowe, Sr. and his mother, Donna M. Lowe both of Bowie, MD. He is also survived by his brother, Justin R. Lowe, who is currently residing in the Northern Mariana Islands, Saipan;  his grandmother, Jan Roy of Henderson, NV and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Mary Naomi Clise, 91, a resident of Annapolis, MD for seven years and previously of Bowie, MD, died on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at her residence. Born on January 29, 1925 in Midland, MD to the late Harry H. and Theresa C. Sulser, Mary was a graduate of Bell High School in Midland. She worked as a medical assistant and later as an administrative assistant with Landesign, Inc. She was a parishioner of St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Annapolis and a former parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bowie. Mary enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles and she loved her grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Theresa L. Brawner of Bethesda, MD, John Jeffery Clise of Queenstown, MD and Raymond L. Clise, II of Charleston, SC; her grandchildren, Jeffery and Robert Brawner, Kyle and Jake Clise and Kendall Clise Higgins. Funeral services will be private. Sandra C. Stewart, 66, a lifelong resident of Maryland passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2016. Sandy was born in Washington, DC, the only child, of Edwin and Beverly Pearson on January 31, 1950. Sandy met John L Stewart during Junior High School and they were married after high school. She enjoyed ceramics, and traveling especially taking cruises to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands.  Sandy also enjoyed spending time at their home in Myrtle Beach, SC as well as spending time with her Grandkids.. Sandra worked as a Postmaster for the U.S. House of Representatives out of the Rayburn Building in Washington, DC. And 20+ years in the Insurance business Sandra was preceded in death by her father Edwin E. Pearson. She is survived by her husband, John Stewart; her mother, Beverly Ann (Gray) Pearson; her son, Lee Stewart of Annapolis, and two daughters, Tammy (Robert Olson) Stewart-Olson of Shrewsbury, MA and Stacey (Robert) Nilson of Annapolis; five grandchildren, Johnathan (Jaci) Stewart, Aaron Stewart, Courtney Nilson, Nicole Olson, and Dalton Olson. Edgar Bowen, Sr., of Annapolis, MD died on Wednesday, October 12, 2016, at his home.

Born December 20, 1923, in Eastport, MD, to the late Susan and Emory Gwynn Bowen, Sr. He graduated from Annapolis High School. In 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific Theater on the USS Livingston AK-222 as a Radioman 2nd class. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Edgar then helped run the family's grocery store, Bowen's Grocery, and was later employed as a tax assessor for Anne Arundel County. Upon his retirement he worked in the State Legislative Bill Room part time, for another 23 years. He was an active lifetime member of Eastport United Methodist Church and a member of the Annapolis Masonic Lodge #89. He was the beloved husband of 61 years of Agnes Mae (Miller) Bowen; devoted father of Edgar Bowen, Jr (Lorene) of Riva and George Bowen (Linda) Abington, VA; brother of Doris Belcher, Marjorie Engberg, Bennett Bowen, Carol Ann Cantler and the late Leona Russell, Emory Gwynn Bowen, Jr., Milton Bowen, Edith Frances Bowen, Owen O'Dell Bowen and Charles M. Bowen; grandfather of Jennifer (Eric) Selander, Timothy (Katie) Bowen, Sr., Erica Bowen and Heather (Danny) Blood; great-grandfather of Brandon Selander, Danielle Blood, Timothy Bowen, Jr. and Mary Bowen.

On Monday, October 10, 2016, Robert Ernest Christopher Smith went home to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was born on May 3, 1940 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Thomas Noble and Vera Mae Smith. His formal education began at the Tuskegee Institute and culminated at Howard University with an under graduate degree in psychology and a master’s degree in public administration. He retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs as Assistant Field Officer after serving 31 years in 1994. After retirement, he returned to government service at the Department of Mental Health serving as Chief of Operations, Division of Human Services until May of 2005.

Robert is survived by his devoted wife, Marlene, and his former wife, Shirley A. Smith; his children, Robert (Monica) Hill, Marlon (Syreeta) Smith, Lance Smith, Jeffrey (Karen) Woods and Tawana Woods-Brown; his sisters, Doll Varner and Barbara Jackson. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his sons, Gregory ( Lanaya) and Sean (Beth) Smith.

On October 9, 2016, Charles Regan Gray, Jr. died at his eldest daughter's home in Cheverly, MD. Chuck "Reg" Gray, the eldest of three sons of Charles Regan Gray and Barbara Allison Brown, was born in Washington, PA on March 31, 1942. Chuck grew up in Youngstown, OH and graduated in the first four-year class of Cardinal Mooney H.S. in 1960. He earned Bachelor and Master Degrees in Electrical Engineering at the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. Chuck retired in 1999 after 32 years of service at the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center in White Oak, MD and Dahlgren, VA where he specialized in underwater acoustic systems. 

There was nothing more important to Chuck than his faith and his family; although playing golf and following the Washington D.C. pro sports teams were a close #3 and #4. Chuck was an active parishioner, daily mass attendee, and volunteer at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Waldorf, MD where he served as a lector, sacristan, usher, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.  After moving to Cheverly, MD to live with his daughter, he continued his daily mass attendance at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Cheverly, MD until the time of his death.

Chuck was preceded in death by his infant daughter Mary in 1964, his second wife, Barbara Agnes Wilkinson (nee Strobel) in 2014 who was a native of Waldorf, MD, and his step-daughter Cynthia Marie Wilkinson in 1993. Chuck is survived by his 6 children, Kenny (Laurie), Peggy (Marco) Clark, Kathy (Cooper) Pappas, Mickey (Chris), Jennifer, and Brian (Diana); 12 grandchildren and two brothers, James Allison of Novato, CA and Robert Elmer of Youngstown, OH.

Diane Josephine Rongione, 81, of Edgewater, MD and previously of Feasterville, PA for more than fifty years, died on Saturday, October 8th. Born on November 11, 1934 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Paul and Margaret Reynolds, Diane was a graduate of Little Flower High School for Girls. She worked as a Telemarketing Manager with Union Fidelity Life Insurance Company/AON from 1973 to 1993. Diane was a member of Assumption B.V.M. Catholic Church in Feasterville, where she was an active volunteer and served as a Eucharistic Minister. She was an avid reader and lover of books, gardening, card games and most of all, her grandchildren. Diane is survived by her loving husband of sixty years, Charles Carmen Rongione; her children, Patricia Rongione Baker and her husband, Joseph of Tampa, FL, Chuck Rongione and his wife, Joan O'Brien of Blue Bell, PA, Joseph Rongione and his wife, Francene of Middletown, NJ and Theresa Rongione Hirschmann and her husband, Thomas of Edgewater, MD. Mary Ann Taylor, beloved and devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend passed away on October 8, 2016 at the age of 63. She is survived by her two sons, Bobby Joe and Brian James, Bobby’s wife, Trish, two grandchildren, John Christian and Alex Ryan, her companion, Jerry Whitters and many more family members and devoted friends. She is preceded in death by her late husband, Greg and children, Billy and Angel. Mary’s presence was a gift to those that were in her life and she will be greatly missed. On Friday October 7, 2016, Dr. Natalie Paine a 12-year resident of Annapolis and previously of Philmont, NY passed away after a long illness. Natalie was born on November 10, 1932 in New York to Nathan and Genevieve Elston. She was a graduate of Hunter College and received a Doctorate in Education from Columbia. Natalie served the public school system in New York City, as an educator for over 30 years. She was an accomplished Jazz and Blues singer performing under the name Natalie Lamb. Her specialty of 1920's Jazz and Blues could be heard with many different bands including the Red Onion Jazz Band and the Peruna Jazz Band. 

In addition to her parents, Natalie was predeceased by her former husband William M. Ludlam, and her current husband Bruce Paine. She is survived by her children, Genevieve Houston-Ludlam of Lothian, Marguerite Ludlam of Arnold, and William H. Ludlam of Mountain Lakes, NJ; and twelve grandchildren. On Friday, October 7, 2016; beloved mother of Eric Kelly; loving daughter of James Edward Kelly and Millicent Kay Jones; dear sister of Timothy N. Davis, Terry J. Kelly, William M. Elliott, Nichelle Kelly and Nicole Kelly; also survived by a host of relatives, friends, and co-workers. Kim was preceded in death by her beloved sister, Tracey J. It was his 97th birthday. He looked at well-wishers of family and friends gathered in the room. His wife Anni squeezed his hand. A phone call from grandsons Benjamin and Marcus in Chicago brought a smile. Moments later, Benjamin F. Dennis left this earth to begin his everlasting journey. He died in his Annapolis, Md. home after a short illness on October 6, 2016. 

His life filled with riches of family, friends and fun. Wherever he went, Ben Dennis brought good cheer. He loved jazz and blues. He devoted his time to community service and loved to hunt and fish. Most importantly, he shared his world with his wife and family. 

There was a time in his life never forgotten.

In 1940, Mr. Dennis entered the U.S. army. As WWII unfolded, 140 African American soldiers of the 3871 QM Truck Company played a key role in the European Theatre, landing on Omaha Beach only weeks after the Normandy invasion. The men were the last to serve under the Army’s segregation policy. African Americans made up over one million of the more than 16 million U.S. men and women to serve in World War II. Mr. Dennis was one of those men. He was first sergeant of QM Truck Company – one of the 125,000 African Americans to serve overseas. Service to his country did not end with his honorary discharge from the Army in 1945. He went on to work for the National Security Agency until retirement in 1973. 

 Born in Martinsburg, W.Va., Mr. Dennis was raised in Harrisburg, Pa. During later years, he lived in the Washington, DC area much of his life. He liked to tell stories of seeing jazz greats Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald at the Howard Theater. He married Mary Fordham in 1945. His wife, the mother of his son Michael and daughter Gail died, in 1977. Mr. Dennis remarried in 1983. 
He remains loved by his devoted wife of 33 years, Anna Schmied Dennis, his son Michael Fordham Dennis and partner Dan Marvin; daughter Anita M. Schmied with her husband Gary S. Medovich; grandsons Benjamin T. Robertson and his partner Nancy; Sekou Marcus Robertson and his wife Stacy, his three beloved great-grandchildren Selah, Joshua, and Sydney. Bernard Robertson, husband of daughter Gail Dennis Robertson who died December 2015. Mr. Dennis was the patriarch of the nuclear Dennis family. He is survived by a host of nephews, nieces and others including the families of Irvin and Lynn Heath; Solomaine and Ron Johnson; Cynthia Mimms, Mark and Jacquie Dennis; Roland Dennis Jr., Leonard and Helen Harris; Helena Dennis. Also, he greatly valued the friendship of Linda NeJame and Ethan Wilansky and their children Emma and Sarah.

Father Norman Francis Haddad of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), died on Thursday, October 6, 2016, at Sacred Heart Home in Hyattsville, MD, where he had been receiving palliative care for terminal cancer. Besides his Dominican community, he is survived by his sisters Lillian (Mrs. Edward) Shaker of Middlebury, CT and Janet (Mrs. John) Hurley of Alexandria, VA, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. 

Father Haddad was born on January 31, 1933, in Waterbury, CT, the son of Alfred and Adele (Corey) Haddad. He graduated from Providence College in 1954 with a major in Political Science, and entered the Dominican Province of St. Joseph immediately, making his first profession in 1955. 

He was ordained on June 9, 1961, at St. Dominic’s Church in Washington, DC, where he served first as parochial vicar from 1962-1972, and then as pastor from 1981-1993. In 2008, he returned to St. Dominic’s Priory to an active retirement, engaging in many ministries in the city and serving as sub-prior of the Dominican community.

He served in parish ministry at several other Dominican churches, in Columbia, SC, Charlottesville, VA, and Louisville, KY, and for seven years he was prior of a Dominican retreat house in Dover, MA. He served the Province of St. Joseph as Prior Provincial (major superior) from 1997 to 2002.

Fr. Haddad’s gentle and wise humanity won him much affection, both in parish ministry and as a religious superior. In old age, at St. Dominic’s in Washington, where he lived for so many years, he made himself useful to his brethren in a multitude of ways. His hobby of searching for valuable items in thrift shops, and then selling them at a profit to benefit his Dominican community, caused his brethren both amusement and admiration.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Dominic’s Church, 630 E Street SW, Washington, DC, at 10 AM on Wednesday, October 12. Wake in the Church on Tuesday, October 11, from 4 to 7 PM.


Thomas "TJ" Joseph Gerkin, an 11-year resident of Edgewater and former resident of Annapolis, MD died at Anne Arundel Medical on Thursday, October 6, 2016, following a 10 month battle with lung cancer.  He was 54.

Born on May 16, 1962, in Baltimore, MD to the late James B. Gerkin and Betty-Jean Westfall, he graduated from Old Mill Senior High School.  T.J. served in the U.S. Army and was employed at Verizon for the past 17 years.  He enjoyed Harley Davidsons, video games, reading, movies and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Karen Gerkin; a daughter, Sarah Gerkin of Edgewater, MD; a stepson, Adrian Gordon of Edgewater, MD; two siblings, James and Rhonda; a niece and a nephew, several aunts and uncles and two step-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD on Monday, October 10, 2016, at 6:00 p.m.  Interment private.

Dean (Ike) Armstrong, a 20-year resident of Annapolis and previously of Lanham, MD, died on October 5, 2016 at the age of 88 years old. Ike had gone back to his childhood home in Idaho and, while viewing the beauty of Yellowstone Park one last time, quickly passed on to join his beloved wife, Nobuko (Nobi). Born on August 23, 1928 to the late Julia and Price Armstrong in Pocatello, ID, Ike proudly served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer in 1966.  He became head of the parasitology lab at the Washington Hospital Center and completed his career there as the director of the laboratory.  Ike was an avid sports fan, reader and golfer.  When younger, he enjoyed playing basketball and softball, as well as bowling, for many years. Ike also enjoyed jazz and big band music.  He is survived by his son, Paul; daughter-in-law, Marga; and grandchildren, Emily and Eric.  A memorial service will be held at the  Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville at 10:45 am on December 2, 2016. 	Irene E. Musgrove, age 79, passed away on Friday, September 30, 2016 at Easton Hospital in Easton, MD from long-term pneumonia. 
She is predeceased by her husband, Oliver Musgrove, and her parents, James and Barbara Slater. She is survived by her siblings, Dorothy Kale and James Slater; her children, Donna Poole (Joseph), William Musgrove (Tabitha), and Kenneth Musgrove; grandchildren, Robert Figliozzi (Rachael), Jessica Poole, Alex Musgrove, David Poole, Samantha Musgrove, and Abigail Musgrove. 
Irene grew up in Wrigglesville, PA, and moved to Alexandria, VA when she was 18 years old. She lived most of her adult life in Edgewater, MD before moving to Arcadia Assisted Living in Chester, MD.  A dedicated and hard worker, Irene worked for Briggs-Wilson Foods, food service at Anne Arundel Medical Center, and as a school bus driver for Anne Arundel County Public Schools.  Irene enjoyed travelling, especially to Skyline Drive and the beach, and was a devoted mother and grandmother. She will be deeply missed.  
Friends are invited to celebrate Irene’s life on Monday, October 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Tuesday, October 4 from 12 noon until Irene’s funeral service begins at 1 p.m. at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD.  Interment at Lakemont Cemetery.

Charles Edward Phillips, 87, of Edgewater, MD died on September 30, 2016 at his home. Born on September 23, 1929 in Washington, DC, Charles served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After serving in the Army, he married his first wife, Ann, and they made their home in the DC suburbs. Charles worked as an industrial engineering technician with the Bureau of Engraving for many years. In 1988, after retiring, he married Margarett Pokorny who died in 2007. He and Margarett traveled extensively. Charles loved to work in his garden, it was the highlight of their community. He also loved photography, he was a member of the Annapolis Photography Club and a longtime member of Heritage Baptist Church in Annapolis. For many years, he took all the photographs for the church. Charles is survived by his two step-children, K. Christine O'Neill and her husband, David of the Eastern Shore and Bill Pokorny and his wife, Elizabeth of Florida. Funeral service will be held at 11am on Thursday, October 6 at Heritage Baptist Church, 1740 Forest Dr., Annapolis, MD. Interment Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.
