Bernard Wesley Tippett Sr., 79, a 50-year resident of Upper Marlboro, died September 19 at the Crofton Convalescent Center following a short illness. 

Born May 15, 1931, in Cheverly, Bernard was a self-employed carpenter. He enjoyed hunting, gardening and playing bluegrass music.
 
Bernard is survived by two sons, Bernard W. Tippett Jr. of Laurel and Steve Tippett of Riverdale; two daughters, Joyce A. Zeck of Durham, N.C. and Jeanne M. Bratvoids of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and three sisters, Mary Tippett of Edgewater, Helen Phillips of Forestville and Elizabeth Tucker of Upper Marlboro.

Virginia Gray Arnold, 91, a 5-year resident of Edgewater, MD and previously of Seabrook, MD, died on September 18, 2010 of heart failure after a 2 month illness.
 
Born June 1, 1919 in Colfax, NC, she graduated from Colfax High School. Virginia was employed as a service worker at Villa Rosa Nursing Home in Mitchellville, MD. She loved to travel, spend time with her family and take walks through the neighborhood.
 
She was the beloved mother of Bruce Agee of Clinton, MD, David Agee of Edgewater, MD, Jeff Arnold of Baltimore, MD, Chris Arnold of Fallbrook, CA and the late Forrest Agee; sister of Cammie Atkins of Colfax, NC and the late Jesse Gray, Ellen Bell and Chloe McGee; mother-in-law of Kristine, Sharon and Barbara Agee and Gaynor Arnold. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her former husbands, Macy M. Agee and Walter C. Arnold.

Elizabeth G. Havnen “Bettie”

Elizabeth G. Havnen, “Bettie”, 79, a 14 year resident of Heritage Harbour in Annapolis, died on Friday, September 17, 2010 of a heart attack at her residence.

Born April 9, 1931, in Washington, D.C. to the late Walter and Marguerite Walker, she was a 1949 graduate of Eastern High School in Washington, D.C. Bettie worked as a Sales Representative for Johnson & Johnson Medical, and as a Bookkeeper for the P.G. County Accounting Dept., where she retired after 20 years of service in 1991.

Bettie loved gardening, cooking, studying history, and animals.

Bettie is survived by one daughter, Kim H. Lauer of La Plata, MD and one sister Patricia McLaughlin of Beverly Hills, Florida. Also survived by her granddaughters Kathleen Lauer of La Plata, MD and Melanie Lauer of Annapolis, MD. She was predeceased by her husband Vaughn Havnen, who died in 2000, her brothers Joseph and Walter Walker and her sisters Eileen Weatman and Marguerite Bateman.

James P. Seen, “Jim” an 8 year resident of Annapolis, and a previous 35 year resident of Edgewater, died on September 15, 2010 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He was 71.
 
Born March 18, 1939 in Rochester, NY, he worked as a Construction Estimator for many years. He received a degree from the University of Hard Knocks which is affiliated with Alderson Broaddus College in Philippi, West Virginia. Jim was the co-founder and past President of the Utilities Contractors Association of Anne Arundel County.
 
Jim is survived by his wife Margaret M. Seen, of Annapolis, whom he married on November 26, 1959; his children, Kenneth (Bonnie) Seen of Spencer, WV, Stephen (Karen) Seen of Davidsonville, MD, Paul (Diana) Seen of Shady Side, Maryland and Sonya (James) Walker of Owings, Maryland. Also survived by his brothers, Robert Seen of Glen Rock, PA and Harry Seen of Richmond, Virginia, 12 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Gertrude Blanch Youngling, 98, a 7 year resident of North Beach, MD and previously of Holliston, MA for over 63 years, died on Tuesday September 7, 2010 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a brief illness.
 
Born November 16, 1911 in West Medway, MA to the late Augustus and Alvina Groehl, she graduated from Medway High School. In addition to being a homemaker, Gertrude was a founding member of St. Michaels Episcopal Church in Holliston, MA and a member of the Eastern Star.
 
She enjoyed spending time with her family, attending church, gardening, playing cards and summers in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
 
Gertrude is the beloved wife of the late Harold B. Youngling, whom she married in 1940. She is survived by one son, Harold G. Youngling and his wife Ruth, of Grasonville, MD, her grandchildren, Eric, Dawn, Heather and Holly.
 
A memorial service will be held on October 2, 2010 at 11:00am at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 1162 Highland St., Holliston, MA 01746. Inurnment in Lake Grove Cemetery.

Ibra Marie Talman Choate Bragg, 74, of Annapolis, MD, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at Anne Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis, MD. She had been in failing health for several years.

Born Tuesday July 2, 1936 in Asheville, NC. She was the daughter of the late John Junius Talman, Jr. and Bettie Montague Talman. She grew up in the Annapolis area and graduated from Annapolis Senior High School class of 1954. She worshiped in St. Anne's Parish, Annapolis, MD; Annapolis Assembly of God, Annapolis, MD; and Cornerstone Assembly of God in Bowie, MD. Her passions included birds, collecting pewter and a "good cup of tea". Her hobbies included gardening, canning, sewing, crafts and making holiday treats. She began her business career with First National Bank in Washington, DC that progressed into over 50 years of employment including Talman Office Supply, Annapolis Office Supply, both in downtown Annapolis, MD and finally retiring at Upper Marlboro Office Supply and Blue Print, Upper Marlboro, MD. Mrs. Bragg was predeceased by her second husband of twelve years, Arlie Wilton Bragg and brother, "J.J." Talman. Loving memories will be cherished by her four children of the Choate family: Henry Choate, Jr. and companion Kathy, Bowie, MD; Alan Choate and wife Teri, Linthicum Heights, MD; Mary Ann Choate Chastain, Waynesboro, PA; Pamela Choate, Everett, WA; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth Choate Miller, Amanda Marie Lewis, Nathaneal Chastain, Kelsey Ness, Lara Choate, Carrie Choate, Carren Choate, and Jennifer Choate; sister, Martha Brown and husband Jim, Davidsonville, MD; former daughter-in-law, Susan Bostic Choate, Georgetown, SC, and many friends including those at the Annapolitan Assisted Living Home, Annapolis, MD to whom she brought much "sunshine" especially to her beloved Sam Atcherson.

CLARA LEE BLANDING 

Of Annapolis, MD passed away on Sunday, September 5, 2010. 

The beloved wife of William A. Blanding for 32 years, loving daughter of Lee S. and the late Anita Baumann and devoted sister of Norma “Sunny” Kincaid. 

Born June 13, 1957 in Palo Alto, CA, she graduated from West Springfield High School in Springfield, VA in 1975 and Virginia Tech in 1978 with a degree in International Studies. During her college years she was involved in the Washington, D.C. Debutant Society where she met her future husband, William “Bill” Blanding. Bill seeing Clara for the first time in 1976, remembers saying, “that’s the girl I’m going to marry” and they were married June 24, 1978. 

Despite being burdened by medical problems during her marriage, that did not stop her from spending 6 years in Germany, 16 years in Orlando, FL, 7 years in Alexandria and the last 3 years in Annapolis working as a Medical Office Manager for over 20 years. Clara would learn anything that remotely interested her and developed many talents to include boating, beading, photography, publishing, ballroom dancing, cooking and scuba diving. She was always excited to share her experiences with any one, especially her culinary and artistic creations. Clara was active in the Northern Virginia Power Squadron (a boating organization) as the secretary for 3 years. She loved not only traveling, but also the excitement of planning and preparing for each trip and more importantly to her, researching the regional history associated with each trip. She was an avid reader, collector of baskets and pottery, helper to others and a friend to all.

Hazel Gene “Jean” Willard
 
Of Annapolis, MD passed away on Thursday, September 2, 2010.
 
Beloved wife of the late Charles H. Willard for 63 years, loving mother of seven children: Brian Willard, Jack Willard, Mark Willard, Melvin Willard, Denise Willard, Sarah Willard Draughon, and Jeannie Willard Davis. Devoted grandmother of 28 and great grandmother of 44.
 
She was born the only child to the late Eugene Lee Howard and Hazel Stella Dean on February 13, 1926 in Montgomery, AL. At the age of 5, she and her mother moved to live with her Aunt Jeannette and Uncle Melvin in Washington, D.C. She graduated from Calvin Coolidge High School in Washington D.C. in 1944 and then worked as a clerk at Walter Reed Commissary. During this time she met her future husband, Charles Henry “Jack” Willard, who worked for Metropolitan Poultry Company, one of the commissary’s suppliers. As Jean put it, Jack “swept her off her feet” and they were married April 13, 1946.
 
Jack and Jean’s growing family kept Jean very busy, but she still managed to find the time to “develop her talents” in cooking, flower arranging, tole painting, crocheting, dancing, singing and genealogy. Jean was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for 69 years. Jean served in the children’s auxiliary of the Church for 11 years and was a “Den Mother” for the Boy Scouts of America for many years. Jean sang with the Columbia Light Opera Company, the Singing Mothers (a women’s chorus of 300 members who sang at the Worlds Fair in 1964), Sweet Adalines, and The Mormon Choir of Washington D. C. She was an avid genealogist and spent years collecting information on her family and her husband’s family.
 
At the age of 50, Jean took up ballroom dancing and competed on both the bronze and silver levels for over 30 years. She was the recipient of over 100 gold medals and was a patron of ballroom dancing. In her golden years her main focus was associating with her family and preserving family memories. When asked what was her greatest wish for her family she replied, “To be happy.”

Catherine A. Gladmon, 89, a 6-month resident of Odenton and previously of Charles County and Riverdale, MD, died of leukemia at her home on September 1, 2010. Born August 8, 1921 in Fredericksburg, VA to the late George and Virginia Corbin, Catherine was one of 14 children. After finishing school, Catherine helped to support her family until she moved to Washington, DC where she met her husband, Harvey Gladmon. They were married on February 20, 1945. Catherine worked for the Woolworth Company in Georgetown, Hecht Company on F Street, A&P Grocery Store and finished her career at Briggs Meat Company in Landover, MD. She loved country music, travel and, most of all, spending time with her family. 

Catherine is predeceased by her husband, Harvey; two sons: Johnny Hammond and Larry Gladmon; and 11 brothers and sisters.
 
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Chester of Odenton; one brother, Charles Corbin of Abell, MD and one sister, Dorothy White of Cleveland, TN. Also survived by eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

David Dean Walden, 70, a 10-year resident of Lothian, MD and previously of Bernardsville, NJ died at his home on August 30, 2010 of lung cancer after a 1 year illness.
 
Born September 27, 1939 in Tuttle, OK, to the late Ora and Dennis Walden, he graduated from Oklahoma University with a BA and MA degree. David was employed as an auditor and comptroller of various organizations, including Price Waterhouse, Nabisco, RJR Nabisco and Interpublic Group. He was a member of the National Presbyterian Church, Stanford Yacht Club, Roxciticus Country Club, Old South Country Club, Financial Executives Institute and the American Institute of CPA’s. His hobbies included golf, quail hunting and wine.
 
David was the beloved husband of Susan L. Walden, whom he married in 1971; father of Lisa Walden of Bethesda, MD; brother of LaNell Lanning of Waco, TX and Anita Walden of San Rafael, CA.

Barbara W. Grabill, age 88, a 17 year resident of Annapolis, MD formerly of Union Bridge, MD and Kensington, MD, died on Sunday, August 29, 2010 at Anne Arundel Medical Center of natural causes. Born on January 18, 1922 in Washington, DC, Barbara was a homemaker and a medical receptionist/ secretary for many years. While living in Union Bridge, Barbara was a member of the Eastern Star.
