Sarah Jane Janowski, 86, passed away peacefully at her home in Crofton, MD on April 24, 2022 after a life well lived. 

Sarah was born to Vance and Myrtle Allen in 1936 and was raised on a farm in the Chattanooga, TN area. She was Salutatorian of her high school class and was a member of the basketball and softball teams. She went to work at a Bank in Chattanooga where she met Edward, who was stationed nearby. The couple married in 1958 and were soon off to McClellan AFB in Sacramento, CA and later settled in Central Maryland.

She worked in the banking industry, as an executive secretary for one of the first HMOs in Maryland, and for the State of Maryland as a Legislative Administrator until she retired in 2002. She enjoyed her work, the challenges each “Session” brought, and the relationships with the many fine people she worked with over many years.

Sarah will be remembered as a gracious host, a compassionate listener, and a progressive thinker who could hold her own in conversation or debate. In her spare time, Sarah enjoyed reading, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends. She was always up for a road trip. 

She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Edward, in 2003. She is survived by her children, Michael Janowski of Ventura, CA and Carol Melinda Janowski of Friendship, MD; grandchildren, Eric Hughes of Lothian, MD; Amanda Bowen of Friendship, MD; Lyle Janowski of Ventura, CA and Jason Janowski of Ventura, CA; and four great-grandchildren.

Sarah will be laid to rest next to her husband, Edward, at Chattanooga National Cemetery. Donations may be made in her name to the Wounded Warrior Project, Boystown, or a charity of ones choice.

Sophia Ivko, age 91 fell asleep in the Lord peacefully on Saturday April 23,2022 at the Compass Regional Hospice Center in Centreville, Maryland surrounded by family.
Born in Morgantown, West Virginia on October 28, 1930.  She was the daughter of the late Nicholas Kavrakis and Vasiliki Papadakis; both immigrants from Crete, Greece.  Though she was born in West Virginia, her family moved after the death of her father to New York when she was very young and where she attended public school, ultimately graduating from high school.

In 1949 she married her late husband Nicholas Ivko.  They were inseparable for 51 years when he succumbed to cancer in 1999.  During their marriage they were blessed with three children; James, Christine, and Terri. Sophia raised their family in Riverdale, Maryland and later retired in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.  During her years in Riverdale not only was she a dedicated mother and grandmother but she also enjoyed her career as a Correspondent Secretary at the US Senate for Senator Alan Cranston of California and Senator Jesse Helms of North Carolina.  However, her greatest and most successful accomplishment was raising her children and helping to raise her grandchildren.  She spent the majority of her life taking care of others, taking care of us.  She was an inspiration to many and touched the lives of everyone she met.
Sophia was vibrant, spunky, generous, caring, kind and let us not forget, strong willed.  She was the ultimate devoted wife, mother, grandparent, exceptional relative, neighbor, and friend.

She was preceded in death by her husband Nicholas Ivko, her son, James Ivko, her parents Nicholas & Vasiliki Kavrakis as well as her siblings, Mary Aspras, Amelia Zammetti and James Kavros.

She is survived by her daughters Christine O'meara, Terri Wright, son-in-law Chris Wright, and daughter-in-law Linda Ivko.  Also survived by grandchildren Christopher Wright, Camille Simonds, Erin O'meara, Michael Wright, Nicholas Wright, Alexander Wright and her 12 great grandchildren.  All of which loved her dearly and will keep her in their hearts forever.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 28 at 11 am at Ss. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 2747 Riva Rd., Annapolis, MD. Interment will follow at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Cemetery in Annapolis. Lawrence J. “Larry” Filippelli, 98, a 6-year resident of Ginger Cove in Annapolis and previously of Harwood and District Heights, MD, passed away on April 22, 2022.  Born on March 17, 1924 in Washington, DC to the late Frank and Annette Filippelli, Larry graduated from St. John’s College High School in 1942.  As a teenager, he excelled at basketball and baseball.  In 1943, he was playing baseball when he was approached and offered a major league contract.  Larry thanked the recruiter but declined because he had already signed a contract with another recruiter, the United States Navy.  He was inducted in July 1943 and served on the USS Guadalcanal as a radioman before his discharge in 1946.  Larry continued serving his country in a civilian capacity with the U.S. Department of Navy where he worked on the Polaris submarine-launched ballistic missile program.  He later transitioned to NASA responsible for preparing briefing materials for the NASA Administrator, James Webb, and members of Congress..  He retired in 1979.

Larry was an active member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Southeast Washington, DC, Mt. Calvary Catholic Church in District Heights, MD where he was a member of the Holy Name Society and Holy Family Catholic Church in Davidsonville, MD where he and his wife were collection counters.  He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.  Larry was an adult leader for his son’s Boy Scout troop and he enjoyed building model airplanes.  His passion for sports continued long after he stopped playing.  He was an avid fan of the Washington Senators until the team left the area then switched allegiance to the Baltimore Orioles.  

In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his loving wife of 73 years, Rosemary Filippelli, who died only four months ago in December 2021, and his sister, Evelyn Costa.  He is survived by four children, Larry Filippelli, Jr. and his wife, Michelle, of Fredericksburg, VA, Francis Filippelli and his wife, Lisa, of Edgewater, MD, Dee Orth and her husband, Vince, of Lyons, KS, and Maryann Penn and her husband, Taras Vizzi, of Stewartstown, PA; seven grandchildren, Michael, Bradley, Rich, Laura, Jen, Brandi, and Jessie; and 11 great-grandchildren.  

Friends are invited to celebrate Larry’s life with his family at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD 21037 on Sunday, May 1 from 3 to 6 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Holy Family Catholic Church Chapel, 826 W. Central Ave., Davidsonville, MD 21035 on Monday, May 2 at 11 a.m.  Entombment will follow at the Resurrection Cemetery Mausoleum in Clinton, MD.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at Holy Family Catholic Church.

Craig Alan Moffatt, Sr. “Butch”, 69, a 37-year resident of Edgewater, passed away on Friday, April 22, 2022, at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Butch was born on December 26, 1952, in Iowa to the late George, Jr. and Lorraine Moffat. He worked as a parts manager for Pep Boys in Annapolis. Butch was a member of the American Legion, and his interests included bowling, playing cards, painting cars, car racing, and spending time at cookouts with his family.

In addition to his parents, Butch was preceded in death by his son, Craig A. Moffatt, Jr. He was also preceded in death by brothers-in-law Bill Maus, David Hartlove, III, and sister in law, Linda J. Hartlove, and brothers-in-law Paul Booth, David Freeman, and Ricky Neal.

Butch is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Donna Moffatt, his daughter, Lyndsey Lawrence and her husband Nick, and his granddaughter, Maya Lawrence of Shady Side, MD, his sister Cindy Booth of Delaware, his sisters-in-law, Patricia Maus of South Carolina and Allison Neal, and niece, Nikki Sissler. Also survived by many other family members and friends.

A celebration of Butch’s life will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2022, from 1 pm until 4 pm at the American Legion Post 226, 830 Mayo Rd, Edgewater, MD 21037. Lorraine A. Smith of Annapolis, MD passed away peacefully on April 21, 2022. She was born on August 13, 1927 in Media, PA to the late George D. and Hazel I. Price (nee Melrath). An avid aviation enthusiast since childhood Lorraine earned her private pilot license in 1948. She continued to fly while working fulltime as an executive assistant for a defense contractor and taking on the role of wife and mother. An active member of Civil Air Patrol since her youth, most of her years were spent between the Annapolis Squadron at Lee Airport in Edgewater and Maryland Wing Headquarters in Linthicum near BWI airport. During her tenure with the Civil Air Patrol she attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Lorraine logged more than 7,000 hours in 18 types of airplanes. Reluctantly, she gave up flying in 1998 at the age of 71. She enjoyed spending time with her family especially with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her other interests included traveling and reading. In addition to her parents, Lorraine was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Harold C. Smith and her sisters, Janet Gunn and Kay Price; She is survived by her daughters, Leslie of Annapolis, MD, and Stephanie of Nashville, TN; her grandchildren, Frejus Lee (Mike) Yunker of Southport, NC and Jessica (Phil) Ateto of Annpolis, MD, Jason (Patty) Lastfogel or Riva, MD and James Fentress of Nashville, TN; her great grandsons, Aiden Yunker and Everett Fentress and one great granddaughter, Kaleigh Yunker. Patricia Gail “Pat” Routt, 78, a resident of Annapolis and previously of Greenbelt, died April 19, 2022.  Born in Washington, DC on August 11, 1943 to Martin and Florence Holly, she was a 1963 graduate of High Point High School and took classes at Gallaudet University.  A homemaker and mother, she was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Greenbelt and was a receiver of resources from the National Alliance for Mental Illness.  Pat was an avid reader and also enjoyed knitting, gardening, painting, cats and dogs.  She also loved hunting for treasures at thrift stores and yard sales.  As a lover of holidays, she delighted in making them extra special for those around her.   Pat is survived by her two daughters, Dawn Marie Delio of Richmond and Laura Parry of Annapolis.  She is also survived by her many cousins across the USA.  Along with her parents, Pat was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Elizabeth Harmon.  A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery on Wednesday, May 18 at 11:15 AM.  In lieu of flowers, memorials in Pat’s memory may be made to the National Alliance for Mental Illness (www.nami.org).  

Ma. Rhodora “Rhody” Collantes Comendador passed away on April 18, 2022, two months shy of her 84th birthday. She was born in Catmon, Cebu, The Philippines, one of the first of two sets of twin girls born to Jose Collantes and Felicidad Orlanes. After her widowed mother remarried to Jesus Cavada, Sr., Rhody grew up in a blended family of 12 siblings. Rhody attended Cebu Normal School and then St. Theresa’s College. She married Vicente Comendador and she bore three children. She managed a travel agency in Cebu City, which seeded a love of travel in both her daughters. Rhody and her two daughters immigrated to California in 1987 and she became a naturalized U.S. citizen nine years later. She worked for the State of California until she retired. Rhody enjoyed spending time with her large extended family, attending social and cultural events within the Filipino community, and maintaining a strong Catholic faith. After retirement, she traveled overseas on visits to the Philippines and on religious pilgrimages to Israel and Italy, and she lived in North Carolina and Virginia. 

Rhody is survived by her daughters, Carmel Comendador of Oxon Hill, MD and Vikki Cox (Mitch Axtell) of Concord, NH; grandsons Dorrein Cox of San Antonio, TX and D’Juan Cox (Kaitlynne) of Lacey, WA; and great-granchildren Nora, Leilani, and Lennox. Rhody will be missed as a beloved sister to Fe Collantes Musgrave, Virginia Cavada Weaver (Scott), Virgil Cavada (Onadine), Sincletica Cavada Abellana, Ursicina Cavada Espiloy, Julia Cavada Lupascu, and Corazon Cavada Manticajon. Rhody will be missed as a loving and caring aunt to Kristian, Ryan, Melanie, Joseph and many more Cavada nephews and nieces. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at 10:00 AM at St. Columba Catholic Church, 7800 Livingston Road, Oxon Hill, MD 20745. 

Rhody will be interred at Queen of the Valley Catholic Cemetery in Rowland Heights, CA at a later date. 



Virginia Fulgueras Gabriel was the beloved wife of Dionisio Aglibot Gabriel.
Born in San Marcelino. Zambales, Philippines, she was the youngest
daughter of Maria Calaje and Eulalio Fulgueras, sister to the late
Luisa F. Arlante,
Buenaventura F. Sarmiento, Elena F. Mendones, Antonio C. Fulgueras,
Catalina F. Navarro, Magdalena F. Ancheta and Pelagia C. Fulgueras.
She is survived by two siblings Efigenia F. Quimen and Salvador C.
Fulgueras, her daughter Virginia Gabriel Wallace, son-in-law David
James Wallace, a host of dear family members, friends and loyal,
personal caregiver Jacqueline Truman.

Education was always a top priority for her.  She even assisted nieces
and nephews with their educational pursuits.  After graduating from
high school, she worked as a math tutor while studying diligently at
the University of the Philippines.  In June of 1955, she received a
certificate for Apprentice in Pharmacy.  In April of 1959, she
received a Bachelor of Science degree and in December of that year was
granted a license to practice pharmacy in the Philippines.  On April
16th, 1960, she married her sweetheart Dionisio Aglibot Gabriel.  The
newlyweds were separated briefly due to his military service in the US
Navy, but they would correspond through numerous cards and letters
until they were reunited in 1961.  After having their only child in
1962, she wished to resume a pharmacy career in the United States.
She trained and worked in the field at Hadley Memorial Hospital and
Rexall Drug in Washington, DC while going to college and being a
mother.  She earned a second Bachelor of Science degree in August of
1966 from Howard University, in February 1967 was granted a pharmacy
license by the Board of Pharmacy in the District of Columbia, proudly
received her Certificate of Naturalization in March of 1972
and in June 1973 earned a license from the
Board of Pharmacy by the State of Maryland.

As a long standing, active member of the American Pharmaceutical
Association, she worked as a Registered Pharmacist at retail
pharmacies People’s Drug stores, CVS Pharmacy, Drug Emporium and
Shoppers Food Warehouse.  She trained and encouraged young pharmacists
over many decades.  She retired briefly due to health issues, but
completed continuing education pharmacy courses to maintain her
pharmacy licenses.  She returned to work full-time at CVS Pharmacy in
Oxon Hill, MD until requesting full retirement several years later.

Along with her husband, she assisted family and kabayan who emigrated
from the Philippines to the United States.  Her interests included
reading, playing the piano, organ and ukulele, singing, dancing,
traveling and collecting jewelry.

Our family wishes to acknowledge and extend most sincere thanks for
the comforting expressions of condolence.  Your kindness is greatly
appreciated and remains a source of strength during this time of
reflection and remembrance.

Services will be held at KALAS FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY in Oxon Hill, MD on May 1st, 2:00-6:00 PM, with a funeral mass to be held at St. Columba Catholic Church in Oxon Hill, MD on May 2nd at 10:00 AM. Internment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Matthew James Kratz, 54, a resident of Deale, MD and previously of District Heights, MD, died on April 16, 2022.

Known as "Matt-Matt" or "Matty K", he was born on May 13, 1967 in Washington, DC to Joseph Kratz, Sr., and the late Nancy Kratz.  Matt graduated from Crossland High School and worked as a hydraulic electrician for various large companies.  He was a prankster with an extravagant sense of humor.  Matt loved people and was a gentle giant.

In addition to his father and his step-mother Elizabeth, he is survived by three siblings, Joseph "Joey" Kratz, Jr. of West Palm Beach, FL, Lisa Thomas and her husband Tom of Richmond, VA, Michael "Mike" Kratz of Honolulu, HI, his girlfriend Lisa Howard, Deale, MD and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Matt's life will be held on Monday, May 23 at 2 PM at American Legion Stallings-Williams Post 206, 3330 Chesapeake Beach Rd., Chesapeake Beach, MD.

On April 16th, 2022 our loving and giving Ashley passed from this life. She graduated from hospice not once but twice during her long battle with a brain tumor. This strong and funny 20 year old persevered for 15 years through many treatments while still being an inspiration to so many.  
Ashley used every moment of her brief time on earth, attending Broadneck High School where she played bowling & bocce, Crosspointe Church with her loving church family, and even authoring a book “White’s Friends “with her amazing teacher and friend Julie Sauer.  
She loved to hold hands with her friends, classmates and her family and had hugs for all who needed one. 
Ashley (also known as Bug-a-Boo) leaves behind a world of love and joy, as well as her sisters Mikki and Artemis and her brother Raistlin.  She will be sorely missed by her many loving grandparents, mom Bethany, stepdad Joe and her dad Cody as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family. She profoundly impacted the lives of family and friends and the many dedicated caregivers in her life. 
Special thanks to her fabulous school nurses, home nurses and the Oncology Team at Children’s National Hospital.

Shirley Vandora “Van” Wilson was born in Roanoke, Virginia to Robert A. Hamlar and Maude Smith Hamlar on January 28th in 1933. Shirley was the youngest of nine and was predeceased by her siblings Eugene, Alwyn, Ethelyne, Clarence, Lawrence, David, Natalie, and Beverly. 

Shirley graduated from Roanoke's Lucy Addison High School in 1950. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Virginia State College in 1954. Shirley was a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and formed lifelong friends in their shared sisterhood.

Shirley married her High School sweetheart Thomas H. “Bug” Wilson, Jr. in 1955. They formed a career Air Force family, as Thomas served 20 years. They traveled to California, New Mexico, Japan, and finally to the DC Metro area at Andrews AFB.

Shirley and Thomas raised five children Alan “Ray,” Michael “Mike,” Sondra, Anthony “Tony,” and Thomas “Tom” the 3rd.  In 1962, the young Shirley traveled with four children to meet Thomas. The oldest was six and the youngest was an infant.  Tom was born in Japan while the family was stationed at Itazuke AFB.  

Shirley committed her life to service.  She worked as a social services caseworker when the family was stationed in the US and completed her career with the Calvert County, Maryland Department of Social Services where she retired after 20 years.

Shirley was a member of the University Park Church of Christ in Hyattsville, Maryland.  Shirley formed many close and loving friendships with the members. The church nurtured her faith in Jesus Christ as her savior.  Shirley’s faith was birthed in her loving home and she grew in faith at The First Baptist Church of Roanoke, the church home for generations of Hamlar family members.

Shirley was a lifelong learner and reader.  She shared her love of tennis with her brother Beverley and niece Brenda. They would often watch Grand Slam tournament matches in a three-way telephone call. One of her joys was a road trip to attend the US Open in Flushing, New York with Brenda.

Shirley was a loving, welcoming, and caring woman. Her children’s friends always felt at home and many would visit her on holidays and on her birthday to express their regards well into their adulthood. She would greet them and their children as family members. During her time with University Park Church of Christ, she would receive frequent hugs and greetings from the children of church members she had known since they were children.

Shirley is predeceased by Thomas (1933 – 2018) at rest in Arlington Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. She is survived by her children Ray (Elanza,) Mike, Sondra Rothermel (Ken,) Tony (Kim,) and Tom (Gloria.)  She leaves 11 grandchildren, Joseph, Amanda Pendray (Jeremy), Bryan, Danielle, Christian, Stephanie, Christina, Kimberly, Thomas IV, Tariq, and Kyla. Shirley has two great-grandchildren Milan and Miles. Shirley loved her nieces, nephews, and their children.  She leaves a host of cherished friends and their families.

Nancy L. Eustace, 91, died on Saturday, April 16 in Annapolis, MD after a lengthy illness. Born on June 24, 1930 in Washington, DC to the late J. Erle and Lois Scates Eustace, Nancy was a 1949 graduate of Roosevelt High School and earned a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in business administration from Lynchburg College in 1954. She began her career in 1959 as an executive secretary with North American Aviation which later became Rockwell International. She retired in 1997. Nancy was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Huguenot Society. She is survived by her cousins, Julia A. Goad and Dorothy B. Langmack and many other cousins and friends. Florencia Robles Agustin was born May 11th, 1932 to the late Avelino and Bartolomea Cruz Robles; the youngest of six children. She is survived by her sister Anastacia; her four other siblings—Auring, Ising, Catalina, and Cardo have passed. The well-respected Robles clan hails from Malolos, Bulacan, Philippines.

Florencia, fondly called “Puring,” was married to the late Pedro Agustin Sr. Together they had Rufina Agustin Austria, their only daughter, who selflessly cared for Puring throughout her prolonged health complications. Puring also nurtured six stepchildren: Sisenando, Juanito, Wenceslao, Pedro Jr., Felizardo, and the late Fabian. In the early 70’s and 80’s, the family migrated to U.S.

Puring was blessed with 18 adoring grandchildren: Jessica Marie, James Peter, Realynne, Reasol, Rea Mae, Khasmir, Melody, Wenceslao Jr., the late Marwence, Bella Catalina, Willie Angelo, Peter Vincent, Clarissa, Peter Edward, Peter Chaste, Paul Henry, Fr. Patrick, and Ninia Eliza. To date, she has 25 beautiful great grandchildren.

On April 15, 2022, this Good Friday, Florencia passed away after living a long and fulfilling life. She would have turned 90 this May. Puring’s selfless nature and generous soul will be treasured by us forever.

Mary Alice Carlock, a resident of Suitland, Maryland, for over 60 years, peacefully passed away on April 14, 2022, at the age of 89.  Mary, a member of St. Bernardine of Siena Catholic Church, spent her life devoted to her family and helping others.   She now rejoins her loving husband of 41 years, Lee Roy Carlock, who preceded her in death on August 5, 2001 , and one granddaughter, Kelly Christine Bernard, who passed on November 24, 1981.  Mary is survived by her four children, Kathleen McCormick of Menifee, California, James (Denise) Martin of Edmond, Oklahoma, David Carlock of Suitland, Maryland and Daniel Carlock of Sacramento, California, along with seven grandchildren, Kevin, Kris, Jonathan, Brandon, Chad, Derek and Taylor, and nine great-grandchildren with a great-granddaughter on the way.

The family invites friends to say their final goodbyes to Mary at Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 6160 Oxon Hill Road, Oxon Hill, Maryland 20745 on May 17, 2022 from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.  A service will follow at 12:00 p.m. 

James R. Stevens, 87, a 51-year resident of Edgewater, MD, passed away on April 14, 2022.  Born on July 22, 1934 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Eva and William G. Stevens II, Jim graduated from Penn State University in 1956 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business.  He enjoyed a lengthy and rewarding career with Victor O. Schinnerer & Co., rising from an underwriter to Chairman of the Board before retiring.  Jim was a farmer too; he raised and sold beef cattle on his farm, Little Flower Hill Farm, in Edgewater and was a member of the Anne Arundel Farm Bureau. He was also an avid sports fan and passionately followed the Penn State Nittany Lions, Maryland University Terrapin basketball team, the Philadelphia Phillies and the Washington Redskins football team.  When he needed a break, Jim loved visiting his home in the Grand Caymans.  Jim and his wife also enjoyed entertaining and hosted a widely popular Christmas party at their home every year.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife, Peggy, who passed away in 2018 and his brother William G. Stevens III.  He is survived by his children, Lynne Prenatt of Annapolis, MD and William “Bill” (Carol) Stevens of Edgewater; 11 grandchildren, Rebecca Mertz, Evelyn Sutton, James Prenatt, Dahlia Quinn, Georgiana, Samuel and Celine Prenatt, and Nichole, Lydia, Eva and William Stevens; and three great-grandchildren.

Friends are invited to celebrate Jim’s life with his family from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 29 at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater.  Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 30 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 W. Central Avenue, Davidsonville, MD. Lula Mae Cox Simmons

March 28, 1933 - April 11, 2022

Mrs. Lula M. Simmons was born the third of five children to the late Maximo Gomez “Bud” Cox and the late Amanda Lee Ingram (Ingraham) Cox in Evergreen, Alabama on March 28, 1933.  At an early age Lula joined Saint James A.M.E. Church of Miami, Florida.  She earned her high school diploma, and in 1954, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Florida A&M University (FAMU).  While attending FAMU, Lula met and married the love of her life COL (Ret.) Jerry Alfred Simmons II. 

Lula was at Jerry’s side throughout his illustrious military career, supporting him and rearing their family around the world.  She also headed several committees and military officer’s wives’ organizations devoted to charitable works and community revitalization which led to various commendations.  Lula was a dedicated substitute teacher for over 30 years as well as a loyal matriarch for her entire immediate and extended family.  She worked tirelessly to ensure opportunities were open to the generations that followed her.  Lula loved and uplifted every single member of her considerable extended family; all of whom benefitted from her encouragement, listening ear, support, beautiful smile and generous nature.  She spoke and laughed from her heart—a true woman of courage.

Lula Simmons was an advocate for higher education and a lifetime member of the FAMU Alumni Association.  Always a creative individual, Lula enjoyed crocheting, ceramics, macramé, crafting, baking, entertaining, sewing and several other artistic endeavors.  She was a homemaker extraordinaire known far and wide for her Sunday Morning waffles, banana nut bread, pound cake, German chocolate cake and spaghetti sauce made from scratch.

Mrs. Lula Mae Simmons was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, COL (Ret.) Jerry Simmons II, all of her siblings: Homer Cox (Genette), Charles Cox, Martha Cox and Norma Jean Cox Coes (Richard, deceased), and late sister-in-law Annie Mae Cox. 

She leaves to cherish her memory her three children: Marian D. Simmons Smith, Angela R. Simmons, and Jerry A. Simmons III; her favorite and only grandchild Tiffany N. Smith; her late husband’s siblings Oliver Simmons (Gloria), Ruth Collins (Harold, deceased) and Frederick Simmons (Sylvia, deceased); and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives, caregivers, friends and fellow Rattlers.

To know her was to love her.

A Celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday June 22, 2022 at 11:30 am at Kalas Funeral Home. Lula will be interred alongside her husband at Arlington National Cemetery following the service.

Warren Paul Bussler, 82, a longtime resident of Davidsonville, MD, died on April 9, 2022 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Born in Washington, DC on August 18, 1939 to the late Leonard S. and Nora Joy Bussler, Warren initially attended elementary school at St. Francis Xavier in Washington, DC and finished at Mt. Calvary Catholic School in Forestville, MD before attending and graduating from Suitland High School.  He retired as a master electrician after a long career at the U.S. Government Printing Office in Washington. Warren was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Davidsonville.  He enjoyed raising Hereford cattle and driving and showing his 1953 street rod – “Reminisce 53”.  

Warren is survived by his wife of 56 years, Julia; his daughter, Stacy K. and her husband, Patrick J. Callahan of Cumberland, MD; and their children, Brendan Callahan (Jen) of Lebanon, NH, Bridgid O’Neill (Bryan) of Arnold, MD,  Colin Callahan (Jess) of Linthicum Heights, MD, Madison Callahan of Cumberland, MD and Garrett Callahan of Tuxedo Park, NY.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 23 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 W. Central Avenue, Davidsonville, MD.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to <a href="https://www.stjude.org/donate/donate-to-st-jude.html?sc_icid=header-btn-donate-now">St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital</a>

Kevin Lee “Kebby” Beall, 37, a 3-year resident of Shady Side and previously of Edgewater, MD, passed away on April 9, 2022.

Kebby was born on November 16, 1984 at Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Frederick, MD to Vickey Petrillo and the late Robert Beall. He was a graduate of Port Charlotte High School in Port Charlotte, FL and worked in Pennsylvania as a truck driver for the oil industry.

Kebby’s interests included hunting, fishing, crabbing and spending time with his daughters.

He is survived by two daughters, Savannah Leanne and Isabella Grace Beall; his mother, Vickey Petrillo; his siblings, Bobby Beall and Stevie Bowser; his granny, Alberta L. Hitzel and his sister-in-law, Jennifer Lewis.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Kevin's life on Wednesday, April 20, from 1 until 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD 21037. Interment will be private.

James Valentine Loftus, 88, of Annapolis, MD, died peacefully on April 8, 2022. Born to the late Evelyn Walsh and Joseph Loftus in Chicago on February 14, 1934, Jim grew up on the city’s Near North Side and attended Saint Bede Academy in Peru, IL. He went on to win an NROTC scholarship to study electrical engineering at Marquette University. It was there that he met his wife, Patricia Racana, to whom he was married for 65 years.

Jim served as an officer in the U.S. Navy at Great Lakes Naval Base in Illinois before embarking on a successful career in the semiconductor industry. He spent much of his professional life at Motorola, where he rose through the ranks to become a vice president and distinguished himself as a manager and mentor. 

In his free time, Jim loved nothing more than to sail on the Chesapeake Bay on his beloved Orange Peel with family and friends. Jim was a faithful parishioner at St. Catherine Laboure in Glenview, IL, St. Mary’s in Annapolis, MD, and St. Patrick’s in Lake Forest, IL, where he gave freely of himself to raise and donate funds for those less fortunate. In his retirement, Jim enjoyed his grandchildren, golf, travel, and a good gin & tonic. 

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; sons, Timothy (Toni) of Elkhorn, WI, Michael (Desirea) of Sherman Oaks, CA, Peter (Chantal) of Burlington, ON; daughters, Margaret “Peggy” (David Jones) Loftus of Charleston, SC, and Evelyn “Evie” (Arnold) Turner of Severna Park, MD; and grandchildren, Callahan Loftus, Claire Turner, and Patrick Turner. He was predeceased by his brother, Joseph. 

The Loftus family wishes to extend their most heartfelt thanks to Hospice of the Chesapeake and the nurses at Anne Arundel Medical Center. 

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 4 at 10:30 am at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 N Bestgate Rd, Annapolis, MD. Inkeri (Ingrid) Anna Atkins passed away on April 7, 2022 in her own home overlooking the Chesapeake Bay in Edgewater, MD. She was 94 years old. Inkeri was born on March 31, 1928 near Joensuu, Finland. In 1959, Inkeri came to the US, where she met her future husband Arthur K. Atkins in Bethesda, MD. Inkeri and Archie were married in 1963. For many years, she devotedly took care of  Archie until he passed away in 2013. 

Inkeri and Archie enjoyed doing many things together during their 50 years of marriage. For decades, Inkeri and Archie hosted wonderful Christmas dinners for the extended family. For many years, they represented the R.D. Bean Roofing Company at Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) conventions. They traveled to major cities in the US, and around the world. Inkeri and Archie loved dogs and the Chesapeake Bay. They were avid supporters of St Jude's Children's Hospital. Inkeri traveled twice to Memphis, TN to visit the hospital.

Inkeri enjoyed sewing and cooking as hobbies, and she became an expert seamstress. To stay fit, Inkeri took many classes at the Senior Center. 

An early learner of computer skills, Inkeri used those skills and her mathematical talents to become a very valued office manager over an extensive career at Meloy-Revlon Labs, Pritchett Controls, Inc. and Ethan Allen. 

Surviving family members include: step-son, Arthur K. (Connie) Atkins; step-granddaughters, Nicole (Ryan Mchugh) Atkins, Courtney (James) Brustman; step-grandsons, Scott Atkins, Chris Atkins; niece, Kathleen B. Danford; nephews, Edward F. (Naovarat) Branagan, Jr., and Michael F. (Maria Elisa) Branagan; grandnieces, Monique Pasquale (Bob Gajewski), Michelle (Paul) Ramsey, and Natalie Branagan (Dan Mullaney); grandnephew, Edward F. (Ilona) Branagan, III; great-grandnieces, Flora Branagan and Karolina Branagan; and great-grandnephew, Alex Ramsey.

Visitation will be held from 11 AM to 12 noon on Thursday, April 14 at the Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd, Edgewater, MD 21037 (410-956-4488) with a funeral service to follow at noon. Burial will be at 2 PM at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20906.


Kevin Joseph Babbington died suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday, April 7, 2022.

Kevin was the firstborn son of William Joseph (“Billy”) and Elizabeth (“Betsy”) Ann (Howerton) Babbington and is survived by his wife Yvonne Pauline (Rieker), daughter Brittany Ann and son Kevin William; his brother Brendan (Margaret) and sisters Carrie (Michael) Hillegass and Cassie (Josh) Monk and thirteen nieces and nephews. Kevin was predeceased by his father and sister, Susanne Marie Babbington.

A devoted husband, father, brother and son, Kevin was the rock upon which many family and friends relied.

Born on May 7, 1967 in Washington, DC, Kevin attended Blessed Sacrament School and St. John’s College Preparatory Academy in Washington, DC. He was a member of the Junior ROTC program, played numerous positions on the St. Johns’ Varsity football team and the varsity baseball team as an outfielder. Ever an industrious boy, Kevin delivered the newspaper, caddied at Chevy Chase Club, and worked for various companies.

Kevin graduated from Drexel University where he studied electrical engineering and co-oped at the National Security Agency (NSA) as an undergrad. Kevin also earned a Masters of Science Telecommunications and Computers from the George Washington University. He had a very successful and accomplished 30 year career at NSA, after which he started his own cyber security company, where he supported Homeland Security and other federal agencies.

Kevin met his soulmate Yvonne at the NSA and they were married in Antigua on July 1, 1995.  The two became very proud parents of Brittany Ann and Kevin William. Kevin truly enjoyed watching Brittany and Kevin excel academically and athletically, while guiding and supporting Brittany’s field hockey, lacrosse, track, and competitive Irish dance and Kevin William’s football, baseball, basketball, and lacrosse. Kevin maintained an active presence and supported his children through college, adding his insights and experience to engineering, science and other coursework and life skills, often pointing out activities on campus that his children did not even know about.

In addition to being incredibly smart, Kevin was talented athletically.  He enjoyed playing golf, softball, football and skiing. Some of his happiest times were playing golf with his son Kevin William. He often played with friends at Queenstown and other local courses. He enjoyed playing at the TPC Louisiana, San Antonio, Sawgrass, Poppy Hills, Pebble Beach, Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, Koolau in Hawaii, and Streamsong in Tampa for his 50th birthday. Kevin and his brother Brendan won the Brother-Brother golf tournament at Columbia Country Club in 2010. He volunteered at the 2011 U.S. Open at Congressional and attended the 2016 PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club in NJ.

Kevin loved attending and watching all sports, starting with his childrens’ activities.  Kevin avidly watched ESPN and checked virtually every sports app on his phone to stay up-to-date on the latest scores. Among his favorite sporting events were the Super Bowl, the Master’s, and the Final Four. He actively supported his hometown teams -  the Redskins, Nationals, Capitals, and Wizards - as well as the Bowie Baysox and U.S. Naval Academy football, where he was a season ticket holder.  Kevin attended playoff games for each of Washington’s professional teams, and was proud to have come away with some of the turf after the Redskins won the NFC Championship Game in the 1980s and he made it into the Washington Bullets locker room after they won the NBA Championship in 1979. He wondered if autographs from these events still remain in the eaves of his boyhood home on Turner Lane in Chevy Chase.  

Beyond sports, Kevin loved music and good entertainment. Among his favorite performers were the Eagles, Pink Floyd, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC, Elton John, and Jimmy Buffet, whom he and Yvonne would see every year when he came through the area before COVID. Kevin always enjoyed a good laugh watching Caddyshack, Dodgeball, Airplane, Stripes, Adam Sandler’s early comedies, and the James Bond franchise, as well as Cheers and MASH reruns. His understated, lighthearted sense of humor was delivered to great effect, but never at the expense of another. He loved inside jokes that could get a laugh through a simple phrase.

Kevin and Yvonne enjoyed traveling and experiencing all that life has to offer. He loved the ocean and one of his favorite pastimes was to sit on the balcony at sunset after a full day on the beach. He loved cruises, the Caribbean and turquoise waters. Kevin and Yvonne traveled extensively and made a point to see and explore all that any location had to offer. He was the unofficial family tour guide and provided personal recommendations and reviews on local food and happenings. He always preferred finding the local spots away from the tourist hotspots. Kevin frequently traveled to Hawaii and Germany with work and enjoyed his experience celebrating Oktoberfest in Munich.

Kevin truly enjoyed being with family. He enjoyed taking long family walks with the dog,  sitting around the firepit with a nice cigar at the Bay House in Edgewater, and just being with his siblings and extended family. A yearly highlight for all was Thanksgiving dinner after the annual Turkey Bowl, when Kevin and Yvonne hosted more than 20 family members that filled two large rooms. The house was filled with football and food, and Kevin made sure he served everyone’s favorite drinks. Kevin had a memory that rivaled an elephant’s and many turned to him to fill in details and descriptions from times past that otherwise could not be remembered.

Kevin was a devout and active member of the Catholic Church. His unwavering faith helped him and others through difficult times. Kevin was active in St. Mary’s Parish in Annapolis, and he was a 3rd Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus, Annapolis Council. He delivered food to the poor every Thanksgiving and Christmas and made donations to local shelters through the Church.  A stable and steady presence, Kevin truly lived Christ’s example of service and support to others. His presence will truly be missed but never forgotten.
