Marie Theresa Nelson “Memaw”, age 83, a ten year resident of Edgewater and previously of Manassas, VA died on Sunday, September 29 at South River Health and Rehabilitation Center in Edgewater of natural causes. Born on February 28, 1930 in Washington, D.C. to the late James and Mary Mattimore, Marie graduated from St. Patrick’s Academy and worked as an executive secretary with I.B.M. from 1975 until 1991. In addition to pedicures, manicures and getting her hair done, Marie also enjoyed reading, watching Notre Dame Football, riding horses, spending time with her family and playing with her grandchilren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Leslie T. Hill, Sr. and Kenny Nelson. Marie is survived by a daughter, Denise T. (Robert) Sullivan of Edgewater; a son, Leslie T. (Patricia) Hill, Jr. of Gainesville, VA; two sisters, Florence Wesminiti of Rochester, NH and Patricia White of Springfield, MO and three grandchildren, Robbie T. Sullivan, Jr. of Edgewater, Justin Thomas Hill of Colorado Springs, CO and Vanessa Lynn Palau of Centreville, VA. Carolyn Denise Hendrie, of Annapolis and Laurel, Maryland, passed away on September 27 at Mandrin Inpatient Care Center after a brief illness.
 
Carolyn was born on April 27, 1961 to Donald and Betty Hendrie. She is survived by her mother, Betty Herzog Hendrie of Annapolis, Maryland; her sisters Donna Hendrie of Annapolis, and Susan Kerin (Eugene) of Ocean Pines; her brother Stephen Hendrie (Marlene) of Arnold; a niece and three nephews. She is predeceased by her father, Donald Gordon Hendrie.
 
A memorial service will be held at 2pm on October 2 at George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, Maryland. Interment will be private.

On Friday, September 27, 2013 of Catonsville, MD, died at the residence of her daughter in Fort Washington, MD surrounded by her family. She was born on December 27, 1916 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Michael and Mary Shell, nee Varvaryne, and was raised in South Philadelphia and moved to Yeadon with her husband. After 46 years they moved to Fort Washington, MD to be near her daughter and grandchildren. For the past 22 years she resided at Charlestown an Erickson community in Catonsville MD. While in Yeadon, Ann was very active in her church and community being past president of the Womans Club of Yeadon and the Monsignor Bonner Band Mother's. Ann was a very talented seamstress, sewing for her daughter, her friends and herself. She did great needle pointing and crocheting. She was an avid bridge player, gardener and cook. Everyone who knew her loved her for her great enthusiasm and energy. She loved helping everyone, especially her family. She loved her Catholic faith, formed several bridge clubs at Charlestown and exercised until she passed. Ann was predeceased by her loving husband Jimmy of 54 Years and three brothers, John, Mike and Teddy and three sisters, Marie, Jackie and Emily. She is survived by her devoted daughter Cathy McGarrigan and son James Callos; loving grandmother of Lauri (Miles) Johnson, DJ (Tara) McGarrigan, and Scott (Michcale) McGarrigan and Joey, Andy and Brad Callos and great-grandmother of Jackson (11), Ella Cate (9), Ethan (4), Dylan (3) and Danny (2) McGarrigan. Loving sister of Helen Oslar and sisters-in law- Antoinette Callos and Ann Shell brother-in- law Anthony Callos and many loving and adoring nieces and nephews. Rosalie Caruso passed away on September 26, 2013 at an assisted living facility in Pasadena, Maryland after a long illness. 

Rosalie, daughter of the late Katherine and James DiPasqua, was born on November 6, 1930 in Bronx, New York. She married the love of her life, Mario, in New York, over 63 years ago. 

Rosalie is a loving mother to Joni and husband Nick, Teresa and husband Joseph, and John and wife Jennifer. Rosalie is also survived by her dear brother Charles. 


Everyone who met her, if only for a moment, was touched by her kindness, compassion and warm smile. She will be forever loved and dearly missed by all who knew her.

Linda Winchell, 66, a 13 year resident of Chester, died in Ellicott City after an eight year battle with breast cancer. She was born on April 3, 1947 in Lubbock, TX to the late William and Nellie Logan. After retiring as an administrative assistant from Honeywell, she then worked for several years at ITT Exelis. In her spare time, Linda enjoyed spending time with her family. 

She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Donald R. Winchell. 

Surviving her are two daughters, Sheri (Tim) Stevens of Ellicott City and Sonja (Mark) Harding of Henderson; two sisters, Lorraine (Lee) Haislip of Harwood and Lisbeth (Phil) Gardner of Ft. Pierce, FL; a brother-in-law, Duane Winchell; eight grandchildren, Robert, Ashley, Jessica, Brooke, Lily, Shepard, Emma and Ryan; and three great-grandchildren, Kyleigh, Hailey and Sophie.

Lewis “Butch” Trainum, 69, a 40-year resident of Ponder Cove in Edgewater and previously of Riverdale, died September 21 at his home following a 4-year battle with cancer.
 
Born on June 16, 1944 in Riverdale to the late Aubry and Mary Trainum, Butch graduated from Northwestern High School in 1962. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Old Guard which provides memorial honors to current and former military members at Arlington National Cemetery. Butch was a member of Plumbers Local #5, retiring after a 50-year career.
 
Butch was a life member and four-time past commander of American Legion Cummings-Behlke Post 226 in Mayo. In the early 1980s, he coached the Mayo Mustangs football team. He was an avid Washington Nationals, Redskins and NASCAR fan. Butch especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and getting away to his cabin in Keyser, WV where he was a member of the local Moose lodge. 

He was preceded in death by his son, Timothy. He is survived by his fiancé and forever life partner, Diane Francisco of Edgewater; daughter, Terri Trainum-Tracey of San Antonio, TX; brother, Sonny Trainum of Riverdale; three sisters, Shirley Fox and Gerri Page of Hyattsville and Marie Dimuzio of Lanham; and three grandchildren, Brittany, Katlyn and Troy.
 
Friends are invited to Butch’s Life Celebration from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24 at the George P. Jerome Flowers departed this world on Saturday, September 21, 2013, in Ft. Washington, Maryland.
 
Jerome was a born and raised in Ozark, Alabama, where he also attended school and graduated from Carroll High School. He attended Tuskegee Institute for one year, thereafter joining the Army where he served for a little over seven years. After being honorable discharged from the Army, Jerome was employed by the United State Army Corps of Engineers as a Civilian where he remained until his death.
 
He leaves to cherish his memory; his wife: Tina Flowers, one daughter: Charmaine N. Flowers, one stepson: Aaron Ajani (Lezlye), his parents: Sylvester and Lou Ethel Flowers, two grandchildren: Tianna Flowers-Walker (as he affectionately called “Pumpkin”) and Niko Ajani, three brothers: Bernard (Vicki) Flowers of Ozark, Al, Terrell “Jack” (Tanya) Flowers of Montgomery, Al, Leon Flowers of Ozark, Al, and predeceased in death one sister: Debra Floyd.
 
He also leaves behind his Uncle Lloyd Flowers, aunts, cousins and many friends who loved him dearly.

Laymon June Myers, Jr., a resident of Arnold since 1964 passed away on September 21, 2013 surrounded by his family at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis. Laymon was born at home to the late Laymon June and Gertrude Gay Myers on March 11, 1936 in the town of Covington in southwestern Virginia. The second oldest of nine children, Laymon decided in 1956 to join the Navy and see the world. And see the world he did. After boot camp he was stationed aboard the USS Casa Grande LSD-13 assigned to the Fifth Fleet. His many tours of duty took him to the Mediterranean Sea, the Rock of Gibraltar, Italy, and Greece to name a few. His ship also traveled the Atlantic Ocean as far north as Greenland and as far south as Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. While stationed at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, he met his future wife on a blind date, Janice Marie White, a long distance telephone operator for the C & P Telephone Company from Edgewater. The two were married October 26, 1957 in Davidsonville. Laymon received an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1962 and took a job as the assistant manager at Southern Maryland Lumber as well as a part time job with Edgewater Liquors, both in Edgewater. In 1967 before the birth of their fourth child Laymon accepted a job with Arundel Gas & Water Conditioning in Edgewater; working in the water division for the next 46 years. In 1991 upon Laymon’s semi-retirement he and Janice spent their summer months over the next 17 years traveling; enjoying the sites of all of the 50 states including Canada. 
In addition to his parents, Laymon was predeceased by his brother William “Bill” Myers. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Janice M. Myers; his children, Jay (Cindy) of Arnold, Jan Fischer of Crofton, Rick (Carrie) of Ridgely and Barb (Donald) Hildebrand of Annapolis; six grandchildren, Eric Myers of Arnold, Marissa Fischer of Crofton, Jeffrey and Kevin Myers of Ridgely, Rachael and Brad Hildebrand of Annapolis; a great-grandson, Andrew Myers of Ridgely; five sisters, Shirley Persinger of Covington, VA, Charlotte Rinehart and Brenda Vickers both of Clinton, IN, Linda Tucker of Covington, VA and Debbie Barker of Syracuse, UT and two brothers, Gerald Myers of Bellevue, IA, and Steven Myers of Elgin, IL.

TORGERSON, Allan Curtis, died Friday, September 20, 2013 in Stevensville, Maryland. Torg or Torgie, as he was known, had recently celebrated his 90th birthday. Born in Albert Lea, Minnesota, he attended Pillsbury Military Academy in Owatonna, Minnesota, Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1946. He married the love of his life, Roberta “Bobbe” Josten in 1946. She predeceased him in 2011. Torg was the son of the late Andres J. Torgerson and Clara Sophia Hanson. He was also predeceased by his brother Dale Andres Torgerson and grandson Timothy Allan Coyer.
 

After Torgie’s retirement as a Colonel from the U.S. Army in 1976, he worked as the Director of Development for the Bullis School in Potomac, Maryland and then the Army Distaff Hall in Washington, D.C. While on active duty, he and Bobbe lived in Kyoto, Japan, Sandia Base, New Mexico, Ft. Hood, Texas, Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, Honolulu, Hawaii, and in Germany and Belgium. In addition, he served two unaccompanied tours in Korea and one tour of duty in Vietnam. After full retirement, Torg and Bobbe spent summer and fall on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and winter and spring in Wickenburg, Arizona. Torgie was active in the Episcopal Church his whole life and was a long-time member of both St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Wickenburg, AZ and Christ Church Parish in Stevensville, MD. He sang in both choirs for many years.
 

While living in Wickenburg, AZ he was active in helping promote and preserve acres of pristine desert by cofounding the Wickenburg Conservation Foundation. He loved music and played the violin beautifully. He cofounded the Wickenburg Chamber Orchestra which led to the creation of the Wickenburg Children’s Cultural Organization (The WCO). He and Bobbe donated dozens of violins to children’s programs both in Wickenburg and Annapolis (The Chesapeake Youth Symphony Orchestra). He played the guitar and harmonica and possessed a beautiful tenor voice and could harmonize effortlessly.
 

Torg was a member of the Minnesota Masonic Lodge #33, the Owatona, MN American Legion Post 77 and the Shriner’s. He was also a member of the Desert Caballeros and the Desert Mountain Caballeros.
 

Torg is survived by his children, Christopher Torgerson (Margo) of Huntsville, AL; Sally Lawson (Donald) of Prescott, AZ; Julie Coyer (Spencer Hopkins) of Annapolis, MD; Thomas Torgerson (Dona Carlozzi) of Stevensville, MD; and Andrea McCally (Thomas) of Washington, D.C. In addition, he is survived by five grandchildren, Parker and Andrew Coyer, Georgia and Garrett McCally, and Brian Lawson and two great-grandchildren, Trent Lawson and Samantha Coyer.

Debra Wallace Leahy, 64, a 20 year resident of Annapolis and formerly of Hillcrest Heights, MD, died on Wednesday, September 18 at home with family by her side. Born June 19, 1949 in Seattle, WA to the late William Wesley Wallace and Ellen Wallace (McKinney), she attended Anacostia High School in Washington, DC, graduated with a History Degree from the University of Denver, and attended the College of William and Mary for her graduate degree. Debbie worked for the National Archives and Records Administration for 35 years before retiring. Her archival experience included positions in the Legislative Records Branch, the Office of Federal Records Centers, and in the Office of the Archivist. She was a longtime member of the nation’s oldest academic honor society, the Phi Beta Kappa Society. Being an avid reader, she enjoyed two book clubs and found time for family genealogical research, crocheting, travel, walking, gardening and loving her family and their two dogs Susie and Gracie.
 She is survived by her husband of 37 years, James Michael Leahy; one son, Stephen Michael Conor Leahy of Annapolis; two brothers, David (Merry) Wallace of Sacramento, CA and Steven Wallace of Lafayette, CO; one sister, Ann Petersen of Tulare, CA; sister-in-law, Patricia (Jerry) Whitmer; brother-in-law, Daniel (Rose) Leahy and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Kirk Edward Mathers, a 5-year resident of Mayo and previously of North Beach died at his home on September 17, 2013 of lung cancer after a 1-year illness. He was 51.
 
Affectionately known as Eddie, he was born on February 22, 1962 at Leland Memorial Hospital in Riverdale to Constance Schrom and the late James Mathers, Sr.. Eddie graduated from Bladensburg High School and worked, doing construction, at Hopkins and Wayson in Owings, and also worked as a cabinet maker, carpenter and drapery installer. He enjoyed playing poker with friends, NASCAR racing and Dallas Cowboys football.
 
Eddie is survived by a son, Kirk Edward Mathers, II of Martinsburg, WV; his former wife, Stacy DeWard; three brothers, Jimmy Mathers of Bennington, VT, Ronnie Mathers of Petersburg, WV and Richard Schrom of Mayo; three grandchildren, Dawson Kirk of Waynesboro, PA, Ava Mathers of Hagestown and Addison Nichole of Martinsburg, WV; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and great-aunts.

After a courageous battle with lung cancer, Frank Dwight Denison passed away peacefully at the Hospice of Charles County on Monday, September 16, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. Frank was born in Washington, D. C. on July 18, 1945, to the late Dwight Kellogg and Evelyn Mae (Hardrup) Denison. He graduated from Oxon Hill High School in 1963. He married Sue O'Brien, also from the Class of '63, on May 8, 1965. After graduation Frank worked briefly for Western Electric. In 1966 he joined the D.C. Air National Guard working at Andrews AFB as an aircraft mechanic and crew chief. He retired from the Guard in 2000. He also worked 38 years for Denison Landscaping as Vice President of Residential Sales. Frank is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sue O'Brien Denison; daughter, Lisa Denison (Greg); son, Frank Denison; granddaughter, Devon Denison; sister, Patricia Gallahan and three brothers, Dwight (Diana), Duane (Gail) and John and sister-in-law, Judy Kogok (George). Ronald “Ron” L. Rice, 81, a 9-year resident of West River, MD and previously of Riverdale,MD, died September 16 at the Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Born November 30, 1931 in Lancaster, PA to the late Carl and Violet Rice, Ron graduated in 1949 from McCaskey High School in Lancaster. 

He served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force from 1949 to 1953 which included a tour of duty in Alaska. In his civilian career, Ron was a pressman for the U.S. Government Printing Office.

Ron was a member of the Elks and Knights of Columbus. He was also a coach for the CYO, American Legion and Bladensburg Boys and Girls Club. Ron enjoyed all sports, gardening and woodworking. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ron is survived by his wife of 61 years, Anna Lena Rice; two sons, Ronald Thomas (Maureen) Rice of West River, MD and Michael William (Catherine) Rice of Pasadena, MD; one sister, Eileen Bauer of Lancaster, PA; six grandchildren, Brian (Haley) Rice of Edgewater,MD, Stephen (Ella) Rice and Bridget (Greg) Snyder of Stevensville,MD, Shawn and Shannon Rice of West River,MD and Patrick Rice of Pasadena, MD; and five great-grandchildren, Alexis, Daniel, Brayden and Layla Rice and Riley Snyder.

Friends are invited to Ron’s Life Celebration from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 19, at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 20 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 101 Owensville Road, West River, MD. Interment in the church cemetery.

Herman C. "Hank" Tabler, 84, a 30-year resident of Davidsonville and previously of Oxon Hill, died September 15 at his home surrounded by family.

Born on August 5, 1929 in Buechel, KY, Hank served in the U.S. Army and then the U.S. Air Force during World War II and the Korean War. He completed 22 years of military service before retiring from the Air Force in 1966 as a Staff Sergeant. Hank worked for the U.S. Civil Service at Bolling Air Force Base until retiring again in 1976. He spent the next 22 years providing security at the Capital Centre and MCI Center.

Hank was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Davidsonville, American Legion Post 248 in Temple Hills, the South County Senior Center and the Masonic Lodge #231 in Oxon Hill. He was an avid pool player and enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Regine M. Tabler; son, Stanis Tabler of Charles Town, WV; daughter, Regine Olga Klimek of Carlisle, PA; sister, Thelma Holz of Indiana; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Friends are invited to Hank's Life Celebration from 2 until 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 22, at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater where Hank's funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, September 23. Interment will take place at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.

Anna Nancy Horan, “Nancy”, a 40-year resident of Bowie, died on September 15, 2013 at the Mandrin Center in Harwood, Maryland. She was 85.

Nancy was born in Liverpool, England on September 2, 1928 to the late Henry Ainscough and Gertrude Rossiter. She immigrated to the United States in 1955 where she became a citizen. She was a Navy wife and homemaker for 20 years and then worked as a receptionist for Sisk Mailing Service for over 10 years. She enjoyed gardening, taking care of her cats, visiting her family in England and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by a daughter, Lisa Marie Pike and her husband Jeffrey Riter Pike of Dunkirk; a sister, Winifred Lambert of Liverpool, England; two grandsons, Brian Michael and his fiance Stephanie Farmer, Joseph Alan Henshaw of Millersville; 3 step grand children, Madeleine Pike, Spencer Pike and Gabriel Pike of Vienna, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews of England.
