Theresa Ann Fatzinger Kazerman, 44, of Crownsville, MD, passed away on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 after a courageous, two year battle with triple negative breast cancer. Born on September 19, 1967, in Washington, D.C., Theresa was raised in various locations throughout Maryland: Silver Spring, Germantown, Towson, Hanover, and Frederick. As an adult she lived in Germantown and Annapolis, until she and her husband, Glen were married and settled in Crownsville. She was a 1985 graduate of Thomas Johnson High School in Frederick, and a 1989 graduate of Towson University in Towson, where she majored in business marketing. Her professional career in hotel hospitality spanned seventeen years. She became Vice President of Sales for several hotel management corporations, including Interstate Hotels and Resorts of Washington, DC. Her career required a fair amount of traveling throughout the United States. Theresa was the most loving mother to her daughter, Morgan, participating in all that should could to enjoy every activity with her pride and joy. Her role, as mother to Morgan, was her most satisfying vocation. Morgan and Theresa enjoyed every activity together like two best friends. Theresa enjoyed family times with Glen and Morgan on their boat, and traveling together in the family recreational vehicle, as well as taking international trips with Glen. 
Theresa was known for being a good and faithful friend, having maintained friendships lasting since high school days. She continued to be close with her college suite mates, as well as to many friends in the community. Theresa was known as a generous and forgiving person. She was a lifelong lover of animals. 
Theresa is survived by her husband of more than nine years, Glen Kazerman; daughter Morgan Kazerman; parents Meredith and Thomas Connar, PhD of Bridgeville, DE and Harold R. Fatzinger, Jr. of Havre de Grace, MD; brothers Thomas Fatzinger of Port Depoist, MD, and his daughter Amber and Matthew Connar and his wife, Kelly Connar of Cape Coral, Fl; her in laws, Stanley Kazerman and Paula Kazerman of Boyton Beach, Fl; brother in law Keith Kazerman and wife Dana Kazerman and their son Ryder Kazerman all of Jericho, NY; nieces Alexandra and Samantha and nephews, Cooper and Carson. Audrey Dill Umpleby, 90, died peacefully at her home in Annapolis, MD on Tuesday, February 28, 2012.

She was born in Baltimore and her friends affectionately referred to her as Dilly. She graduated from Western High School. Her first job in the Women's Travel Bureau at the B&O Railroad opened many opportunities for her including travel and selection as "Charm Girl of the B&O" representing active business girls seeking guidance on etiquette tips including what to say and do and how to dress. After her daughter was born in 1945, she worked as secretary at Campfield Elementary School during the time her daughter attended. Subsequent jobs included executive secretary to senior executives at Black and Decker and Litton Industries. She retired from Westinghouse Electric Company in 1978. Audrey enjoyed working in the garden and loved beautiful flowers. Other favorite past times included bridge, travel, reading and time with her precious poodles. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and loved the Lord.

Preceding her in death were her parents Norman Merritt Dill and Maude Strube Dill; her husband, Charles Frederick Umpleby; and her grandson, Bradford Charles Dunlap. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Ann Dunlap and her husband, Steven; her grandson Byron Thomas Dunlap and his wife, Natalia; and her loving and devoted friend, Linda Bezelik.

Michael Brian “Mike” McGrath, 41, a 16-year resident of Annapolis and Vice President and Associate Publisher of POLITICO, died February 27, 2012 at his home following a 17-month battle with lung cancer.
 
Mike was born on August 4, 1970 in Greensburg, PA to Thomas and Marlene McGrath, currently of Linthicum. He graduated from St. Vincent Pallotti High School in 1988 and Towson State University in 1993. Mike began a distinguished marketing career at the Washington Times in 1994. He left the newspaper in 2007 as Director of National, International and Major Advertising to join the newly-founded POLITICO in Arlington, VA. Mike was a highly-regarded and respected professional throughout the Washington area and the entire advertising community. He was frequently quoted as an authority on political and advocacy advertising in industry magazines and was a frequent speaker at various ad clubs. He also served in elected capacities with the Virginia Press Association and was an honored recipient of the Distinguished Sales and Marketing Award of Metropolitan Washington from Sales & Marketing Executives International. 

Mike was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He enjoyed golf and the beach. Most of all, he treasured his family and the time he spent with them.
 
In addition to his parents, Mike is survived by his wife of 16 years, Patricia “Tricia” McGrath; two daughters, Reagan and Corinne McGrath; one sister, Tina Marie (Lee) King of Owings; one brother-in-law, Chris (Monica) Buckley of Millersville; two nephews, Brayden and Carson Buckley; and two nieces Anna King and Madison Buckley.

Anthony J. Brodnick 

Retired Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Anthony J. Brodnick, 90, died Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, in Fayetteville, NC. Tony was born Aug. 7, 1921, in Harrisburg, Pa., to Anthony and Ruth Brodnick. Tony joined the U.S. Air Force at a young age; he married Marion Palmer and was married for 68 years. He was stationed with his family in England, Germany, New York City, and other cities in the U.S. He retired while serving at Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington, D.C. Mr. Brodnick is survived by his wife, Marion; brother, Louis Brodnick; three daughters and their spouses, Chris and Frank Sweeney, Mary and Frank DeGeorge and Melody and Paul Poetzsch; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He will always be remembered for his work ethic, his devotion to duty, the fleets of airplanes crafted by hand and his kind and loving disposition. Funeral service will be held at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD on Friday, April 6 at 9am, followed by a graveside service with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery at 11am.

Christos Christopoulos, 81, a 43-year resident of Crofton, MD and previously of Washington, D.C. died on Monday, February 27, 2012 at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center of Alzheimer’s Disease after a 3 year illness.
 Born August 20, 1930 in Patras, Greece, he immigrated from Greece in 1951. Christos was employed as a pastry chef, restaurateur, retailer and developer. He was a member of Ss. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Annapolis, MD. Christos split his time between Jupiter, FL and Ocean City, MD. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed travelling and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
 
He was predeceased by a sister, Georgia Zissimos.
 
Christos is survived by his wife, Sophia Christopoulos; his children, Joann (Joe) Steranka of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Madia (Donald) Toll of Gambrills, MD, John (Ellen) Christopoulos of Arnold, MD, Angela (Tommy) Reins of Knoxville, TN and Nick Christopoulos of Baltimore, MD; a sister, Kasiani Skafidas of Patras, Greece; and seven grandchildren, Alexandra of New York, NY, Christopher of Baltimore, MD Stephen of Miami, FL, Jonathan and Michael of Gambrills, MD, Christo of Arnold, MD, and Lexie of Knoxville, TN.

Alice Ward Given, 86, recently of Annapolis and previously of Ocean City, MD, died on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at Heritage Harbour Health and Rehabilitation Center in Annapolis. She was born on September 15, 1925 in Philadelphia, PA. After graduating from college with a degree in accounting, she worked throughout her career supporting small businesses.

Harry Taylor Houchens, Jr., 75, of Annapolis and previously of Kent Island, died on February 24, 2012 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He was born on July 3, 1936 in Beltsville and attended school in Bladensburg. 
Harry, a homebuilder, owned Tru Air Heating and Air Conditioning and Bowie Homes, Inc. for 30 years. He was highly regarded for his strong work ethic and always helping other people. He lived by the motto, “lead by example.” Harry was also a man of determination having overcome many health issues over the years. An avid outdoorsman, he had a passion for fishing and hunting. Harry enjoyed accompanying his father to the horse races. He also enjoyed eating crabs with his family and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Annapolis. 
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, the former Dorothy Hern, three children, two brothers, four sisters, two stepchildren, twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Clare Virginia Baines, 89, passed away on Ash Wednesday, February 22, 2012, surrounded by her loving family at her son’s home in Annapolis.

Clare was born November 4, 1922, in Joliet, Illinois to the late Veronica and Joseph Smutnak. She was one of 11 children. In 1949, Clare married Richard John Baines and together they raised six children, mostly in Park Forest, Illinois. In 1968 they moved to the D.C. area. After Mr. Baines retired, they moved to New Mexico and Arizona. After her husband’s death, Clare moved to Bethany Beach, Delaware.

Clare is survived by three sons, Timothy, Thomas and Edward Baines; three daughters, Nancy Castle, Jean Baines and Laury Todd;three sisters, Ann Nicks, Theresa Hornicak and Ellie Smutnak and one brother, Frank Smutnak. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 25, at 5pm at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD. Interment private. Dorothy Louise McDowell, 89, a 23-year resident of Heritage Harbour in Annapolis and previously of Crofton, MD, died on Wednesday, February 22 at her home after a lengthy illness.

Dorothy was born May 9, 1922 in New York to the late Albert and Marguerite Sheffield. She was a homemaker and was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church and enjoyed oil painting and her aerobics group at Heritage Harbour. 

She was predeceased by her husband, Andrew L. McDowell, who died in 1997.

She is survived by her children; Robert McDowell of Medina, Washington and Carolyn Taylor of Davidsonville, MD and her grandchildren; Andrew Snyder of Odenton, MD and Alison Jayne of Annapolis, MD.

The family will hold a private graveside service for Dorothy. Arrangements by the George P. Kalas Funeral Home. On Saturday, February 18, 2012, Ernest “Ernie” Ridgely Crapster, III, 67, a 34 year resident of Riva, died at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a 12 year illness. Born January 3, 1945 in Baltimore to the late E. Ridgely Crapster, Jr. and the late Mary D. Crapster-Hammerer, Ernie graduated from Glen Burnie High School in 1964 then took several classes at Anne Arundel Community College. He became a Gravure web-pressman and was employed by Quebecor, Inc. (formerly Alco Gravure) in Glen Burnie from 1966-1999. Upon seven years of apprenticeship, Ernie acquired Journeyman status and received many awards during his tenure. 
Ernie attended Annapolis Evangelical Presbyterian Church for over 30 years and in recent years became a member. He enjoyed boating, was an avid gardener, had a keen interest in politics and was a student of the American and world political scene. He supported the NRA and in his later years he enjoyed reading, opera, watching the Discovery Channel and studying scriptures with his wife Fern. Ernie also enjoyed his cat, Joshua, by his side.
 In addition to his parents, Ernie was preceded in death by his two brothers, Eric Reed Crapster and John K. Crapster. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Fern H. Crapster; a nephew, Eric R. Crapster, P.A. and his family; two aunts, Patricia French and Eleanor Farace; his mother-in-law Elfie H. Hardin of Annapolis and numerous cousins.

Maria (Trite) Halper, age 90, of Westminster, MD died Sunday, February 19 in Washington, D.C. at The Washington Home & Community Hospices. She had Alzheimer’s disease.
 
Mrs. Halper was born on August 27, 1921 in New Windsor, MD. She is predeceased by her parents, John B. and Rose Anne (Fritz) Trite. 

Mrs. Halper is survived by her daughter, Rose Marie (Halper) Kim, her son-in-law, Stephen and their daughters Grace Marie and Mimi Rose, all of Accokeek, MD. She is also survived by a sister, Frances (Trite) Snyder of Westminster. 
Additionally, she is predeceased by a sister, Hilda (Trite) Harner and brothers, Donald and Carroll Trite.
 With respect to her wishes, Mrs. Halper will be cremated and her ashes spread over the East River of Manhattan. A celebration of Maria’s life will be held at The Washington Home & Community Hospices on Saturday, March 10 at 2:30 pm.

Lawrence “Larry” Grigsby, 90, of Harwood, MD died on February 17, 2012, at the Mandrin Inpatient Care Center following a brief illness. Originally from King George, VA, Larry served in the US Army prior to and during WWII. He was stationed in the Washington area where he served as a guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers, the White House, and various government buildings, including the FBI building where he guarded the eight German saboteurs in 1942. He deployed to Cuba, where he met and married the love of his life, Luisa Rojas. They returned and resided in the DC area for 51 years where Larry had a career in the bakery business, working for Southern, Bond, and Koester bakeries. 

Following retirement, Larry relocated to live with his daughter in Harwood, MD. He is survived by Luisa, his wife of 66 years; his daughter, Florie Bozzella; his grandchildren, Kristen Bozzella Dixon (Paul) and Kevin Bozzella; his nephew, George Lampin; and, his best friend, Skoshi.
 
He was predeceased by a son, Lawrence, in 1954.
