Robert “Rob” W. Saltzman, Jr., a 14 year resident of Edgewater, died on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at Anne Arundel Medical Center from complications of ALS. Rob was 51.
 
Born June 22, 1959 to Robert W. and Joanne Rosetta Saltzman, Sr., he was a 1977 graduate of Largo High School. Rob was the owner of SEI Grounds Maintenance, a landscaping company based in Edgewater. He was a member of Chesapeake Christian Fellowship in Davidsonville and enjoyed coaching for the Mayo Athletic Assoc, especially his son’s baseball teams.
 
Rob’s interests include baseball, NASCAR, boating and he was an avid Redskins fan. He loved his 1995 Corvette and attending Hot Rod Shows in Ocean City.
 
In addition to his parents, Rob is survived by his wife Kelly Saltzman, whom he married in May of 1989, his sons; Brandon Saltzman of Richmond, VA, and Justin and Christopher Saltzman, both of Edgewater; his brothers James and Kenneth Saltzman, both of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and his sister Lori Mueller of Mayo, Maryland.

Alvin Robert Witcher, age 84, a resident of Maryland since 1952 and of Davidsonville since 1973, died on Sunday, October 17 at Somerford Place, after a six and a half year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born on June 18, 1926 in Sandusky, OH, Alvin served in the U.S. Coast Guard in the Pacific theater during W.W. II. After serving in the war he graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in 1946 and from Case Institute of Technology in 1952. For 31 years, Alvin worked as a naval engineer, specializing in designing propulsion systems, with the U.S. Navy Defense Department. He was a member of NAVSEA.
Alvin was predeceased by his wife, Mary Witcher, who died in 1984. He is survived by a daughter, Alison Rolen of Harwood, MD; a son, Kevin Witcher of Federalsburg, MD; a sister, Jeanette Volk of Bellevue, OH; three grandsons, Austin, Matthew and Luke Rolen all of Harwood, MD; two granddaughters, Kimberly Rolen of Harwood, MD and Mary Witcher of Cheswold, DE. A graveside service will be held on Monday, December 20 at 1:00pm at the Arlington National Cemetery Columbarium. Madine Mavis Pankey de Capiteau “Mimi”, 101, a 26-year resident of Annapolis and previously of North Canton, OH, died on October 17, 2010 from pneumonia at the Ginger Cove Health Center. She was born September 30, 1909 in Brookfield Lin County, MO to the late Riley and Hallie Pankey, and earned an undergraduate degree in speech therapy and drama from Christian College (now Columbia College) in Columbia, MO. In 1936, Mimi married Theodore Francis de Capiteau, who died in 1988, and devoted herself to making a comfortable home for her husband and children. She volunteered at the Canton YWCA in Canton, OH where she was the Chief Executive Officer from 1960 to 1971, and was a life member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood.
 
In addition to her husband, Mimi is predeceased by her daughter, Alice Ann Hall, and a brother, Kenneth Pankey.
 
She is survived by one son, Theodore deCapiteau of Silver City, NM and two grandsons, Peter Hall of Naples, FL and Riley Hall of New Orleans, LA.

Michael “Mike” Terrence Flanagan, 50, a lifelong resident of Davidsonville, MD died of cancer on October 15, 2010 at home with his family by his side.
 
Born December 31, 1959 in Washington, D.C., he served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. America as a jet engine mechanic and received the Navy expeditionary medal. Mike loved music, family and friends.
 
Michael is survived by his mother, Gladys Flanagan of Davidsonville, MD; 1 sister, Deborah Eckard of Rising Sun, MD; 1 nephew, Christopher Lambert of North East, MD; 2 nieces, Nicole and Kelly Eckard of Rising Sun, MD. Mike was predeceased by his father, Daniel Flanagan.

Joyce Ann MacMillan, 66, a resident of Arnold, MD and previously of Millersville, MD died on October 15, 2010 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a lengthy and courageous battle connected with complications from diabetes.
 
Born July 17, 1944 in Derby, CT, to the late Arthur and Julia Derlinger, she graduated from Eastern High School in Baltimore, MD and received her Bachelor of Science degree from Towson State University. Joyce taught grades 2nd thru middle school during her career, including teaching in both Baltimore and New Jersey schools before her retirement from Anne Arundel County Board of Education. Joyce was a devoted grandmother to her four grandchildren and loved her two Labradors, Mac and Magnum.
 
Joyce is survived by her former husband and lifelong friend, Barry E. MacMillan; her children, Jon M. MacMillan of Reedsburg, WI and Jessica (Peter) J. Meissner of Virginia Beach, VA; her siblings, Ronald (Arlene) A. Derflinger of St. Cloud, FL, Sharon (Pat) J. Lynch of Salisbury, MD, Diana (Hank) L. Dr. Roland E. Riley graduated Annapolis High School in 1942 then entered the United States Air Corps 1943, where he served as a metalworker repairing B-24 planes stationed at Tonopah Air Force Base,
 Nevada. He was discharged in 1946 and entered National Chiropractic College graduating in 1950 with DC and ND degrees. He took over the practice of Dr. Henry A. Page on Main St. Annapolis until 1960 when he and his partner Harvey Brandmiller built a home-office near the Navy Marine Stadium on Taylor Ave. He was a member of the National Chiropractic Assoc. and Maryland Chiropractic Assoc. and served 2 terms on the Board of Directors. He treated many members of the Maryland Legislature and received commendation as the longest living practitioner in the State at that time. He often lectured on health issues at Towson State College and participated in many health fairs thru Anne Arundel County. He was a member of the Colonial Players assisting with sound production and acting.
 In 1997 he and his partner Brandmiller retired and moved to Broadcreek Condominiums in Heritage Harbor where they did volunteer work and also travelled extensively throughout the world.
 His life-partner Mr. Brandmiller pre-deceased him in 2008. He is survived by his sister Anne Cromwell of Anchorage, AK and a brother, Thomas A. Riley of Arnold, Md. Interment private. James “Jimmy” Henry Mason, Jr., 56, a 4-year resident of Edgewater, MD and previously of Parkville, MD died on October 14, 2010 at his home of cancer after a 2 year illness.
 
Born September 9, 1954 in Washington, D.C., he graduated from George Mason University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Law Enforcement. James was a special agent and fire arms instructor with the Department of the Interior, an analyst with the Coast Guard and, after retirement, he enjoyed being the handyman at the Arundel Lodge. Jimmy loved all music, played a mean banjo, and could fix anything that broke. He enjoyed 7-11 hot dogs and burger bites, cruising the back roads on Sunday afternoons and telling jokes.
 
James is survived by his wife, Teresa, whom he married in 2004; three children, Alec, Diane and Selina, all of Edgewater, MD; his parents, Colene and Pete Frederick of Fairfax, VA; his step-sister, Liz Fujiwara and step-brother, Scott Frederick. He is also survived by many other family members.

Clara T. DeMarzo “Nana”, 88, a 15-year resident of Annapolis and previously of Arnold, died October 11 at Crofton Care and Rehabilitation Center from complications due to a stroke. She was born August 24, 1922 in New York City.

Clara worked for Suburban Trust Bank as a bookkeeper, C&P Telephone Co. as an account representative, and Long and Foster as a real estate agent. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and The Sons of Italy. Clara was very active in the Heritage Harbour community, was a member of the bridge club, and enjoyed yoga, tai chi and other community activities. She loved spending time with her family, especially her great-grandchildren.

Clara was the wife of the late Peter Joseph DeMarzo whom she married in 1944 and who died on May 28, 2010.

She is survived by one son, Robert (Carol) DeMarzo of Sykesville and one daughter, Mary (Warren) Funk of Crofton. Also survived by three grandchildren, Christopher Green of Wye Mills, Peter J. DeMarzo of Ellicott City and Carrie Lhotsky of Cordova, and three great-grandchildren, Peter and Anna Green of Wye Mills and Dakota Lhotsky of Cordova.

Albert Frank Sole “Al”, 92, a 7-year resident of Leisure World in Silver Spring and previously of Berkshire, Md., died Saturday, October 9, at Mandrin Chesapeake Hospice House. 

Al was born April 30, 1918 in West Virginia and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for Bankers Life and Casualty as an insurance salesman for 40 years. He enjoyed bowling, cooking and sports; he was an avid Yankees fan.
 
Al was predeceased by five brothers, Tony, Dominic, Louie, Amelio and Joseph Sole and three sisters, Theresa and Margaret Sole and Mary Macolino.
 
He is survived by his wife, Colleen, whom he married in 1946; two daughters, Cheryl (John) Garvey of Arlington, Va. and Pamela (Karst) Besteman of Crownsville; one brother, Samuel Sole of New Jersey; four grandchildren, William Albert Devine of Crownsville, Shannon (Andrew) Greb of Pasadena, and Jack and Ryan Elizabeth Garvey both of Arlington; and four great-grandchildren, Malea, Tyler, Caleb and Cooper.

Wendell E. Lilly, Sr., 85, a 65-year resident of Annapolis, MD died on October 9, 2010 at Anne Arundel Medical Center of natural causes.
 
Born February 8, 1925 in Beckley, WV, he owned Lilly Construction Company for many years. Wendell was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Knights of Pythias. He was an avid golfer, loved to dance, travel and read.
 
Wendell was the beloved husband of Marie P. Lilly, whom he married on May 25, 1991; father of Wendell (Christine) Lilly, Jr. of Crownsville, MD, Glen Lilly of Edgewater, MD, Erol (Gina) Lilly of Kent Island, MD, Sylvie (Rick) Louive of Minerva, OH and the late Lynn Harris; brother of Billy Lilly of Baltimore, MD. He is also survived 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter.

George D. Janis, 91, a 60-year resident of Annapolis and previously of Long Island, N.Y., died Friday, October 8, 2010, at the Heritage Harbour Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born December 29, 1918 in Richmond, Va. to the late James and Bessie Gianacopoulos. 

George served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. He was also awarded the Jubilee of Liberty Medal by the French government on the 50th Anniversary of the D-Day invasion. In civilian life, George worked for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring after a 22-year career.
 He was a member of the Model Railroad Club in Baltimore and was a railroad enthusiast. He also enjoyed theater organ music and attending events at Radio City Music Hall in New York. His favorite movie was “Lost Horizon” from 1936.

 In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by his brothers, Spiro and Paul Janis, and his sister, Kay Bibbe.
 He is survived by his wife, Domna, whom he married in 1942; two sons, Jim Janis of Lexington, SC and Philip Janis of Columbia, MD and one daughter, Catherine Teske of Edgewater, MD. He is also survived by two grandchildren.

Irene S. Anderson, a 35-year resident of Edgewater, died October 8 at Anne Arundel Medical Center of heart complications and stroke.
 
Born in Hannover, West Germany, she owned a bar in Viernheim, West Germany during the 1950s that catered to American service personnel stationed in Kafertal, where she met her future husband. In the early 1950s, she immigrated to the United States and became a naturalized American citizen in Kansas City, Kan. in 1965. As a military wife, she lived in Germany, Kentucky, Kansas, Virginia and Maryland.
 
While living in Radcliffe, Ky., she began her interest in antiques and collectibles, frequenting local yard and garage sales, and began buying and selling for profit. She became a successful business woman, owning and operating one of the largest retail antique businesses in Maryland, as well as a local convenience store in Edgewater. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. James Russell Anderson.
 
She is survived by three sons, Jason Anderson of Virginia Beach, Va., Mark Anderson of Panama City Beach, Fla. and Ray Anderson of Fairfax, Va.; and three grandchildren, Michael, Jacqueline and Katherine.
 
A graveside service will be offered at 10 a.m. on Monday, November 22 at Arlington National Cemetery. Elisa Leanore Edwards was born October 23, 1952 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Rosendo and Teresa Obra. She peacefully departed this life on Thursday, October 7, 2010, in her home in Clinton, Maryland.
Elisa Edwards also known as “Lisa”, “Mommy”, “Ma Ma”, and “Nana” was gentle, caring, loving, and strong. She grew up in Hawaii, and always called it home. There she met husband Bruce Edwards, moved to the mainland and started her own family. Her beautiful personality and huge heart touched all our hearts and souls. She was not just a daughter, wife, sister, mother, grandmother but also, a confidant, counselor, wound healer, heart repairer and listener of all problems. 
Elisa’s life would seem too short to many, but those who were touched by her understood that the quality of existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which one lives. Her smile and laughter brought so much joy to her family and friends. She gave us all such courage and hope and reminded us of the preciousness of life.
She enjoyed sewing, music, traveling, Jessica’s Filipino food, and spending time with her girls. She devoted much of her time, energy, and love to her girls and her grandson. It brought her such joy to see her girls play volleyball. She made every effort to make each game to cheer her girls on because she was one of their biggest fans. The birth of her grandson brought so much joy and excitement to her life. The time they spent together was priceless; she could spend all day with her buddy and would never want that day to end.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her mother, Teresa Obra, her friend and husband, Bruce Edwards, 2 devoted and loving daughters, Catherine and Jessica Edwards, a grandson, Kevin Proctor Jr., a brother, Rosendo Obra Jr., 2 sisters, Fe Reed and Lillian Williamson. She will also, be truly missed by a host of extended family members and friends who loved her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her father, Rosendo Obra, sister, Janice Obra, and nephew, Richard Reed.

Melvin Pearson Asquith “Mel”, 71, a 15-year resident of Riva, died at his home on October 6 of natural causes. He was born November 4, 1938 in Annapolis. Mel was a parking garage attendant in Annapolis and enjoyed restoring and collecting antique slot machines, playing slots in Atlantic City, holding and going to yard sales, and playing the guitar for friends and family.
 
Mel was predeceased by his parents, Peter P. Aisquith and Doris R. Brown and his brother, Harry R. Asquith. He is survived by one sister, Deborah Snyder of Glen Burnie.
