Retired Navy Cmdr. Orin J. Durey, 81, a resident of Annapolis for 34 years and formerly of Chevy Chase, died of a stroke Oct. 8 at the Heritage Harbour Health and Rehabilitation Center. Known as "Jay," Cmdr. Durey was born March 8, 1926, in Huron, S.D., and graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans. An aviator, he served in the Navy for more than 20 years, retiring in 1964. Most recently he worked for the State of Maryland as coordinator of federal funds. 


He is survived by his wife, Kerstin M. Durey, whom he married Sept. 5, 1969; one son, Orin J. Durey of Canada; one daughter, Pam Tynes of Newport News, Va.; one brother, Richard Durey of Jonesboro, Tenn.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. 


Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Nov. 13 at Arlington National Cemetery, where friends should gather at the Administration Building by 2:30 p.m. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home in Edgewater.

Edwin Taylor Smoot, 81, of North Brunswick, N.J., for three years and previously of Annapolis for 15 years, died Oct. 3 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J. 


Born Nov. 11, 1925, in Largent, W.Va., Mr. Smoot was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a manager at Mack Trucks in Bladensburg where he worked for 31 years before retiring in 1982. 


Surviving are his wife, Rose M. Smoot, whom he married Dec. 4, 1948; one son, Edwin B. Smoot of North Brunswick; a stepsister, J. Irene Hoff of Nebraska; two half sisters, Neoma Fleece of Romney, W.Va., and Wanda Smoot of Keyser, W.Va.; and two grandchildren. 


A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 27 at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. Burial will be private.

Claire Manning Fitzgerald, 74, a four-year resident of Annapolis and formerly of Port Washington, Long Island, N.Y., died of heart failure Oct. 1 at home. 


Mrs. Fitzgerald was born June 13, 1933, in Hudson, Mass., where she attended St. Michael's School and Academy. She graduated from St. Paul's Academy in Washington, D.C. 


She worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation both in Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles. 


Her interests included entertaining friends and family. 


She was the widow of Bernard Joseph Fitzgerald, her husband of more than 41 years who died in 1996. Surviving are three sons, Johnathan Fitzgerald of Fairfax, Va., Bernard Fitzgerald of Port Washington, N.Y., and Michael Fitzgerald of Annapolis; one daughter, Sarah Stevenson of Fairfax, Va.; two brothers, Jay Manning of Annandale, Va., and Peter Manning of Worcester, Mass.; five sisters, Alice Manning of Baltimore, Joan Cusick of Tampa, Fla., Martha Costello of Huntingtown, Sarah O'Leary of Highland in Howard County, and Jane Alvis of Indianapolis; and two grandchildren.

Retired Navy Capt. Eugene F. Shine, 82, of Annapolis, died of natural causes Sept. 30 at his home. 


Capt. Shine was born in South Boston, Mass., on July 3, 1925, and grew up in the tough Irish Catholic streets of "Southie." He quit high school to enlist in the Navy in 1942 and served aboard the submarine USS Cuttlefish in the North Sea area. In 1944 he was accepted to study at the Naval Academy Preparatory School and in 1945 received a fleet appointment to the academy with the Class of 1949. As a plebe he received his "N" as lightweight boxing champion. 


He served in the Navy for more than 32 years, including World War II service in submarines and three combat tours in Korea. He was aboard the USS Endicott, a destroyer minesweeper, and flew F9F attack aircraft in 70 combat missions from the carriers USS Boxer and Oriskany. 


He participated in the Lebanon, Haiti, Cuban and Dominican Republic crises and was awarded numerous combat decorations. Among his awards were the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, four Air Medals, the Naval Expeditionary Medal with Combat V, the Navy Expeditionary Medal for Cuba, the U.N. Service Medal and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation. 


He received a bachelor of science degree in electronic engineering at the Naval Postgraduate School in 1954 and a master of science degree in management and industrial engineering in 1964 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He also attended the Naval War College. 


He had aeronautical engineering duty from 1962 to 1975. Prior to retirement he was commanding officer of the Naval Air Rework Facility at Norfolk, Va., from 1972 to 1975. 


Capt. Shine received a law degree from George Mason University. After completing a career in law as a partner in a Washington, D.C., firm, he retired to community service and pro bono cases. He received numerous community services awards including the executive citation from the Citizens of Anne Arundel County and the Olde Severna Park Improvement Association Community Service Award. 


Surviving are his wife of 58 years, the former Joan Elyse Berg; three daughters, Cathy Levey of Columbia, Christy Norman of Bowie and Sunny Erwin of Virginia Beach, Va.; and five grandchildren. 


A Life Celebration will be held on October 14, from 3 to 6 p.m. at THE GEORGE P. KALAS FUNERAL HOME, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD. A memorial service will be held on October 15, 2007 at 10 a.m. at the Naval Academy Chapel. Visitors should enter the yard through Gate 8 at Route 450. Burial will follow in the academy Columbarium.

Theresa Rampolla, 91, of Annapolis and previously of Capitol Heights for 33 years, died of natural causes Sept. 27 at Riva Terrace III Assisted Living in Annapolis. 


Born April 29, 1916, in Farmington, W.Va., Mrs. Rampolla worked as a nursing assistant for the Maryland state Home Health Department. She also was a homemaker. 


She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Annapolis and a former member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Forestville. She loved to cook for her family, work crossword puzzles, play solitaire and watch family television shows. 


Surviving are her son, Roger Rampolla of Beltsville; her daughter, Carolyn Schumaker of Annapolis; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. 


A celebration of her life will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. A Mass of Christian burial will be said at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 N. Bestgate Road. Burial will follow in Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville.

William "Bill" Bailey Jr., 61, a longtime resident of Davidsonville, died from a sudden cardiac event Sept. 27 at the Anne Arundel Medical Center. 


Born Sept. 9, 1946, in Kentucky, Mr. Bailey graduated from the University of Maryland, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in business. He also attended Special Operations Training School in Fort Bragg, N.C. 


Mr. Bailey served in the Army as a Green Beret with Special Forces during which time he was involved in military campaigns in six of the seven continents. He was an engineer and demolitions expert. 


He was also the owner of a bar, entrepreneur and superintendent of project management for Birchwood Homes. 


His interests included the Baltimore Ravens football, gardening, golf, reading, playing basketball, exercising and challenging himself. He was a regular at the Green Turtle in Edgewater. 


Surviving are his wife, Paula Keenan; one step-son, Joe Keenan Jr. of Annapolis; one daughter, Dawn Myers of York, Pa.,and two stepdaughters Erin Seif of Collierville, Tenn., and Jennifer Hoey of Columbia, Md.; one sister, Jean King of Davidsonville; his mother, Mary L. Helmick of Simpson, W.Va.; and six grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Donald and Douglass Bailey, and Wanda King. 


Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. on Monday at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. Interment will be held at a later date.

Virginia L. Ward, 81, of Edgewater, died of cancer Sept. 26 at the Mandrin Hospice House in Harwood. 


Born Feb. 9, 1926, in Wythe County, Va., Ms. Ward retired in 1988 from the Canteen Corp. where she had worked for many years. She moved to Edgewater four years ago and was a member of the South County Senior Center. 


Her interests included travel, spending time in downtown Annapolis feeding the ducks and eating dinner at a nearby restaurant. 


Surviving are two daughters, Patti Foster of Edgewater and Donna Hungerford of Mount Airy; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and her companion, Joe Blonder. She had a deceased grandson. 


A celebration of life will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, where services will be at 1 p.m. Monday. Burial will follow in Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville.
