Pamela Joyce (Jones) Thomas was born on November 27, 1954, in Pine Valley, New York, and moved with her family to Alexandria, VA, in 1959. Music was one of the great joys of her life — she had a particular fondness for live shows and would go to concerts with friends and family right up until her final months. She also treasured the beach, and later in life discovered sewing and quilting. After moving to the Outer Banks, Pam expanded her creative talents into weaving rugs and tapestries on the loom at Endless Possibilities, a nonprofit supporting the local community. Dr. Marc Ashley Rogers, of Annapolis, Maryland, passed away peacefully at his home on July 19, 2026, at the age of 72.

Born on January 6, 1954, in Hamilton, New York, Marc was the son of Professor William B. Rogers and Luella Marcks Rogers. He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandparents, Henry and Mildred Marcks; his brothers, Bruce M. Rogers and Stuart P. Rogers; and his uncle, Ronald J. Marcks.

Marc is survived by his wife, Wendy Rogers; his sister, Andrea Rogers Lindemann; his aunt, Barbara Marcks; his sister-in-law, Diane Rogers; his brother-in-law, Tim Lindemann; and many beloved nieces and nephews, Alex, Anna, Andy, Matty, Emily, Christina, Myles, Johnny, and Abby, along with their spouses and children.

Marc dedicated his professional life to teaching, research, and mentoring students in the field of exercise physiology. He retired in 2020 after more than 30 years as a professor in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Maryland. Earlier in his career, he served on the faculty at Michigan State University from 1987 to 1990. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the State University of New York at Cortland in 1976, a Master of Education degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in 1979, and a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities in 1985. He was also a proud graduate of Homer Central High School, Class of 1972.

Marc’s love of sports began in childhood and remained a defining part of his life. From Little League baseball and high school athletics to playing baseball in college, he embraced competition and teamwork. Along with his brothers and friends, he spent countless winter days playing hockey on the village green, on frozen ponds around Homer, and during late-night sessions at the college rink.

Marc became an avid runner, competing in hundreds of races over the years. In 1984, he won the Greater St. Louis Marathon with a time of 2:25:10, an impressive achievement by any standard. Later in life, he developed a passion for long-distance cycling and enjoyed extended rides throughout the United States with close friends. He also gave back to the sports community as a respected high school and college basketball referee for many years.

Marc devoted countless hours to supporting the Special Olympics. In addition to serving as a volunteer basketball referee for more than 25 years, he participated in the Maryland and Delaware Polar Plunges, raising thousands of dollars for the organization. True to Marc’s outgoing and generous nature, each year he swam out to the rescue divers, known as the “frogmen,” to give them a high five.

His generosity extended far beyond athletics. During the summers, Marc volunteered at Camp Sunrise, a pediatric oncology camp in Crownsville, Maryland. He also volunteered with the SHARE Food Network in Prince George’s County.

During the Christmas season, Marc filled several shoeboxes with gifts for children through Operation Christmas Child. He also quietly prepared care packages containing warm socks, gloves, and sandwiches and drove through Washington, D.C., distributing them to people experiencing homelessness. One of Marc’s favorite memories was traveling to Union Mission in Washington, D.C., to support inner-city children. One year, a child mistook him for Santa Claus—and that day, he was. Acts of kindness such as these reflected his deep compassion and desire to help others.

Friendship and family were central to Marc’s life. He maintained lifelong relationships with friends from every stage of his journey and always found time to gather for class reunions, family reunions, lacrosse tournaments, and cycling adventures. He loved to travel, whether visiting family throughout the United States and abroad or attending sporting events with those he loved.

In 2010, Marc and Wendy began attending Evangelical Presbyterian Church on Ridgely Avenue in Annapolis. Marc remained an active member of the church until his death, faithfully participating in the men’s Bible study and finding strength in his faith and fellowship.

Sue Jahn Shaffer Tihansky passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 17, 2026 in Edgewater, Maryland. She was surrounded by love and her incredibly dedicated community of caregivers. Her spirit and energy continue to swirl and move among us. She will be forever in our hearts and minds.

Sue was an extraordinary woman. Born May 29, 1931 in New Philadelphia, Ohio, to Clyde Wallace Shaffer and Helen Catharine Johns, Sue lived life to the fullest, and brought fierce determination, creativity and persistence to all aspects of her life. She was dedicated to truth and goodness and finding success, no matter the venture. She was never afraid to take on big, new or complicated tasks. If it doesn’t work the first time, we will try, try again! She was a true force who would be your strongest ally when you needed it.

Sue demanded excellence from herself as well as those around her. She firmly believed that anything is possible if you keep at it, and she would remind you that a winner is a loser who tries one more time. She was always ready to help celebrate your accomplishment no matter how big or how small. She would gladly share the celebratory bubbly, but not the tiramisu, so make sure there is enough to go around!

Sue wanted to make everything around her better. She was a big thinker, dedicated to learning, improving and helping others do the same. She readily shared her ideas, observations and thoughts in sketches and notes and had a special knack for delivering sharp zinging comments that could be brutally honest yet incredibly helpful for those willing to accept them. When Sue was involved, life was more beautiful, more vibrant and more memorable. It also included lots of butter, dark chocolate, whipped cream or even a hot fudge sundae.

When they were in their early teens, Sue and younger sister Ann Shaffer Koenig moved with their parents from Ohio to Coral Gables, Florida. They immersed themselves in their new tropical environment, trading the giant showy peonies of the Midwest for exotic cattleya orchids and fragrant gardenias. The family eventually settled in Tampa where Sue attended Plant High School, and then earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Tampa.

Sue married Basil “Hank” Daniel Tihansky in Tampa, Florida on October 10, 1959. They had three children—Ann, Jahn and Miles—and raised them in a creative environment. Their home was a lifetime project of shared artistic collaboration. Over the years, as the house was remodeled, renovated and decorated, it was a learning laboratory, and an evolving gallery that showcased the combined artistry, skills, craftsmanship and creative expressions of Sue and Hank. They were ‘do it yourselfers’ fueled by Sue’s ideas and executed by Hank’s craftsmanship. Sue had an incredible eye for home decoration and fashion and the house was her stylish showroom. If Sue could dream it, Hank could design and build it. Their children learned right along with them. As parents, they taught and encouraged each of their children to try and learn how things work using different tools and artistic media to express themselves. Sue and Hank were unconventional and open to trying new things. During those years, Hank built a rock wall along the east side of the house and created an indoor waterfall that trickled down the rocks into a pond in the living room; they carved ‘Happy Mother’s Day’ into the freshly poured cement for the new marble windowsills, and somehow the new tile floors were finished just in time for Christmas. The family celebrated these accomplishments together, enriched by the experiences. As time moved on, Sue continued to polish and refine both the interior and exterior of the home, filling it with treasures she created or collected from around the world.

For Sue, art and creative artistic expression were central. Sue earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Tampa and worked toward her Master of Fine Arts at the University of South Florida (USF). She studied with artist Bill Pachner in Clearwater, FL. Bill encouraged her to develop her own style and expression through oil painting. She was extremely grateful for his nurturing guidance and maintained her relation with him and her fellow Studio 1212 painters for many years.

She began her early advertising career as a layout artist at the Jordan Marsh department store in Coral Gables, FL. She grew her skills in layout, illustrating, copywriting, typeface and design as she continued working at department stores Robinson’s, Maas Brothers, and ultimately at Jacobson’s where she was the Creative Director. Throughout her career she conceived and managed advertising campaigns that promoted Florida fashion and lifestyle while incorporating local history, information about nature, geography and landmarks that taught readers more about Florida and its unique treasures. She was also dedicated to creating socially responsible messaging that improved the communities she served.

Sue and Hank exhibited their artworks together at many art shows during the 1960’s and 70’s including the Gasparilla Sidewalk Art Show, the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival and the Cedar Key Art Festival, where in 1967, Sue won First Prize for her painting titled, ‘American Girl.’ Later in life she took a beginner class in watercolor painting through the USF Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). She quickly mastered the medium, converted her living room into a studio and began teaching others. She continued to study, enrolling in many classes and workshops. In the early 2000’s she won several prizes for her paintings at the annual Strawberry Festival in Plant City, FL. Later, she participated in a watercolor workshop in the Tuscany region of Italy with artist Thomas Schaller. She remembered this as a life changing experience she wishes she had done sooner.

She used her skills in layout, design and messaging throughout her life, volunteering to support many organizations she believed in; including her collaborative painting Studio 1212, OLLI, Hillsborough County Commissioner Jan Platt’s political campaign, Burgert Brothers Historical Photo Calendar, the Hillsborough County Friends of the Library, the Davis Island Yacht Club, Florida Bibliophile Society, the Fellowship of American Bibliophilic Societies, and the University of Tampa.

Many years after Hank’s death in 1984, she had the good fortune to meet John “Jack” Patrick Walsh at OLLI. They became a remarkable couple that shared many interests ranging from the arts, science, politics, geography and history. For more than 15 years, they were actively involved together with OLLI, both of them volunteering, attending and teaching as they made many wonderful friends together. Sue and Jack traveled extensively with Jack supporting Sue’s creative activities. He was a fabulous cook and he helped Sue share the beauty of her home and host many wonderful holidays with family and friends.

Sue was a lover of books from her earliest years. She started collecting children’s books and then expanded her collection interests to include antiquarian maps and books about Florida history and the natural environment. Preserving Florida’s unique natural resources was always important to her and her collection reflects how dedicated she was to this issue. She joined the Fellowship of the American Bibliophilic Societies or FABS where she participated in their annual tours and became very active with the Florida Bibliophile Society (FBS), creating their newsletter for many years. This challenged her to combine all her skills and passions related to books, art, layout and sharing ideas into one creative outlet. It also connected her to many members and leaders across this community. She was very proud of each issue.

Sue believed strongly in the press (her father had been a newspaper man) and the responsibility of the media and the importance of getting involved, showing up for what you believe in and sticking up for your ideas. She dreamed of owning a newspaper, so she could share her ideas widely. If she owned a restaurant, it would be the kind where you eat what the chef prepares!

In her last years, her eyesight diminished and she was unable to pursue her areas of great passion, but she continued to listen to audiobooks, attended the Bibliophile Society meetings, kept up with political affairs and stayed engaged with issues that mattered most, especially her children.

Sue was immensely proud of her three children and her one grandchild. She took interest in all that they did, always encouraging them to shoot higher, try harder and keep at it.
Sue was predeceased by her parents, Clyde Wallace Shaffer and Helen Catharine Johns; her sister, Ann Shaffer Koenig; her husband, Basil “Hank” Daniel Tihansky, and her partner John “Jack” Patrick Walsh.

Sue is survived by her devoted children, Ann Bavolack Tihansky (partner David Arthur Easter) of Annapolis, MD, Jahn Shaffer Tihansky (wife Patricia Roberta Towne Tihansky) of West River, MD, and Miles Basil Tihansky (wife Kimberly Dale McNeill) of Peyton, CO; as well as her granddaughter, Anastasia August Arango of Tampa, FL.

The family plans to hold a Memorial Art Show and Celebration of Life in her Tampa home at a later date. In lieu of flowers or cards, please get involved in issues you care about, write a letter to the editor, support your local library and bookseller. Support the arts in any way that you can. Take a class, sponsor a student, donate art supplies, help prevent blindness, support Hospice. Above all, do your best, keep learning and express yourself.

They were raising four children which involved many Friday nights when high school kids would spontaneously gather at their house to enjoy a movie on the new Betamax machine, for those who remember what they were.

After their children graduated and moved away, Judy and Don left Northern VA for Annapolis, MD. There they enjoyed many weekends on their boat 'Just For Fun' with their Children and Grandchildren. This is also the place where Judy could host her legendary family Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings that their Children and Grandchildren will never forget.

Judy and Don traveled all over the world, from Singapore and Peru to Egypt and Russia. Their favorite place, however, where they visited every year for 50 years was Maui, Hawaii. Maui was a great setting for Judy's beloved hobby of photography, which is evident by her voluminous collection of photo books she made over the years.

Judy is survived by her husband, Don; her sister, Janet Weese; her children, Guy Wallace, Scott Wallace (Mary), Kim Brinkley (Ed) and Jay Morrissette (Jennifer) and her cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, beloved nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Judy’s life at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd, Edgewater, MD on Thursday, August 13 from 1 to 3 and from 6 to 8 pm. At a later date, Judy’s remains will be spread in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of her beloved Maui.

Roberta “Bobbie” Jane Grace, 85, of Annapolis, Maryland, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2026, in the presence of family and friends. Born on September 17, 1941 in Baltimore, Maryland, Bobbie was the cherished daughter of Robert and Madeline Grace.

Bobbie graduated from Saint Agnes Hospital School of Nursing in Baltimore and shortly thereafter joined the United States Navy Nurse Corps. Following basic training, she began her Navy career in 1964 as an Ensign at the Naval Hospital in Saint Albans, New York. She went on to serve nine tours of duty throughout the United States and one tour aboard the Naval Hospital Ship USS Repose off the coast of Vietnam. Of all her assignments, she treasured her time aboard the USS Repose as one of the most meaningful experiences of her life.

Throughout her distinguished career, Bobbie earned the respect and admiration of those who served alongside her. She was known as an exceptionally competent and compassionate nurse, a dedicated Naval Officer, and an inspiring leader in the Nurse Corps. She rose to the rank of Captain in 1987 and completed two additional assignments, the last at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, before retiring in June 1991.

Bobbie's life was defined by service. Whether caring for wounded service members, supporting her church and community, helping family and friends, or ministering to patients with extraordinary compassion, she quietly devoted herself to others. She possessed a servant's heart, giving generously of her time and talents. Her kindness was thoughtful and intentional, and every gift she gave reflected how deeply she knew and cared for the people in her life.

A lifelong learner, Bobbie was an avid reader with an extraordinary personal library. Her shelves held everything from classic literature and theology to history, biographies, and military accounts. Rarely was a book left untouched—its pages filled with highlighted passages, folded corners, and handwritten notes that reflected her thoughtful mind, intellectual curiosity, and deep faith.

Bobbie was a devout Christian and active member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Annapolis. She faithfully served in many areas of the church, and because of her lifelong love of music, became a valued member of the choir for many years. She found great joy in worship, treasured the music of the church, and formed lasting friendships within her church family.

She was also an accomplished photographer and rarely arrived anywhere without a camera in hand, eager to preserve the moments that mattered. Her photographs captured family celebrations, Navy friendships, vacations, and everyday memories, many of which continue to adorn the homes of those she loved.

Following retirement, Bobbie developed a special affection for Virginia's Northern Neck, where her extended family gathered throughout the year. Cracking crabs on the Fourth of July became one of her favorite traditions, and she delighted in clearing the kitchen so she could prepare her famous crab imperial. Every Thanksgiving, family members looked forward to receiving a year's supply of her homemade chutney, and she never arrived without Navy memorabilia to share. Her visits were eagerly anticipated, and everyone smiled when "the Captain" pulled into the driveway.

Bobbie is survived by her cousins, Donna Owen of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Rob Grace of Kilmarnock, Virginia, and Paul Pugh of Marlton, New Jersey, as well as many beloved family members and dear friends whose lives were enriched by her love and generosity.

Roberta "Bobbie" Grace lived with unwavering faith, quiet strength, and a deep commitment to serving others. Her legacy of service, compassion, faith, and love will be remembered by all who knew her.

A memorial service celebrating Bobbie's life will take place on Saturday, August 22 at 11 AM at Calvary United Methodist Church, 301 Rowe Blvd, Annapolis, MD 21401.

In lieu of flowers, consider planting a tree or making a memorial donation in Bobbie’s name to your local hospice organization.

“Aviation wasn’t just his career—it was his lifelong passion, and he truly believed it was in his blood.”

JB McCollough, 95, of Edgewater, Maryland, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2026, with his beloved wife, Carrol, and his daughter, Loretta, by his side.

JB was born on September 25, 1930, in Webb City, Oklahoma, to Dorothy Lue Trogdon and Bill Bryan McCollough. He graduated from Capitol Hill High School in Oklahoma City in 1948 before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. He was stationed at the U.S. Naval Supply Depot in Clearfield, Utah, and in 1951 was deployed to Korea, where he served one year of combat duty with Headquarters and Service Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Division.

Following his military service, JB attended Central State College in Edmond, Oklahoma, before transferring to the University of Oklahoma, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering in 1956.

JB devoted his professional life to aviation, a passion that began at the age of seven when his mother gave him a model airplane kit. That simple gift sparked a lifelong love of airplanes and flight. He often said that aviation was “in his blood.” While stationed in Utah, he became part owner of a World War II Stearman aircraft and spent every opportunity he could in the air.

After graduating from the University of Oklahoma, JB joined Cessna Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas, where he worked for six years as an aeronautical engineer and flight test pilot. During his career with Cessna, he flight tested and certified the Cessna 210, the Cessna 185, and several seaplane models, including the 172, 175, and 185.

He later joined the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Academy in Oklahoma City as an instructor in Flight Test Training. In 1967, he transferred to Washington, D.C., where he served as an instructor in the FAA Office of Training before becoming Manager of the Flight Safety Research Branch within the Systems Research and Development Service. In 1979, he transferred to the FAA Technical Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey, where he continued in that leadership role. He returned to Washington, D.C., in 1988 as the FAA representative to the Office of the Federal Coordinator for Meteorological Research and Supporting Services (OFCM).

JB retired from the FAA in 1989 after a distinguished career dedicated to improving aviation safety. Retirement allowed him to enjoy many of the activities he loved most, including motorcycling, sailing, and boating on the Chesapeake Bay. He also rekindled his longtime passion for photography, becoming especially fond of capturing the beauty of waterfalls.

JB was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Dr. Bill (“Billy”) McCollough; his son, Val McCollough; and his first wife, Renee. JB and Val shared a love of whitewater kayaking and together earned a Presidential Sports Award in 1973.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, Carrol; his daughters, Lori (Alan) Peters of Sandy, Utah; Loretta McCollough of Castle Rock, Colorado; and Angela (Keith) Richards of Layton, Utah; his stepchildren, Jeanne (Paul) Bellis of Stevensville, Maryland, and David Sears of Sanger, Texas; nine grandchildren; and nineteen great-grandchildren.

JB was a proud member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in Crystal Falls, Michigan. He was deeply proud of his service as a United States Marine and remained devoted throughout his life to God, his country, and the aviation profession that defined so much of his life’s work.

His family will remember him as a man of enduring curiosity. Whether in the cockpit of an airplane, on the water, behind a camera, or surrounded by those he loved, JB lived a life marked by continuous learning and adventure.

A memorial service celebrating JB’s life will be held at a later date.

Benjamin Hamilton Winters, 93, a resident of Shady Side, MD and former longtime resident of Cheverly, MD, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Ben was born on June 16, 1933, in Staten Island, New York. He was the second eldest of four children born to the late Benjamin H. Winters, Sr., and Hortense Carroll Winters. His childhood was shaped during the Great Depression and WWII eras by his large extended family with Irish Catholic roots. He lived his life defined by an overall sense of optimism and always looked on the bright side of things, a trait inherited from his mother. Ben was a hard worker who rarely sat idle, following an example set by his father.

His early education began at Sacred Heart School on Staten Island and then St. Peter’s Preparatory School in Jersey City, New Jersey. Ben earned a Bachelor of Science degree from St. Peter’s University in 1955, a Master of Science degree from the University of Delaware in 1957, and a Ph.D. from The Catholic University of America in 1963. All of his degrees were in physics, with a concentration in mathematics.

In 1956, while attending the University of Delaware, he met the love of his life – Anne Baldwin – and they married five years later. Theirs was a true partnership of mutual respect and deep abiding love, and over the years, they grew their family to include three children. In subsequent decades, Ben became a doting grandfather and great-grandfather.

Ben dedicated over 30 years of his professional career to serving his country, through scientific research involving fiber optics and lasers, for the Department of Defense (NSA) at a laboratory in College Park. Prior to that, during the last year of President Kennedy’s administration, he worked at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center where his dissertation was used to study carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

In addition, Ben was a born teacher. While in graduate school, he survived on a stipend plus part-time teaching salaries from Gonzaga High School, Theodore Roosevelt High School, and Trinity College. He was also an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland’s University College, teaching an evening mathematics class each semester for over 40 years. In both capacities, as scientific researcher and teacher, he was respected for his thoughtful intelligence, integrity, steadfastness, and sage advice.

Outside of work, Ben found joy in the outdoors. He enjoyed gardening, whether it was tending to his roses and small vegetable garden in Cheverly or making sure the front flower bed in Shady Side was nicely adorned. He was often entertained by the daily visits of a variety of birds that came to his backyard feeder. Ben also liked to travel. Among his favorite destinations were Ireland, Italy, and a train trip across the Canadian countryside. Additionally, he relished taking his family camping to several national parks in the western U.S. as well as to several European countries. In each place, he found beauty in its landscape, architecture, and history. He appreciated a nice sunrise and often documented the daily angles of the sunrises near his home on the Chesapeake Bay.

However, his favorite hobby of all was fishing. Ben loved fishing – whether from the community pier, on the sandy surf, or in a boat that was caught in a storm. He loved being in, near, or on the water. He was a 30-plus year member of the Surf Angler’s Club, taking part in their annual Mid-Atlantic fishing tournament in Ocean City, Maryland with the Burke Team.

In addition to outdoor interests, Ben liked to work around the house. His renovation skills and ambition were legendary; knocking down walls was a favorite pastime! Ben enjoyed music of all kinds, especially classical, Celtic/Irish folk songs, 1950’s pop, and country-western oldies. He and Anne were always up for dancing, even when accidentally stumbling upon a honkytonk bar in the backstreets of Kobe, Japan. Ben was also a voracious reader, particularly of historical novels and biographies, which he liked to pass along to family members to discuss. He closely followed politics but abhorred incivility. Among his favorite things were watching Jeopardy and WWII documentaries, enjoying a cold beer or glass of white wine, chocolate in any form, and making large Sunday breakfasts for his family.

Ben was a quiet person, but one with strong faith throughout his life. In his younger years, he served as an altar boy in Sacred Heart Parish. As an adult, he and Anne worked with a social justice program for the Archdiocese of Washington, and later they volunteered with the Engaged Encounter program at St. Ambrose parish in Cheverly.

He felt strongly about the need for fairness and cared about his community. His lifetime of activities reflected these values. He led the local PTA at Chevery-Tuxedo Elementary School, served on the board of the Idlewilde Civic League, and worked with the National Council of Christians and Jews on an important issue of the time.

But, above all, Ben cherished his family, and they him. Those who knew him will remember his deeply held values, quick sense of humor, generosity of time and spirit, great wisdom, honesty and, yes, a penchant for frugality. His memory lives on in the lives he touched, the lessons he shared, and the love he gave so freely. He will be missed more than words can say.

Ben is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Anne; children Barbara, David (Kirsten), and Kristin; grandchildren Katie (Cody), Quinn, Megan (Eric), and Phoebe; great-grandchildren Austin, Adalynn, and Zoey; a host of fun-loving in-laws, ‘outlaws’, nieces and nephews; and the devoted family beagle, Daisy. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers William T. Winters and Stephen X. Winters, and sister Marilyn Winters Cangro.

A mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, August 22, at 11:00am, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in West River, Maryland. The burial will be private.
