Our dear brother and uncle, Stephen “Steve” Christopher Ulricksen, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2025.  He was born to loving parents, the late Rex and Elizabeth Ulricksen, on Independence Day, July 4, 1952, in Crowley, Louisiana. He grew up in a happy home in New Orleans for the first nine years of his life and enjoyed subsequent moves to Houston, Shreveport, Denver, and Los Angeles with his family. Steve graduated from the University of Utah and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity where he met his life-long friends. He took off on his first real adventure working for Exxon for two years in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, above the Arctic Circle where he was a weather observer, measuring temperatures up to 90 degrees below zero. He moved to Ocean City, Maryland, and then on to Annapolis where he became partners in what is now Liljenquist and Beckstead, where he worked for 47 years. Steve traveled the U. S. and Europe extensively. He visited all 50 states and loved visits to Colorado where he camped and hiked in the Rocky Mountains with his family. He also took the opportunity to visit most of the National Parks. He was a true adventurer who enjoyed nature. Steve was able to walk the entire length of the C&O Canal that runs from Cumberland, Maryland to Georgetown, D.C., as well as walking 85 miles along the Appalachian Trail. His favorite local spot was Quiet Waters in Annapolis where he walked hundreds of miles each year. Steve was also a historian and enjoyed sharing the rich history of Maryland and Virginia with his nieces and nephews on rides through the countryside.
There were three things that Steve loved dearly – his family, his work family, and his country. He was loyal, kind, caring, and generous. He will live in our hearts forever.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Rex and Betty Ulricksen. He is survived by his sister, Nanette Richard (Jeff); brothers, Craig Ulricksen and Brian Ulricksen (Kammie); nephews, Bradley Richard (Shiho) and Harry Ulricksen (Courtney); nieces, Jennifer Kawakami (Jason) and Sara Ulricksen (Ariel); and great nieces, Aimi and Annika Richard and Tatum Washington.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Steve's life on Thursday, February 13 from 6 to 8 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD 21037.

Friends and family are also invited to celebrate Steve's life on Friday, February 21 at 2 pm at The Archdiocese of Denver Funeral Home at Mount Olivet, 12801 W 44th Ave, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033, followed by burial at 3 pm at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery.

Barbara Lee Merritt, RDH, a dedicated dental professional, mentor, and leader in the Maryland dental community, passed away on February 7, 2025, at Hospice of the Chesapeake in Pasadena, MD. She was born on March 3, 1953, at Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City, Louisiana.

Barbara’s passion for dental hygiene was evident throughout her lifelong career. She earned her Associate of Science degree in dental hygiene from Allegany Community College before continuing her education at the University of Maryland at Baltimore Dental School, where she graduated in 1981. She was deeply involved in the Maryland Dental Hygienists’ Association, serving as president from 1994 to 1995, and was a respected leader in her field. Her commitment to excellence extended to the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners, where she served from 2007 to 2014. Additionally, Barbara was a Clinical Examiner on the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments team from 2007 to 2025, helping shape the next generation of dental professionals

For over 25 years, Barbara worked as a dental hygienist for Dr. Joe Milzman in Annapolis, where she formed lasting relationships with her patients. Known for her kindness, professionalism, and dedication to oral health, she brought comfort and confidence to everyone she treated

Barbara’s greatest joy, however, was her family and loved ones. She is survived by her devoted husband, David Gaeng; her sister, Peggy Jones; brother-in-law, Randy Jones; nephews Steve Smith and Richard Smith; great nephews Ryan & Charlie; and a lifetime of cherished friends.  She also shared a deep love for her cherished Ragdoll cats, Fino and Lulu, who brought her endless joy and companionship.

Wade Anthony Hannum, age 71, beloved father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on Thursday, February 6, 2025, surrounded by his family in Edgewater, MD. Born October 17, 1953 in Washington, DC to Evelyn and the late William "Les" Hannum, Wade lived most of his adult life in Arnold, MD before moving to Edgewater, later in life, to be close to his cherished four granddaughters and children.

He grew up in Berwyn Heights and later moved to Mitchellville, MD, where he was known as a vibrant and outgoing young man, playing the tuba and string bass and excelling in football at Parkdale High School. Wade cherished his time spent playing in the Redskins and University of Maryland marching bands. A dedicated worker, he spent many years at Xerox Corporation before transitioning to a civil service career with DISA and GSA, retiring in 2022.

Wade was a man who found joy in the simple things in life—boating, fishing, and traveling with his family. He loved spending time on the water in his family's company, especially with his four granddaughters, who were the light of his life. Wade found great happiness in his time spent in Islamorada and competing in triathlons, always eager to participate and enjoy life to its fullest. His infectious personality ensured he was never far from the center of any celebration.

Wade had a heart as big as his spirit. He always opened his home to both animals and people in need of a warm, welcoming place. Whether it was a stray pet or a friend needing support, Wade provided a safe haven filled with love and kindness.

A devout Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) member, Wade served as an elder at Christian Temple in Catonsville, MD, where his faith and service to others were a constant source of pride.

Wade is survived by Patti Powell Hannum and their children, Eric Hannum (Michelle) and Lindsay Hannum Feroli (Tom) all of Edgewater, MD; his four granddaughters, Hannah and Maggie Feroli, and Riley and Delaney Hannum; his mother, Evelyn Hannum of Mitchellville, MD; his brother, John Hannum of Rossville, GA and many nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss him dearly.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his sister, Leslie Hannum.

Charles M. Nash Jr., affectionately known as “Charlie,” passed away peacefully near his home in Sherwood Forest on February 6, 2025, at the age of 91.

Born on January 15, 1934, in Washington, DC, Charlie was the eldest son of Charles M. Nash Sr. and Doris Heaton. He was raised in Bethesda, Maryland, alongside his siblings, Patricia and Heaton. A family with deep roots in the Washington area, Charlie took great pride in his heritage, particularly the contributions of his grandfather, an architect who played a key role in the design of the National Cathedral. His upbringing was enriched by the spiritual community at St. Albans Church.

Charlie graduated from the Capital Page School in 1952. While living and attending school in Washington, DC, Charlie cherished the summers he spent in Annapolis, Maryland. His father began taking the family there when Charlie was a child, and the family eventually found their permanent summer home in Sherwood Forest in the 1940s. They later purchased a cottage on the Severn River in the early 1950s, and many years later, Charlie and his wife, Colette, renovated it into their dream home. This peaceful retreat became the place where he would retire and spend over 30 tranquil years with Colette. Surrounded by water and nature, he found joy in hosting family gatherings and savoring quiet moments on the deck.
An adventurer at heart, Charlie's passions for flying and sailing shaped much of his life. He earned his pilot’s license before obtaining his driver’s license, beginning his flying adventures at Lee Airport in Annapolis. He was particularly fond of flying along the Severn River, and his love for sailing matched his enthusiasm for the skies.

Charlie’s military service began with a ROTC Air Force scholarship to Gettysburg College, where he also played soccer and joined the Sigma Chi fraternity. Upon graduating in 1956 and completing his training, Charlie was stationed in Chaumont, France. He flew C-130s all over the world and met the love of his life, Colette Suzanne Mautuez, while stationed there. They married in 1959 in Marault, France, and soon started a family. They had their first two children, Chris in England and Michele in Dover, DE, while Charlie was still active in the Air Force. Tina and Steve followed a few years later, both born in Washington, DC.
After leaving active duty in 1964, Charlie transitioned to the Air Force Reserves and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1979. He was awarded an Air Force Commendation Medal for Merit.

Following his military career, Charlie took over the family business, Nash Floors, known for its wood flooring craftsmanship. Under his leadership, the business completed high-profile projects, including flooring work at the White House and historic Mount Vernon. Charlie was also active in the floor covering industry, serving as President of the Maryland Floor Covering Association. He worked alongside his children—Chris, Steve, and Tina—until the company closed in 2020.

A longtime member of the Rotary Club, Charlie served as President of the North Bethesda chapter, where his commitment to service and community shone through. Much later, he volunteered at Baltimore-Washington International (BWI) Airport, where, as a Pathfinder, he was known for helping complete strangers navigate the airport. His greatest joy was attending Welcome Home ceremonies for returning troops, greeting them with loud cheers, and offering warm welcomes to all travelers.

Charlie’s boundless curiosity and kindness made him a friend to all he met, and he was known for his genuine interest in others. In addition to his love of flying, sailing, and family, Charlie was marked by a quiet strength, loyalty, and deep devotion to home and country. His adventurous spirit, unwavering love for his family, and commitment to his community will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Charlie is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Colette; his sister, Patricia Lewers; his sister-in-law, Monique Chambers; his children: Chris and his wife Barbara, Michele, Tina and her husband Darren, and Steve and his wife Melissa; his nine grandchildren: Rob, Megan, Katy, Remy, Christian, Camden, Cole, Carson, and Hayden; and his great-grandchildren: Kaylee, Lily, Abbi, Thomas, Brayden, and James, all of whom lovingly referred to him as “Gramps.” He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Crownsville, Maryland, on February 21, 2025, at noon, followed by a reception at Stewart Hall in Sherwood Forest. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sherwood Forest Boys and Girls Camp, 134 Sherwood Forest Road, Sherwood Forest, MD 21405 in his memory.

Catherine Connelly, 97, of Cape St. Claire, Annapolis, MD, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2025, due to congestive heart failure, following a brief illness.

Born on July 18, 1927, in the City of Baltimore, Catherine spent her youth enjoying the country setting of Carroll County before settling in Cape St. Claire, where she resided for over 62 years. A devoted homemaker, Catherine found joy in the simple pleasures of life, dedicating her time and love to her family and community.

Catherine was a faithful member of St. Andrew's By the Bay Catholic Church and a past president and member of the ladies auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus. She had a passion for spending time with her grandchildren, boating (despite never learning how to swim), and crabbing. Known for her generosity, she knitted shawls and hats for charities and delighted in solving word searches. Catherine also enjoyed playing the organ and had a sweet spot for M&M's, often found tucked away around her home. Her favorite saying, "I will be okay," reflected her resilient spirit.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Kenneth Lee Connelly, Sr. and three of her sons, Kenneth Connelly Jr. (Trixie), Timothy Connelly (DeDe), and Edward Connelly (Dianne).

Catherine is survived by her sons, Robert Connelly (Deborah) of Winchendon, MA, and Daniel Connelly Sr. (Noreen) of Pasadena, MD and her daughters, Patricia Waller (Alvin) of Westchester, PA, Theresa Connelly (Patrick Lee) of Stevensville, MD, and Margaret Burkhart (Mark) of Pasadena, MD. Catherine leaves behind a legacy of love in her well over 50 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Friends are invited to celebrate Catherine’s life at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD on Thursday, February 13 from 4 to 7 pm. Stephen Barclay, 79, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, in Annapolis, Maryland on February 4, 2025.

Steve was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on September 27, 1945, to Emerson L. and Charlotte Beeson Barclay.  He grew up in Indiana and he enjoyed competitive swimming, family gatherings at Granny and Grandad’s farm and loved his dog, Blackie.  With the help of a mentor, he discovered his passion for science and got his first job at Eli Lily.  He graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana and was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity.

He went on to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he received his PhD.  While at the University of Wisconsin, he met his wife, Jamie Sanders, and they married in 1969.  They spent many summer evenings hanging out with friends at the Memorial Union Terrace, listening to live music and watching sailboats on the beautiful Lake Mendota.

From Madison they moved to Boston, where Steve did postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).  In 1976, their daughter, Erin, was born.  They enjoyed spending Sundays exploring the North Shore and Cape Cod beaches as a young family.

After three years at MIT, they moved to the Chicago area where Steve was an assistant professor in the Biological Sciences Department at the University of Illinois Chicago.  Steve launched his first lab of graduate students and relished exploring Chicago’s many museums and the Art Institute.

From Chicago, Steve returned to the University of Wisconsin-Madison and became a professor in the Bacteriology Department, where he did research and taught many future scientists, nurses and doctors. 

Over the course of their 29 years in Madison, Steve enjoyed family life, which included hosting lab parties for his graduate students, attending Erin’s swimming and rowing events, exploring the beaches and art galleries of Door County and building a fantastic collection of classical and Celtic CDs!

After retirement, Steve and Jamie moved to Annapolis to be near their daughter, Erin, and her family.  Steve treasured his time with his grandsons.  He delighted in all their interests and enjoyed mentoring and encouraging their creative and athletic passions.

In 2019, Steve and Jamie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Paris.  They marveled at the Impressionist masterpieces in the Musée d'Orsay, enjoyed viewing the historic landmarks and architecture from a riverboat on the Seine, and explored Sacre-Coeur and other beautiful churches.

They were married for 55 years.

Steve is survived by his wife, Jamie, daughter, Erin Curran (husband Matt), two beloved grandsons, Gus and Finn, along with mother-in-law, Betty Sanders, sister-in-law, Glenna Barclay, nephew, Chris Barclay, niece, Suanne Barclay, and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Mark.

Steve loved Indiana, genealogy, science, history, the arts, and his family, most of all.  He was patient, kind, curious, creative, optimistic, funny, loving, and loyal.  He was dearly loved by his family and will be missed greatly.  They cherished every moment they had with him.

The funeral for Steve will be on Thursday, February 13 at the Kalas Funeral Home in Edgewater, Maryland.  The visitation begins at 11:00 AM, followed by the funeral service at noon.  The burial will be at Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville, Maryland after the service.

Dawn Louise Kilheffer, 81, passed away on Monday evening, February 3, 2025, after a brief battle with cancer. She died at the home she shared with her husband William “Bill” Galebach in Edgewater, MD, holding her daughter’s hand and listening to choral classics. Born on March 6, 1943 in Washington, DC to the late Lewis Edgar and Clara Augusta Kilheffer (nee Papenfus), Dawn graduated from high school in Arlington VA and attended Radford University. She eventually ran off to NYC to start her amazing adventures and was in the City for the blackout of 1965. Returning to the DC-MD-VA area in the late 60’s, Dawn earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland while working full-time as a grants administrator at Prince George’s Community College and raising a family of 5 children. She worked into her 70’s, retiring from her position as an administrative manager in the Center for Imaging Science at Johns Hopkins University in 2015. Dawn loved music, poetry, animals, traveling, ice cream and spending time with family and friends. A member of her church choirs dating back to her early teen years and a member of the Annapolis Chorale since 1989, she knew the words to just about every song! Dawn was a member of the “Tiara Queens” Book Club and cherished those long-time friendships and the incredible trips they took together. She was drawn to the water and loved walking on the beach and boating. Dawn was a vibrant, caring, welcoming and eternally positive person who genuinely loved people and fellowship. She could light up any room and she made the world a better place. In addition to her parents, Dawn was preceded in death by her beloved son, Craig Ryan Billings and step-son, Brent Schulze. She is survived by her husband, Bill; her brother, Ed Kilheffer (Wendy); her daughter, Dawn-Marie Bey (Chris Cotropia); her stepchildren, Amy Crone (Tom), Sarah and Mark Schulze and her grandchildren, Oakley and Clara Cotropia, Caeden and Zoe Crone, Anah and Payton Billings and Tayjah Daquila. Friends are invited to celebrate Dawn’s life at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD on Wednesday, February 12 from 2 pm until her funeral service begins at 4 pm. Frances Young, age 86, originally from the state of Georgia, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2025. She enjoyed a long and fulfilling career with the United States Department of State, where she made a lasting impact through her dedication and service.

Francis was a devoted wife to Joseph R. Young and a loving mother to two daughters, Sherlyn and Michelle. She cherished her family deeply and leaves behind four granddaughters and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Beyond her professional and family life, Frances was known for her passion for world travel, her love for social gatherings, and the joy she found in singing in The Gospel Choir. Her vibrant spirit and generous heart touched all who knew her, leaving behind memories that will be treasured forever.

Her legacy of love, strength, and faith will continue to inspire those she held dear.

Andreas "Andy" John Savvides, 69, a resident of Severna Park, MD, and previously of Hollywood, FL, and Roseland, NJ, died at his home on Sunday, February 2, 2025. Born February 4, 1955, in East Orange, NJ, to the late John and Demetra Savvides, he received his bachelor of art degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, NJ. Andy was employed in Business and Restaurant Management, most recently working as a manager at Tommy’s Food Service and as a poker dealer at Horseshoe  Casino in Baltimore, MD. He was a longtime member of Ss. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Annapolis, MD. Andy enjoyed skiing and poker and was an avid sports fan. He is survived by his sons, John Savvides of Severna Park, MD and Simeon Savvides of Hollywood, FL; his siblings, Tommy Savvides of Ocean View, DE, and Lucy (George) Petros of Severna Park, MD and a loving extended family. James Kenyon Reece - known affectionately as 'Jim' by friends and family, and 'Jim Jim' by his grandchildren - passed away on February 2nd, just shy of his 89th birthday.

Born in Fort Dodge, IA in 1936, Jim spent his youth in the Midwest before finishing high school at Baltimore City College. After a stint at Gettysburg College exploring a future in ministry, he ditched a collar for a cockpit, entering the Naval Cadet aviator pipeline in September of 1956. Jim earned his wings of gold in 1958 and was commissioned a Marine second lieutenant before shipping off to VMA-223 in El Toro, CA.

After returning to Maryland in 1960, Jim entered the Marine Reserves and pinned on captain's bars while still flying with VMF-321 out of Andrews AFB. The noise of Jim's high-speed, low-altitude drill-weekend runs over early-1960s Severna Park was eclipsed only by his voice belting out the Marine Hymn for the last forty-five years at McGarvey's annual birthday celebration. In 2022, Jim held the distinct honor as the oldest Marine in attendance.

Jim's lanky physique made him a natural fit for the pole vault, and despite being a self-proclaimed "rock" in the pool, he was a competitive diver in high school. In fact, he was a waterman most of his life, and was happiest on a boat. But absent a boat or a friend with a boat, Jim would settle for a few weekly trips to the Annapolis Yacht Club, where he was a member for nearly 40 years. Live music sweetened the deal, as he and wife Nancy would often dance the night away while their youngest watched from a car seat perched in the corner. Jim was a consummate professional on the dance floor and his formal training was always on display.

After his time in the Corps, Jim's undeniable charm helped him cultivate a new career, following in his father's footsteps as a traveling salesman for Buster Brown Shoe Co. He and Nancy later opened three shoe stores in the area, but as the market changed, Jim found success in real estate development and home sales.

His innate desire to help others not only brought him success until health issues forced his retirement, but Jim's commitment to service manifested itself in more than just work. He served time on the board of Saint Martin's School in Annapolis, had fond memories of his time coaching his son Jeff's baseball team, was the driver behind Re/Max's Toys for Tots throughout Annapolis, and sponsored scores of midshipmen for over 30 years.

Jim was an undeniable extrovert and recharged through meet-ups with friends over lunch or drinks in downtown Annapolis. But even more than his affection for the wide group of friends he developed in over a half-century of Annapolis living, Jim cherished his four children and loved watching them mature. He would often call for a casual chat, even if just to leave a humorous voicemail, and took great pleasure in the adults each grew up to be.

As Jim grew older himself, he found joy in a new role: grandfather. Maintaining his youthful persona until the very end, he rejected the insinuation associated with "grandpa," preferring "Jim Jim" instead. And rarely could he be seen with a bigger grin than the radiating smile revealed while watching his grandkids' sporting events, school plays, and dance competitions.

Jim leaves behind his widow Nancy; children Jeff (Bonnie), Kimberly, and Jamie (Josh); five grandchildren; sister Suzi; and countless cousins, nieces, and nephews who adored him. He was predeceased by his parents, Glenn and Theresa Reece, brother Richard, sister Janet, and daughter Tebra. Bryan Lee Kowalczyk, lovingly known as “Big B” and “Pop-Pop,” passed away on January 31, 2025, in Richmond, VA, at the age of 70. Born on July 7, 1954, in Baltimore, MD, he was the beloved son of Ida and Leo Kowalczyk.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend, Bryan built his life around the people he loved. He was the steady foundation upon which his family stood—always ready with open arms, wise counsel, and a heart full of love. His presence at every milestone, big or small, was a testament to his deep and selfless commitment to those he held dear.

Bryan was the devoted husband of Joanne Kowalczyk (formerly Nolan) and the proud father of Tonya Kowalczyk, Deanna Kowalczyk (married to Matt Shufflebarger), and Melissa Kowalczyk (married to Daniel Clark). His greatest joy was being Pop-Pop to his cherished grandchildren, Nolan Erickson and Savannah Shufflebarger. He is also survived by his loving sister, Barbara Greenberg, and a lifetime of dear friends and extended family. He was preceded in death by his brother, Leo Kowalczyk.

Bryan was a man of unwavering integrity and authenticity. He had a rare gift for making everyone feel welcome—never treating anyone as an outsider and always finding a way to connect with those around him. He believed in treating people with respect and fairness, a quality that left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

His passions were simple but deeply meaningful: watching his daughters play basketball, taking his grandson to baseball games, and cheering on his beloved Baltimore Orioles. He loved classic cars, the Rolling Stones, and summers spent in Ocean City, MD, and Cape Hatteras, NC. Whether he was picking crabs, fixing cars, hanging in his treasured bar, or simply sharing a laugh with family and friends, Bryan made every moment count. Above all else, he loved his family unconditionally and took immense pride in being the best husband, father, and Pop-Pop.

Angel Pete Bounelis, 97, a lifelong resident of Annapolis, died of natural causes on Thursday, January 30 at his home.

Born on December 7, 1927 in Annapolis to the late Pete and Effie Bounelis, Angel graduated from Annapolis High School and served in the U.S. Navy. After being honorably discharged from the Navy as a Seaman 1st Class he worked at the Harbour House restaurant for many years. Angel was a proud Greek American and was a member of Ss. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church. In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandson.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Vasiliki Bounelis; his son, Pete (Michelle) Bounelis of Timonium, MD and his grandson, Gabriel Bounelis.

Lucy Frances Ott, 96, a five-year resident of Annapolis, MD, died at Heart Homes Assisted Living following a short illness. Born July 4, 1928, in Enfield, NC, to the late Ettie Sykes and Frank Vaughan, she worked as a school aide for the Board of Education. Lucy served her country in the U.S. Air Force. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Lucy also enjoyed cooking, going out to eat, and shopping. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Leo B. Ott, Jr. Lucy is survived by three children, David V. Ott of Washington, D.C., Paula (Tony) DiNenna of Annapolis, MD, and Alison (Jay) Lalla of Poolesville, MD; one sister, Joyce (Jimmy) Short of Enfield, NC; four grandchildren, AJ DiNenna of Annapolis, MD, Carina (Sarah) DiNenna of Annapolis, MD, Sarina (Michael) Habat of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Tyler (Mario) Lalla of St. Petersburg, FL; and one great-granddaughter, Kate Blaire Habat. A memorial service for Lucy is currently being planned for May 9, time to be determined. Virginia "Ginny" Gallihue Condon, 88, a 55-year resident of Reno, NV, died January 29, 2025, in Annapolis, MD.

Born April 30, 1936, in Bryn Mawr, PA, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in graphic design from the Moore College of Arts in Philadelphia, PA. Ginny was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority Alumni Association and enjoyed buying and selling antiques.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, John Gordon Condon.

Ginny is survived by two sons, Christopher Condon of Portland, OR, and Kevon Condon of Preston, MD; a granddaughter, Kayleigh Condon of Preston, MD; and a sister, Carrol Ann Gross of Granite Bay, CA.

She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Barbara and Danny hosted annual Labor Day cookouts, and those moments will forever live in our hearts. Barbara's kindness, generosity, and sparkling personality made her a cherished Wife, Aunt, and confidant. She touched the lives of all who knew her with her warmth and distinctive sense of style, creating a lasting impression that will never be forgotten.

Barbara is survived by her loving husband, Daniel McCubbin; brother-in-law Timothy McCubbin, wife Judy, and their son, Brian McCubbin; daughter Melissa Reagan (husband Thomas), and their children Josh and Brooke; brother-in-law Robert McCubbin, wife Suzie; daughter Stephanie Doherty (husband Andrew), and children Jaxon and Preston.

Terry "Sissy" Gheen
On Monday, January 27, 2025, Sissy Gheen, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many, passed away at the age of 61 at her home in Edgewater, Maryland.  She was born on April 9, 1963, in Washington, DC, to the late Mary and Fred Ruleman, Sr.  Sissy tragically lost her mother, Geraldine, when she was only 3 years old.

Sissy attended High School at Parkdale Senior High.  She married the love of her life, Dennis Gheen, in 1983 at 20 and 21.  From there, they grew their family with the addition of their children Sarah, Shaun, and Samantha.  Over the years, they enjoyed boating, camping, Nascar races, and hanging out with friends and family.

Sissy worked as a school bus driver assistant and helped children with special needs.  This warmed her soul and her loving nature.  She idolized these children and enjoyed spending her days helping others.  Love, kindness, and generosity were some of her amazing traits.   

Sissy is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Dennis Gheen; their loving children, Sarah (Doug) McIntire, Shaun Gheen, Samantha (Tony Spadaro) Gheen; her grandchildren, which she adored Mia Gheen, Aiden McIntire, Addison McIntire, Mason Spadaro, Madison Spadaro and Axel McIntire; her siblings Beverly Strunk, Bonnie Henderson, Jimmy Ruleman, David Ruleman, Bo Ruleman and Roger Ruleman.

She is preceded in death by her parents Geraldine, Mary, and Fred Ruleman, Sr, along with her siblings Patricia Edinger, Sherry Nelson, and Fred Ruleman, Jr.

With heavy hearts, we announce that on January 27, 2025 James Kevin Hughes, "Kevin or Kevie," passed away. He was born on February 26, 1958 to the late John "Jack" and Margaret "Margie" Hughes. Kevin was a proud DeMatha high school graduate and received a full-ride scholarship to Limestone College for basketball.  He loved sports and was a lifelong Commanders and Maryland Terps fan. Kevin loved coaching basketball, especially for his kids. He also loved lounging on the beach, listening to KC and the Sunshine Band, playing golf and spending time with his family and friends.

Kevin is survived by his wife, Tina; their four children, and their spouses, Amanda and John Chambers, Rebecca and Mariel Parrish, Patrick and Agostina Hughes and Steven Hughes; his three grandsons, Curry, Lucas and Teddy; his four siblings, Craig, Steve, Jackie and Scott, their spouses and many nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his loving sister-in-law, Carole Hughes. We will miss him forever, but we know he is happy with our Lord in Heaven.

Nancy McKenna (69) of Annapolis, MD passed away on January 26, 2025, after a four-year battle with ovarian cancer. Until the end, Nancy valiantly maintained her sense of humor, with a ready smile for her medical team and positive attitude for her family.

Nancy was born in Hartford, CT and then the family moved to Ithaca, NY, where she graduated from Ithaca High School in 1973. She went on to study early childhood development at Hillsdale College, graduating in 1977, then earning two master’s degrees in education from Elmira College and Mansfield University.

Early in her career, Nancy worked with special needs children at the Immaculate Conception School and the Mayers School in Ithaca. Later, she found a new calling at the Willard Drug Treatment Campus, where for 21 years she took pride in helping inmates get a second chance at education.

An avid underdog sports fan, Nancy was a loyal fan of the Knicks, Jets, and most of all the Mets. Nancy also followed the Olympics, tennis, golf, and horse racing. She enjoyed all music and regularly volunteered to sing and play autoharp for whichever Catholic church was in need but especially Willard where she enjoyed playing for the inmates.

Nancy’s happy place was Saugatuck, MI, where she vacationed every summer to see her grandparents, enjoy the dunes with her father, Raymond A. Van Houtte and her mother, Margaret Graves Van Houtte and later with her husband and son. Nancy especially loved a good sidewalk sale and a stroll along Oval Beach.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel McKenna; her son, Joseph McKenna; her daughter-in-law, Rachael Rockefeller; her brothers, Raymond C. Van Houtte of Annapolis, MD and Jonathan P. Van Houtte (Lisa) of Tucson AZ; her nephews, Jonathan F. Van Houtte (Crystal) of Baltimore, MD, Patrick Adams of College Park, MD and Kevin McKenna (Erin) of Newfield, NY and her niece, Crissy McKenna of Friendship, NY. 

Nancy will be interred in a small family ceremony on Thursday, February 6 at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery. A public memorial will be held on Friday, March 28 in Annapolis, MD. Eleanor “Ele” Francis Wright, 83, of Edgewater, MD and previously of Edgewater, FL, Decatur, TX and Bowie, MD passed away on January 26, 2025 due to congestive heart failure and a 7-month battle with lung cancer. Born on November 12, 1941 in New York City, NY to the late Anna Komar and Joseph Naklicki, Eleanor graduated from high school before establishing careers in various secretary positions in Washington, DC. She went on to retire from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing after an 11-year career. In her free time, she loved playing bingo, bowling, and video games. Known as Ele-Mom or the “Dog Whisperer,” she will always be remembered for her deep passion and remarkable ability to connect with every dog she met, no matter the place or time. Her home was always filled with the warmth of countless paw prints, a true testament to the love and care she gave to each furry friend. In addition to her parents, Eleanor was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 21 years, Frederick James Wright; her son, James Wright; her daughter, Tammy (Tony) Craighead; and her brother, James. She is survived by her daughters, Lisa (Craig) Chaney of MD, Liz Wright of MD, and Debbie (Russ) Martin of FL; her sister, Roseanna (Alan) Lackas of MD; and her grandchildren, Jimmy Wright, Matthew Trail, Justin (Jenn) Ramos, Jacob Ramos, Nicholas Libernini, Nicole Trail, Connie (Mike) Holland, and Megan Kwasinski; one great-granddaughter, Sophie Ramos. George E. Mattingly, Jr. a cherished husband, father, and esteemed mechanical engineer, passed away peacefully in Washington, D.C., January 25, 2025.

He was born August 9, 1938 in Washington, D.C., to George and Mabel Mattingly. A devout Catholic, George attended Blessed Sacrament and St. Anselm’s Abbey School. He completed his undergraduate degree in engineering at the University of Maryland and his doctorate at Princeton University. George spent his career at the National Bureau of Standards, now known as the National Institute of Science and Technology.

It was during his time as a Terrapin that George met Catherine Schulz, then an undergraduate at Trinity College in D.C. A few years later they met again in N.Y.C. when Catherine was an editor at Good Housekeeping Magazine, and luckily she forgave his assumption that she was a secretary. They were married for 56 years, and their marriage is a testament to the power of love, loyalty, and a wife’s ability to survive a husband’s multi-year obsession with marathon-running. (He would like it to be noted here that his PR was 2:52 in London. My mom would like it to be noted that she is rolling her eyes.)

George’s love of engineering and measurement extended into other parts of his life. He perfected the art of grilling steak over charcoal, played 8-ball and darts with merciless precision, and could eat hardshell crabs with unparalleled efficiency. No one remembers him ever conversing while eating crabs. He built his own road bike and clocked many miles along the C&amp;O Canal. In later years, George and Catherine (his stoker, whom he called “Stoke”) would ride their tandem, and tandemonium ensued. (My mom would like me not to mention the time they fell—bike and all—into the Reflecting Pool after my father misjudged the edge.)

George had a strong sense of integrity that guided him throughout. He showed up when it was important, he schlepped stuff when needed, and he could fix anything. He loved to figure things out, whether it was the daily word Jumble or the mystery of the pyramids. He was a Civil War buff who for a time loved to recite the Gettysburg Address from memory. He loved baseball, both playing it and watching it, especially the Nats. As his health began to fail in his final years, George discovered his artistic side, taking painting and drawing classes at Knollwood, his retirement home. Popular subjects of his work included cars, bikes, and tools. More than one sketch is titled “Get a grip.”

George is survived by his wife and two children, Virginia and Kate, known often as “the runner” and “the dancer” while growing up. He took immense pride in their accomplishments over the years, and this carried over to his grandkids, Leo and Sadie, who refer to their grandparents as Cack and Geo. The four of them spent many summers on Long Beach Island riding the waves, playing putt putt, winning junk at arcades, and trying to dunk Cack in the bay. Leo’s pursuit of chemical engineering at Pitt and Sadie’s prowess on the softball field made Geo very, very happy.

Everyone who remembers him is asked to celebrate his life in their own way. Raising a glass of their favorite drink—in George’s case a dry Bombay gin martini straight up with a twist—would be quite appropriate.

Laurence “Larry” O’Callaghan, Sr., 89, a 60-year resident of District Heights, MD died peacefully at his home on January 23, 2025. Born on November 17, 1935 in Washington, DC, Larry attended Gonzaga High School before graduating from Eastern High School. Larry served his country in the US Army Airborne Special Forces from 1954 to 1956. 

Larry began his career at PEPCO in 1957 as a Relay Tester. There he met the love of his life, Marlene. They married in 1959, started their life and welcomed 6 beautiful children into their family. 
 
He attended The George Washington University, receiving his BS in Electrical Engineering in 1967. He later attended Loyola College, receiving his MBA in 1981. He also attended the Public Utility Executive Program at the University of Michigan in 1978.

Larry enjoyed a 35-year career with PEPCO, retiring as the Director of Fuels in 1992. He later enjoyed a second career as a math teacher at St. Mary of the Assumption School where he taught for 10 years, and as a math teacher and bookstore manager at Bishop McNamara High School for 10 years.

Larry was a devout Catholic who dedicated years of service to Mt. Calvary Church and School. He had a passion for teaching math, mentoring the math team and tutoring students for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Holy Name Society, the Southern MD Rock and Mineral Club, and an All American Member of the 82nd Airborne Division Association. 

In his spare time, Larry enjoyed traveling with Marlene through the mountain states, especially Montana and Wyoming. He was also an avid collector.

Love, kindness, generosity, dedication, and community service were Larry’s hallmark traits. He loved his family without limit and enjoyed lifelong friendships. You could always count on him for a friendly greeting, warm smile and a witty joke.

Larry is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Marlene O’Callaghan; his loving children, Laurence (Sharon) O’Callaghan, Jr., Kathleen (Rich) Sidney, Mary Gessner, Eileen (Roger) Brown, Christine Mauser, and Margaret (Pete) Gahles; his grandchildren, David (Jenna) Sidney, Sean O’Callaghan, Nicholas (Katelyn) Gessner, Christopher (Megan) Gessner, Bryan (Casey) Mauser, David Mauser, Matthew Null, Timothy Null, Kevin Brown, Amanda (Jay) Robbins, Rachel Brown, and Sarah (Lukas) Goehring; and 6 great-grandchildren.
