Dawn Antoinette Barbella, age 61, of Annapolis, Maryland, passed away peacefully at her home Wednesday morning, September 17, 2025 surrounded by her family. She was born July 7, 1964, the youngest of three daughters, to the late Daniel and Antoinette Barbella. Dawn spent her childhood living in Kenilworth, New Jersey before moving to other parts of New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, Georgia and finally Maryland.

To know Dawn was to know that she had a lifelong love affair with her dogs. Since the age of eight and throughout her life there was always a dog, and for some time, two dogs by her side. They were her constant companions and she adored each and every one. Eos, her sheepadoodle, was her most recent “best friend”.  She stayed by Dawn’s side throughout her illness and remained the love of her life.

Dawn was adventurous and loved nature and being outdoors. Before her illness she enjoyed skiing, hiking and camping. One of her favorite adventures took her on a Canadian expedition to watch the polar bears frolicking on the ice. The walls of her home were adorned with polar bear pictures as evidence of her fondness for natural wildlife.

Those who knew Dawn will remember her infectious smile and sense of humor. She had a compassionate gift for succeeding in making others laugh and feel happy, which left a lasting impact on all who crossed her path. Her generosity toward others was unmatched. Dawn always wanted to show her appreciation in some way to those who were kind to her either in word or deed.  

It was in Georgia where Dawn’s generous spirit was most apparent. She moved there and remained there for seven years to help raise, nurture and care for her dear friend’s step granddaughters, Abbie and Rebecca. They lovingly called her “Mama Dawn”. Not having children of her own, Dawn always said that was the most rewarding time of her life. Dawn’s love for her girls never wavered even up to her dying day.

Finally, there are no words that can express how blessed and grateful we are to Dawn’s wonderful friends at Heritage Harbor as well as her co-workers at OMM and her dear friends from the dog park. Whether preparing meals for Dawn, walking Eos, taking her to doctor appointments, the countless friendly visits; these acts of kindness were all part of the outpouring of love for Dawn that remains unmatched and so very much appreciated.

Dawn was predeceased by her parents, Daniel and Antoinette (Faraone) and her nephew, Matthew Chmieleski. Dawn is survived by her two sisters , Denise Chmieleski and her husband Stephen, Donna Caravello and her husband Louis; her niece Michelle Margeotes and her husband Paul; her nephew Jeffrey Caravello and his wife Valentina; her great-nephew Dominick Margeotes; dear cousin Kathleen Kelly and her husband John and their son George; and finally, her beloved companion, her sheepaadoodle, Eos. Dawn will be sadly missed by a host of loving aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends. Dawn loved you all and considered all whom she loved “family”.

A Memorial Service is planned for Thursday, October 2, 2025 at 11:30 AM at St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church, 1600 Rahway Avenue, Westfield, NJ 07090.

Barbara Leola Schneider, 91, a 41-year resident of Arnold, MD, and formerly of Brownville, NY, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on September 17, 2025.

Born on September 12, 1934, to the late Charles and Madeline Slate, Barbara was one of six children. She graduated from Brownville-Glen Park Central School in 1951 and from the House of the Good Samaritan School of Nursing in 1955. She went on to enjoy a 45-year career as a registered nurse, retiring in 2000. After retirement, she continued her love of serving others by working at a local pharmacy and volunteering for many years at the hospital.

Barbara was a faithful member of St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Annapolis, MD, and an active member of the American Legion. She was also a dedicated New York Giants and Baltimore Orioles fan. She liked staying connected with family and friends through phone calls, Facebook and cards.Most of all, Barbara treasured time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were her greatest joy.

Barbara was preceded in death by her loving husband, Edwin H. Schneider, Jr., who passed away in 1977, and by three brothers, Frances, Bob, and Richard. 

She is survived by two sons, Gregory Schneider and Theodore (Laura) Schneider, both of Arnold, MD; two daughters, Vicky (Stuart) Timerman of Milton, DE, and Diane (Todd) Donaldson of Chesapeake Beach, MD; a brother, Donald of Florida; and a sister, Mary(Jim) Lowe of Virginia. She is also survived by four grandsons, Cole, Jordan, Mitch(Shanna) , and Shane(Emily); four granddaughters, Erin(Eric), Heather. (JR), Abby(Jim), and Emma; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and many dear friends from every part of her life.

Friends are invited to celebrate Barbara’s life with her family on Monday, September 22, from 1 p.m. until her funeral service begins at 3 p.m. at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD. Barbara will be laid to rest beside her husband, Edwin, at North Watertown Cemetery in Watertown, NY.

William John Marsden, Jr., December 1, 1939 – September 16, 2025

William John “Bill” Marsden, Jr., age 85, of Annapolis, Maryland, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2025. Born in Camden, New Jersey, on December 1, 1939, Bill was raised in Audubon, NJ, and later raised his own family in Haddon Township, NJ. He lived a life marked by hard work, devotion to family, and a deep love of community.

Bill spent his career as a skilled lithographer, taking pride in a craft that combined precision and creativity. Beyond his profession, he gave generously of his time as a volunteer firefighter. Dedicated to running into danger when others ran away, Bill answered the call of the fire bell at all hours of the night, rushing out to protect his community and then heading straight to his full-time job the next day. His courage, discipline, and sense of duty defined his service and earned the respect of all who knew him.

A lifelong sports fan, Bill cheered faithfully for Penn State football and the Philadelphia Eagles, celebrating victories and lamenting losses with equal passion. He loved the camaraderie of his Navy tailgate parties and could often be found on the golf course, fishing, or out on the water boating. His fascination with military history reflected his deep respect for service and tradition, and he cherished all things connected to the Navy and the armed forces. Bill also knew how to savor life’s simple pleasures
— he treasured a fine Scotch, a good cigar, and the quiet companionship of his beloved kitty, Tigger.

Above all, Bill treasured his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Joann Lillian (née Keller), his constant companion and love of his life. Together, they raised three children, Scott William (Heather), Brenda Delgado (Daniel), and Jeffrey Edward (Debra). Bill was the proud grandfather of Paul Vincent, Jason William, Matthew Anthony, Luke Edward, Lauren Elizabeth Mulcahy (née Marsden) (Tyler), Alexander William, and Caroline Emma, and the delighted great-grandfather of Aliza Jane. He is also survived by his three loving sisters, Sarah Jane Maruchello (Frank), Elizabeth Kerfoot (James), and Mary Gilmore (Frank). His presence, humor, and unwavering support will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Service Details: Visitation will be held on October 15, 2025, at 1:00 PM, with the service to follow at 2:00 PM, at Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 204 Wayne Avenue, Haddonfield, NJ 08033. The service will be held on what would have been Bill and Joann’s 65th wedding anniversary, a fitting day to honor their enduring love and lifelong partnership.

Michael Joseph Falencki
July 19, 1978 – September 16, 2025

Michael Joseph Falencki passed away on September 16, 2025, at the age of 47. A devoted husband, loving son and brother, and respected public servant, Michael lived a full life defined by intellect, dedication, and a quiet joy in the world around him.

Born on July 19, 1978, Michael grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina. He attended Saint Patrick’s Catholic School and Charlotte Catholic High School, where he distinguished himself as a scholar-athlete, excelling in the classroom and on the football field. His passion for the sport continued into college, where he played until an injury ended his playing career.

Michael was the first in his family to attend an Ivy League institution, earning his bachelor’s degree in History from Yale University. While there, he was a resident of Ezra Stiles College and enjoyed the camaraderie of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He went on to build an impressive career in public service and government affairs.

Michael began his career as a Legislative Assistant and later became Legislative Director and Deputy Chief of Staff to Representative Sam Graves (R–MO), where he helped shape meaningful policy through his trademark hard work, intelligence, integrity, and dedication.

He continued his work with Congressman Graves as Deputy Staff Director for the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. Between his time in the Congressman’s personal office and committee office, Michael served as Chief Operating Officer and Vice President of the Keelen Group, a Washington, D.C.–based government relations firm, and as Operations Director at Morgan Stanley.

At the time of his passing, Michael was a Principal at Cornerstone Government Affairs, one of the nation’s leading public affairs firms.

Beyond his professional life, Michael was a man of many pursuits. A diehard Philadelphia sports fan, he rooted for both the Eagles and the Phillies. Michael found peace in nature with his beloved wife, Celeste — especially birdwatching, where Michael loved to share his latest sightings with his mother, Barbara. Together, the couple traveled widely, with Europe serving as the backdrop for many of their favorite adventures. They made their home in Annapolis, Maryland, where they shared countless quiet moments — and many with their cats, Coco and Ruby — appreciating life’s simple pleasures.

Michael is survived by his wife, Celeste Millio, of Annapolis; his parents, Peter and Barbara Falencki, of Greenwich, Connecticut; his brother, Joseph Falencki, and sister-in-law, Jessica and their children, Annabelle, Emmalynn and Wesley, all of Greenwich, Connecticut; and his youngest brother, Matthew Falencki of Charlotte, North Carolina.  Michael is also survived by his in-laws, Lauren and Soren Harbom, of Annapolis.

Michael will be remembered for his quick wit and keen intellect, his warm smile and massive bear hugs, and his deep sense of duty — to his family, his friends, and his work. He moved through the world with humility, curiosity, and unwavering care for those around him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, October 17, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Neumann Church, 620 North Bestgate Road, Annapolis, Maryland 21401. All who knew and loved Michael are welcome to attend and celebrate his life. Internment will be private, limited to immediate family members.

Florence Helen “Flo” Gatto, 87, a resident of Brightview in Edgewater, MD and previously from Pawleys Island, SC, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2025.  She was born on February 18, 1938 in Jersey City, NJ to the late Albert and Florence Volk and was one of six children.  Flo married in 1956 and became a U.S. Navy wife.  She traveled and relocated extensively with her husband during his 21-year career including stations in England, France, Germany and Turkey while they raised their family.  Flo enjoyed exercising, sailing, collecting sharks’ teeth and simply walking the beach, often with her dog, Abbey, at her side.

In addition to her parents, Flo was preceded in death by her loving husband of 68 years, Joseph David Gatto who passed away in 2024; two brothers, Frank and Dominick Principe; and a sister Margaret Lauerman.  She is survived by her four children, Helen (Gerard) Brennan of Churchton, MD, David Gatto of Naples, Italy, Karen (Thomas) Klene of Kingwood, TX and Brenda (Joshua) Denmark of Colorado Springs, CO; one brother, Albert (Karen) Volk of Pittsgrove, NJ and sister, Carole Stabile of Vineland, NJ.  She is also survived by five grandsons, Christopher and Rory Brennan, Austin and Robert Humphreys, and Matthew Staney; and one granddaughter, Elizabeth (James) Brock.

Robert A. Wilson, “Bob,” 85, a 26-year resident of Edgewater and previously of College Park for 34 years, passed away at his home on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, surrounded by his family.

Bob was born on June 24, 1940, in Washington, DC to the late Thomas and Eleanor Wilson. He attended the University of Maryland where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering and he obtained his Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Catholic University.

Bob began his career at Boeing Company followed by a 31-year career with the Naval Surface Warfare Center at the David Taylor Model Basin in Carderock, MD, where he retired as Head of the Programs Department, Ship Systems & Programs Directorate.

He was a member of the American Society of Naval Engineers, and his hobbies included boating, fishing, spending time with his family, and mentoring future engineers.

In addition to his parents, Bob is preceded in death by his sister, Mary Ellen Yankowy.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Joan B. Wilson, his children, Thomas Wilson and his wife Theresa of Edgewater, MD and Karen Salehi and her husband Mack of Davidsonville, MD. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Colin Wilson and his wife Ashley (children Emersyn and Marshall), Corianne Wilson (child Waylon), Matthew Wilson, and Emily Salehi.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Bob’s life on Friday, September 19, 2025 from 5 to 7 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd. Edgewater, MD 21037, where a funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2025 at 11 AM. Interment will follow at Lakemont Memorial Gardens, Davidsonville, MD 21035.

Darlyne Rae Glinski of Edgewater, known as “Nanny” by her family, passed away on September 15th, 2025. She was 89. 

She was born on January 15th, 1936 in Grand Forks, North Dakota to the late Walter and Ruby Jackson. Growing up in the Grand Forks area, Darlyne graduated from Grand Forks Central High School.

She went on to become a Pharmacy Technician and worked for both Deaconess/United Hospital in Grand Forks, ND and then Olson Drug in Grand Forks, MN. Later on, she retired from Pharmacy and enjoyed her job as a cashier at the McDonalds in East Grand Forks, MN.

Things that Darlyne enjoyed were crossword puzzles and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

Darlyne is survived by her daughter Victoria Bolbecker of Edgewater, MD, grandchildren Roger Bolbecker of Cape St. Claire, MD, Kathryn Dewey of Jacksonville, FL, and Patricia Bolbecker of Shady Side, MD, sister Beverly Shuler of Grand Forks, ND, and five great grandchildren.

Rita Waters Alexander, of Stevensville, Maryland, passed away on September 14, 2025, at the age of 66, after a long and courageous battle with brain cancer. She was at peace and surrounded by love in her final moments.

Born on August 2, 1959, in Washington, D.C., Rita was the daughter of the late Iole Carmelina Smiroldo and Giuseppe Smiroldo. She was also preceded in death by her grandmother “Nonna” Maria Zizzo, grandfather “Nonno” Giuseppe Zizzo, and aunt “Zia” Concettina Santoro. 

She is survived by her husband, Robert Alexander; her children, Michelle Waters and Joseph Waters; and her stepdaughters, Roberta Alexander and Jody Alexander. Rita is also survived by her sister, Lucia Ferrante and husband Rick; her niece, Lexie Steele; her brother, Franco Smiroldo; and many cherished cousins: Lucia Santoro and daughter Giuliana, Pietro Santoro, Ricardo Santoro and wife Becky, Giovanni Santoro and wife Heather, along with all of their children and grandchildren. She leaves behind many other cousins and loved ones, including a large extended family in Sicily.

Rita dedicated her life to children, education and advocacy, earning an Associate’s in Liberal Arts, a Bachelor’s in Education, and a Master’s in Education. Her career as an educator spanned over 35 years in which her focus and passion was in special education. She retired from Wildlake High School in Columbia, MD. 

Rita and her husband lived in Ellicott City, MD for 14 years. Many happy memories were made visiting their home in Rehoboth Beach, DE with family over the years. They retired to Bethany Beach, DE to continue enjoying coastal life together. Before Rita’s passing, they moved to Stevensville to be closer to family.

Rita was a gentle soul and, although sometimes reserved, those closest to her deeply appreciated her genuine smile and unfiltered laugh. Quirky and exceptionally smart, she eagerly took any opportunity to teach or tutor family and friends. She had a lifelong passion for classic rock, which began as a young fan of The Beatles, The Who and The Rolling Stones. She also enjoyed trips to new places, valued spending time with family, was an avid reader, and found joy in cooking and gardening. Her warm heart spread love to so many through the years. She will be deeply missed by all who were lucky to know her.

Family and friends are invited to honor Rita's life on Monday, September 22 from 5 to 8 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, September 23, at 1:30 pm at Lakemont Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 900 W Central Ave, Davidsonville, MD. Following the burial, a Celebration of Life will be held at Killarney House, 584 W Central Ave. Davidsonville, MD from 2 to 5 PM.

Dr. Richard John Shaker, “Dick”, 83, a 26-year resident Annapolis, MD and previously of Columbia, MD, passed away on September 14th, 2025, at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family.

Dr. Shaker was born on February 24, 1942, in Quantico, Virginia to the late Master Sargent Richard and Lidia T. Shaker. He was a graduate of the University of Chicago, receiving his BS, MS and PhD in Mathematics.

Dr. Shaker founded Shaker Financial Services, pioneering the quantitative strategy of discount capture using closed-end funds. Prior to that, he was the Chief Mathematician at the National Security Agency (NSA) where he worked for 26 years. In 1970 and 1974, he won the Mathematics Society Award for best technical paper of the year. In 1980, the Director of the NSA presented him with the Cryptologic Literature Award in recognition of a “lifetime of work” citing 22 publications. In 1992, he received the Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Services as a member of the Senior Executive Service. Throughout his career, his favorite projects were those where he mentored younger mathematicians.

Dick loved spending time with family and friends. He was an avid bridge player, recently achieving Bronze Master status. His lifelong passion for theatre led him to his recent investments in two Broadway Musicals: The Band’s Visit and Buena Vista Social Club. He was a passionate local sports fan cheering for the Washington Commanders/Redskins, where he was a season ticket holder or over 50 years, the University of Maryland Terrapins men’s basketball and the Washington Nationals.

Dr. Shaker is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Roberta K. Shaker. He is also survived by son Richard J. Shaker, Jr. and daughter-in-law May of Forest Hills, New York; son Robert M. Shaker and daughter-in-law Shauna of Arlington, Virginia; daughter Kathryn S. Baummer and son-in-law Daniel of Arnold, Maryland; five grandchildren: Devon and Nigel Baummer, and Mia, Eleana and Audrey Shaker.

Barbara Joan Callender 1949-2025

Barbara “Joan “Callender, 76, of Edgewater, Maryland, died on September 13th, 2025.

She was born in 1949 in Annapolis, Maryland, to Thomas Collison III and Eleanor Collison(Leitch). Their only daughter of six children, her brothers- Thomas, Ronald, Gary, Larry, and Jeff Collison. She attended Annapolis High School. In 1972, she married Walter Wayne Callender, and they were married for 53 years. 

She worked for JF Johnson Lumber Company for 45 years and was Secretary of the Corporation, Corporate Accounting Specialist, and a shareholder. 

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Brothers- Thomas, Ronald, Gary, and Jeff Collison. She is survived by her husband, Walter Wayne Callender; son, George Wesley Callender, and his wife, Tammy Simmons-Callender; granddaughters, Megan and Victoria Callender; brother, Larry Collison; and nieces and nephews. 

A Celebration of Life will be held by the family on October 5th at Adams Tap House and Grille, Kent Island, 1-3 pm. Instead of flowers, the family asks for donations to the American Cancer Society as Joan bravely fought several types of cancer for over 30 years.

James Daniel “Danny” Chumley, 67, of Oxon Hill, MD, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 12, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on April 16, 1958 in Washington, DC, Danny was known throughout his life for his friendliness, his open heart, his giving nature, and his impeccable sense of humor.

Danny was the son of James C. (Jim) and Hazel W. Chumley, both who preceded him in death. He found his cherished, devoted partner in life with Patricia Ann (Pat) Chumley, who also preceded him in death.

From his union with Pat, Danny gained a son, Charles Roger (Chuck) Chumley. He is survived by Chuck and his wife Kimberly Ann, as well as his granddaughter Skylar Reese who just turned 25, and who he is so proud of. Shortly after graduating college, she opened her own business, Critter Cove in Harrisonburg, VA. Danny got a virtual tour of her place about a week before he went to Heaven. He is equally proud of his grandson Phoenix James who is 15 and a Sophomore in High School. Phoenix is active in the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) and he holds a Second Degree Black Belt in Karate.

Danny is also survived by his only sibling, his sister Terri Jane, and her husband Michael (Mike) Hicks. Terri will be 70 on her birthday and Danny quickly got tired of hearing her say ‘can you believe I’ll be 70 in December’. Terri and Mike gifted Danny with a nephew and a niece. David Talbert, his nephew, is 45 and he loves the demolition derby, both building the cars and driving in the derby. He has a son Steven James who will be 11 in February. Steven is in the 5th grade and is really doing well in school. Danny’s niece, Valerie Renee Hicks Marshall is 41 years old and is a Special Education teacher of 4 year-old autistic children. She is married to Thomas Marshall, Sr. who works in fire protection. They have 3 crazy sons, Thomas Jr. (TJ) who is 8, Michael Alexander (Mikey) who is 6, and James Christian who is 5. TJ enjoys school, and playing Minecraft and Roblox on his tablet with his cousins. Mikey and James enjoy competing in BMX bicycle racing.

Danny is also survived by his sister-in-law Linda Webb who was preceded in death by her husband Dennis Webb. Their son, Danny’s nephew, Brian Webb is married to Brittany and they have 2 sons, great-nephews Tyler, 10 and Jaxson, 4. He also has a great-niece Reagan Smith.

Danny has two aunts, and numerous first, second and third cousins, who he enjoyed spending time with whenever possible. And Danny has a bonus niece Gina Talbert and bonus great-nephews Roman, who just turned 17, and Colt who will be 11 in February.

Danny is a friend to everyone who meets him and has no enemies. He is a loyal friend and has a hysterical sense of humor, just like his dad. Many of the posts on his Face Book page included comments like Danny was such a good man, such a great man; Danny was a wonderful man; Danny was such a kind person, such an awesome person. He will be missed by all who knew him. The family will miss him like crazy, but on occasion we’ll miss the cooking skills he learned from his mother.

For nearly 50 years, Danny as well as many other family members have bowled in Duckpin Bowling Leagues. He was an officer in several leagues for many years. When his eyes got too bad for him to bowl, he remained a league secretary for the Hazel Chumley Seniors Memorial League.

Danny’s work career was in customer service in the printing industry. He made so many lifelong friends at his past places of employment, many who reached out or even visited him while he was in the hospital.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 19th 2025 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Saturday, September 20th 2025 at 10:00 AM at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory (6160 Oxon Hill Rd, Oxon Hill, MD 20745). A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 20th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the same location. Family and friends will then proceed to Resurrection Cemetery, 8000 Woodyard Road, Clinton, MD 20735 for burial, followed by the repast at Danny's house. Rhonda Ann Turley, 60, of Forestville, Maryland, died September 12, 2025 in Annapolis, Maryland. Born July 15, 1965, in Southern Maryland, to Joseph Hall and Letitia Heyduk. 

She is an alumna of Fredrick Douglass High School, where she graduated in 1983. 

Rhonda loved all things horses, especially the mini horses her mother raised at her home years ago. She was a big animal lover and a friend to all strays who crossed her path, showing them love and affection by feeding and caring for them in her free time.

Rhonda loved romance novels, soap operas, and anything related to true crime, but especially the TV shows Snapped and Law & Order. Of everything, Rhonda’s favorite thing in the world to do was talk to the people she loved most, whether it was on the phone, debriefing the latest General Hospital episode, or checking in on how her friends’ days were, Rhonda loved it all.

Rhonda is survived by her parents, Joseph Hall and Letitia Heyduk; her five children, Brandon Turley and his wife, Jenna, Jenna Simmons and her husband, William, Shannon Schwartz and her husband, Michael and Cara and Alyssa Turley as well as her five grandchildren, Daniel Turley, Andrew Turley, Tiffany Simmons, Matthew Simmons, and Connor Simmons.

She was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Daniel Turley.

Today, we reflect on the life of George W. Perry affectionately known as “Pap”, born in Newberry, South Carolina to Mildred Perry on December 15, 1942. He sadly transitioned on September 12, 2025. George was raised by his grandmother, Estelle Perry, after his mom passed when he was just 7 years old. Estelle raised George and his sisters until her passing. 

George sang in the junior choir at St. Matthews Baptist Church and attended bible study at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Newberry, SC. He was a member of a local baseball team as well. Once he finished school, he worked at the Pepsi Cola Plant.

Shortly after the passing of his grandmother Estelle, George relocated to Washington, DC where he started his legacy. He was employed by a power washing company to establish stability in a new city and once he was established his family joined. George then started his long journey of employment with Halle Enterprises in October 1976 and retired in July 2025. There he established long lasting friendships and community support. 

George loved having a good time with family and friends. One of his favorite past times was watching wrestling and football. He will forever be known for his hard work and strong will to provide for his family. His contagious smile and made-up nicknames for everyone will never be forgotten!

He is preceded in death by his wife Lillie Mae Ruff, mother Mildred Perry, Grandmother Estelle Perry, two sisters (Dorothy Ann and Mary Lou). He leaves to cherish in his memory, his sons Jimel and Sherman Ruff, daughter in laws Veronica Ruff and Kim Harrod, two granddaughters Taneika and Debbie Ruff, three grandsons Jimel Jr, Vincent, and Nathaniel Ruff, eight great-grandchildren; Ramoni, D’Cari, Ramiya, Carlos, Rameera, Cam’ryn, Chloee, and Elias, nieces Cathie, Shannon and Miranda, and host of other great nieces/ nephews, family, and friends.

The world dimmed a little on September 11, 2025, when Nancy Lee Catterton Parlett passed away peacefully in the early morning hours, surrounded by the friends she called family. She was 91.

Born at Annapolis Hospital on May 30, 1934, Nancy proudly described herself as a 10th-generation South County farm girl, raised on her parents’ tobacco farms in Harwood, Maryland. She was the beloved daughter of Herbert T. and Alverta W. Catterton, and sister of Herbert W. Catterton.

After graduating from Southern High School in 1952 and attending Fleet Business School shortly thereafter, she married the love of her life, Leonard “Buddy” H. Parlett, Jr. Buddy built their beloved Parvilla home, where they started their family and their story together.
Nancy was a young model in Washington, D.C., appearing in print and billboard ads for Woodward & Lothrop, Garfinkel’s, and other elegant department stores, frequently traveling to New York for bridal shows. A natural beauty, she became known as much for her sparkling wit and adventurous spirit as for her flawless style. “I’ll try anything once,” she often said — and she meant it.

She smoked (back in the day), she sipped, she laughed loudly, and she lived boldly. Nancy learned to fly her own plane, jumped out of airplanes for the thrill of it, and traveled the world. She was a skier, both snow and water, and once even set a local record by gliding confidently on a slalom ski from the South River in Edgewater all the way to Solomon’s Island. It took five hours.

Part of most summers were reserved for her beloved Ocean City, where she grew up going as a girl and never stopped loving — the salt air, the boardwalk, and the ocean always calling her back.

She and Buddy shared a love of aviation until tragedy struck eleven years into their marriage in 1964, when he was killed in a plane crash just three miles from home. Left a widow at 30, with a 9-month-old developmentally disabled daughter, Susie, in her arms, Nancy carried on with remarkable courage and grace.

She went to work in Buddy’s family business, Arundel Gas and Water Conditioning, dedicating herself fully until her retirement in 1994. She provided Susie with the best schools and support, always enriching her and making her the center of her world.
Her passions were on the golf course and in the garden. Nancy was a master gardener who transformed her Edgewater property into a lush paradise of crepe myrtles, dogwoods, and countless blooms. “It will never be finished. There’s always more to do,” she often said, a philosophy that reflected both her garden and her zest for life.
Nancy was the life of every party. Her smile lit up rooms, her laugh roared like music, and her generosity overflowed to everyone. She loved her golf rounds, her cocktails, her gardens, her time at the beach, and above all, the people she gathered around her. To know Nancy was to be swept into her semi-chaotic orbit of laughter, kindness, adventure, and style.

Through everything, she was always impeccably stylish and poised: coiffed hair, chic wardrobe, and the timeless grace of an “old-world grande dame.” 
Always current with the latest trends, she delighted in fashion as much in her 90s as she did in her modeling days. She was known to arrive perfectly put together, whether stepping onto the golf course, attending a party, or just enjoying a casual day. Shopping was one of her joys — she never missed an opportunity to browse a boutique or flip through a glossy catalog. To the very end, Nancy treated life as an occasion worth dressing for.

Nancy was predeceased by daughter, Susie, who passed away on July 2, 2017, and by her brother, Herbert, who died in 2023.  Though Nancy carried those losses in her heart, she was never without love, laughter, and chosen family.
 
She is survived by her beloved friend Mary Wadland, who was truly like a second daughter to her; her friends like family, Susan Engles, Maura Hulsey, Patti Miller, Theresa Marker, Ollie Miller, and Ann King; her amazing caregiver Lianna Echevernia, her goddaughter, Wendy Carr, along with Pam and Jill Carr; and a joyful tribe of nieces and nephews, too numerous to count. Closest to home, she leaves behind her loyal cat, Elsa — who claimed the spot by her side every night — and her grand dog, Teddy. 

Friends are invited to celebrate Nancy’s life on Friday, September 26 at 1 p.m. at Davidsonville United Methodist Church, 819 W Central Ave, Davidsonville. Interment to follow in the church cemetery. Friends and family are encouraged to celebrate her remarkable life by following her own instructions, which say it best: “Don’t cry and feel like you have to wear black. It’s a party. Celebrate! I lived a heck of a life!”

Lester Hawes Fowler, 94, of Lothian, Maryland, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025.

Lester proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps from 1951 - 1954 and as a Korean Combat Veteran from March 1953 - July 1953, a role that shaped his lifelong values of honor, courage, and commitment. He carried those qualities into every part of his life, whether with family, friends, or community.

Above all, Lester was a devoted family man. He shared 71 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Doris Jean Fowler, a partnership built on love, strength, and faith. Together they raised five children: Lester Charles Fowler II, Charlene Mathesius, Barbara Jackson, Eileen Tenney, and Jennifer Rutrough.

Lester was blessed with nine grandchildren — Lenny Mathesius, Alyssa Crawford, Ashley Baker, James Mathesius, Rachel Jackson, Rebecca Jackson, Michael Tenney, Lauren Tucker, and Brian Rutrough — each of whom brought joy and pride into his life. He also cherished his great-grandchildren, Greyson Tucker and Brody Baker, who will carry forward his memory with love.

Lester will be remembered for his quiet wisdom, gentle humor, and unwavering love for his family. He touched the lives of many and leaves behind a legacy of devotion, honor, and kindness that will live on through those who loved him.

A celebration of Lester’s life will be held with family at a future time, and he will be laid to rest with military honors at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery.

Howard C. Williams, Jr., 73, of Fort Washington, MD, passed away on September 10, 2025. He was born on December 22, 1951, in Sylvania, Georgia, to the late Howard C. Williams, Sr. and Blanche M. Williams (Braboy).

Howard spent his early years in Columbus, Ohio, alongside his older sister, Stephanie. During their youth, the family lived abroad in Medan, Indonesia, after their father accepted a position overseas. Howard and Stephanie attended the American School in Singapore before returning to the United States, where he went on to graduate from Central State University.

After moving to Washington, D.C., Howard married and later welcomed his son, Howard C. Williams, III (“Trey”).

Howard had a deep love for the outdoors and could often be found driving through the park, hunting, or fishing. At home, he found joy in watching westerns—his beloved “cowboys”—as well as nature programs. He was also a fan of football and especially enjoyed the music of Billy Ocean. The song “Caribbean Queen” never failed to lift his spirits.

He is survived by his mother, Blanche; his sister, Stephanie; his son, Trey; and a host of cousins and extended relatives. Howard will be remembered for his humor, his love of nature, and the quiet joys of life that he cherished deeply.

Our mother, Myrna Dianne Harmon Goodwin, passed away on September 8, 2025, in Solomons, Maryland.  She was 86 years old.  

The daughter of a successful ranching family in eastern Montana, Myrna never forgot where she came from.  Born in 1939, she was one of eleven children and the youngest daughter of William and Gladys Harmon.  After graduating from Bainville High School, she earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from Minot State University in North Dakota.  There she met her future husband Ralph Goodwin, an Air Force officer stationed at Minot Air Force Base.   Together, they raised four children while living in Illinois, New York, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and then Vienna, Virginia, where they lived for 30 years.  Along the way, Myrna was a troop leader for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, and directed the youth choir in several churches.  No one was surprised when she was featured as mom of the year in The Clemmons Courier in 1972.  Myrna and Ralph and the kids also traveled in their Winnebago camper to all 48 of the continental United States plus Canada and Mexico.  Myrna loved to sing and she loved to teach, no matter the subject.  She had a strong Christian faith, and was an active member of the church throughout her life.  

Myrna made friends easily, an important skill since she started all over again in Alabama after she lost her husband of 42 years in 2007.  Her laugh was big and contagious, and attracted both the outgoing and the shy.   She was forthright about her views and occasionally ruffled feathers, including the time she encouraged the school audience to stand for her chorus’s performance of Lift Every Voice, the black national anthem.  

The role she loved the most was being Grams to her many grandchildren.  At 83, she was still having sleepovers with her delighted youngest grandson, giggling and telling stories under the covers late into the night.  Myrna is survived by her four children: Brenda Dixon (Bud), Dan Goodwin (Kate), Ralph Goodwin III, John Goodwin (Tina); her grandchildren Michael, Colton, Ralphie IV, Jessica, Savannah, and Luke; her siblings Rita Booth and David Harmon; 43 nieces and nephews; and numerous friends.  She loved and was loved by them all.  Gifts in her memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the Southern Poverty Law Center.  



It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Martha Elizabeth Karandy, 64, of Annapolis, Maryland. She departed this life peacefully on September 7, 2025.

Martha was a beloved wife and devoted mother. She leaves behind her husband, Eric Karandy; her daughter, Bernadette and her husband, Peter Fulweiler and her son, Konrad Karandy. She was the adoring grandmother of Bernadette and Peter's children, Peter and Ronan. Martha is also survived by her parents, Jack and Kathleen Mitchell, as well as her brothers, George, Sean and Kevin Mitchell.

A lifelong educator, Martha dedicated many years to teaching at St. Mary’s Elementary School, where she shaped the lives of countless children. Later, she pursued a second career as a Navy Training Specialist at Naval District Washington, bringing the same dedication and warmth to all her colleagues and community. 

Martha had a vibrant and charismatic personality, and always loved to laugh. Known as "Gammie", she loved to spend time with her beloved grandsons. She filled the lives of her family and friends with immeasurable love, joy, and laughter. 

A Memorial Mass will be offered on Friday, September 12 at 10:30 am at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Patricia Heyward Mora, age 34, passed away on September 5, 2025. She was born on February 27, 1991, in San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic, and brought light, love, and strength into the lives of all who knew her.

Patricia was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a beloved daughter, sister, and friend. She found her greatest joy in her family, especially in raising her children. She was a proud and nurturing mother to her sons — Austin, Dominique, and soon-to-arrive Amari, whom she was joyfully awaiting. Patricia was an outstanding homemaker and took great pride in caring for her home and family.

She dreamed of becoming a hairstylist, with a special talent and passion for braiding hair. Her creativity and warmth shone through everything she did. One of her proudest personal accomplishments was gaining confidence as a driver — especially when it came to chauffeuring her boys to where they needed to be, always with love.

Patricia is survived by her devoted husband, Davien; her sons, Austin, Dominique, and Amari; her loving mother, Cornelia; her sister, Paola; and her brothers, Pascual and Sandy.
