Carol Chaney Holt was born on February 12, 1938, in Washington, D.C., to the late James H. (Jimmy) Holt Jr. and the late Irene Fletcher Holt. She was the third of four children. Because she and her paternal grandfather shared a birthday, he gave her his mother’s maiden name, Chaney. They shared a close relationship until his death. To her family, she became known as Chaney.

Carol was born at the old Freedman’s Hospital in Washington, D.C., but was raised in Maryland. Once she left the hospital, the family settled in the home of Grandma Christine Perry Fletcher in Prince George’s County, Maryland. There, she joined her sisters Agnes (Tiny) and Geraldine. Two brothers, James III and Forrest, joined the family within the next four years. They had to wait a few years for brother Bruce to complete the family. Carol began her school life at St. Mary’s School in Upper Marlboro, MD. At the age of eight, the family moved to Anne Arundel County, where she attended Bayard Elementary School. She then attended Wiley H. Bates High School in Annapolis, graduating in 1955.

With teachers on both sides of the family, her desire to teach was born. She enrolled at Bowie State College and earned her B.S. degree in 1959. She began her teaching career at Adams Park Elementary in Annapolis, where she met African-American Supervisor Ms. Sarah V. Jones, who helped prepare her for some of the challenges she would encounter in her teaching career. She loved working with the children there and made many new and lifelong friends. She was transferred to Carrie Weedon Elementary in Galesville in 1966. She later moved to Belle Grove Elementary in Brooklyn Park, Maryland, where she remained for 27 years until her retirement in 1996. She taught mainly grades 1–4. During those years, Carol attended Morgan State University, where she earned her Master of Science degree. She touched the lives of over one thousand children and was highly respected by principals, students, and parents. She was especially delighted when former students returned as parents and shared memories of their time in her class.

In 1982, Chaney became a homeowner and moved to Dukeland Street. At the same time, she became a member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church. Carol was active with the Adult Committee of the Boy Scout Troop, worked in the soup kitchen for many years, helped with the Social Life Committee, served as Treasurer and Secretary to the Ushers, then as Secretary to the Parish Council, and later worked as a counter on the Finance Committee.

Chaney enjoyed traveling across the country to at least 40 states. She was an avid reader, loved to bowl and shop, and had an extensive record collection that she spent much time enjoying. Additionally, she helped care for her father and mother and, later, her sister Geraldine.

Chaney loved family. She cherished gatherings under the big tree in her mother’s yard. She took great joy in her growing family and loved the title “Aunt Chaney.”

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, James and Irene Holt; her siblings, Agnes Fletcher, Geraldine Smith, James Holt (Shirley), Forrest Holt, Sr., and Bruce Holt (Helen); and her niece, Angela Fletcher Hall.

She leaves a legacy of love to her aunt, Matilda Fletcher; sisters-in-law, Shirley Holt and Mary Holt; nieces and nephews; and great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Carol’s life on June 18, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD, where her memorial service will be held on Friday, June 19, at 10 a.m.

<center><p>Joshua John-Edward Martinelli</p><p>Captain USMC - Vietnam
December 26, 1943 – May 31, 2026</p></center>

Josh Martinelli, 82, of Annapolis, Maryland, passed away on May 31, 2026, at Hospice of the Chesapeake in Severna Park, Maryland.

Josh mentored countless Midshipmen at the United States Naval Academy for more than two decades in Young Life clubs and the weekly Taverns. The tavern concept came from Chuck Swindoll who wrote “Lessons from a Tavern” after a Marine Corps buddy told him, “The only thing I still miss is that old fellowship I used to have with all the guys down at the tavern…I no longer have a place to admit my faults and talk about my battles.”

Josh took Swindoll’s tavern lessons to heart, implementing them with the USNA athletic teams. Taverns are a safe place to be known and not judged, and in the Tavern, everybody gets a chance to tell their story. Here is Josh’s story.

Joshua was not his birth name. His given name was John Edward Martinelli, born on December 26, 1943, at 12:30 a.m. in Chicago, Illinois, to Albert and Sylvia (née Zabka) Martinelli. This was war time – when daylight savings was observed year-round. Josh loved to talk about how his dad told him he shared a birthday with Jesus!

Josh grew up on the south side of Chicago in the historic neighborhood of Pullman where the Martinelli family were neighbors of the famous Pullman factory. The middle of three brothers, Josh was part of a large extended family with over fifty first cousins; his father was one of nine siblings and his mother one of twelve. He was a talented clarinetist and baseball player back in the day.

Josh graduated from Fenger High School in 1961 and received his Bachelor of Arts in Actuarial Science from Northwestern University in 1965. During his Northwestern years, Josh accepted Jesus at a Billy Graham Crusade at Chicago’s McCormick Place in 1962. It was the start of a great adventure for him.

Josh joined Young Life ministry after graduating from college, and his first assignment was Minneapolis, Minnesota. There he was confronted with the difficult questions of the Vietnam War. Although he was exempt from the draft with a minister’s deferment, he felt conflicted and unprepared to give advice to the young people he served. Josh decided to give up his deferment and join the Marines.

Josh served our country from 1968 to 1971 as an artillery officer, and on July 1, 1972, he was appointed a Captain of the United States Marine Corps. His military records tell the story of an outstanding Marine who rose through the ranks. Josh received several medals and repeated high praise from his commanders, but he never talked about that. He did, however, share a story from his Vietnam years that solidified his life trajectory: when a young, enlisted man in a foxhole confessed to him, “Sir, I’m afraid to die,” Josh determined to devote his life to ministry because no one should be afraid to die.

Josh returned from the war to do just that and accepted the position as Young Life Area Director in Norman, Oklahoma where he led Young Life Clubs at various high schools in the Norman school district.

In the spring and summer of 1974 while visiting Europe, Josh spent time at L’Abri Fellowship retreat in Switzerland – another highlight that would shape his life. Francis Schaeffer himself baptized him. It was then and there that John Edward took his baptismal name of “Joshua” as his new name. From then on, he went by Josh.

Continuing his ministry in Norman, Oklahoma, and seeing the challenges so many kids faced in their homes, Josh felt called to family counseling. He started by taking a few courses at the University of Oklahoma, where he played fullback on the rugby team. With an education in mathematics, he needed a different degree to reach his new goal.

While on a ski trip, new friends (he never met a stranger) recommended Memphis State University to him. There, he took undergraduate and graduate courses in clinical psychology. And from Memphis it was on to California where Josh received his advanced degree at Fuller Seminary. “ABD” he liked to say…all but dissertation.

Josh grew a practice in San Fransisco and, later, Seattle, and then came the opportunity at the United States Naval Academy. He started as an Adjunct Professor of Leadership, Ethics, and Law, but soon devoted all his attention to Taverns and Young Life clubs. Thousands of Midshipmen have attended over the years, and his ministry partners continue to invest in the lives of the Mids.

Those who participated in his Young Life clubs knew a favorite saying of his: The Gospel is the only story where the hero dies for the villain. And one of the ways the teams shared with each other were his 5 “H’s”: History, Highlights, Heroes, Heartaches, and Hopes. If Josh were to answer his own question, who are your heroes? Jesus would be at the top of his list. And if he were to answer the question, what is your hope? Josh would say to be with Jesus.

He never married, but the Midshipmen he mentored throughout the years were the children of his heart. He truly loved them, and they loved him back.

Although Josh never played rugby for Navy, in 2021, Josh was inducted into the Navy Rugby Hall of Fame in recognition of what Tavern meant to the team.

In addition to his ministry at USNA, Josh was a member of Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Annapolis where he also served as an elder. Whether in church leadership or on the yard, his focus was always outreach.

Besides the many Midshipmen, USNA alumni, and friends that are part of his broader family, Josh is survived by an older brother, Allan, and a younger brother, Ken (Sherri); nieces Cambria (Jon) and Danielle (Jeff); nephew Scott (Karen); great-nieces Ada, Evie, and Venessa; and great-nephews Waldon, Griffen, and Lucas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Sylvia.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at 1400 (that’s 2:00 p.m. to you civilians), at the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Annapolis, 710 Ridgely Ave, Annapolis, Maryland 21401. After the service, we will have a Tavern … with Josh in the open seat this time! Please come prepared to share stories, something he taught you, or a way he shaped your life.

Josh will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery; date to be determined.
It was Josh’s desire for Taverns to continue beyond his life. In lieu of flowers and in honor of his legacy, donations toward USNA Taverns can be made by visiting the link <a href="https://newhorizonsfoundation.com/project/single-project/2129">HERE</a>.

After being married and living for a short time in Wisconsin, John was sent by his company to the Baltimore area. While there, Corby was active first in the Church of the Nativity in Timonium and then at Christ’s Church Baltimore. She began her nursing career as a surgical nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Towson and, when she and John relocated to Annapolis in 1979, she moved to the OR at Anne Arundel General Hospital in 1980. When she and John joined St. Anne’s in Annapolis after their Baltimore parish closed, she began to feel a call to ordained ministry. As part of her exploration of this call, she completed a Master’s degree in Theology at St. Mary’s Ecumenical Institute. However, the call itself was a few years ahead. She was active at St. Anne’s in many ministry areas, including service on the Vestry, with liturgy, as a lector and in the choir, just to name a few.

After a brief break in 2000 to explore the sailing life, Corby returned to her work as a nurse at Anne Arundel Medical Center, where she was known for running a very organized and well-run surgery. During those years, she was invited by St. Anne’s rector at the time to again explore ordained ministry and was accepted for postulancy by the Diocese of Maryland in April 2014. She was ordained a Vocational Deacon in 2017. She served at St. Andrew’s in Pasadena, St. Philip’s Church in Annapolis and again at St. Anne’s after retiring.

Corby’s other great love was music. She was a long-time member of the St. Anne’s choir and, as a member for many years of the Annapolis Chorale (now part of Live Arts Maryland) she sang the classics and had small roles in several Broadway shows. She expanded her repertoire when she sang with Live Arts’ women’s ensemble Cantori, singing pop standards as well as classical pieces. Music wasn’t just an enjoyable hobby for Corby, it was a way of “praying twice,” as the saying goes.

Whether assisting at the church’s altar, proclaiming the Gospel, or caring for those entrusted to her, Corby carried herself with both pastoral gentleness and remarkable competence.

Corby is survived by her brother, Kim Corbin of North Carolina, as well as many dear friends and colleagues.

Friends are invited to celebrate Corby's life on Tuesday, July 21 at 6 pm at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, on Church Circle in Annapolis, MD 21401. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Anne’s Episcopal Church in Annapolis (<a href="https://www.stannes-annapolis.org/donate">online here</a>) or Live Arts Maryland in Annapolis (<a href="https://liveartsmaryland.app.neoncrm.com/forms/annual-giving">online here</a>).

Timothy A Bowen was born in Washington, DC and raised in Colmar Manor, Maryland. He was a Boy Scout and played little league baseball. He was a member of the Army national guard in Washington, DC before joining the Prince George’s County Police Department. He was an avid ham radio operator from the age of 12. He worked all countries and entities after decades spent in the radio shack. His call sign was K3DPT with more information <a href="https://k3dpt.org/">here.</a>

Tim met his wife, Sally, who was the love of his life while she was a student at the University of Maryland. They married in 1973 and enjoyed doing things together from skiing and flying to their enduring love of sailing on the Chesapeake Bay. They were longtime members of the South River Sailing Association, running Thursday night races for many years.

Tim retired from the Princes George’s County Police department as a Sargent serving on the SWAT team and the Special Operation Division. He was well loved by his officers and his motto was, ‘Everyone goes home today.’ Tim served with honor and distinction and was awarded for Valor and Merit several times. He kept in touch with his fellow officers over the years and was always ready to listen to a friend. Tim always said of Sally, ‘Best police wife ever.’

Sally says Tim became a police officer because of his desire to help people in need. He was always available to help friends and family with any project that came along. In telling many of his stories about his life in the police force he would have a tear in his eye about some of the people he encountered, especially children who were in difficult circumstances.

After retirement, Tim got to drive Sally all over the state of Maryland, helping with water samples protecting the bay.

Tim and Sally collaborated on home and yard projects and especially feeding all the wildlife around their home. They made friends of deer, ducks, all the birds, foxes and raccoons. They dearly loved their dog and cat friends.

Sally describes Tim as “the wonder of my life”. In more recent days they have enjoyed sitting on the patio holding hands and listening to the oldies.

They never did resolve whose turn it was to “turn the log” while sitting by the fireplace but both loved sitting by a warm fire on a cold winter’s night with a cat in each of their laps.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 13 at 10 AM at Fort Lincoln Cemetery, 3401 Bladensburg Rd, Brentwood, MD 20722. A reception will follow at 11 AM Adams Taphouse and Grille, 169 Mayo Road Edgewater, MD 21037.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Tim's honor to <a href="https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/AACSPCA">The SPCA of Anne Arundel County</a> or to any charity of your choice.

Matilde Garzon Antonio, fondly known as “Mat” and “Casing” to family and friends, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2026, at the age of 82, surrounded by the love of family and friends.

Born in Echague, Isabela, Philippines to Vincente and Feliciana Garzon, she lived a life rooted in faith, family, kindness, and generosity.

Matilde attended Centro Escolar University Philippines and graduated with a degree in Pharmacy. In July 1967, she married the love of her life, Celso Antonio, with whom she shared a devoted and enduring marriage. Together, they raised three wonderful children: Christine, Edgard and Lenore. Throughout the years, she faithfully supported her husband during his service in the U.S. Navy while also pursuing a rewarding career as a senior laboratory technologist at The George Washington University Hospital, where she served with dedication and commitment for 33 years until her retirement in 2004.

An active member of the Filipino community, Matilde devoted herself to serving others through the Ilocano Society of America (ISA) and the Medical Mission of Mercy. Joining the Mission in 2012 alongside her husband, Celso, she later served on its board of directors and coordinated mission trips to her hometown of Echague, sharing her warmth, generosity, and joyful spirit with all whose lives she touched.

Together, she and her husband enjoyed traveling, visiting loved ones, and playing Filipino mahjong several times a week with their close friends. Their home was often filled with laughter, lively conversation, and the familiar sound of mahjong tiles being shuffled late into the evening. After the passing of her cherished husband in 2020, she continued to find joy and companionship in the game and in the many treasured friendships built around the mahjong table.

She is survived by her daughter Christine and her husband Dwayne; son Edgard and his wife Rose; daughter Lenore and her husband Allan; and grandsons Courtney, Ray, Matthew, Andrew, and Evan. She is also survived by her younger brother, Celis, and his wife, Nida; as well as her late brother’s wife, Monet Garzon. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, godchildren, relatives, and friends here in the United States and back home in the Philippines.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Celso; her loving parents, Vicente and Feliciana Garzon; and her dear brother, Justino “Tinong” Garzon. We find comfort in knowing they are reunited in God’s eternal embrace.

Sally Frances Scribner died peacefully at her home in Annapolis on May 18, 2026, at the age of 89. A Baltimore native, Sally was the daughter of Charles O. and Ruth L. Mount. Her father was a respected attorney, and both parents were active in the region's cultural, civic, and social circles. In her youth, she rode Horses at a club in Elkridge, MD. "Horses Come First," Sally used to say; she admired them her entire life.

Sally graduated in 1954 from Baltimore's elite Western High, the oldest all-girls high school in the nation and celebrated for its academic rigor. Even in high school, Sally was a human dynamo. She was a member of the Ninety Club, Our Pets Club, Olympian Club, and Science Club and played badminton, softball, and basketball. At Goucher College (then a similarly elite all-women's college), Sally earned a degree in chemistry in 1957. At that time, women were largely discouraged from pursuing careers in the so-called "hard" sciences, so this was a significant achievement.

While working as a spectroscopist at the U.S. Customs Laboratory in Baltimore, she met Bourdon F. Scribner. They married in 1963 and settled in Washington, D.C. Bourdon was a noted chemist and spectroscopist, a long-time rail enthusiast, an avid power boater long active in the Potomac River Power Squadron, and a George Washington University Alumnus. With their joint love for chemistry in mind, Bourdon and Sally eventually established the Bourdon F. Scribner Graduate Student Scholarship in Chemistry at George Washington University. Bourdon passed away in 2007.

A member of the Washington, D.C. Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society (DCNRHS) for nearly four decades, Sally volunteered in a wide variety of capacities with skill, good humor, and the ability to get things done. Sally was a force on DCNRHS’ Trip Committee; in the 1990s she led a very popular series of inexpensive two-day weekend motor coach tours to tourist railroads and rail historical sites in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. Sally also served on DCNRHS’ Board of Directors as a Member-at-Large for a number of years.

Sally was at the heart of the crew (aka DOVER HARBOR Gang) of DCNRHS's 1923 Pullman sleeper-lounge-buffet passenger car DOVER HARBOR (doverharbor.com) from the 1980s into the 2000s. Sally used her chemistry background to make her famous lye vats, which helped strip much of the paint off the brass aboard DOVER HARBOR during its early restoration. She served as DOVER HARBOR’s On-board Services Chief for about 15 years; for about 10 years starting in 1993 as Charter Agent and later Railroad Liaison; and frequently as a Chef or Steward on trips and charters. Many of the practices she put in place as Chief of On-board Services remain part of how DCNRHS does on-board service aboard DOVER HARBOR today! Her favorite trips, according to friend Barbara, were the New Year's in New York getaways. Very supportive of the DOVER HARBOR program, when there was a need for resources, people or otherwise, Sally (and Bourdon) frequently, but always without fanfare, stepped up to help fill the void.

Sally cheered enthusiastically for the Navy Football and Orioles Baseball teams. Sally was passionate about the environment and conservation. She also enjoyed many great adventures "all over the place" with her best friend and college pal from Goucher, Connie Catania. In the evening, Sally enjoyed a good, blended scotch whiskey to unwind.

Sally and Bourdon owned and operated, for many years, a pleasure craft complete with a galley and sleeping quarters, just like a Pullman car. They enjoyed both overnight and weekend excursion adventures on Chesapeake Bay. Much of what they learned about catering, cooking, berthing, and entertaining in small mobile spaces Sally later applied as lessons learned for DOVER HARBOR operations.

In 1974, Sally and Bourdon settled into a beautiful home in Edgewater with an incredible double fireplace and tree-lined lot where they lived for many years. Bourdon had an exquisite model train layout in the basement, and Sally enjoyed the screened-in porch. Sally also enjoyed the friendship of dear neighbors Jack and Sylvia, who, along with railroad friend Jim, were very supportive in the last years of her life.

Sally will be interred together with Bourdon at Cedar Hill Cemetery, 4111 Pennsylvania Ave., Suitland, MD 20746 on July 24, 2026 at 2:00 PM ET. The simple graveside service will be open to the public. Please meet at the Cemetery Offices.

A party to celebrate Sally’s life will be held at a later time. If you are interested in attending, please send an e-mail to <a href="mailto:sfs@dcnrhs.org?subject=RSVP for celebration of Sally Frances Scribner">sfs@dcnrhs.org</a>.
