Robert J. â€œBobâ€ Calhan, 92, a 6-year resident of Ginger Cove in Annapolis, MD and previously of Clinton, MD for over 20 years, died on Friday, December 4, 2009 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD. 


Born September 25, 1917 in Estherville, Iowa, where he was raised. He graduated from Estherville Junior College in Iowa. He entered the Army Air Corps in July 1940 and flew B-25's during WWII in the African Campaign. After retiring from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel., he worked as an Operations Manager for the Andrews Federal Credit Union at Andrews Air Force Base and in Wiesbaden, Germany. During his military career he was stationed in Utah, Maryland, Japan and Newfoundland. Mr. Calhan received the Air Force Commendation Medal twice, Air Medal, and National Defense Service Medal w/ Bronze Service Star. 


Bob was a member of the Lions Club in Clinton, the Ginger Cove Men's Group and a parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church. He enjoyed flying, golf, reading, travelling, and spending time with his family. 


Bob was preceded in death by his wife, of 67 years, Margaret A. Calhan, who died in July 2009. He is survived by his children, Michele L. Groot of St. Leonard, MD, Robert J. Calhan, II, of Annapolis, MD, Cecelia L. Atkinson of Kingwood, TX, Kathleen M. McSorley of Huntingtown, MD and John H. Calhan of Owings, MD; father-in-law of Mary Jo and Barbara Calhan, Michael G. McSorley and the late Paul C. Groot and Craig Atkinson. Brother of Leo Calhan of Chicago, IL , Jim Calhan of Lakewood, CA, and the late Michael Calhan, Frances Murphy and Bernadine Furhman. Also survived by 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Elmer Charles Kellenbenz




Elmer Charles Kellenbenz, a 30 year resident of Manning, South Carolina and previously of Annapolis, MD, died on December 1, 2009 at his son's residence in Bishopville, SC. Elmer was 87.




Born May 20, 1922 in Baltimore, MD, to the late Elmer and Lucinda Kellenbenz, he was a graduate of Annapolis High School and served his country during WWII in the United States Army. He was employed by Economy Plumbing and Heating Supply.



Elmer was a member of Santee Baptist Church in Manning, S.C. and enjoyed fishing and camping.




He is survived by his wife Nina Kellenbenz of Summerton, S.C., whom he married April 25, 1947, his sons Dennis and his wife Linda Kellenbenz of Bishopville, SC and Donald Glenn and his wife Jane Kellenbenz of Annapolis, MD and one sister, Gloria Donaldson of Harwood, MD. He was predeceased by his siblings Melvin Kellenbenz and Bertha Crutchley. Also survived by 8 grandchildren and 1 great grand-daughter.

On Saturday, November 28, 2009, at approximately 11:30am, God called his child Michael Vernon Halman home. Michael was born in the United States Army Hospital, Asmara in Asmara Ethiopia, on Thursday April 19, 1973. He was the second of two children raised by James V. and Willine D. Halman of Fort Washington, Maryland. Michael spent his formative years with his parents in various cities in the United States and extended stays oversea at U.S. Naval Bases in Panama, Canal Zone and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba before returning to the United States in 1982. Michael attended Tayac Elementary School, Lord Baltimore Middle School and graduated in 1991 from Friendly High School. He was very activie in school participating in the Drama Club, singing in the Friendly High School and All-County chorus. Post high school, Michael graduated from the Alliance Tractor Trailer Training Center where he received his CDL certification which authorized him to drive local and long-haul 18-wheel tractor-trailers. But Michael chose his first love instead by becoming an employee of the Prince George's County Board of Education as a Bus Driver. He was a friendly, outgoing and helpful person who thoroughly enjoyed his job and the interactions he had with the students that rode his bus and his fellow bus drivers. He continued in this employment until he became disabled due to chronic kidney failure in 2003. Michael leave to cherish his memories his mother and father, a sister Dondrea M. Bethea and her husband William of Waldorf, Maryland; a nephew Gregory C. Pulley, Jr. of Waldorf, Maryland, five Uncles and their wives; six Aunts and their husbands, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Ellen Sue Miller died on Friday, November 27, 2009 at the Hospice of the Chesapeake's Mandrin House in Harwood, Maryland, after a battle with breast cancer. Ms. Miller was born on September 15, 1950 to Gladyce and Sol Hartenstein in Brooklyn, NY. She was raised in Valley Stream, NY and attended Central High School. She later received her B.S. from University of Connecticut and her Masters degree in Textile Chemistry from University of Maryland. She started Clipper Carpet Cleaning in 1978 with her former spouse, Wally Miller. She owned Val-Pak of Anne Arundel County for 12 years. Ms. Miller then worked as a real estate agent in the Annapolis area. She enjoyed going to Dover Downs, crocheting, playing Bunco with her friends, and being an active member in her community's social activities. She is survived by her daughter Amanda of Annapolis; brother Alan Hartenstein of Yardley, Pennsylvania; parents Gladyce and Sol Hartenstein of Queens, NY; former spouse Wally Miller of Arnold and many good friends in the Davidsonville and Annapolis areas. CDR Robert Edward Brown USN (Ret.), 65, died on November 27, 2009, at his home in Annandale, VA, finally succumbing to a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his wife of over 40 years, Sandra, their three children, Inger, Eric, and Adam, and his grandson Finn. 


Born on December 13, 1943, in Brooklyn, NY, to Ralph and Claire Brown, Robert spent his early years in Brooklyn as well as Staten Island--with a stop in San Francisco while his father served in the Navy during World War II--before his family settled in Grand Island, NY, a suburb of Buffalo. Following high school and a brief stint at the University of Minnesota, he was appointed to the United States Naval Academy and was graduated with the Class of 1968. He married Sandra Von Rembow on June 8, 1969, and they embarked on a long adventure together as a Navy family. He began his naval career at flight school and shortly after transitioned to the surface warfare community. He served in USS Energy (MSO-436), USS Corry (DD-817), USS Manitowoc (LST-1180), USS Belleau Wood (LHA-3), and finished the sea-going portion of his career as Executive Officer of USS Forrest Sherman (DD-931). He served in-country in the Republic of Vietnam as a senior advisor and commanding officer of River Assault Group 23 from January 1971 to January 1972, earning, among other awards, the Bronze Star with Combat 'V', Air Medal, Combat Action Ribbon and Vietnam Service Medal w/ four campaign stars. Robert and his family moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 1982 where, following graduation from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, he served a two year tour at the Joint Chiefs of Staff National Military Command Center and then in various program offices at Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). Following retirement from the Navy in October 1988, Robert began a distinguished civilian career supporting various program offices at NAVSEA working with a variety of ship classes, notably the AOE-1 and AOE-6 Fast Combat Supply Ships as well as LPD-4 and LSD-41/49 dock landing ships. Living in the Washington suburbs brought Robert's family closer to his in-laws, Fred and Ruth Von Rembow, and allowed for many special memories of Sunday dinners, birthdays, and holidays spent together. He treasured them as much they did him. Robert was a voracious reader of history and had a near encyclopedic knowledge of the Civil War, gladly sharing that knowledge with friends and family while touring the area's numerous battlefields. He especially enjoyed the Civil War club at Hope Lutheran Church. An avid baseball fan, he was a devoted follower of the San Francisco Giants and watched them play almost every night during the summer. He coached both Little League baseball and church league softball. Robert took up fishing as a way to spend time with his children as they grew older and enjoyed passing on that interest to his grandchildren, whom he adored. His passion, however, was philatelics, a hobby he learned from and shared with his father. He collected stamps and covers and frequently displayed his collection at local stamp shows. A member of the Springfield Stamp Club, he enjoyed corresponding with other collectors from all over the world. He loved all God's creatures and faithfully fed the menagerie of birds native to this area. Frequently at his side were his beloved and loyal Scottish Terriers. Fleet Admiral MacDuff, Heather, Bonnie, Daisy, Megan, Molly, and Maggie all shared his home at various points in the last 40 years. Robert loved his country and strongly believed in its inherent goodness. He deeply admired the Founding Fathers and often looked to their writings for guidance in reassuring his devotion to the country's core values and principles. He held in the highest esteem the men and women who have defended this country in peace and war, in conflicts past and present, and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Above all he was a devoted servant of God. A member of Hope Lutheran Church and later Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Robert trusted in God's will and was reassured that He would provide eternal life. Robert was a loving and devoted husband, a caring and vigilant father, a doting grandfather, a loyal friend, and a valued mentor to many. He is survived by his wife Sandra, daughter Inger Maslin (James), sons Eric and Adam, grandchildren Finn and Astrid Maslin, sister-in-law Deborah Elmer (Richard), sisters Joyce Yensan (Gregg), Donna James (George), and Valerie Lundy (Henry), and numerous nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held Friday, December 4, 2009 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Fairfax, VA. SirRonne Ali Kazee, (formally known as Ronald McClarin Smith), went home to be with the Lord on November 23, 2009. He was born on July 8, 1947 in Washington D.C. to the late Edward Lorenzo Smith and the late Lola Clementine Tolson-Smith. He was one of fourteen children born of this union. SirRonne was educated in the District of Columbia Public School System. Before completing his high school education, he enrolled in the Job Corps in Breckinridge Kentucky, majoring in electronics. He continued his education at George Mason University in Fairfax Virginia and the Prince George's Community College in Largo Maryland. On December 31, 1982, SirRonne married Paulette Yates. Of that union, a daughter was born, Rheena Kazee. SirRonne also had three other children. Prior to his current wife Paulette, he was married to the late Anetha Perry Smith. From that union, his eldest child, Vondell Smith was born. Kamala Smith and Just Kazee were born from prior relationships. One of SirRonne's favorite games a youth was Cowboys and Indians. He was always the Indian because of his complexion and became known as â€œDirty Redsâ€ which was later shortened to â€œReds.â€ In his youth, SirRonne was beginning to form the opinions and philosophies of a man. He was both caring and compassionate towards others. He would give a meal to a complete stranger, or give a helping hand to a family members or friends. SirRonne had strong convictions about the Vietnam War, so much so that he took a leave of absence from his job with the Metropolitan Police Department and left his young wife and son to join the U.S. Army. He volunteered to go to Vietnam. SirRonne's working career spanned more than forty years, starting with his first job at the Potomac Electric Power Company, (PEPCO). He left PEPCO and joined the Metropolitan Police Department's family. He enjoyed law enforcement so much that he moved on to the Prince George's County Police Department. In that department, SirRonne rose from the bottom to become a Sergeant, later advancing to the rank of Lieutenant. After his P.G. Police retirement in 1995, SirRonne moved on to the Prince George's County School Board in the Security Department where he retired in August of 2009. As an adult, SirRonne was extremely concerned that he had to develop a personal relationship with God. His spiritual conviction led him to change his name from Ronald M. Smith to SirRonne Ali Kazee. As he put it, â€œThe old was buried and the new was born.â€ To him, there was so much meaning in the name change. He stated: â€œIt all came to me in a dream.â€ SirRonne was really a fun-loving guy at heart. He loved to dance to the â€œOldiesâ€ music and read. Moreover, one could list numerous accolades, honors and tokens of appreciation that SirRonne received throughout his lifetime. None was more important to him than his acceptance by his peers and the many students he came to adore. To those students at Crossland Senior High School and Flowers Senior High School who knew and loved him, Mr. Kazee was extremely charitable. SirRonne believed that he possessed a ton of wisdom. To him, â€œKnowledge was power.â€ He let it be known that he wanted to live long enough to pass on all of his knowledge to his grandchildren, but he would share knowledge with any child that would listen. SirRonne was a loving father and husband. He really appreciated any and all opportunities to be involved in family activities with his wife, siblings, children and grandchildren. Although he was a strict disciplinarian, SirRonne truly loved all of his children equally. SirRonne had many future aspirations for his family, but God's plan was much larger. SirRonne leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife, Paulette; two sons, Vondell Smith and Just Kazee; two daughters, Kamala Smith and Rheena Kazee; seven grandchildren, Jasmine, Khalia, Kanaja, Kieren, Kai, Riyonna and SirRonne; one brother, Francis Smith and two sisters, Orsery Cordice and Marion Vanzego; mother-in-law Mary Yates; a special uncle, Thomas â€œCookieâ€ Jackson; and a host of nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends.

James â€œJimâ€ Ray Underwood, 72, a 30-year resident of Edgewater, MD died on November 23, 2009 at his home of natural causes. 


Born February 7, 1937 in Charleston, WV, he served in the United States Navy on an aircraft for 4-years after graduating high school. He was employed as a telephone service technician for AT&T for many years. Mr. Underwood enjoyed hunting. 


He was the beloved husband of Shirley L. Underwood; father of James Ray Underwood, Jr. of Seattle, WA, Kerry Hoard of England and France and Deborah Jordan of Harwood, MD; brother of Jack Underwood of Silver Spring, MD and Virginia Kobbs of Charleston, WV. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter.

Robert â€œBobbyâ€ Bruce Ratliff, 50, a 10-year resident of Edgewater, MD and previously of Dunkirk, MD died at the Mandrin Chesapeake Hospice House in Harwood, MD on November 23, 2009 of Hurthle Cell Thyroid Cancer after a 5-year illness. 


Born May 15, 1959 in Washington, D.C., he attended Frederick Sasscer Junior High School in Upper Marlboro, MD and was a 1977 graduate of Largo Senior High School. He worked for Safeway for 27-years as a retail clerk, as well as for Lowery's Trucking and as a cable slicer for Verizon. Mr. Ratliff was a loving husband and father who fought courageously to be with his family for the last 50-years of his illness. He was an active member of Divine Peace Lutheran Church in Largo, MD for 40-years. Robert was an avid outdoorsman who loved golfing, fishing and hunting. He was a certified hunter safety instructor for the 12th precinct pistol club in Harwood, MD. 


He is survived by his wife, Karyn Ann Ratliff, whom he married on March 31, 2001; 3 children, Seth Allen Ratliff of Edgewater, MD, Leigha Neubert of Norfolk, VA and Jesse Ratliff of Pasadena, MD; 2 brothers, Larry Ratliff of Fredericksburg, VA and Jimmy Ratliff of Brandywine, MD. He is also survived by his parents, Thomas and Vivian Jean Ratliff of Indian Head, MD.

Anthony Arrobas Da Silva Anthony A. â€œTonyâ€ Da Silva, 87, a 19-year resident of Annapolis and previously of Wheaton, Md., died on Saturday, November 21, 2009, at Mandrin Chesapeake Hospice House. Born on March 6, 1922, in New Bedford, Mass., to the late Antone and Emelia Sylvia, he enlisted in 1942 in the US Navy and served in the Pacific Theatre in World War II. Following eight years of active duty, he began a career as an employee of the federal government. During this time he joined the Navy Reserves, in which he served until 1982. A music lover and jazz aficionado, he formed the Buddy Gale Orchestra and served as bandleader and saxophonist for 24 years. He was also a member of the Fleet Reserve Club in Annapolis and a parishioner of St. Mary's Parish. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Yvette F. Da Silva of Annapolis; his sons, Dennis A.A. Da Silva of Frederick, Md., and Stephen W. Sylvia and wife Nancy of Orange, Va.; his daughters, Lisa F. Da Silva of Springfield, Va., and Diane Yvette Da Silva of Annapolis, Md.; his granddaughter, Georgia R. Katherine Rebecca Buck â€œKitsieâ€, a lifelong resident of Upper Marlboro, MD, died on November 19, 2009 at her residence. Kitsie was 97. 


Born June 26, 1912 in Upper Marlboro, MD to the late Arcenious and Louise Bean, Kitsie was a devoted homemaker and a co-founder of Buck Distributing , which was founded in 1946. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Upper Marlboro, and a scout leader for both the Girl & Boy Scouts for many years. Kitsie loved to play cards, especially Canasta, gardening and puzzles. 


Kitsie was preceded in death by her husband, Irwin Buck, who died in 1986 and whom she married in 1936. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth â€œBettyâ€ Buck of Edgewater, MD, her son, Howard Buck of Upper Marlboro, her brothers, Tom and Mike Bean, both of Upper Marlboro, MD and her sister, Jane Wells of Annapolis, MD. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Daniel and Timothy Buck, Erin Palmer and Kelly Ingbretson, and her great-grandchildren, Jackson and Logan Ingbretson. 


Friends may call on Friday November 27, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD. Lt. Col. Jack Leland Folkins, USAF(Ret.) 


Jack Leland Folkins, a resident of Annapolis, MD and previously of Seabrook, MD, died on Thursday November 19 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He was 83. 


Born January 3, 1926 to the late Ralph and Helen Folkins, he joined the Army Air Corps Cadet program after graduating high school for nine months before World War II ended. Jack was a graduate of Boston University with a B.S. in Business and received a Masters Degree in Public Administration from George Washington University. 


After his graduation from Boston University, he joined the United States Air Force as an officer and completed flight training. He served during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. Later in his career he served as an exchange officer in flight instruction with the Royal Australian Air Force and flew as a member of the Royal Australian Air Force Acrobatic team the â€œRed Salesâ€. He lived for 2 Â½ years with his family at East Sale, Victoria, Australia. 


Following his retirement from the Air Force, he worked as an administrator in various areas of the Prince George's County Government. 


Jack was a â€œBarbershopperâ€ with memberships in SPEBSQA, the â€œMarylandairesâ€ Chorus and quartets. He was a member of the Chrysler Arbitration Board and served on Congressman Steny Hoyer's Naval Academy Selection Team. Jack also volunteered with the USO Literacy Council of America and Hospice of Prince George's County. He also enjoyed bird carving and was an avid Redskins fan, attending every home game for 35 years. 


He is survived by his wife Margaret Folkins of Annapolis, his children, Scott Folkins of Prince Fredrick, MD, Bruce Folkins of Columbia, MD and Karen Smith of Dunkirk, MD; his sister Martha Hawes of Ponte Vedra, Florida. Also survived by his grandchildren; Maura and Kurt Folkins and Caitlin and Kirsten Smith. 


Friends are invited to celebrate Jack's life on Saturday, November 28, 2009 from 2-4pm at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD. A memorial mass will be held on December 12, 2009 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Concord, Massachusetts with inurnment atÂ Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.

George William Weidman, 82, a 3-month resident of Deale, MD and previously a 47-year resident of Davidsonville, MD died of natural causes on November 19 at the Anne Arundel Medical Center following a short illness. Born August 20, 1927 in Pennsylvania, he served in the U. S. Navy. From 1967 until his retirement in 2007, he was the owner of Weidman and Son Contracting Co. 


Mr. Weidman enjoyed boating and was a member of the Chesapeake Yacht Club in Shady Side. He was also a member of B.P.O.E. 622 in Annapolis and American Legion Post 0007 in Annapolis; he was a former member of the Fleet Reserve Club. Most of all, Mr. Weidman enjoyed spending time with his family. 


He is survived by his wife, Doris Weidman, whom he married on July 20, 1950; one son, Mark Weidman and his wife, Ginny, of Deale, MD; a brother, Robert Weidman of Florida; a sister, Althea Robinson of Reisterstown, MD; and three grandchildren, Michael Weidman, Matthew Weidman and Stephen Beitzel. He was also the brother of the late James Weidman and Mary Walrath. 


Friends are invited to a memorial service on Sunday, November 22 at 2 P.M. at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD. Interment private. Passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 following a brief illness. The beloved wife of Joseph Duren, Jr.; mother of Yvonne Davis and Andrea Duren.
