Joseph Donald "Don" Collins, 72, a resident of Edgewater for eight years and previously of University Park, died of heart failure Nov. 15 at his home after an 11-year illness. 


Mr. Collins was born May 22, 1935, in Washington, D.C. He was an airman second class in the Air Force from 1954 to 1960 and was stationed in Japan where he learned to read, speak and write Japanese. 


He was the owner of an appliance repair company called Collins and Son Appliance Service. 


He enjoyed working on cars, tinkering and fixing things. 


He was divorced from Helen Burkett of Florida. In 1986 he married Suzanne Giles. 


Also surviving are four sons, Mark Collins of Burlington, Wash., Eric Yahraus of Los Angeles, Calif., James Giles of Laurel and Maclean Forquer of Baltimore; two daughters, Donna Patrick of Severna Park and Kaaren Simmons of Edgewater; one sister, Margie Collins of College Park; and 13 grandchildren. 


Services and burial are private. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home in Edgewater. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Carolyn Margaret "Tiny" McVicker, 60, a resident of Edgewater for 12 years, died of complications following a lung transplant Nov. 13 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore after a four-year illness. 

Born April 27, 1947, in Staunton, Va., the daughter of Rita Hershfeld of Baltimore and the late James Curry, Mrs. McVicker graduated from high school and worked as billing clerk for Maryland Primary Care Physicians in Millersville. 

Her interests included sewing and her children. 

In addition to her mother, surviving are her husband, Keith "Bud" McVicker, whom she married in 1993. Surviving are four sons, Tim Longmire of Arnold, and Steven Longmire and Justin and Danny McVicker, all of Edgewater; one daughter, Jodi Longmire of Arnold; one brother, James Curry Jr. of Ocean Pines, Md.; five sisters, Christina Shepard of Zellwood, Fla., Mary Warren of Tampa, Fla., and Rita Curry, Marge Rippin and Kathy Frome, all of Baltimore; and one grandson Charles Patrick Longmire.

Muriel E. Monaghan, 83, an eight-year resident of Annapolis and formerly of New York, died of natural causes Nov. 12 at the Annapolitan Assisted Living in Annapolis after a three-month illness.

Born March 14, 1926, in Belfast, Ireland, the daughter of the late Robert John Monaghan and Mary Alice Donnelly, Ms. Monaghan was a high school graduate.

She worked as a club hostess in New York for more than 40 years.

Her interests included animals, especially dogs. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Annapolis.

Rena J. Collins, 87, of Annapolis and previously of Laurel, died Nov. 11 at Anne Arundel Medical Center of complications from Alzheimer's disease.

Born May 6, 1920, in Blackburn, England, Mrs. Collins was raised in New Bedford, Mass. She was a bank manager for 25 years with Suburban Trust Bank.

Mrs. Collins was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post 60 in Laurel and enjoyed dancing, travel and spending time with family and friends.

On Aug. 14, 1943, she married Hubert Burton Greye, who died Aug. 28, 1977. On Sept. 7, 1981, she married George A. Collins, who died on June 6, 2003.

Surviving is a stepson, Ty B. Collins of Riva.

A life celebration will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, followed by the memorial service. Burial will be private.

Walter Scott Almeda, 82, of Annapolis, died of respiratory failure Nov. 10 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie. 


Mr. Almeda was born Nov. 13, 1924, in Boston, Mass., to the late Walter B. and Ruth Scott Almeda. He earned an economics degree from Harvard University and served in the Navy during World War II aboard the USS Winslow. 


During his 35-year career with Sears, he was manager of the Montgomery Mall store in Bethesda. He served on the board of trustees of Suburban Hospital in Bethesda. In his retirement he stayed active as a job-training consultant for Job Training Program Assistance. 


He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Judith Tite Almeda; two daughters, Lisa Sumner of Hilton Head, S.C., and Laurie Gamliel of Potomac; one brother, Alden Almeda of Colorado; one sister, Marilyn Hansen of Plymouth, Mass.; and 10 grandchildren. 


Services are private. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home in Edgewater.

Catherine Franklin "Cathy" Woytovich, 74, a 53-year resident of Edgewater, died of natural causes Nov. 9 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. 


Mrs. Woytovich was born Aug. 12, 1933, in Chickamauga, Ga. Before her marriage on Oct. 16, 1954, to William Woytovich, she worked for the Teachers Bureau of Mathematics in Washington, D.C. She also was employed part-time at the YMCA Camp Letts and Central Middle School. 


She volunteered for many years as a Girl Scout leader and for the American Red Cross chapter house in Edgewater. 


In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Lorrie Morgan of Edgewater and Karina Haley of Crofton; one brother, James Franklin of Temple City, Calif.; and two granddaughters. 


Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. A memorial Mass will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 515 Loch Haven Road, Edgewater. Burial will be private.

Beatrice Elaine Remsen Malory, 89, of Silver Spring, died Nov. 7 from heart complications at Mandrin Chesapeake Hospice House in Harwood.

Mrs. Malorey was born on Nov. 22, 1917, in Washington, D.C., to the late John and Lucinda Kern. She was a homemaker, who, at one time, worked as a receptionist in a beauty salon.

She was a former member of the Silver Spring Junior Women's Club and enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family and friends.

She was the widow of George Malorey and Peter Remsen Jr.

She is survived by two sons, Peter Remsen of Edgewater and Donald Remsen of Silver Spring; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 1 at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater.

Robert William Hoffman, 70, of Edgewater, MD and Henderson Harbor, NY, died November 5, 2007, of lung disease. Born April 20, 1937, in Rochester, NY, Mr. Hoffman was the son of Constance Turner and Robert Bertram Hoffman who predeceased him. 


As a young man, Mr. Hoffman moved to Brazil, with his family and attended the American School in Rio de Janeiro. He graduated from the Stony Brook School on Long Island, NY. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Rochester, where he was a member of Theta Delta Chi fraternity. He pursued post graduate studies in California. 


For a period of time, he served in the Army where he was a member of the Signal Corps. 


In the 1960s after serving in the Army, he resided in Pittsford, NY where he started and ran the Pittsford Picture Framing Company with partner Joe Willard; and, established one of the first copy centers in the United States, coining the phrase, â€œCopy While You Waitâ€. 


In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Mr. Hoffman cruised extensively in his own sailboat. He also enjoyed a career as first crew, then captain of several private sailing yachts, traveling throughout the Caribbean and across the Atlantic. 


Mr. Hoffman settled in Annapolis where he became a partner in Dockside Yacht Sales, located in the building now housing Storm Brothers Ice Cream. In 1973, with partner Clarence Blackwell, he purchased part of the historic Trumpy Yacht Yard in Eastport. Jointly, they developed the property into Yacht Haven of Annapolis. At the time of his death, Mr. Hoffman was actively engaged with the daily running of Yacht Haven, and was considered an icon in the marine business world. 


In addition to Yacht Haven, Mr. Hoffman's other business interests included: partner in Shades Unlimited of Annapolis, Virginia Beach, VA and Dewey Beach, DE; Sweet Mama's Chicken in Dewey Beach, DE; Gratitude Marina in Rock Hall, MD; Sharp's Island, Inc. which designed, built, and sold Sharps Island 32 motor yachts; President Yachts, LLC, importing President motor yachts; and Shady Side LLC, of Shade Side, MD. 


He was well known as a partner in the syndicate which bought, refurbished, owned, and operated the 12 meter racing yacht American Eagle, US 12-21. 


A member of Annapolis Yacht Club and Henderson Harbor Yacht Club, NY, Mr. Hoffman also was a former board member of the SPCA, and Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts. He was a member of the Marine Trades Association, and Eastport Business Association. Additionally, he volunteered as a tutor with the literacy program at Green Street Elementary School in Annapolis. 


Mr. Hoffman was an avid sailor, voracious reader, enjoyed shooting sports, gardening, travel, and working at his farm. He had a great fondness for pets, especially his dogs being known for his dogs of great personality. He was an art lover and supporter of the arts. His greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren. 


Surviving are his wife, Mary Marburger Hoffman; two sons, Robert Grey Hoffman and Daniel Burton Hoffman both of the home; two daughters from his first marriage, Heather Ronaldshay of North Yorkshire, England, and Jessica Zambeletti of London, England; six grandchildren; a brother, Philip Hoffman of Tequesta, FL and Henderson Harbor, NY; two sisters, Constance MacDougall and Martha Bouculat, both of Annapolis. 


A funeral service will be held Friday, November 9, 10:00 a.m., at Holy Family Catholic Church, Davidsonville, MD. Interment will be private.
