Joyce Dick, 79, a resident of Annapolis for 13 years and previously of Gulfport, Miss., died Oct. 23 at Anne Arundel Medical Center of complications due to a stroke. 

Born in Roosevelt, N.Y., on Nov. 22, 1927, Mrs. Dick received a bachelor of science degree in engineering from Alfred University in New York. She worked as an engineer after graduation and then was a homemaker most of her life. 

A member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, she was instrumental in the 24-hour adoration at the church where she was a member of the Legion of Mary. She also was a Eucharistic minister who visited the sick in nursing homes and hospitals. Sewing, baking, gardening and her grandchildren were among her interests. 

Surviving are her husband, Edward F. Dick, whom she married Feb. 9, 1952; four sons, Edward F. Dick Jr. of Shady Side, Joseph Dick of Wheaton, Ill., William Dick of Lakewood, Ohio, and Robert Dick of Annapolis; two daughters, Tina Nunn of North Reading, Mass., and Gina Haske of Annapolis; two brothers, Bud Killian of Mount Jackson, Va., and Bob Killian of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; and 19 grandchildren. She was the mother of the late James Dick. 

Joyce's Life Celebration will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, October 26 at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, October 27 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 N. Bestgate Road. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, October 29 in Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Crownsville.

After a lengthy illness, Alexander "Al" McKay, 72, of Annapolis and previously of Oxon Hill, died of leukemia and emphysema Oct. 19 at the home of his sister, Charmaine E. Reesch, where he lived for the past 16 years. 


Born Feb. 10, 1935, in New York City, Mr. McKay moved to the Washington, D.C., area while a child. In 1994 he moved to Annapolis. 


He was a painting contractor, known for his quality home painting style. He enjoyed his guitar, television shows and driving his truck. He had a great devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God and the Holy Rosary, his family said. 


His longtime friend, Vivian Dewar, died in 2005. He was the son of the late Bernice and Alexander McKay Sr. 


In addition to his sister, he is survived by another sister, Rose Marie McCeney of Fredericksburg, Va.; 12 nieces and nephews; and 17 grand-nieces and grand-nephews. 


A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 N. Bestgate Road. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401. The family kindly requests that no flowers be sent.

John R. "Bill" Pascale, 69, a 27-year resident of Davidsonville, died Oct. 14 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a two-year illness with cancer. 

Mr. Pascale was born in Washington, D.C., on July 24, 1938. He graduated from Anacostia High School and served in the Air Force. He was a retired naval engineer for the Department of Defense. 

He was a member of Riva Trace Baptist Church. His interests included baseball, especially the Orioles, yard work and working on cars. 

He is survived by his wife, Wilma C. Pascale, whom he married on June 8, 1968; two daughters, Robin L. Nhare of Harwood and Jackie M. McCullough of Annapolis; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Charles and Marie Pascale. 

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, where the funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, 4111 Pennsylvania Ave., Suitland, Md.

William Austin "Bill" Whesdos, 54, a resident of Annapolis for 18 years, died of melanoma Oct. 12 at Heritage Harbour Health and Rehabilitation Center after an 18-month illness. 


Mr. Whesdos was born March 14, 1953, in Virginia Beach, Va., where he resided prior to moving to Annapolis. He graduated from First Colonial High School in 1971 and Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., in 1975, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering and was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and an avid Hokies fan. 


He worked for ARINC in Annapolis as a communications engineer for 18 years. 


His interests included sailing, collecting fine wines, running, travel and research. 


Surviving are his sister, Joanne Griggs of Virginia Beach; and a nephew. He was the son of the late Paul L. and Gloria E. Whesdos and brother of the late Paul Terry Whesdos. 


Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday October 17 at 11:00am at Princess Anne Memorial Park, 1110 N. Great Neck Road in Virginia Beach.

Richard Carroll Turner "Pop" On Friday, October 12, 2007. He was a supervisor with REA Express, a lifelong resident of Southeast Washington, D.C. and considered himself extremely fortunate to be a survivor of the D-Day invasion. He was in the 1st wave of the 4th infantry division to land on the beaches of Normandy. The beloved husband of the late Beatrice L. Turner; father of Robert C. (Darla), Michael E. (Linda) and Billy Turner; grandfather of Candy, Karen, Brian and Peter Turner and Cathy Derrington; great grandfather of Kevin, Noah, Shelby, Makayla and Jake; uncle of Albert (Mary) Turner. Alvin E. Felmey, 87, of Edgewater, died Oct. 11 at the South River Health and Rehabilitation Center in Edgewater. Mr. Felmey, known as â€œGene,â€ was born June 16, 1920, in Winfield, Pa. He worked with General Motors Co. in Baltimore for 35 years and previously lived in Glen Burnie before moving to Edgewater. He served in the Navy during WW II. He enjoyed hiking and being outdoors. Survivors include one son, Mark E. Felmey of Ellicott City; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was married in 1953 to Mary J. Felmey who died in 2000. He had eight brothers and eight sisters with three surviving. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. tomorrow at New Cathedral Cemetery, 4300 Old Frederick Road, Baltimore. Alan "Al" Royer Gnau, 62, of Mayo, died of a sudden heart attack Oct. 11 at the Anne Arundel Medical Center. 


The son of Evelyn Royer Gnau of Mayo and the late Harry George Gnau, who died in 1987, Mr. Gnau was born May 24, 1945, in Baltimore County and attended Baltimore City College. 


He owned Gnau Construction Co. of Edgewater for more than 40 years, and specialized in the construction and installation of complex high-volume wastewater treatment facilities. Before that he had apprenticed with the Cherry Hill Construction Co. 


His interests included deep-sea fishing, boating and socializing. 


Surviving is his longtime companion, Constance Schrom. 


Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. tomorrow and 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, where a funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Burial is private.

James Blake "J.B." Johnston, 97, a resident of Deale for 30 years, died of natural causes Oct. 9 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.



Born Feb. 25, 1910, in Connellsville, Pa., Mr. Johnston graduated from Cheyney State Teachers College in 1933. He was an industrial arts teacher for many years at McKinley Technical High School in Washington, D.C. 

His interests included travel, woodcarving and photography. 

Surviving are one son, James B. "Peter" Johnston of Baltimore; two daughters, Isabel Stewart of Chicago and Sharyn Martin of Deale; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. 

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 3, 2007 at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. Burial is private.

The Rev. Eileen C. House, 51, of Lothian, died of Wegener's disease Oct. 9 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore after a three-month illness. 


The Rev. House was born Nov. 22, 1955, in Baltimore, where she was reared and graduated from Loyola College in 1978. She earned a master's degree in divinity from the Yale Divinity School in New Haven, Conn. 


After college, she worked as a respiratory therapist at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. She served as associate rector at St. James' Episcopal Parish in Lothian following her ordination in 1990. 


She enjoyed dogs and training them, and was involved with a Labrador retriever rescue organization. She was also well read and a fine writer, according to those close to her. 


Surviving are two distant cousins. 


A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. James' Parish in Lothian. Burial is private.
