Lynne Sinclair (Canwell) Schulz (1942-2020)

Lynne Schulz – beloved wife of the late William Schulz and mother of four adoring boys – died peacefully at her home in Washington, DC, on December 31, 2020, at the age of 78. Her death came exactly 24 years after her own mother passed away on New Year’s Eve in 1996.

Though she lived six decades in the nation’s capital, Lynne hailed originally from the other Washington. A proud daughter of Spokane, she grew up the oldest of six children born to Albert and Marsinah Canwell. Lynne and her siblings were directly descended on Albert’s side from Samuel Fuller, one of the leaders of the Mayflower voyage in 1620. The family lived at the historic Montvale Farm house alongside the Little Spokane River.

In 1959, Lynne was a member of the first 12 th -grade graduating class at Spokane’s St. George’s School, helping start the tradition of seniors walking across the Graduation Bridge that continues today. Lynne was especially proud of being the school’s very first graduate, a position she earned by virtue of the fact that no other student came before “Canwell” alphabetically in the small inaugural class of ’59. After a year at San Diego College for Women (now the University of San Diego) studying fashion and design, Lynne switched gears, moving east to pursue interests in politics and journalism. She worked for the weekly conservative political newspaper Human Events as well as on the staff of Kansas Senator James Pearson.

It was in Washington where she met and fell in love with Bill Schulz, an aspiring journalist from New York who would later serve as Executive Editor and Vice President of Reader’s Digest. The pair married at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church on Capitol Hill in 1965. Over the next ten years they welcomed four sons, raising them on Capitol Hill and, later, in the same home on Hawthorne Place in the Palisades neighborhood of Washington where Bill and Lynne lived the rest of their lives.

Despite being outnumbered as the only female in the bunch, Lynne ruled the roost at Hawthorne. She was a homemaker nonpareil, a charming hostess, a dazzling cook, and a biting wit. Her hospitality at Hawthorne was most pronounced in the Sunday night family dinners she and Bill long hosted, affairs that grew bigger and more boisterous throughout the years as girlfriends, wives, and grandchildren added to the mix. Their proudest accomplishment was raising their sons well, both by the instruction they imparted and the example they set. Lynne routinely reminded them to cherish and appreciate the years raising their own children – no matter how hectic or frustrating or exhausting they might seem at the time. She recalled her own experience overseeing a seemingly endless parade of carpools, sports practices, school plays, birthday parties, etc., as the happiest and most fulfilling period of her life.

Lynne was preceded in death by her parents and husband, but is survived by sons Bill (Kate), Max (Sandy), Nick (Elise), and Ken (Becky), and 18 grandchildren. She is also survived by siblings Marshall, Christina, Jon, Stephanie, and Geneve, and their families, as well as numerous other close friends and relatives.

Following a funeral Mass at St. Ann’s Catholic Church on Tenley Circle on January 12 – her late husband’s birthday – Lynne will be interred with Bill at Holy Rood Cemetery in Georgetown.

After 82 years of devotion to his family and countless friends, Albert "Al" Procopio, Sr., of Edgewater, Maryland, passed away on December 29, 2020, in Annapolis, Maryland, from complications of COVID-19. He will be remembered for his eternal love for Rose, his devoted wife of over 60 years, six children, seventeen grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Everyone admired Al's wit, selfless generosity, and the love and importance Al always held in his heart, and by his acts, to protect and provide for his family.

In 1920, Al's parents, Giuseppe Francesco Procopio and Maria Rosaria Romano, immigrated from Italy to Ellis Island. The family located in Niagara Falls, New York, where Al's father pursued his trade as a stone mason, working endless hours to create a new life for his family in America. Later the Procopio's relocated to Philadelphia, where Al was born on February 2, 1938, the youngest of eight children. In pursuit of the American Dream, Al's family eventually made their final home in the Washington, DC area.

Already armed with what would become his phenomenal sense of "street smarts," Al left school in the 10th grade to begin work to help his family. He went to work with his older brother (and best friend) Hugo as a bricklayer at the young age of 15.

In April 1960, Al met the love of his life, Rose Marian DiMarco. His "love at first sight" for Rose was so heartfelt, and he knew the moment he saw her, he had found his bride-to-be. Certain of his love, Al proposed to Rose the very night they met. Two weeks later, Rose accepted Al's proposal. With his perseverance, four months later, on August 20, 1960, they married in her hometown on Long Island, New York.

Al pursued multiple entrepreneurial endeavors throughout his lifetime. His talent and understanding of the construction industry led him to become a home builder. In 1960, Al, his brother, Hugo, and brother-in-law, Sonny, began operating under Procopio and DeCesaris Construction Company, Inc. In 1963, Al's passion for fast cars led him into the drag racing business. The trio built and operated Cecil County Drag-O-Way and operated Capitol Raceway. In the 1970's, they built what would become the hottest nightclub in the Washington, DC area, the Classic III Supper Club in Camp Springs, Maryland, booking acts such as Ray Charles, Gloria Gaynor, the Four Tops, the Temptations, and many more.

In 1973, Al and Hugo, formed H & A Construction Company, Inc. and continued his lifelong homebuilding career. In 1988, with his youngest son Al, Jr., Pro Development Group and Procopio Family Homes were established. While Al successfully built residential and commercial properties, his greatest satisfaction came from identifying and negotiating land deals.

Al's family was clearly the most important part of his life. There was no task or challenge, big or small, that Al would not rise to if it were for his family. He relished Sunday dinners, traveling, cooking, and gardening. Al was a fantastic storyteller who loved to share his true tales, life experiences, knowledge, and family traditions with his children and grandchildren. He also was passionate about playing golf, the thrill of casinos, playing cards, dining out, watching old cowboy movies, sports, and monitoring the news (during which he would always provide colorful and insightful commentary).

Later in life, Al enjoyed the winter months at his Florida home with Rose, playing golf and spending time with his wife, family, and friends. One of Al's most memorable moments was playing golf at the prestigious Augusta National Golf Club. Another favorite trip was traveling to Italy and visiting the towns from which his parents and Rose's parents had immigrated. He also fulfilled a longtime dream by attending a Formula 1 auto race in Monza, Italy with his two sons.

Al is survived by his beloved wife, Rose; his children, Rose Procopio Barondess (Mark), Anne Procopio-Scott, Joseph A. Procopio, Sr. (Julie), Juliet Casey (Thomas), Lisa Procopio Bell, and Albert Procopio, Jr. (Tiffany); his grandchildren, George, Priscilla, Josh, Samantha, Albert, Alex, Brendan, Melissa, Rachael, Joseph Jr., Joseph III, Bella, Alexis, Zachary, Jake, Domenic, and Marcello; great-grandchildren, Ella, Layne, and Jonathan; and his sister, Carmela Arcuri.

Out of concern for the safety of all because of the COVID-19 pandemic, a private Mass of Christian Burial will be offered with immediate family only. The Mass will be live-streamed on Saturday, January 9, 2021 at 12:15 p.m. via the Holy Family Catholic Church website by clicking HERE

She was a woman regal, royal and rare, with non-negotiable dignity.” ~ Anonymous

Emma “Louise” Gregory, a longtime Anne Arundel County resident whose talent and passion for homemaking and hostessing turned gatherings large and small with family and friends into splendid and memorable affairs, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2020, from complications of Covid-19 at the age of 90.

Known by her middle name, Louise was born on February 23, 1930, in High Point, NC, to Isabell (nee Talley) and Charles A. McDonnell, who became successful business owners in their hometown of Cheraw, SC. Louise was the second of three children, and from a young age demonstrated the creativity, flair and style that would become her hallmark.

She was educated at Coulter Memorial Academy, established in 1881 by the Presbyterian Church USA as the first school in Chesterfield County to serve African American children, and went on to graduate from Harbison Junior College in Irmo, SC.

Louise, along with her older brother, Sonny, and younger sister, Henrietta, grew up helping in the family businesses, first in her father’s dry cleaning and tailoring business and then in her mother’s homestyle restaurant.

After Harbison, she moved to Washington, DC, to live with an aunt and study to be a dental hygienist, after which she worked for many years in the practice of prominent Washingtonian and African American dentist Dr. Alphonso Overstreet. For more than 20 years, she worked as a supervisor of proofreading in the Department of Legislative Services for the Maryland General Assembly, from which she retired.

It was in Washington that she met the love of her life and husband of 58 years, Harry Jackson Gregory. The doting couple married on June 27, 1957, delighting friends who often joked about Harry being a confirmed bachelor until he met Louise. They were blessed with a daughter, Tylade Elizabeth, and built a life that focused on family and country and coastal living. Together, they raised bulldogs, remodeled a beach house, and designed and built their dream home amid the sprawling horse farms of Anne Arundel County. Louise was a proud and active parent at equestrian competitions with her daughter, a champion dressage rider, and sponsored cadets at the U.S. Naval Academy for several years.

A fashion plate and clothes lover, Louise was an extraordinary seamstress and impeccable dresser who was ahead of her time, making most of her clothing until she began working for the Maryland General Assembly. Her wardrobe and accessories were always striking and defied convention, and she could construct head-turning garments the night before the next day’s outing -- be it to the office or a special ocassion.

She prized being polished, elegant and stylish in all that she did, including interior decorating, gardening, and luncheons or holiday dinners for family and friends. Louise was a consummate chef, baker and hostess, and her summer afternoon lawn parties at her Davidsonville home were not be to missed.

Louise is survived by her daughter, Tylade Kolasa, and son-in-law, Daniel Kolasa, three grandchildren, William, Sierra and Kendall; a sister, Henrietta Motley and her husband, Charles Motley, a sister-in-law and a host of loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband.

Due to COVID-19, no gathering will be held at this time. The family wishes for everyone to enjoy and share fond memories by signing the online guestbook or sending condolences to the family at the address below. She will be interred with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery later this year.

She worked at GW Hospital for many years. She resigned in the 1980’s to assist her mom in caring for Pauline, who had a paralyzing stroke. She was later stricken with a stroke. In spite of all this, her attitude never changed. She was always the social butterfly, never complaining, never negative. She always included and embraced everyone that she met. Even though she had a physical disability, her service to God never ended.
•	During the early days of tele-conferencing, she organized a mentor program for failing students, praying with them and insisting them in their homework preparation. She always held children and the under privileged close to her heart. She mentored a female student who was totally failing, but through Betty’s mentoring program she graduated with honors from her class.
•	She always planned dinners to give people a break most times paying for all that could not afford to pay.

She was a member of morning call ministries, from its inception until her death.
She enjoyed going to the Maryland Senior picnic day each year. She was a member of the Maryland Senior Club in Camp Springs, MD. She was involved with Independence Now, an organization that reached out to People with Disabilities in Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties. She joined many support groups at Southern Maryland Hospital in order to provide assistance for hurting people. This list could go on and on.
Betty loved life and she loved to laugh! No down time for her. She was kind, compassionate, patient, loved people and always wanted to make life brighter for all.
Memories will be cherished by her sister Pauline Renee Belton, two nephews, Josh and Eric Belton, two nieces, Gabrielle and Jayla Belton, special God sister, Helen Lewis, Sister in Law, Stephanie Belton. Her God children: Hoyt P. Glover, Veronica Glover. Many God sisters and God brothers; Inita Redd, Willie Robinson, Carmenta Hayes, Rhonda Richmond, James Bonnette, Linda Bonnette, Elizabeth Miller, Cynthia Baltimore; a host of cousins and family members: the Dales, the Belton’s, the Bradley’s, the Walton’s the Fennell’s and a host of church families and friends.

If Betty could speak today, she will compel us with one her famous sayings, “Reach out and touch-if nobody reaches, nobody gets touched. Touch someone with your life-be that living epistle.” Betty touched many people with her life.
Question: So what now?
Answer: We persevere, we endure, we fight, and hold out until the end because we expect the promise of 1 Corinthians 15: 51-58-
•	A mystery not all sleep, but all changed,
•	Corruption now, then incorruption,
•	Mortal now, then immortality,
•	Death swallowed up,
•	Therefore, be steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the Lord’s work, your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

A memorial gathering will be held on Thursday, January 14 from 11 a.m. until the start of the memorial service at 11:30 a.m. at the KALAS FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, 6160 Oxon Hill Rd., Oxon Hill, MD.
